So America isn’t about free trade after all 🤷♂️
Free trade when it works for America only
Free trade is how we lost manufacturing. China is a protectionist country as they required u.s manufactures to partner with Chinese companies in order to sell
China made u.s companies partner to sell in china. Why is only bad if the u.s favors itself but perfectly fine for other countries to be protectionist?
Fair trade
China has no intention of conducting free and fair trade.
@@rp9674- Indian reservation is American fair too
Nothing says "freedom yeah buddy" quite like a government 100% tariff on imported goods.
china is protectionist and became the richest country in the world. U.S should adopt the the same
That will keep all the low cost vehicles away from American drivers. What we want is to pay way more for the crap from GM and Ford!
@@JD-yx7be Are you sure is wasn't because Americans threw away all their manufacturing and has been buying everything from China for 30 years?
@@davidmccarthy6061 it will keep jobs away from american people, china is protectist and become the wealthiest country in the world. The u.s used to become protectionist then we abandoned it and lost jobs to overseas
@@JD-yx7be We are at war with China and it is not just economic ....they also own many of our so called representatives.
US tarrifs on Chinese cars will result in two things. Retaliation by China imposing restrictions on US companies involvement in China, which is entirely fair. The second consequence will be that US car buyers will not be able to get the benefit of the competition that drives up standards for the production of new energy vehicles. It's a loose, loose move that will see US car buyers having to put up with second rate domestic products and it won't stop Chinese brands selling in the largest car market in the world and in most other countries. The US should have learned from what China did with Tesla, allowing them to operate locally forcing their domestic producers to compete. Sadly the US seems hell bent on becoming a second rate manuafcturing country.
The US is creating a Trabant-like market, where consumers end up paying more for increasingly uncompetitive vehicles. The eventual result, like with the Trabant, will be a globally irrelevant US auto industry. It will be a slow and painful path for US consumers to get to the eventual demise. But it will happen faster now, as the technology is moving faster and the US makes up an increasingly small portion of the global car market. If we had a focus on collaboration (e.g., letting Ford and CATL open a battery JV), would could be able to stay in the game long-term.
Yes, and it is supported by strong oil company lobby. Even on social media, you have entire channels supported by commenters saying that EVs will be a disaster in cold weather, are impossible to repair, and are worse for the environment. ICE is only 30% efficient. Two thirds of your tank is going up in heat and engine wear, and the engine itself has many, many more non repairable parts. By 2030, EVs with 800km of range and batteries guaranteed for 250-500k km will be the norm. CATL is already there.
I support Chinese cars in the U.S. one caveat, 51% ownership with a U.S. partner in a U.S. plant and 100% IP sharing. Only fair.
@@larryevans6739 creates more jobs in the u.s. Free trade has only outcome is outsourcing jobs
@@JD-yx7be You are thinking checkers in a chess game. Free trade enables greater standard of living and creates new job opportunities. Having better, lower cost computers enables far more jobs using them than manufacturing them and massively increases productivity. Having a TV that costs a few hours wages compared to over a months wages when we still made them here increases the standard of living of everyone who buys a TV, while supporting far more people who provide content for that TV. Right now, we pay roughly five times as much per watt as the unsubsidized price in China for solar panels ($0.11). Because most of the jobs associated with solar are in installation/implementation and the majority of the economic benefit is in use, by multiplying the cost of that critical component, we cost net jobs and reduce economic output, while reducing standard of living by increasing the cost of energy. Not to mention that we spend twice as much on panel subsidies as those panels cost outright. As we acutally have a skilled workforce shortage in many sectors, we could be using that wasted money to upskill people for jobs that drive the economy forward.
BTW, all the pro-oil politicians support tariffs on China but not on OPEC for a reason.
when they only way u.s. can compete is to impose 100% tariff, that shows how bad u.s. dropped the ball on EV adoption. it's essentially the same as admitting failure.
Chinese subsidies is what the problem is
@@busherarepublican7644the subside works on you buy it in China. If people dont buy the car to China. The the subside doesnt work.
It shows how much we failed at developing a STEM workforce. BYD alone has 102,000+ engineers and scientists in R&D, more than any other automaker and significantly more than all US-based automakers combined. China graduates more engineers in roughly 2 years than the US has in total. The STEM talent gap (amplified by short-sighted immigration policies) means that all the nationalist subsidies and tariffs will not catch the US up. It will only keep competitive vehicles out, increase the federal deficit and inflate prices.
@@busherarepublican7644 On a per vehicle basis, US EV subsidies are multiple times as much.
Edit: and as a "Bush Era Republican" you should support free trade with China, like Bush 41 did.
@@user-jh6vt8vx4v Also the subsidies are relatively small and most have been phased out. There was a 10% purchase tax exemption on vehicles up to $41k, meaning a max subsidy of $4100 and just $1000 on a low-cost car like a Seagull. There is a new scrappage plan focused on low-income buyers with a max rebate of $1400. All much less than the $7500 US Clean Vehicle Tax Credit. Less than the $45/kWh Battery Production Tax credit on something like a Cybetruck. Not to mention all the other subsidies in the IRA, largely through the tax code, that have left Tesla never paying US corporate income tax and claiming $5 Billion in tax benefits in their net profits last year. And Tesla also got $1.8 Billion in regulatory credits last year. Overall, the EV subsidies in the infrastructure bill and IRA are significantly more than the cumulative support to date in China and spread over a fraction as many vehicles, meaning multiple times the subsidies per vehicle.
When you can't compete, just get the government to tax it.
That is what Elon Musk said
That tariff is basically saying we could've had cars for about half the price; the government's keeping car prices sky high.
Global trade tariffs lead to global depression. This is insanity, a show of weakness.

