    Correction to the video. The flaps must be opened in sequence also.

      That kind of rule mistake can easily ruin a game like this, make the experience less tense.

    The "You crash and die" stuff got me laughing. I love no communication stuff like the Mind, but I;m not as sure about the turns in this one.

  • @3MBG

    Occasionally there is a very popular game that I 100% do not get or understand. The last time was the Mind and here we are again with Sky Team, and experience i found incredibly dull and predictable in every way, and utterly lacking in any kind of tension. Yet it is beloved and many write about it being incredibly tense and exciting. All i can think is that silence does something to other people it doesn't to me, or to Steph for that matter who I played the game with. Both of us played the game in silence, landed or crashed the plane, and it didn't matter. We were just placing dice in obvious ways. Don't put too high or low a number on the wings, try to clear the planes ahead, don't drop too fast, and then clear flaps and landing gear when you can. I just don't see any actual decisions here, and without any real decision making, it just a rote process in silence.
    It has to be the silence, some kind of psychological effect in other people we just don't connect with for some reason. Because we both think this is the worst game we have played this year, by some margin.

      As much as I enjoy playing The Mind and Sky Team, I can understand where you're coming from.
      You know what's even worse?
      I've played this game with a person that made me realize, he can totally cheat, illegally manipulating his dice behind the shield without me knowing, just so he can end the game quickly.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Geez that's terrible. I've heard people say this is the biggest issue with roll for the galaxy, but thats a competitive game so cheating seems more.... common. Cheating in a co-op is an odd choice.

      I had fun with Sky Team (I only played it twice) but I can see there not being many decisions. It seemed like a nice wind-down game for an evening when you don't want too much stress. I went to check out Assembly and it's already on my want to play list 😆
      The Mind feels very different to me (it definitely gets tense and exciting for me) but it's also one of my favorite games. I really like limited communication, cooperative, and real-time games though, and The Mind has all of those.

      My wife and I played it on BGA and felt exactly the same way. It was super hyped online and by some friends of ours, but we just found it to be kinda boring and straightforward. Not our style I guess.
      We love The Mind though 😅

      @@wicaksonoadi1035 What I love about this game is that the dice are hidden and you are not allowed to communicate your info. That is what makes it stick out from other coops games that even says, play with open hands. Cause with open hands and all player know all things, then it don't feel like I am playing my character and or people will tend to try and alpha the game, So in coops I prefer to play with personal hands/info hidden (but in some game that makes it insanly harder) and we might only be allowed to hint at what we want other people to do or what I can do etc... I only want characters to be able to communicate within given game mechanics for communications, like beeing on the same tile etc or having coms or what ever like making it cost action points... Anywhoo I digress. =P
      But yes... In this game it opens up for cheating. But I don't understand that, since then where lies the challange and the feeling of success?

    It's weird that some people say there's no tension, I play this game a lot with my wife and we are both very tensed every time!
    After each loss, we discuss which die we should have placed where and especially when to send the right signal to the partner. We usually dislike restricted communication games, but one might say the game LANDS well with us XD

    The funny part is that the silence part is actually part of flying airplanes. It’s super odd playing this as a pilot. Your training beats into you to verbalize what you’d just do without talking, especially when things become routine.

    • @bootstheory
      @bootstheory 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      This is one reason I really disliked the game! Not having any pilot training, but being a little hyperfocused on air crash TV shows, the importance of communication and teamwork feels completely opposite to the gameplay.

    I do agree that the base mode is on rails. There are a lot more modules to add and it brings much more variability and a lot more tension. It can basically mean you can't make as much coffee, but prioritization does become far more important.

    My wife & I enjoyed this game. I think maybe since you play a lot of games the decisions were pretty obvious for you & your partner. My wife on the other hand doesn’t play many games, the tension for us came in her giving something I enjoy a go & trying to figure out the dice & the challenge for me was to try to anticipate what a “non-gamer” would do so I can compensate 😂

    I enjoyed playing it, and enjoyed the innovation of a game very much designed for two people. Yes I also don't like restrictions on communication, mainly as ours is a sociable hobby, so restricting communication doesn't feel natural or good.
    FWIW I did feel genuine tension building towards the landing

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I disagree. The extent of the pre-round talk was. "there are 3 planes in our way, best remove them". And that's not having a strategy, that's just stating the obvious, if those planes are not removed, you crash and die. That was our experience with it. You literally have a checklist you need to land the plane, its not hard to figure out, after your 2 mandatory moves you must make each round, how to use your other two dice.

    • @arkady7685
      @arkady7685 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@3MBG but sometimes agreeing on something obvious is good and feels good when you play with your spouse XD
      Jokes aside, in the discussion you can also talk about the values; e.g., since we haven't advances on that track which needs a low value, if I can I will give a lot value there so you can balance it with your higher dice values etc.
      With the many modules, there is a lot in the check-list, and you can easily get stuck without pre-planning where you'll place low and high values. Anyhow that's our experience with the game. Maybe we have a higher tolerance for games with less hard decision making!

      Its the "play a turn" section, for that turn you cannot, until you start a new turn. It wasn't that it was easy, it was that it was silently going through a process. Look, i get it , we are the outliers here, but we found the core gameplay dull as dishwater.
