I have been watching the past several episodes without subscribing. But, I couldn't help but subscribing seeing all the hard works of scrubbing rusts and dirts out. I can't wait to see the old car getting its glory back.
Sorry Buddy - the A/C dryer flask is a must to change at some point - they say After system flushed - so up to you - I looked at my filthy A/C compressor for ages, (Timing Tensioner was leaking oil onto it) till last week when I decided, it had to come off to clean behind it - so did that and painted my a/c pipes in situe (nose cone is off) then I found that connection mentioned below. My goalposts have changed somewhat BUT gearbox rear seal is dodgy = has to be sorted = best way for me is drop the engine and box down = can then detair engine bay and replace drivers front brake pipe Easily! You may need a tent in the garden for the rest off your parts, stick in though ; ) Go brave Sir - I have a spare set of new Eibach lowering spring - dont reccomend that route though - am gonna ebbay them
Thanks the input, I have a new compressor already, and a new condenser and dryer too. Good luck with your project, getting the time to get near it is the hard part!
My hat is off to you! I watch a few channels that have taken apart European cars. They are all in these fancy garages with lifts, heavy power and pneumatic tools, every specialty tool you can think of. You are doing just as good as a mechanical and TH-cam production job as them. Keep the good work up!
No mean feat undoing all of ( I did start once) that. You, and the guy in Germany may have instilled in me the courage to tackle mine again, but next year not right now. Following your progress, and keen to see it reassembled.
Excellent videos and commentary. Someone may have said this elsewhere but for gasket metal surfaces to prevent scoring or damage to the highly finished surfaces never use a metal scraper, screwdriver etc. use cheap and disposable plastic scrapers to clean these surfaces. Will not deface or deform the metal surfaces.
The M70 used M40 (4 cylinder 87-94) rockers etc - they were designed together and made on the same machine tools. The trick on the M40 is to remove the oil spray bar and open up the oil holes slightly to increase oil flow. A common mistake with the banjo bolts (also on the M10 and M30 engines) is to use liquid threadlock - all that does is end up inside the the banjo bolt, congeal and block the oil hole. BMW sell new ones that have both a slightly different thread pitch and dried threadlock. Nip these to 12 nm and they are there for life.
Loving the series, a wealth of mechanical knowledge and professionalism. Great stuff! 👍🏼 (P.S. just came from M539 Restoration, I think I’m addicted to this car now 😂, definitely encouraging me to buy a project car during these lockdowns) - SUBSCRIBED
Thank you to you and the guy in Germany for giving me the courage and knowledge to tackle this on my own. I have a 850i manual that is in a very bad way...going to follow all your episodes step for step ;)
A/C pipes have an itermediate connecttion - a single allen bolt just where they pass driver side shock tower. Just removed my pipes there last week, one leads to Compressor and other to A/C Dryer in front of drivers side wheel. Spent ages sanding those pipes untill I found the connection! Made painting them so much easier. Also there's a wee sight glass on top of that too. part of refill procedure, am far from that and studying R12 to R134a gas etc etc compatibility. P.S Hamerite Kurust works well on various rusty bits after sanding, kills the stuff left in the pitting. Ideal for around the oring grooves and can be directly painted over after a light scuff for a key an the other areas. Hope you don't mind my interjection Sir, just helped me reading comments in the past to find tricks! Hope you have a few for me in the process as my engine is comming out soon, downwards with the gearbox - of course having loosened Torque converter bolts first. Enjoy the E31 one vehicle worth sorting out.
Great stuff again Steve. Those UK roads really do a job on the underside of the body! Will be interested to see how the nuts and bolts come off on the suspension if you're working on it!
I like your intros, reminds me of Top Gear and Fifth Gear shows. Thank you for showing close-up the Banjo-Bolts and their location etc. I had no idea the M70 was plagued with this issue it shares with the M30 banjo bolts coming loose. Ever do the upper oil pan gasket?
Why didn't you remove the engine completely and put it on an engine stand? I'm just thinking that to clean up that engine bay and get to all those bits would be difficult. It's a massive job and difficult to know what level to complete as a restoration I would imagine. Stripping the car down would be my choice including ripping out all the interior. What level of restoration are you aiming for?
Awesome and exciting video . Can't wait for more videos. Thank you. Just curious why ignition leads from Japan and not Germany :) Be safe and God Bless from South Africa.
Thanks for watching! Nearly all my parts are coming from BMW, but they only sell the leads as complete harnesses. Approx €1000 for both sides. I'm picking up high quality specialist leads from a Japanese maker, about €200.
11:00 the oil pipe supplies oil to the cam bearings, not so much the lobes. Best to have a look inside under the bearing caps. Have read of this: www.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?1422402-Clicking-noise-on-engine-idle-(video-attached)
The intro's are also not from m539. M539 also copied them from another channel called: Bad Obesssion Motorsport... . Loving them, m539, and this channel...
Thank you for creating a car channel for grown ups. You and M539 restorations are my personal favourites now!

I'm the same way. These to guys make me wanna get back to the garage. (Are you talking about M539 Restorations?)

Ah ok that makes total sense then. Good luck with rest of your work . Looking forward. God Bless
Did you replace the timing chain guide as well?
Can you split the vids to 20 mins each...it makes them more exciting. It'll increase your exposure x10