@@JD-yx7be Only in the short term. In the mid to long term, it means that US cars are less competitive than those produced outside of the US.

We won’t allow the communist to cheat and go around our objectives.
BYD is doing that already. and they are making pickup trucks named BYD Shark in Mexico
So instead of trying to compete, we retreat with reactive tariffs.
We could never compete with China due to their labor and willingness to subsidize their auto companies.

So we almost get access to decent affordable cars and then that's yanked away from us. I get the many reasons why but that also takes away any incentive for a US manufacturer to compete.
Can't compete against slave labor and basically no regulations in China....
tariff on chinese car imports is ok, but 100% is not a good idea. 50% is enough. there still should be a healthy competition, not a ban.
as most parts are made in china now where are the legacy loons going to get the parts to assemble their badges

I sure hope that the UAW doesn’t drive auto makers out of the country. The U.S. automakers already have trouble competing so what will this do for others. I’m not for huge tariffs as it generally just causes retaliation so we’ll see how this plays out.
UAW? How about the $20 billion we gave GM, which they spent $10 Billion on STOCK BUYBACKS. Yeah, the UAW is the problem. find out the facts man.
The study group must have found that there would be more votes in the key state of Michigan with higher tariffs on those imports.

Biden trying to get a few of the millions of votes he lost by killing 30,000 children in gaza?
So you are telling me that saving the planet and climate change is not priority one now.
Never was, remember that the original federal subsidy was going to be tied to union language under Biden before WV Sen. Joe Manchin's interference turned it into a "local jobs and manufacturing" push - to appease Toyota in WV.
Dirty politics, the slogans are window dressing, but at least it ended up with something positive in some ways after the dust settled.
It never was, it's getting votes. Democrats pander to the unions. Trump panders to the Luddites, KKK, oil industry, and rednecks. Conservatives want to buy cheap EVs to conserve energy, air, and money; but nobody sells them here.
Buying CEOs new mansions in the South of France and penthouses in the UAE has been the priority for years now.
Never was for legacies or politicians, it's just slogans.
It's pressure from rising startups and Chinese players that's getting the ball rolling, the old guard are just grumbling passengers on that progress bus.
How many Coal Thermal energy plants is China currently building?
Hmmm ..
Lots of them!
Who would have thought adding an electric motor would improve a 911? Maybe all that ICE gear has been holding it back all long. Oh the irony.
The Taycan is already considered one of Porsches best vehicles of all time wow
The Prius might have started the EV segment, but it did it no favors. Hybridization is a huge performance advantage! I say forget turbos and hybridize all the engines. Adding electric motors is the best thing you can do to complement an ICE powertrain.
Wouldnt it be sad if China can still make cheaper cars than UAW workers with a 100% tariff ?
Don't worry, Mary leads in electrifying America. She promised 20+ models by the end of years 😂
@@PolineChan LOL! 🤟
uaw has NOTHING to do with the cost of cars. GM ceo is paid $20 million, how many UAW members does that pay for?
The Chinese put that much tariff and more against US cars to prevent fair competition. This tariff makes trade more fair and is justified.
Wow!
That 100 percent tariff, should keep the electric car prices out of the reach for most Americans for another 10 yrs. Because American auto makers won't have to try very hard to make them affordable. And they are NOT
Tesla will probably continue to put downward pressure on prices as they seek to reach the $25k price point with their next gen platform, so not all is lost.
But yes this is not a productive approach versus actually promoting the local production of compelling EVs as much as a priority as the Chinese do for progress/modernization interests.
It's not China's fault that the Detroit legacies are scaling back their EV plans, that kinda short-termism is totally on the golden parachutes who make such decisions within those companies.
They are we have Ford vs GM vs Tesla not to mention they also have to compete against Europeam and Japanese manufacturers of EV vehicles. The traffic makes sense when the Chinese companies are so heavily subsidized by the Chinese government.
