Hi guys, I'm a Malaysian who love eating durians. Growing up eating durians of different varieties over 40 years. I think you guys should eat fresh durians to really appreciate them. That is the best way to know & enjoy eating durians!
As a child, I used to spend my school holidays at my maternal grandpa's place near Batu Pahat, Johore. He had 5 acres of land planting Durians. During the harvest season, every morning the whole front porch and the yard will be filled with more than 1000 durians for distribution to JB and Singapore. Those days there was no D13, D101 etc. Only kampong Durians. Still remember having scoops of durians over a bowl of steamy rice for breakfast! 😁 Such wonderful memories.
@@KumaarFamily Kampong durians are like the blind bag of durians. You never know what you might get. Sometimes it'll be creamy, or taste like coffee, maybe even like one of the other styles of durian.
I agree because I'm from a malaysia and I know what will happen when you drink karbohidrat drink with eating durian. Your stomach will explode and you will die with sugaries
It is common to hear someone say that it is taste like garlic, onion, mango, and sock (the smelling). Recently I watch some video from Middle Eastern-Russia, they said it taste like chicken. Now that make me curious how the tongue work for individual and how durian can effect such different thought and taste for each one. It is unique for everyone unlike berry that commonly sweet, coffee that commonly bitter. But glad they didn't like the durian. If they are addicting to durian, it is hard to find a better quality of durian. Lesson learnt from iChang, Japanese that recide in Hong Kong that love Malaysian culture.

We add tons of garlic to cook a dish for 3-4 people. Westerners usually add 1 clove of garlic. Imagine 1 clove of garlic to one slab of meat would taste like, probably very mild almost to none for southeast asians, but what I see when watching western chefs cooking, they always want to avoid “strong” garlic flavours 😂 so yeah.. you can say southeast asians has wild taste palate for a better understanding.
I have exactly the same opinion. The first mistake they made is to have this negative thought about it. They already associated the durian with nasty things. The second mistake, they try to associate the taste with something they have experienced before. In Singapore, I always try to get "Red Prawn" variety for my son because it is sweeter and hence easier on the palate for beginners. My personal experience is to condition people (that you want to convert) by exposing them to the smell as many times possible but without forcing them to eat it. Just watch others enjoy it. Slowly theyq will find it less repulsive. Accepting the smell is key. Durian unlike other fruits, has a very complex taste and smell, especially the expensive ones.

Little pinch, little shake and little sniff. True master of durian knowns how well it goes just by doing the three steps. Pinch the thorn to know how much it aged, shake to know if it was mushy or hard, smell to know it is bitter sweet or sweet. Old = soft thorn = over smushed = watery, not recommend even it taste good. Medium one's you'll know how to identify it. My personal love are soft meat, bitter sweet, white yellowish, and stayed over night in the refrigerator. Yumbo!
Durian is durian, not an onion..and that is the problem when they set in their mind that the taste is like onion, mango..etc. taste should be creamy, sweet, sour or bitter....for example, apple taste sweet or sour, crunchy or not..not apple taste like pear or watermelon. Every fruits have unique taste.
I don't get it though. They keep describing it as garlic flavour but it doesn't smell anything like garlic to me. Maybe it's the strongest food smell that they can relate to.
@@hreaper I notice that most of the westerner are very poor on describe taste. onion, garlic !!!!???? Really !!!??? Come on, Did they really know how onion and garlic really taste like. Every time I watch the video about frozen durian, make me wonder how it tastes like. Can you tell me if the taste is the same as the fresh durian or different?
If you have access to durian you can easily figure it out for yourself. Fresh durian will always be the best if you love durian. But if you're new, like the guy said, its more muted, its more shall we say tolerable.
kaione309 I live in Canada, so have to make do with the frozen imports, and after numerous attempts and experiments have more or less figured the best way to get my money’s worth(they cost $$$$ here). However, on the occasional visit back to the old country, I’ll treat my family to the REAL stuff freshly collected from the plantations. Man, that’s an experience worth the cost of the long flight home many times over👍👍😁😁😋😋😋 Hope that answers you’re question😊
Your friends are great, I like them. They were willing to try durian, and they gave honest comments. Unlike some other TH-camrs who is over reacting when they try durian, and it makes me feel fake.

