2016 Hyundai Tucson 1.6T - Redline: Review

  • Looking to add a big dose of style and sophistication into the compact crossover market, Hyundai takes its entry-level 2016 Tucson and graphs on its Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 styling, a potent 1.6L turbocharged engine with a quick-shifting DCT transmission, and an interior that reaches new levels of luxury and refinement. We feel the new powertrain combination will have the enthusiast smirking but is that really what buyers in the segment are looking for?

    Okay. Lets discuss the elephant in the room. The reason why the first two gens didn't do well, is because it was freaking ugly!
    This gen is gorgeous. I bet it outsells the Sportage now.

      4-years later, how’re you doing with the Tucson?

    • @sais9221
      @sais9221 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Outofurleaguex3 we drive this car locally traveling from home to work and to stores and occasionally travel to another city/town. I don't really pay much detail attention to the gas mileage but we refill gas tank every 2 weeks. I'd say the gas/mileage is good but not great. Lucky this car is designed for regular gas and is recommended by the manual.

    • @sais9221

      @@jtlovespi2493 since we only drive mostly locally the car still feels like new! So far so good. The only few complaints is the audio system. I mean for the limited edition, the audio/speakers system it came with is disappointing. If you care about listening to music in the car with nice bass... upgrade it to better system in the option. I don't know if it is the transmission system or the software but the car jerks at times when changing from gear one and two. Maybe this will be fixed with the latest software update which I have not done yet (received the letter from the manufacturer). The other part is I wish the body width is a little bit wider because with 2 kids, the car feels crampy at times (maybe that's just me). One more, there's no USB ports in the back passenger seat area so if you can upgrade that do it. I wish I did that. They tires it came with are junk as it blew up the first year and the ramp that came with the car is useless as it bent when we tried to change the blown tired. The storage area is decent and we can fit lots of groceries items back there. The sun/moon roof is holding up great. Oh btw, the AC works great too! To be honest, for our family of 4, the 7 seater truck would work better and I don't mean the Sante Fe.

    I really like all your reviews, always very objective. However after watching many of your reviews I can say that I always see you testing the highest trimms with all the goodies so it actually can be kind of decieving in a way because most people dont end up getting the absolute highst trimm

    I got a 2016 6 months ago, and I'm pretty happy with it. No problems yet with the DCT, the Tuscon feels lighter and faster than the 2.4L Sportage we also have. The turbo lag is barely noticeable in the sport mode and just really like it so. Seats feel fine for me, I'm 6'3" at 270lbs and it's comfortable to me...I do wish it had a boost gauge as I still want to follow the old school turbo rules of no boost 3 minutes after startup, and before shut down. I immediately put a Hyundai oil filter on it after purchase and used Pennzoil Ultra Platnium 5w30. Pennzoil has the second best detergent package next to Amsoil per lab tests and since I don't now the previous owners oil change habits...

    What a captivating little crossover and is perfect for that college student or high school graduate considering this Hyundai is an eco-friendly vehicle that is light on the wallet. The color combinations are well thought out and the overall vehicle is very practical yet luxurious with the leather wrapped dashboard that adds a sense of elegance and class. And with America's best warrant I cannot think of another crossover for college students or anyone for that matter that can find another crossover to match Hyundai's warranty and value. Well done Hyundai.

    I am wondering why the gas pedal clicking is not mentioned. The clickdown mechanism from the manual explained: "Use the kickdown mechanism for maximum acceleration. Depress the accelerator pedal beyond the pressure point. The automatic transmission will shift to a lower gear depending on the engine speed."
    This is common on higher end/European cars. Most late model Audi/BMW/Mercedes vehicles have this too. A nice feature, because the computer doesn't have to guess when you want the transmission to kickdown 1 or 2 gears, or when you just want to accelerate ahead of somebody without any drama.

    Hyundai has now released a new SE Plus trim level that pretty much takes the Limited trim without the ultimate package and matches it with the SE powertrain and exterior. It allows you to get that nice limited interior (and nice Nav screen) at a much lower pricepoint and is the best choice if you can't stand the DCT, but otherwise like the Tucson. I guess Hyundai was listening to all the complaints about so much stuff missing on the lower trim levels. Hopefully, they keep this trim level for a while.