We should copy Chinese policies and require BYD to form a joint venture with GM.
@@trentdebaere7581 Any productive stuff that helps us catch up on EVs, yes.
Blunt tariffs merely signals retreat, an admission of un-competitiveness. It wont stop China from dominating abroad as they begin to offer cheaper and/or superior EV products, might even be positive PR for them.
There are smarter ways to either make our local players evolve into a competitive EV position, promote new players to take their place, or "localize" foreign players.
Any of those are smarter approaches that could preserve/grow/modernize the jobs and industry of the future within our nation.
@@AllanSustainabilityFan Tesla sales are continuing to fall that is the only thing forcing it to lower prices. The news has given Tesla a very slight bump but the Chinese will get around the tariffs by building assembly factories in the US.

China will just make all the parts and assemble here USA . They may just buy Ford 😆😵😆
I wouldn't be surprised if BYD tries to buy Ford eventually, or more likely Chrysler form Stellantis. I'm sure it will be blocked somehow but still, they are growing fast and are already taking a lot of GM and Toyota's market share in areas they are allowed to compete.
I wish some Japanese brand would buy Ford, export good management techniques BACK here, and make reliable cars. And, they're not Commies. But they should give up on both ICE and hydrogen.

When we thought we may get a break on car prices made in China they slap tariffs.....
Well we will have to see what Tesla prices due with Optimus and vision based AI, which is why Giga Mexico probably won't happen since the low wage workforce won't be needed. Some Chinese auto factories already use a bare minimum of human workers (pretty much just load the materials for the factory robots to use then a few final inspections that AI can't do, for now), one reason for cheap prices. I'm still willing to bet in time lobbyists have it so the EV rebates will only be applied to UAW made cars.
Dude, Tesla was already committed (i.e. had already started digging) to that 500 million dollar number this year. It is next year and beyond that they will back off on new sites and will spend money instead on expanding existing ones.
Most of the 500 member team that was laid off was in planning and procurement of new sites. Ergo they will not be needed so much once the new sites already underway are finished. Deals will be cut with other EV charging providers to take over the locations Tesla is dropping plans to build on.
Reason: New sites are getting more and more expensive as utilities are dragging their feet to lay the power lines needed.
Also govt. money for installing chargers seems to be based on how many chargers NOT how many sites. Therefore expanding existing sites means more govt money faster....good business decision. Finally, BP and other providers have expressed interest in developing more sites AND buying Tesla chargers from Tesla. This is a win-win as Tesla doesn't have to pay for the site but makes money on the equipment sale.
Thanks, this is a good explanation.
It’s 300% Import duty Tax in Thailand! Oh Well That’s Life! So I buy Used and renew the Beast

Raising tariffs on Chinese imports is really dumb.
1) Chinese made EVs are fantastic quality and will be at a cost Americans can afford. This will speed up adoption of EVs and reduce CO2.... which supposedly is a major goal of the Biden Administration. This kills that because American OEMs are not going to make a lot of EVs as they don't seem to be able to make them cheaply enough to make a profit on them.
2) The Chinese govt is likely to slap restrictions on exporting car parts to US OEMs. Cadillac is made exclusively in China and exported to the US... that may completely stop. US OEM EVs get way more than half their parts from China.... some come through middlemen in South korea but originate in China. If China retaliates you can kiss goodbye any hope in the world of US OEMs EVER making a competitive EV. This means that they will lose the entire Chinese and EU markets which are quickly changing over to EV. When Tesla brings out robo-taxis OEM marketshare in their only remaining market (the US) will collapse as people in cities give up car ownership all together.
This move will actually be looked back at as the beginning of the collapse of US OEMs.