Happy you at least got two different varieties, most durian reviews only get the gross frozen version from the grocery store, that has probably been in that freezer for like a year or more... Best place to order durian is yearofthedurian, they have a bunch of varieties and it's frozen fresh picked, but you have to order like 20 packets at a time (they ship you a box). If you eat a lot of it it's worth it, you can keep it frozen and thaw one packet at a time.

I think ur friend in grey shirt gave the best taste desriptions for all 3 kinds of durians and I like how he developed & changed his perceptions of how those durians smelled & tasted like each time he tried a new kind of durian. 👏👏👏 Eating durians and other Malaysian fruits are like having adventures, a journey. Even for Malaysians, we don’t eat most of them regularly but occasionally especially during family gatherings, celebrations, picnics or camping with your friends, we would bring some of the fruits such as durians, rambutans, mangoes or jackfruits (whenever they’re available) and have them together with our friends and families. 🥳 There are so many different fruits and delicious foods available in our country so we won’t get bored with eating the same foods/fruits throughout the year and we get to keep exploring and eating them as the season changes. Some Malaysian fruits are easy to handle, some require a bit of work, while some are just overwhelming (at first). 😁 Eating Malaysian fruits are like having adventures, and adventures are fun. I’ve said this twice now. It sparks conversation, brings people closer together, keeping joy and enjoying our lives every now and then. 😁 I think a better way to describe the taste is like a caramelized sautéed onions and garlic with some slightly overripe mangoes and bananas mushed together and turned into a custard-y fruit dessert! 😂😂😂 But for the experts, they all taste like durians because any good durians are just very good durians! Wait till you get to crave on durians so much that when you had that first bite of a really good durian for a long time, the taste feels so good that your eyes turned white and become ‘high-on-durian’ LOL. I hope that sounds right cuz it happened to me. 😅😂😝
Just saw the vids Kumar Famly. Can't stop watching the video runs that you and family made. Kalau dekat Sabah. Untuk sejukkan badan atau overheating ketika makan durian. Kami letak air minum dalam kulit dalam durian itu dan minum air tersebut. Banyak membantu untuk kurangkan heatiness. 👏👏👏

I am the type of person who eat durian but not actually enjoy it that much... I prefer sweet. I hope people don't think of durian as a disgusting food, but a very good food Greetings from Indonesia

