  • A Declaration:
    Welcome to the Gameological Dig, a channel devoted to playing games with obtuse and interesting stories. The aim of this channel is to treat these game worlds like an archeological site, meant to be unearthed and studied, so that we may better understand their plots, characters and themes.
    Episode Notes:
    This is a re-uploaded version of the same video, which should be viewable in SHINY 1080p. Special thanks to "hakamhak" for explaining how to properly export out in 1080p in iMovie. You're a life saver!
    This was definitely the most challenging video I've attempted yet. Between the combined length of the main game and its DLC's, I devoted TOO MANY HOURS to this playthrough of Dishonored, and damn near ALL of my hard drive space. I made it work, but it pushed me to the limits creatively, since the subject of this video has roughly 10 minutes of screen time in total. It was really quite difficult to compile interesting but relevant scenes in a cohesive fashion. In the end, it came out well enough, but I feel it could be better. Still, it is an informative episode. I've been vying to talk about the lore to Dishonored for a hell of a long time. It's SO compelling and well thought out (though the Outsider's lore is super sparse), and is infinitely cooler than anything which happens in the main narrative.
    As of now, I have one, maybe two more episodes planned. Depending on this episode's reception, I may do more (some lore vids on Granny Rags, Daud and Dahlia, mayhaps). Anywho, I hope you enjoy episode one of my new series.
    Game Notes:
    Dishonored is a 2012 stealth action-adventure video game developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It was released worldwide in October 2012 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Set in the fictional, plague-ridden industrial city of Dunwall, Dishonored follows the story of Corvo Attano, bodyguard to the Empress of the Isles. He is framed for her murder and forced to become an assassin, seeking revenge on those who conspired against him. Corvo is aided in his quest by the Loyalists-a resistance group fighting to reclaim Dunwall, and the Outsider-a powerful being who imbues Corvo with magical abilities. Several noted actors including Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, Michael Madsen, Lena Headey and Chloë Grace Moretz provided voice work for the game.
    The game is played from a first-person perspective and allows the player to undertake a series of assassination missions in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on player choice. Missions can be completed through stealth, combat, or a combination of both. Exploring each level opens new paths and alternatives for accomplishing mission goals, and it is possible to complete all missions, eliminating all of Corvo's targets, in a non-lethal manner. The story and missions are changed in response to the player's violent actions or lack thereof. Magical abilities and equipment are designed to be combined to create new and varied effects.

    I got the impression that the outsider favoured low chaos aswell.

    • @GameologicalDig
      @GameologicalDig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +123

      He says he's "fascinated" when you employ low chaos tactics. That doesn't mean he favors it. I'm fascinated by reading philosophical texts, but it doesn't mean I prefer it to reading fiction, or non-fiction. I view this the same way. His tone and his words during the high chaos ending seem indicative of him really favoring high chaos. He says "I don't know about you, Corvo, but I've had a lovely time." I mean, it's subjective and open-ended enough that either reading could be argued for, but I feel this makes more sense to me.

    • @roach9397
      @roach9397 7 ปีที่แล้ว +78

      I don't think he favors either, he simply wishes to see what Corvo will do with the cards he is dealt. No matter what happens the Outsider is interested in how the story unfolds.

    • @GameologicalDig
      @GameologicalDig  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks, lol. I too wish I could get more content out a lil more hastily. It's not easy though. I'm still in the process of writing the next episode. Trust me, if I could get these out quicker, I would, but I have to remind many that I'm essentially writing a research essay on the game. It takes a lot of time to compile all the info, to filter out non relevant tidbits and organize it all into a cohesive idea, AND still make it good. Then there's the video editing part. It takes time. I suspect I'll be done with the script before the week is done, and that the next episode will be up sometime next week. Just hold a lil longer!

