TÝR: An interview with Heri Joensen & Amon Djurhuus

  • When folk-metal exploded into heavy music culture at the start of the 2000's, the Faeroese band Týr found themselves wrapped up in this classification. The problem is that it's technically correct. Folk music from Faeroes is completely vocal, so Týr's original concept was to combine these songs with classic metal music. With this in mind the band created five albums of lush, progressive hard rock and metal, harmonized in multiple languages.
    While this approach won them many passionate fans, for their 2009 release "By The Light of The Northern Star", the band tightened their style. Songs become shorter and more concise, and English was used far more frequently. While the ethic and mythological influences remained, their songs now had far more in common with traditional heavy metal than ever before.
    This change has been commercially beneficial for the band. Týr recently signed to Metal Blade records for the release of their latest album "Valkyrja", which has already become the biggest release of their career. As they began a long North American tour with Children of Bodom, I had a chance to chat with frontman Heri Joensen and drummer Amon Djurhuus who speak candidly about the roots and development of the band, including the change from their early "obscure" sound.

      +Maru Ato Seems to be the case with most metal. Some songs/albums just need a few listens before I can decide if I like them.

    Fun fact: Terji Skibenæs will tattoo his autograph on you if ask. Also, he's our only licensed tattoo artist and overcharges due to his busy schedule and high demand. Just get inked in Denmark. Sorry Terji XD

    unlistenable?!?! Some of my favorite stuff is on the early albums and are generally what people would regard as progressive folk metal...... including the uncredited very last a capella track on How Far To Asgard In fact if anyone has a translation and text in Faeroese of that track I'd love to have it, because I want to learn it.

    • @SarahAParis

    How are they saying their older albums are less listenable?! I started listening to TYR with Land and Ragnarök - which I still consider their best albums - and loved them right from the start. I really hope they don't get too deep into this mindset of "easy listening"...

    I don't think there's a need for so much discussion on their development of sound through the albums. All bands change as they move forward and each captures the moment at that time, as Dave Weiner said. All Tyr is great! Eric The Red or Ragnarok are probably my favourite though!

    Folk metal exploded in heavy music culture at the start of the 2000's? More like the 1990's! Bands such as Storm were doing it way back in '95, and they certainly weren't the first.

    Heri had a good point tho- too much talking man. I wanna hear his sweet voice ;) Find questions the artists can elaborate on by themselves and let them do the talking, 90% of this was babble. Its hard when you get an artist that won't elaborate because of language barriers or not having much to say by Heri is an impressive linguist and just looked really confused when you asked him such convoluted and leading questions. I'm impressed he found much more to say after you said it all for him. Not trying to be mean at all it just seems a shame. Interviewing artists is hard but better to have a short interview than a long one that's unlistenable.

    • @MrAsh183
      @MrAsh183 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also check your pronunciations- the only thing worse than saying an artist's name incorrectly is saying the name of the band itself wrong. Its 'toor', not 'teer' :/

    • @georgeferguson9093
      @georgeferguson9093 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ashton Brenton its not pronounced 'toor'..the ý in faroese sounds like 'uy'. 'Tuyr'. And the band have previously said that they don't care if westerners pronounce it like 'tear'