D13 or red prawn. Actually should start with red prawn. It's the sweetest orangey durian cultivar. I love it and most singaporeans love it. Really sweet.
My Aussie husband and i love sweet tasty durian - singapore
So proud with u kumar sebb ajari omputih US mkn duyan.. Ketawa sya liht.. God bless u kumar n famly.. Bangga ank malaysia berjaya d negara org yg begitu jauh. Seluruh famly mu berbangga dgn mu kumar n all malaysian proud with u.
Durian does taste like a creamy custard dessert! Great job, Kumar and Rachel!
Thanks so much!
They sell fresh durians at Tropical Fruits in San Jose. They are shipped directly from Thailand. However! They are not ripe and ripening them properly in the climate here is not easy.
Oh my gosh!!! How have we never heard of that before! Just looked it up on Yelp and it looks amazing. Thanks for the rec, definitely will be checking that out!
Durian smells far more better than cheese ( which is my favourite too). If you eat the right durian, it's heaven 😋😋😋
I still remember one of my friends from USA surprsing she say what is that,I say this we call durian local fruit. She say she can't smell the durian smelling I toll her is ok when it peel out u can taste it so sweet and delicious. Then she try to ate durian u know she say,OMG..it taste good and delicious. She say she will came to Malaysia again if she have chance to visit Malaysia.
You have eat fresh durian
Its so good
Dude we cant help it. For some of us, it tasted like gasoline. But I like the ice cream version.
My kumaar made me as malaysian proud!! Kudos bro!
Thank you so much! I won't be able to do it without you guys, my viewers. Appreciate you all so much ❤
Cool. Gotta love your friends’ positive attitude. They were willing to try altho they were not used to it. ♥️
'Roasted garlic in socks' 😂😂😂 poor them... But they're doin good for first time trying
I don't get it though. They keep describing it as garlic flavour but it doesn't smell anything like garlic to me.
Maybe it's the strongest food smell that they can relate to.
✌️😂😂😂✌️
@@hreaper yeah I tot the same too bcus it's something that they never taste before... That's all they can say to describe it
Yeah, I'm proud that at least they made the effort to try it
@@hreaper I notice that most of the westerner are very poor on describe taste.
onion, garlic !!!!???? Really !!!??? Come on, Did they really know how onion and garlic really taste like. Durian just taste like durian, maybe I can say it has a mixture of mango, banana, fresh milk, butter, vanilla and alcohol combine together.
Kumar, satu ja aku nak habaq, hang memang sempoi! Your friends are 1000 times cooler than any other people who have tried this gem. Tima kasih sebab tolong promosi buah durian kita!
Seeing first reaction of people eating durians is entertaining and funny! Some might hate it, some might get confused the yummy sweet taste with garlic which come to think of it yeah it kinda does and some digs it completely. I personally love it but still complains about the smell. Tempoyak goreng pusu garing makan dengan nasi panas, boleh tambah 2 3 pinggan lol. Take care you guys as always ❤
Its an acquired taste this Durian..only in South East Asia/Malaysia..😍😍😍
Thank you so much! You take care too ya ❤
Ni baru betul baggakan malaysia di luar. Terbaik bro. Ak doakan ko success. Selamat maju jaya
very good video. very entertaining. I love watching your videos. I'm from Malaysia
Thank you so much! I'm so happy that you enjoy our videos.
so damn proud to see your effort in trying to convert American friends to try durian...malaysia boleh dude!!!
Every time I watch the video about frozen durian, make me wonder how it tastes like. Can you tell me if the taste is the same as the fresh durian or different?
Very different, taste more acidic. More nasty smell.
If you have access to durian you can easily figure it out for yourself. Fresh durian will always be the best if you love durian. But if you're new, like the guy said, its more muted, its more shall we say tolerable.
For me personally, I prefer chilled or frozen durian over the fresh one because it taste like eating ice cream when chilled.
kaione309 I live in Canada, so have to make do with the frozen imports, and after numerous attempts and experiments have more or less figured the best way to get my money’s worth(they cost $$$$ here). However, on the occasional visit back to the old country, I’ll treat my family to the REAL stuff freshly collected from the plantations. Man, that’s an experience worth the cost of the long flight home many times over👍👍😁😁😋😋😋 Hope that answers you’re question😊
Its very very different. The fresh one tastes and smells much better.
Your friends are great, I like them. They were willing to try durian, and they gave honest comments. Unlike some other TH-camrs who is over reacting when they try durian, and it makes me feel fake.
Your son is gonna be a durian connoisseur!
Hopefully! 😃
6:14 she explained the real durian taste really well, i'm impressed. Greetings from Malaysia.
Stop making durian popularrrrrr...! It’s killing us when more and more durians were exported and local prices has skyrocketed like Elon’s rocket since!
I'm sorrryyy! 😂I just can't help it.
I also say, sekarli all the best fruits gets exported, and locals are left to fight over the crumbs🤪
@@tenga3tango Don't worry. The Chinese are already planting durians trees through grafting in Sanya, Hainan Island. In 5years time, tons of D13, D24 and Musang King will be produced from there for the insatiable Chinese appetite for Durians. ☺
I hope what you say is true, meanwhile from now to then , more musang king goes to china
@@tenga3tango The Chinese had bought some a lot of land in Pahang and Johor through local proxies which is not too legal and risks to them as well. So some of them had sought to planting them in southern Hainan which has tropical weather.
I too do not fancy paying RM50 to RM70 per kg for Musang king.
rasa bangga plak jadi Malaysian... sebab boleh makan durian ... lepas tonton video nie... Hehehe
First bite taste like garlic, onion.second bite 😁definitely durian 👍🏾..musang king looks delicious
u all shouldl eat durian on winter day. At least can sleep good at night