    Gameological Dig, Thank you sooo much for this, I just found your channel today! (subscribing, plus left like). I really love The Outsider and was completely fascinated with the way you explained him. I was wondering if you are going to continue explaining more about him and Dishonored in general from the Dishonored 2 game and the upcoming game: Dishonored - Death of the Outsider (when it comes out of course). - My heart is breaking after hearing about and watching that trailer. I really want to play it, but I don't want The Outsider gone - he's too amazing.
    I know we got more information on him in the second game, but the way you explain everything is beyond intriguing. It genuinely makes me want to play the first game all over again just to take in more from what you have said. (Also, I never watched/played the DLC content etc about Delilah... so got a bit of a shock about Granny Rags - It was an awesome mind blowing shock btw). :)
    I have the first game on Xbox, just getting into PC games now so planning on buying all the Dishonored games on Steam. I am really hoping you do say more on the Dishonored franchise.

    At the time of the Outsider saying that there were only 8 in world bearing his mark, we know of 6 living at that time:
    Corvo
    Daud
    Delilah
    Granny rags
    The Royal Torturer
    The Unnamed woman marked in 1803 (who is only 2 years older than Jessamine, so most likely still alive)
    15 years later then, there is anywhere from 5-9 people with this mark (as Emily gets the mark and Corvo/Daud together have the opportunity to kill Daud, Delilah, Granny rags, and the royal torturer).
    Time to dig through all the shreds of lore in both games once it comes out in 12 days.

    • @alicaido6616
      @alicaido6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erwin Thomas in a large reddit q and a thing that Harvey and the Dishonored team ran, it's confirmed both granny rags and the Royal torturer were killed by Corvo.

    • @alicaido6616
      @alicaido6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erwin Thomas Corvo survives obviously, Daud was spared though we don't know much more other than "Daud is alive, though at the time of Dishonored 2 he is not in the greatest of health" (that's my rough memory of what Harvey said). Delilah is trapped within the painting. I've no clue about the unnamed woman.

    • @alicaido6616
      @alicaido6616 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Corvo and Daud means there is two confirmed people with the mark, as Delilah is evidently alive in Dishonored 2 we can say there is three, with the addition of Emily bringing it to four. There is the possibility that we don't learn more about the unnamed woman, but I doubt that. So we can assume she is alive. Bringing it to five. Of course others could have been marked within that time.

    • @KRIMZONMEKANISM

      Gameological Dig Indeed. But none of Dark Souls games has had such amazing lore as bloodborne.
      I haven't played in months and i still amuse myself by trying to figure out certain things about that game.
      I'm telling you. If they make a sequel to Bloodborne, you should try to get in on that action, because the game's lore is so misterious that there are still people today working out the reasons why somethings are the way they are.
      Look into "Redgrave" and "Jerks Sans Frontiers" their videos are not as well made as yours, but their content is awesome and very detailed.
      They are also friends, and they share different oppinions.
      Also, if you don't know about Bloodborne, here's just a funny quirk about it's conception:
      The creator of Dark Souls read the entire horror book collection written by HP Lovecraft to draw inspiration.
      If it sounds good, wait until you play it ;)

      +KRIMZONMEKANISM Fuckin LOVE Bloodborne! I'm on my fourth playthrough now, building a bloodtinge/skill character. Got me the bowblade ASAP, and I'm using the Chikage, having the most fun with my current build.
      Abd yea, I would love to do lore on BB, but the Vaati'sVidya of the world have got that covered, though if they decide to do a sequel (which I honestly don't want, but would play nonetheless), I MOST DEF would be all over it!

    I think another potential (but very unlikely, or at least unintentional) parallel is to the Vodou lwa Baron Samdi. The “greater spirits” in Lwan tradition aren’t necessarily omnipotent in the way monotheistic or supreme gods are, but their power over their attributed domains is essentially absolute, a lot like the Outsider. They are also fickle and fallible, very human in certain ways, but still alien enough to not consider their inclinations and pursuits totally comprehensible by humans. They commonly act as analogues for the human experience with a given factor of life, but, again, are not human and so their relation to those things isn’t the same as to humans.
    I specifically bring up Samdi, though, because he is the presider of the underworld/afterlife in Vodou. He also claims the many routes and traditions surrounding a person reaching the afterlife including murder, criminality, debauchery, chaos, death rites/funerals, cemeteries, healing, and resurrection. While he’s not known to give out super-natural powers like the Outsider, he is often attributed to observe mortal misdeeds, partially for his own genuine entertainment (as he’s portrayed as irreverent and amused by baser vices like smoking and drinking) but also to know how to regard them when they pass from life to death.

