The lines at the end really gets to me every time.
"I know someday you'll have a beautiful life
    I know you'll be a star
    In somebody else's sky
    But why
    Why
    Why can't it be
    Oh can't it be mine"

I was going through a strange time in my life and in my relationship. I always loved rock music, both of my parents made sure my brother and i heard GN’R, Metallica, ACDC, Bon Jovi, the list goes on. One day, i was in my dad’s car with him and this song was finishing on the radio. I was intrigued. I asked my dad who was it, and he said pearl jam. My dad sang the rest of the song and then said to me that he loved pearl jam but didn’t listen to them for years. He was so happy. When i got home, i found this version first. I had goosebumps during the performance and when the song finished, i was crying sooo much, eddie vedder really touched my soul. Then my mom got home, i showed this version and she began to cry, just like i did, because she loves this song. This song is my favorite song of all time. I listen to “black” when i’m happy, sad, angry, frustrated… I love pearl jam and i loved your reaction to it. (Sorry for my english, i’m Portuguese so English isn’t my first language 😅)

Seattle born here. I distinctly remember hearing this for the first time as a child. Years later, I'm an adult. I find myself sitting at a bar in downtown Seattle alone waiting for a date to show up, so I sat and watched the TV behind the bar as I drank my whiskey and This unplugged session was on it. Someone behind me asked the bartender to turn it up and suddenly the entire bar started singing along word for word. I realized my date wouldn't show up, so I said fuck it and started singing too. it was a very beautiful personal moment I had with myself that i'll never forget. trust me when I say Seattle folks are different... I love my city now and forever.

Damn man, loved your reaction. You picked up on the musical things happening like the drum rolls and background melody, but also picked up on the lyrical content and meaning behind the song. Major props for a great reaction! I recommend reacting to "Nutshell - Alice In Chains" live from MTV Unplugged. That's a song with even more gravity than this one, performed incredibly well on MTV Unplugged.

It isn't though. He's refusing to let go despite his line about knowing she'll be a star in someone else's sky; he then screams, selfishly, about why it can't be his. He's centering all his thoughts and feelings on this woman and made her the focal point of his universe. Which, while romantic sounding, is also dangerous. It can very easily drive a person away instead of making them more attuned to you. Every human being is flawed and not worthy of that pedestal bordering on worship. This song is an exercise of what obsession leads to; not simply a broken heart. Eddie likely brought about her departure more so than he is a victim; and perhaps that's what his pain is really all about.

    • @thelemite935
      @thelemite935 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Most painful during the "letting go" process...which is never finalized. There is always..ALWAYS... a piece (or even pieces) which is (are) a reminding remainder.

This song first blew my life apart when I watched the premiere of this Unplugged in 1992. Sure the studio edition is amazing but THIS is the version to listen to. Eddie had a TERRIBLE flu that night (that's why he's sitting for the whole thing, he usually runs and jumps and is a maniac onstage) and it's probably why he messed the lyrics up too. As a singer, I can't imagine going through these emotions in a song, totally acoustic, in front of an enormous audience (Unplugged was a huuuuuuuuuge hit back then, we all watched every episode) while sick as a dog. I've said this on other reactions to this Unplugged but I will never ever forget standing in front of the TV holding my boom box recording this to cassette. That's how we did it!

I bought the album when I was maybe 13 or 14 back in '91 or '92. I remember watching this show back then and it blew my mind. It still gives me goosebumps now. Dave Abbruzzese played the drums with such colour and groove (totally inspired me back then when I played the drums). Gosh, those were some of the best years of my life. Care free, always curious, first loves, in awe of everything around me.

In 1991 I heard Alive, Evenflow, and Jeremy on the radio. I wasn't a huge fan of current music preferring older/classic rock. But those songs reached out to me on a level that I hadn't felt before. I bought the CD Ten. The studio version of this track is amazing. But when the MTV unplugged session happened, this song hit a level that could not be ignored. At 16 years old, I appreciated this song. As a 45 year old, I think it may be the best performance of a song I've ever seen.

Never been a fan of Pearl Jam because I have never been a fan of Eddie but "I know someday you'll have a beautiful life, I know you'll be a sun in somebody else's sky" is one of the most poetically moving lines in all of rock music. It was delivered with the kind of angst necessary to deliver the line and as such, one has to tip one's cap to Mr. Vedder.

This version of this song is achingly, cripplingly beautiful. I like your vibe and your reaction. But what made me subscribe today was your comment about singers and the intimacy with the microphone and how they grab it and hold on to it. I never noticed that and the urgent way that Eddie holds on to that microphone and clutches it and pulls it to him and then ultimately his hands just fall away is just beautiful. Your pointing that out to me has made me love this song even more and is giving it an even greater dimension of agony to me. So thank you. I am now happily subscribed.

Next up for Pearl Jam: "Jeremy" official UNCENSORED video. Inspired by a true event. It's powerful and important. Lead singer, Eddie Vedder, was compelled to write the song after reading a small article in the newspaper. It's a MUST if you're going to continue with Pearl Jam. Eddie and the guys always put their soul into every song/performance. That's why they're still going strong 30 years later. Peace....

This song was actually written by Eddie about his first love, they'd been together since he was a sophmore in HS and were living together and at 24, I believe it was, while he was in Seattle shortly after he was called n told he was going to be their new lead singer, she called him n told him she wanted to see other people...n just blew his world apart!! And he STILL had to go "home" to Cali to their apartment...
He even contemplated suicide! But I unfortunately KNOW EXACTLY what he went through!!💔

these lyrics, written by Eddie Vedder with music by Stone Gossard, are purportedly about Vedder's relationship with Beth Liebling, who Vedder dated in the 1980s and later married in 1994 (they've been divorced since 2000).

As far as the rest of them, MTV did a stellar job of setting up the sound, so you could clearly hear everything not just Eddie singing.🎤🎶🎸👊✌🌹

Actually I think how the story goes is that Eddie had a gf in high school and they were inseparable. They were both in theater together. She got pregnant and ended it. Then she broke up with him during his senior year. His family had moved to Chicago before his senior year, but he stayed back to be with her, and finish high school. Eddie did not do things in moderation, so this was traumatic for him. He dropped out of high school without finishing and moved to Chicago. After two years he moved back to San Diego and brought a new wife with him. But gf "Liz" was who the song was about. From high school. A 1996 Rolling Stone article talked about it.

But anyhow you should do Pearl Jam's "Alive" mv or unplugged n "Alive" is a kinda autobiographical song for Eddie as well and it's part of a trilogy, "Even Flow" mv, so you can see how they REALLY were on stage, n how he got the nickname 'Crazy Eddie'! "Jeremy" the uncensored mv! N there's lots MORE! But, just givin you a few for now...😂 But, he's the ONLY frontman left in the grunge-rock scene, ALL the others have passed away!😥 And Eddie was a surfer dude from Cali, the other's n the bands were out if Seattle! I believe it was his destiny!🌹💗✌