They should have tried the XO durian, more liquor flavour. Chilled non-baked durian cheesecake is nice too.
best sgt mkn durian
i really cant believe that a so young two years old american boy could love durian so much. omg,,as a malasian citizen,,an of course i planted the musang king as well as the ioi,,i am really proud with the boy. bravo...i definately sure,,he will come to malaysia in the future seeking for fresh durian that fall from the tree.
Durian and coffee, two things that made for each other.
i like durian...i try...durian + coconut milk + suger + daun pandan...and then u masak...u cicah dgn roti...sedap
I love your content! As a Malaysian its nice seeing foreigners try our food :) You guys should do a Mamak Kumaar with your friends! Or straight up make them try Banana Leaf and eat with their hands! :)
This is a great idea Desiree! We will plan to do Mamak Kumaar with many other foods in the future. Banana leaf meal will be tough to make but I will try my best 😀
@@KumaarFamily hey if you guys are ever looking for recipes theres another great Malaysian youtuber in Germany I think (whom I consider to be my internet mom teaching me how to cook). Its called Nyonya Cooking you should check her out!
Yessss!!!!!new videooooo .so excited for this video
Setiap org punya citarasa berbeza,..hmm garlic?🤷🏻♀️
Happy you at least got two different varieties, most durian reviews only get the gross frozen version from the grocery store, that has probably been in that freezer for like a year or more... Best place to order durian is yearofthedurian, they have a bunch of varieties and it's frozen fresh picked, but you have to order like 20 packets at a time (they ship you a box). If you eat a lot of it it's worth it, you can keep it frozen and thaw one packet at a time.
This is my take on describing the taste of Durian: When a mango and a cantaloupe made a baby after eating aglio oglio at the Olive Garden for a month.
Wow baby number 2...on the way, congratulations.Take care guys.
They should try another food that have durian ingredients! Like cakes, crepe, ice cream, tempoyak, & especially ikan patin masak tempoyak🤩.
Evan is hilarious. Love that your friends were good sport to try it out. It is an acquired taste. Zae zae was great! I’ll buy him durian when you visit Malaysia.
Awww, thank you so much. I’ll take you up on that offer when we come back 😅❤️
Hahahha first time i heard people said durian like garlic🤣 normally like fart😂
Aku selalu gelak senyum2 je tengok reaksi mat salle bila jumpa durian...nak buat macam mana lain tempat lain kesukaan😁😁😁
Durian smells like heaven to me. I would slather that shiz on me if I could. Also having musang king be your first durian experience is like eating beef for the first time and having A5 miyazaki wagyu....
Because of this video, I stopped by to buy durians on my way back home from work just now.
Thanks Kumar. Have a great day & stay safe!
Thats so awesome bro. I'm a little jealous that you have access to fresh durians. haha. You stay safe too ya 😀
@@KumaarFamily cheaper fresh durian...😂😂😂. We had durian kawin & kampung, not Musang King
Well one thing about durians is that you'll either love it or hate it. There's no middle ground there.
just like blue cheese, taste yaki to many Asian😜
I think ur friend in grey shirt gave the best taste desriptions for all 3 kinds of durians and I like how he developed & changed his perceptions of how those durians smelled & tasted like each time he tried a new kind of durian. 👏👏👏
Eating durians and other Malaysian fruits are like having adventures, a journey. 🥳
There are so many different fruits and delicious foods available in our country so we won’t get bored with eating the same foods/fruits throughout the year and we get to keep exploring and eating them as the season changes. Some Malaysian fruits are easy to handle, some require a bit of work, while some are just overwhelming (at first). 😁
Eating Malaysian fruits are like having adventures, and adventures are fun. I’ve said this twice now. It sparks conversation, brings people closer together, keeping joy and enjoying our lives every now and then. 😁
I think a better way to describe the taste is like a caramelized sautéed onions and garlic with some slightly overripe mangoes and bananas mushed together and turned into a custard-y fruit dessert! 😂😂😂
But for the experts, they all taste like durians because any good durians are just very good durians! Wait till you get to crave on durians so much that when you had that first bite of a really good durian for a long time, the taste feels so good that your eyes turned white and become ‘high-on-durian’ LOL. I hope that sounds right cuz it happened to me. 😅😂😝
at first ur friends white shirts i tought is mohd salah (liverpool player) ...hahahahhaa
Hahaha! Now that you've said it, I can see some resemblance.
Just saw the vids Kumar Famly. Can't stop watching the video runs that you and family made.
Kalau dekat Sabah. Untuk sejukkan badan atau overheating ketika makan durian. Kami letak air minum dalam kulit dalam durian itu dan minum air tersebut. Banyak membantu untuk kurangkan heatiness.
👏👏👏
How can people typically say Durian tastes like a Garlic? Trust me, I love them both, and they don't taste the same
Maybe for someone try for the first time the impact might be the same.
Klu American dah start suka durian,
Prepare untuk ekport.
Jom tanam durian.
If the man can't eat the durian, could someone please find them rambutan, manggis, belunu, tarap any fruit for them to eat.
Yeah another exotic fruitss
I want to share rambutan with them too!
@@huwaida01 haha
@@KumaarFamily you should bro. Would love to see their reaction 😂
@@KumaarFamily rambutan should be good!
I dont like it at first too, but when You tried it? You will look for the taste of a durian more than the smell.
Kumar, plant some durians tree there and you'll be a legend!🤭
Pokok mati nanti. Soil & weather tak sesuai.
Boleh try.. soil import tropika. Hmmm nti muncul genetik baru..
Durian Kumar.

