For recip aircraft engines a 1/4" SAE 12 point set is not really an option but an absolute must. My SO set has been great for over 25 years. I wanted a metric set but not expensive, but after much deliberation I bought those from SO too. I didn't want to be disappointed after having used the best available for years. My 3/8" drive SAE and metric by Power Torque have never been used. Both of those sets together cost less than each of my 1/4" SO swivel sockets, but my main need is the smallness of the 1/4" swivels. Worth every penny!
Why are 12 points a must and not 6 point if you put it on a ratchet? I’m also an aircraft mechanic and am looking at buying some but I don’t see why 12 points are necessary
I got a used universal socket that the guy had put an o ring on the joint and it works incredibly well. The sunex 3/8 impact set is great. I’ve used them daily for at least 5 years. Those gearwench chromes are nice too although I don’t use them all that much. Btw when I switched my 350 to vortec heads it was much easier going back together because the intake bolts go straight down
I’ve got the 1/4 Gearwrench chrome set and the Expert (Mac) 3/8 impact. I have a 1/4 and 1/2 universal adapter, but I don’t care for them. They take up too much space that causes them to be almost useless for me. I’d rather use the socket so I can get more torque and use less space. I don’t use 12 point except for drive lines, but I use the drive line sockets for those (universal extensions). Since you mentioned it, there are times I only need a little bit of an angle. I prefer to use my wobble extensions in those cases. It gives me a little angle and doesn’t take up as much as a swivel or adapter.
Thanks for doing the video brother and going over the pros and cons I think a lot of people appreciate your knowledge. I hope your kid doing well through all this pandemic
Hello Tony good post, I have the same astro set, it works very well, I do have a 1/4 drive 5/16 and 3/8 snap-on chrome that are the best looking sockets I've ever seen, I bought about 5 years ago performance tool 3/8 chrome both metric and sae flex socked sets they work great and less expensive, in impacts I spent to much but I don't regret it I have snap-on in 1/4 and 3/8 sets the 3/8 metric in twelve point, my only complain is that the 3/8 drive look like a 1/2 drive sockets, their large in diameter, makes the small sizes hard to fit in a tight spot, I bought a grearwrench 3/8 impact set but it was the small set that didn't include the flex sockets, after the fact I wish I had bought the larger set so I did buy a second set, a make called " Tight spot" by Jager tools it's a very nice set I couldn't be happier with them
I swear in one of these videos, some creator mentioned that the shallower fit, universal sockets, sometimes don’t fit all the way onto the head of the fastener. But I haven’t been able to find that video again.
i love my astro nano's,they are great for getting bolt's and i use mine on caliper bolt's especially rear caliper bolt's but they do have a draw back that is you really use them on nut's if the bolt thread is sticking out of the nut.
Hello again Tony Thank you for another Great Video I usually don't get a choice as an Aircraft Mechanic. We see mostly twelve point hardware, however we do have some Six point hardware and all of it is SAE/Standard. Again thank you
@@TonyTheTechnician Thank you for the quick response. Yeah, it does help to only need certain tools. Don't get me wrong, it's a lot in the end. It's just SAE/Standard. I have learned a lot from watching TH-cam videos. And watching you work on the Camaro. Thank you again
Great video as always. I just bought my first universal socket sets this year. I got the 1/4 inch capri that I think are awesome. I needed a larger size while I was working on my Jeep, so I ran to Auto Zone and got a 3/8 Duralast set. They are so so. They flop around a little too much. The last time I used them I had to wrap a little electrical tape around it to stop it from flopping around so much. I definitely need a 3/8 upgrade eventually. My impact universal are HF. They get the job done, but they aren't made too well.
Very nice glad you are enjoying them and ya sometimes that style and cheaper ones will become loose. You did the best thing possible by just using Electrical tape.
Another way to fix a floppy chrome universal socket is put a dab of blue thread locker in the joint areas.Let the thread locker dry overnight and will be stiff at first. The chrome universal sockets can't be too tall in certain areas to get in.l have the mid and deep impact universal sockets in 3/8 drive both Grey Pnuematic sets with no complaints at all.Grey Pnuematic even has a 1/4 drive deepwell impact universal socket set in metric l have also
Grey Pnuematic and Sunex are two great alternatives to the tool truck brands.l have the chrome universal sockets too in 1/4 drive. Two are the Gearwrench set,the 3/8 and 10mm taller in the sets.Have some Snap On impact universal sockets l bought used and the Matco pinless impact universal sockets as well.
Bro I have that same chrome Astro 1/4 inch and for the price it’s a STEAL like you said you rarely need it but when you do it’s great and again compared to more expensive brands you cannot pass this up

Thank you I really appreciate that. And he is doing great. Getting big for sure
I love that Astro 1/4" set. It's really my go-to 1/4 set.
And I think I've mentioned before, but I (DIYer) use Tekton or Neiko adapters with the Astro Nano. It's a great combo.
Very nice and ya that is a great combo. Thanks for sharing

Very nice and yq some of those sets can be bulky making them hard to use in some situations. Glad you found some sets you enjoy though 👍
Good review. Hf has some good universal impact sockets. Starting to see more 12 point. 1/4 drive needed for front wheel drive.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and thanks for watching

Hey Tony totally off video topic but you going to be at the stl, NHRA race? If so I may get to see you on Sunday! Keep up the great videos!!
Hello again Tony
Thank you for another Great Video

Are Sae sockets necessary In the mechanic world?
Yes for any professional mechanic you will need sae
Thank you for great video
Astro is highly underrated and ATD
