For plot its better to play PoE 1 first. There are some spoilers if you play them in reverse. For me personally, I don't care about spoilers, so it wouldn't matter to me. Pillars 2 has the stronger tactical system, so that is the game I want to talk about.

I downloaded the games again and will do a new run for POE 1 and 2. It was ages since I played.
However I have been thinking in the past few days since first watching this video, of why I like BG3 so much. While I agree with you about story and setting, for me I think it is the incredible systems in BG3, both in and out of combat. One example of this is the throwing mechanic. In many games you can use throwing weapons in combat, but in BG3 they built a whole system where you can throw lots of other things using the same mechanic, like potions. Potions also create a cloud when broken. You can then use this system in so many ways in combat, creating tactical depth. This is especially true when playing solo, where you really need to use all these tactics to make it. Anyway I look forward to some POE1 and 2 runs. I just need to remember how it worked :)

Somehow the combination of the 1st and 2nd game would be the perfect crpg for me.
I do not really like the unlimited use of spells per rest, the overpowered foods per rest, five men party in Deadfire. Also I missing mega dungeons like Endless Path of Od Nua.
At same time exploration, unique weapon enhancements are great. Also the expansions really add everything, lot of lore and arena combats, not to mention challenging mega bosses.

Regarding difficulty, the main thing to mention is that the difficulty scales poorly ie. the game is much easier as you level. I liked Deadfire to a degree (and without a doubt a lot more than the first POE, which was straightup disappointing for me), but i can't really agree with the sentiment of it having the best combat in the genre.
Regardless of taking as reference its original RTWP version or its turn-based variation added later, they have a list of shortcomings too extensive to claim that tile.
I DO think they used to have the prettiest production value in the genre before BG3 came a thing, though. Some of the scenarios were stunning. Oh, and their multiclass system is among the best I've ever seen on a computer game of this genre. Definitely better than Pathfinder and D&D with their "piecemeal" mess.
I'm also not exceedingly in love with the setting, if I have to be completely honest. They tried so hard to "move away from some fantasy stereotypes" only to replace them with not-particularly-better ones.
P.S. I'll gladly watch more Deadfire/POE content if you decide to make it, anyway. I'm not complaining and I'm not saying I'm not interested.

From that, you can say the performance is objectively better. You can't say the game is objectively better because there are loads of other factors, many of which will not be objective.
How can BG3 be objectively better when the gameplay - the most important factor for many people - is fundamentally different? You can't argue that either gameplay system is objectively better since it will come down to individual preferences. You could argue that one system is objectively more tactical, but whether or not that's a good thing is an opinion. Some people prefer less tactical gameplay.

deadfire fails in very strange places for an obsidian game. Like main quest and artwork. Also writing quality seems to have dropped compared to the first game.

@xaress Hard disagree. Neither were failures. The main plot was maybe a tad weaker than usual, but still good.

@@Aestus_RPG If I'm not mistaken they had to add new scenes with later editions to explain the main plot to players. Also the ending was incredibly anticlimactic.
Sea combat is another problem. Later they added the option to directly board the enemy ship which is a good option to skip the sea combat.
Look, I like the game. There are great upgrades compared to the first game but it had some strange problems. It seems we won't even get a third one. Pity, classes and some of the worldbuilding were pretty great. With their own system they could just continue however they like; unlike Owlcat and Pathfinder editions.

I played the game, and while I like and enjoy it, there is WAY too much reading, the size of the texts just adds salt to injury. My eyes literally got sore from reading in this game. And this coming from a big 38 yrs old RPG fan, my eyes just can't handle that anymore.
Larian fine tunes this just right. Huge amount of content, but not overload the players with wall of texts.

I think you must be thinking of Pillars 1. Deadfire is very manageable with its text. That said, I prefer lots of text.

@@Aestus_RPG I played both, and yes the first one was pretty much a reading simulator/rpg game. Don't get me wrong I like them. It's also my OCD to blame cuz I have to read everything, and my eyes just can't handle it anymore, too old for this shit lol

On the other hand RPGs with fully voiced dialogue are insufferable with all of their voice acting. Reading is always faster than hearing and that is a golden rule. This gets specially true when the VA isn't good. Hearing the same six voices in New Vegas is funny at first, but by the end it is a burden to hear.
Now PoE is an example of WAAAY too much text and info dump. They went too far with the describe-every-single-thing-with-words apprach that you see in books, used to great success in Planescape Torment. But that game was the exception. Videogames shouldn't be books, and it isn't surprising that it didn't work out in PoE. Unless you are a huge fan of the setting, it will be a pain for your eyes and mind. It was to me and I'm relatively young lmao

The phrase "Death of God" isn't literal like that. Its a just a metaphor from the writing of Nietzsche. In his view Enlightenment philosophy "killed" God by overthrowing the old consensus of philosophy with a new one in which, he thought, God could no longer be rationally accepted. This created a BIG problem as far as he was concerned, and he wanted to solve that problem.
However, that was just a point in history. The belief in God - called theism by philosophers - is still very much alive, and remains popular and well respected among academic philosophers of religion today.

POE (the first one) was simply awful. i couldn't even bring myself to finish it once. It was absolutely boring and the attribute system was ridiculous and impenetrable. If POE 2 was completely revamped from '1', fair enough, but I was so disappointed by one, I never had any interest in a follow-up. I was really looking forward to one as well (before its release).

To be honest aka NGL, I dislike BG3 just for this reason. What I really love is theory crafting the characters (most), kitting out, leveling and questing. BG3 is also super woke to point of disrupting my enjoyment when everyone is super gay but I can overlook that if the above is superbly sweet. Problem is 5E is shallow in this regard. I got bored early on and Act2 beginning is usually where I call it quits. Larian will become even more woke in their next game no doubt. Animal sex, alien sex, everyone is super duper liberace style gay etc. I am not looking forward to it at all. Now why in the world are developers not funding Jsawyer is beyond me. Give that man millions and you will have the most highly sought out gem of a game. Less than 2 years for FNV masterpiece. Just imagine if FNV had 5 yrs to simmer.....and not be on a junk garbage BGS engine....a man can dream!

yo man, in my gpu gaming menu I override the filtering with all the highest settings for this game and it removes all the shimmer and artifacts with the lighting and really felt like it 'fixed" any lack in the graphics in spots. I usually don't mess with these settings but I do for CRPG games from how there is a ton of textures on the screen. the super sampling , and all the AA stuff maxed out in control panel and a reboot will blow minds people.