The weather here will be very difficult to grow it bro.
Suggest cook it with coconut milk (santan), put sugar and pandan leave, eat with a bread....they gonna love it
Guys, just imagine all those processed food you've been eating with all those preservatives compared to a fruit.
So proud of you giving Americans try Malaysia Food
They put whole durian in net in a fridge? 🤔
Yes they do. Weird, but I think that is how they import it.
Great video. Had fun watching . Lots of love. From Malaysia
I don’t really like musang king i prefer the red prawn i like sweeter kind
Red prawn has bitter-sweet taste. Strong taste, guess the Americans will think it’s the worst.
comelnya anak awak..confirm dia bijak..sebab kawin mixed ni automatically anak akan bijak sebijaknya..
Please don’t like the durians! It is super expensive already! We can keep all the durians in Asia and enjoy the king of fruit ourselves!
Oh please keep them!
Agree with u
Yea,y’all can keep that nasty ass fruit

Yeah, this prove a point, its either you love it or hate it when come ro durian
Seeing how people usually describe Durian tastes like garlic, it makes me wonder how does the garlic taste outside of Malaysia 🤣... I am the type of person who eat durian but not actually enjoy it that much... But I never think of durian tastes similar to garlic or onion... 😂 however I can see the relation to mango or socks cuz some durian do smell so bad 🤧... The reason I don't enjoy durian because it has strong smell...
No Offense But idk why people say its one of the smelliest fruits but its pretty decent And my eyes never water eating durian its sweet and not my jam pretty good
Don't drink alcohol after eat durian 👌👌👌👌
I love the way you provide Bahasa Malaysia subtitles 👍👍
it's helpful for people in Malaysia/Indonesia/Brunei and other countries as well👍👍
does it taste like garlic lol?? i hate garlic because garlic doesn't taste like durian...
exactly right? lol... i think it's not fresh hahaha
In my opinion, durian is the most popular food in Indonesia, because durian in Indonesia is only available in December - January. actually it smells very thick but tastes really good, there are three kinds of durian flavors: sweet, bitter, tasteless. I prefer sweet. I hope people don't think of durian as a disgusting food, but a very good food