    The Outsider was in the right place at the right time to be merged with the void. The void's influence on the cultist's was creating the fate that made them lead down that path.

    I would argue that the Outsider provides his mark to people for more than just entertainment. Oh sure, that's a big reason, perhaps he even believes that's the only reason, but I see a different motivation. I think the Outsider wants to be proven wrong, I think he wants to believe that absolute power doesn't corrupt absolutely. He may sound entertained when you take the high chaos route, but he sounds awed (and once, actively expresses it - try visiting his shrines *after* you use the nonlethal target removals some times, very insightful) when you come up with a low chaos solution. He feels wonder when he sees someone who has been laid so low by fate, given absolute power and then choosing to use it with a deft and subtle hand.
    High Chaos was what he was expecting - you're just a beaten animal, reacting to having the upper hand. Low Chaos is the stuff of storybook heroics.

    My take on the outsider is he is just a Eldritch god that gets bored sometimes so to entertain themselves he gives powers to humans that play into some kind of worldly drama just to see what will happen

    in terms of the lonely rat boy, I can imagine him playing a large part in spreading the rat plague (though another character played a larger part). I'm also wondering how many rat swarms he set off it seems to imply one or two but since it's not stated this may be quite a few.

    Brilliant series! I found this channel via the SOMA videos. I do agree with some of the points where hearing "quote" and "und quote" repeatedly is a lil too much.
    A possible solution to this problem would be to show the quoted text with the author at the bottom. That way, we'll know when the quote starts and when it ends without hearing "quote" and "und quote".
    You can get creative with this, you don't have to show the whole text in one go, you can cut it up into small bits, show it like a typewriter, there's lots of options.
    Just an idea from a guy who loves interface design...

    14:30 so to me this proves that the outsider dosnt only favour high chaos, Daud loses the interest of the outsider when he settled into the life of been a heartless killer, it’s only when Daud starts to feel guilty over his actions when Daud has a choice to make that the outsider becomes interested again, yes he never took the mark away but after Daud played his part and cut off his morals that’s when the outsider got board.
    He dosnt favour one way or the other it’s the choice that interests him, seeing what you do now and pointing out the other path you could have taken.

    This may seem very off topic, but I find when the Outsider ask Daud a question, it's very interesting. Specifically the question of, "Did you know that there are eight people in the world bearing my mark?" (My wording is probably incorrect, sorry). I find this interesting because of how theOutsider says it, the question seems informative. Thought it's still a question. Why I find this interesting is that Daud actually has a lot of knowledge of "important" people in the world, and I'm not saying he would know of them all, but I think he did create a list of the few he knew that were marked (I could be incorrect, but I believe he did).

      Heath Dan it would make sense, if you have power that makes you more powerful than others, and you are a character like daud, you would keep an eye on these characters, either to make sure they don't come after you, or to try and enlist them. Either way, daud would be careful and keep tabs on them.

    I‘d say the even bigger thing to attract the Outsiders attention is ‚to be interesting‘.
    Sokolov was an influential individual who changed many lives and worked hard to communicate with the Void but the Outsider basically just left swiped him cause ‚boring‘

  • @holdingspace
    @holdingspace 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think he prefers low chaos.
    When you indiscriminately swing your sword he keeps nagging you. In dishonored 2 he literally challenges you to change the workd without spilling an ocean of blood. Furthermore, after Daud becomes an Assassin, the Outsider loses interest in him. He only reappears to Daud after he regrets killing the Empress and seriously considers quitting his job as the Whaler's leader.