You are mistaken. China lets them go bankrupt and out of business. Far more than the US. China cultivated an entrepeneurial surge that created a lot of new automakers, but did not stop them from failing. They are actually publically encouraging consolidation. A normally functioning market sees government interventions all day every day.
If you want to know what's going on, you pretty much have to throw away the front page, and all the headlines and editorials and advertising, and just read the inside pages of the thickest and heaviest newspapers. Especially the last half of the articles.
game over for tesla? its a bad move for the US for 100% tariff
No, because byd relies on welfare to lower the price after copying the tesla innovations.
china is giving huge welfare checks, compares to the tiny 7500 EV buyers get after spending 50k
@@dertythegrower Like the USA does with oil and gas? F off
@@dertythegrower Wouldn't we want to benefit from those huge welfare checks?
@@foxtrotwolf6081 If the USA makers had brains they'd make cheap EVs and the $7500 would price them lower than used ICE.
2:46 - yeah, we've got a name for that in the industry and it's called DAMAGE CONTROL. logic dictates, if he sincerely intended to spend $500 Million expanding Superchargers (which he isn't) then some of that money would invariably be getting spent on PAYING THE SALARIES of many of the people he just got finished firing. ladies and gentlemen, "It's raining bullsh!t" so like the song says, "Go outside and turn your umbrellas UPSIDE DOWN..."
It's pronounced "man tie"! Get it right.
Please explain to me how “Elon Musk is backtracking“ on supercharger expansion and then in the next sentence, he indicates that he’s going to spend $500 million to expand the supercharger if the structure. What the heck is going on with your reporting?
He fired the SC team, then later decided he really needs more SCs.
"Free market capitalism"
So Musk again says one thing and does another, I wonder if his new corporate customers whispered in his ear something about massive law suits for breach of contract?

If China boycotts or does the same to US cars imagine the Outrage by the western media 😂😂😂 it would be fun to see US being the puppets.
China required u.s manufactures to partner with Chinese companies to sell in china
@@JD-yx7beTesla giga factory in China is 100% owned by Tesla, so stop your nonsense
Tesla indicated they would be slowing rollout of new sites, not stopping rollout. So announcing coin that's going to be spent on new sites is not them changing their minds.
Thank you for this statement. It's like the world is full of people who have lost their minds. Nothing has changed from post of growing slowly and spending 500mil. Auto line do better.
You will soon see what happens to Tesla
So far, they just keep making more and more cars.
You will soon see what happens. Period.
Right?
It’s ok the US can keep its rubbish
There's no such thing as "exporting excess capacity". That's not how import/export works. What is exported is only what is ordered for what the seller expects to be able to sell. You can't just bring a ship full of cars and just dump them at someone's port without the buyer willing to receive them.
Autoline reported half a story, then claim Tesla and Elon are backtracking. Maybe report everything factual instead of what you think?
While I'm very supportive of Tesla and what Elon Musk has done for the planet, the way he handled the Supercharger thing was the exact sort of ego-driven behavior that is documented in the Isaacson bio time and time again. He clearly got angry with Tinucci and decided to make an example of her and her entire team. Then, after he calmed down, he became rational again.
As for Autoline, they reported what happened, and continue to do so. The issue here isn't Autoline, it's the fact that Musk really should have had an intervention. In the end this may work out just fine, but the way Musk handled this situation was far from ideal. (I'm a Tesla shareholder)
@@dangrass They oughta fire Elon and let him play with his robots and rockets. Buy Ford's electric division and make some decent cars together.
@@dangrass Musk is a man baby who throws tantrums at the slightest question of his decisions. The Supercharger section was gotten rid of to try and save money.
@@dangrass You know, if you fire everyone and only hire back the people who do the work, a company is much more efficient and the people who actually do something are happier with the huge pay raise.
@@dangrass The way Elon handled it is exactly how he has handled it for the last 10 years. It was ideal.

One of us should buy stock in GM instead.