    I have this in this color but not awd... I like the warranty... the ac is loud .. my son has an older Honda Accord with what seems like a very well functioning and quiet ac... the interior is just ok as far as I am concerned... but it is a comfortable drive... but the get up and go power is weak... which is fine with me, but if u like power, mine has the wimpier engine and it is pretty whimpy... I also had to replace all the door opening locks mechanisms... can’t remember the part needed... covered by warranty... all the doors at one point would not open... I’m just about at 50,000 miles so happy to still have b2b warranty for another ten ... so far so good , but once it hits a hundred k miles, that will really tell how well these things are really made... I plan to keep as long as possible as it is paid off. Would love to hear from other Tucson owner!

If you compare to others in its class (rav4, crv) the prices are extremely similar, and toyota and honda are worldwide renowned for their outstanding reliability while hyundai is still trying to prove itself worthy of comparison, so objectively i would argue they pack more "value".

    I have the 2016 limited turbo. I experience lack of acceleration sometimes. When I timed it once it was 2 seconds slower from 30-70km/h than usual. Same road, same driving mode. This is an occasional occurrence though. They couldn't do anything about it. After 2 months the air conditioning died. They repaired it, since then the dashboard has been squeaking. They did not put it back well. It needs to be fixed again. Coolant goes below minimum between regular maintenance services. I will ask what they have to say about this. So good luck to everyone who buys this product. This is my first and last Hyundai for sure.

    Wow, with all the technology that hyundai tucson has. You can only find them in high end luxury cars, like BMW, Lexus, Audi and Range Rover. At the moment the mazda cx5, Toyota rav 4, Subaru forester, jeep Cherokee and Nissan xtrail, needs to improve there game because this hyundai tucson is well above the rest. Apart from all the technology it has, you can't go pass the huge panoramic roof and that sexy, sporty exterior!! Lucky here in Australia I bought the 2L turbo diesel with 136kw and 400nm of torch.

    • @akipadre9752
      @akipadre9752 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, maybe you should done your research before you bother replying to my comment. You realise that mazda cx5 akera is 2.2L TURBO diesel, LoL? So, you don't want turbo in your suv, so you want an underpowered SUV? or you want to throw in a natural aspirated v6 and consume more gas?? You realise that this new technology is not just for show, but it's main role is to save lives?? You must have a bad taste in style mate, that front Grill on that mazda cx5 iS horrible, yuk!! Your comment makes me laugh, do some research before even commenting back please, haha!!!

    • @akipadre9752
      @akipadre9752 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, you know why you mentioned memory seat and nothing else?? Because that's what mazda cx5 has only got over the hyundai tucson, haha big fail !!
      Does mazda cx5 have, rear air vents?? Does it have automatic tailgate?? Does it have a Gigantic panoramic sun roof?? Does it have a heated and cooling seats?? Can you fold the rear seats back?? Does it have automatic wipers?? Does it have adaptive headlights?? Does it have lane assist?? Mazda cx5 has a small boot space....it's underpowered.....you have to manually open the boot....that front grill makes me sick.....and mazda has the dangerous Takata airbag?? Dude your not going to win, so just please don't embarrass yourself even more, haha!!

    • @akipadre9752
      @akipadre9752 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Omg, mazda cx5 akera does have memory seat I should know because my brother inlaw has the new mazda cx5 akera. The reason why you don't care that mazda cx5 doesn't have rear air vents because you can't have it on a mazda cx5 and its not even an upgrade option, fail haha!! Mazda cx5 is the only mid size suv that doesn't have power tailgate and mazda cx5 cost more then most SUVs??? A mid size Suv that you pay more then $50k top of the range here in Australia that's doesn't have power lift gate, rear air vents should be standard for that price?? Again your only hating on the panoramic roof because again mazda cx5 can't have it, not because you don't like it, fail haha!! Its like would you buy a 30inch lcd tv or a 70inch lcd tv for the same price, fail haha!! I guess you never drive your car on a very hot days, A/C will not be enough to cool your ass, again your only hating cooling seats because again mazda cx5 doesn't even have it as an upgrade option, haha!! With all wheel drive and the 1.6 L turbo, how is the lag between you hitting the accelerator and the car joining traffic from an on ramp? Can you quantify it?

