Thank you for this: I am SO ENCOURAGED to see a beautiful woman of my size completing these exercises. As I watched, I became teary, knowing I could NEVER do this! My actual first thought was, "Oh, that poor woman!" because I actually felt pain in my knees *just watching!* This makes me wonder, "Could this ever be me???" The contortions of my getting up from the toilet would almost be comedic if not so sad and torturous. There is no excuse for me NOT to try these, and today starts my journey.

Interesting. Gives me an idea to try. My knees aren't the problem, but this looks like it might be good for a recalcitrant hip, too. Some serious power-lifters swear by "box squats" which in principle are very much like your second exercise. I keep looking for ways to hit the posterior chain without causing a flareup. And for the holy grail: a good low-impact hill-sprint substitute to work on VO2 max.

3 years ago I was fit and healthy (then 66), with just some slight hints that my knees were wearing. Then in 6 months I went from there to being on crutches and having zero strength in my legs - at one point I couldn't get off a chair at all. At that point I was diagnosed with severe rheumatic polymialgia and when the high-dosage immunosuppressants I was put on started to take effect I found that my calf muscles particularly had wasted away to almost nothing - just hanging skin. This exacerbated the knee issues badly and after an MRI the doctors are now talking about knee replacement. I have managed to build the calfs and thighs with an excercise bike and some days I can climb stairs ok, other days are less easy. Down stairs are still a struggle.
However I still find the back of the knees are weak and the muscles repeatedly failed until about 9 months ago and still sometimes feel as if they are about to. I still can't stand up without arm help and none of the exercises I've been trying seem to be improving matters.
I'll try these three but do you have any other suggestions for speeding up the recovery? I fear having an operation without being stronger than I am currently, and as a previously keen walker I want to be able to at least walk the country trails even if I can't get back to the mountains.

I've been doing the fast stand up & slow controlled sit down for less than a week, just randomly. I can't believe how quickly it has worked! I'm late sixties didn't really think muscle would grow that quick. Thank God it does. I'm not sure what "squeezing the hips" means in this video. It's not the glutes, some other muscle? thanks Alyssa.
