      It's one of those critical skills not practiced, which makes AAR so difficult. In real life, you won't go to a tanker until you're proficient in formation flying, which is a rarely used skill in DCS, unless you're getting into organised or group play online.

    1:22 Just as a note you don't have to use the DCS switch to select the right entry. You can just type 1 4 into the scratchpad and it'll work out that it's a TACAN channel and set it.
    2:45 Similarly you don't have to modify a preset you can just type the frequency you want into the scratchpad and it'll set the radio to that frequency. You also don't have to enter 2 5 1 0 0 using 2 5 1 works just fine

    • @delayed_control
      @delayed_control 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In fact it should be impossible to access those fields with DCS, only command steering (for mode selection) scratchpad and azimuth should be accessible. Band should be only changeable by entering 0 into scratchpad. The fact that they can be accessed directly bypassing the scratchpad is either a bug or omission.

    The most important part of AAR is the attitude. You gotta go in there relaxed, not white knuckle. After all you just gonna fly straight and level for a while. Make it boring. Play musak in your head. "Girl from Ipanema" elevator music does it for me. For those that don't know the tune, it's the elevator music from the Blues Brothers.

    One question: Is ALT HOLD inadvisable?

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  ปีที่แล้ว

      ALT HOLD or any form of autopilot is a bad idea, it'll mess with your inputs, and then disengage when you try to push through it to adjust, resulting in you potentially pitching quite hard and suddenly.
      Once you're in formation, keep it manual.

    Can you explain a bit how you trim correctly? Can"t seem to get her trimmed correctly with a tpod or assymetric load on my aircraft. If i trim i always bank to much to 1 side or the other.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the same as every other aircraft, just gently tap the trim repeatedly to correct any un-commanded roll/pitch. If you can't get it quite right, get it close enough that the drift is slow and manageable. You can see the trim levels in the bottom left panels in the corner of the cockpit.

    Redkite Thanks a lot for this tutorial. Aerial refueling is one of my favorite mission. Glad to have your very detailed tutorial as a guide. Which would you say is more difficult, drogue basket or the boom method?

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the Boom is my favourite, Faster fuel transfer, director lights and no basket to chase after. But, the Basket is more forgiving once you're connected and is probably the safer option as you're not flying under another aircraft.

      Thanks for your insight. I have nailed the basket method to perfection on a straight flying tanker in the Hornet. Never successful with the boom method. I will be looking forward to the new challenge.

      I love the boom! (A-10c aside, as it's a little odd doing nose boom) Boom lets you concentrate on the flying without the distraction of catching the basket.

    "Avoid prolonged sessions" - yes. I found practicing every or most days best, but only for about 10 minutes, and once I started getting murderous I stopped. After about a week I was there, although doing it in a turn with turbulence took longer.

    I noticed a bug with the TACAN if plug in TACAN 14Y AA T/R, i can only get direction to the tanker. But if go with 14X AA T/R it works as it suppose to. I have double checked the redkite mission in the editor and its 14Y!

      That happens with the Hornet as well, I think Y only transmits location not distance, however I could be wrong that's just my observations.

    • @RedKiteRender
      @RedKiteRender  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tacan logic was changed a while back with the introduction of Datalink on the hornet, I'm not totally sure what's happening, Y is usually only operated by airborne stations and X for ground based. I don't think they should be broadcasting on both bands. It's not uncommon for airborne tacan to only give range information as they have smaller transmitters than ground stations.

    • @JSpidey
      @JSpidey 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RedKiteRender My experience with Y tacans is they'll display their location but not distance so I'd have to lock whatever it is up (tanker) for more information.
