I've heard both the Joni Mitchel version and this .... and I like both. Counting Crows kept the original tune, while putting their own spin on the music. (I really loved the acoustic solo.) What's kinda interesting is that the CD version is different from the radio play version. On the CD Vanessa Carlton is not a back-up voice.
This is a very good cover version although I prefer the Joni Mitchell original. I agree, what a great voice! Loved the music video too - a perfect match for the song. On the topic of cover versions, what makes a cover version great? This is obviously very subjective, but when the band performing the cover can make the song their own, then it will be amazing. At the moment my favorite cover version is The Polyphonic Spree's version of Nirvana's "Lithium". If you get the chance, I highly recommend checking this out. Other notable mentions are: "Common People" by William Shatner (original by Pulp) "Always On My Mind" by Pet Shop Boys (original by Elvis Presley) "Where Is My Mind" by Tkay Maidza (original by The Pixies) "Higher Ground" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers (original by Stevie Wonder) I'm sure there are plenty of other songs which could be added to this list 😊.

Computer says there are two bands called 'Crow', one a late 60's-70's blues-rock outfit from Minneapolis-St.Paul most noted for a song called Evil Woman (Don't Play Your Games With Me) that was covered by Black Sabbath and Ike & Tina Turner, and a band from 1990s Sydney said to be the best band in Australia since The BIrthday Party. I don't know either of them so I don't have any 'Crow' recomendations. I always thought this was a very nice and pleasant sort of protest song that comes over as a bit naive - of course they're going to pave over paradise and put up a parking lot! Don't know if this news story made it to the States but in 2012 they found remains thought to be of Plantagenet King Richard III (killed at the battle of Bosworth in 1485) under a car park belonging to a Government Social Services Department benefits office in Leicester. "A taxi, a taxi, my kingdom for a big yellow taxi..." (with apologies to Bill Shakespeare)
Also 'Stone The Crows' - a blues-rock band from Glasgow in Scotland, 1969-73. Mainly remembered for the electrocution of guitarist and founder Les Harvey on stage in front of a live audience in Swansea, Wales. Apparently, wires were damaged by the audience and the road crew attempted to make repairs but overlooked a loose ground wire.