    • @biffybilliamson
      @biffybilliamson ปีที่แล้ว

      It's awful for me. Started at only 80,000km now I have 109,000km on it and it's like the transmission is slipping when trying to get up a hill. Or zipping around a slower driver. Sometimes just getting through a green light it lags so badly. I feel like I'm going to get rear ended

    • @biffybilliamson
      @biffybilliamson ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Overonator it was just at the dealership a month after I bought it. They had it for 3 months. It only had 80,000km on it at the time. They had to replace the catalytic converter and the turbo fell off when they went to replace the catalytic converter. So after they put it back together. They told me they did an update. But I don't know to what extent. I think I'll take it back and see if they can update something specific to the transmission module or whatever the hell they do. It's getting scary. I'm thinking about ditching it..

    Can someone answer this? Why does this Tucson looks a smaller in size, if I were to compare this to a CRV? Any thoughts?

    • @vinmac123

      It is smaller than a crv and RAV4. Hyundai also has a Santa Fe sport which is a little larger than the crv. It's all in what you are looking for.

    I have a 2016 Tucson Eco in the Burgundy Red i bought last July, and i love it. Granted, it doesn't have all the tech like in the new vehicles nowa days, but that's an easy fix. I've already found a new Android head unit, spare tire subwoofer, and an aftermarket power lift gate kit. So im like, why spend $40,000 on a new car? That's basically an IPad on wheels when i could just build my own and not have car payments.

    • @DriveAndBeDriven
      @DriveAndBeDriven 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Benjy Warren, It is probably most likely due to the more, fuel efficient tuning of the Hyundai Tucson. The Veloster Turbo is a lot more performance oriented. :-)

    well...if the turbo is a concern what about the 2.0 non-turbo as an alternative and how does the 2.0 stack up vs the CVT of Honda/Nissan. I've owned a CVT transmission in my Maxima and NEVER AGAIN...I don't care how much CVT tech improves and there's just something so cheesy about Honda CVTs giving "fake" shifts.. I don't know...will have to compare this with the RAV4 or CX-5 I guess..

    • @iDrive4fun93
      @iDrive4fun93 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My parents own a 2015 CX5 with the 2.5, and they absolutely love it. It has some get up and go, its much, much quicker than there underwhelming little Suzuki SX4, and it gets better fuel mileage. I personally prefer Hyundai, they have considerably improved, I own a 2008 Sonata with 203k, and it runs perfect. There turbo engines have proven themselves to be pretty reliable, minus the one in the Genesis Coupe, which is actually sourced from Mitsubishi so its not a Hyundai built engine. The RAV4 is super reliable and has good resale. Depends what you want, if you want power than go with the Hyundai, if you want resale go with the Toyota, and if you want a little bit of both the CX-5.

  • @mextijuas5
    @mextijuas5 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like it and next year is between this one or the cx5. 3 and 4th is the rav4 or crv. I just think is too expensive and it's like 5k more than a fully loaded rav4. I'm not into all that safety features since I'm a safe driver and that just makes dumbs drivers. I really enjoy driving on long trips, but for just a daily commute I want something soft, so I'll get rid of those big wheels since is dumb to have such a big wheels in a crossover. big wheels are good on sports cars, bit for a family a want something smaller and where I live is full of big potholes. the front gauges need to be nicer since it's has a small screen and it needs to be more futuristic like Hondas or fords.

    Thought the Santa Fe Sport competed with the CR-V, Rav 4, Jeep Cherokee, Nissan Rogue, etc. Actually Santa Fe Sport competes with the Murano. I find it funny how the underdogs Jeep Cherokee, and Hyundai Tucson, offer more than the main players. CR-V, Rogue, and Rav-4, only heated front seats, and usually no rear reat heat. Cherokee, and Tucso, rear seat heat, and ventilated fronts. Best part is, you can bargain and get less off of the Cherokee, and Tucson, so you really get more bang for your buck. Apple Car Play, and Android Auto is on the Tucson. I have a 2016 Sonata, and it has both. I have an Android phone. Kept dropping out though, so I stopped using it. I don't have navigation, but have the Nav ready touchscreen. Also, the Tucson headlights turn on the Limited Ultimate model, when making turns.
