Hi there, I have only just seen your TH-cam. I owned that 850 from 1999 to 2019 and it still is the most beautiful and fantastic car. There were only 20 in Glacier Blue, it always looks current and not like many old cars that really do look old. I loved it and always had it looked after at a specialist 8 series garage. Some five years ago I moved some 300 miles from them and now I am in my late 70s and doing less than 500 miles a year and as you say, I started to give up on the maintenance. I don’t know what happened to the petrol flap or the BMW badge, they were intact when it went. I put the V12 badges on the car, the ones on the side are from Mercedes the one on the boot is BMW. It seems that BMW were going to put V12 on the 8 series but never got round to it. I still have the original 16 inch wheels, I bought the throwing star wheels on eBay when getting 16 inch tyres became difficult to get some years ago. I think you are doing an incredible job and I look forward to seeing the finished restoration. Thank you very much for looking after ‘my’ car, she really does deserve it.

Hi Alan, so great to hear from you and thanks for commenting! Amazing that you owned it for 20 years, you must have had some attachment to it, i'd say it was hard to let go! I hope I do you and the car proud by getting it in tip top shape. If you have any more little stories, feel free to leave a few comments here and there. Who knows, I may even drive over to you when she's done. :)

@@stevesbmwbarn5706 Hi Steve, thank you for your reply. Yes I was very sad to see her go. However, finances depleting and not running her enough was not good for her. The problem with the headlight raising I think you will find is more to do with the relays needing cleaning or changing. I would unplug them and re-seat them every so often. The cause of the wipers slowing down was through lack of use which WD40 failed to help. I believe there should be the invoice showing the recon replacement gearbox and most of the other replaced items. The exhaust is mainly stainless steel. Most of the real specialist work was done by a couple of enthusiast 8 series guys based near Gatwick. As I said, I do still have the original 16inch M Tech wheels, you will see one of them is actually the spare still in the car, I could only get 4 throwing stars. By the way, be sure to take note of the way round they are fitted, they only help cool the brakes when fitted correctly. Not many owners of them actually know that. I do miss her and seeing her come off the lorry I relived my first sighting of her and how much of a real super car she still looks. My email is thealanjones@hotmail.com please contact me with your location etc. as I am sure I will think of more info for you. Thanks again, Alan.

Like someone said already in the comments, this is like an Irish version of M539 restorations, which is great. Not afraid to tackle any job. 👍 Best of luck.

Very nice video, and kudos for saving that car. As an 8 owner, Id recommend anyone looking to end up with a car that has good finish, to buy one thats already there. To restore a car with rust on almost any panel is going to be painful, in addition to all the other stuff you will have to deal with. It will add up to... a lot.

Owned an 850i and currently drive an 840ci. (1): ALWAYS jump the car from the " Red Plus Sign" terminal in the engine bay- never at one of the two batteries in the trunk.(2) Be very careful with plastic cosmetics - many no longer made. (3) You can add a single in dash cd with bluetooth using the BMW CD 43 Business CD Player - it is a direct plug and play to the original harness if it's still intact. (4) Start watch "Timm's e31 Repair"
on TH-cam from England. Good luck. Be patient and be rich - you'll need both.

hi steve , great to see another one is being saved , i own two 8 series and an e38 750 and do my own repairs etc , one word of advice is be a little more carefull with any bmw plastic
(@11.01 seconds) as it is very fragile and some parts are no longer available . if you need your gen module re capped please get in touch . it can cause battery drain and odd light errors wiper function and boot open errors . good luck

Hi Steve, congrats with your great and clearly explained videos and repairs. After following you all the way up to ep. 8, i wonder why you didn't replace the oil-seals of the valve stems. I'm about to replace all neccesary seals because of some oil-leaks located around the valvecovers on my '92 E31 850i which wears a great looking Alpinweiss body ;-)
