    Honestly I think it’s not named a second addition or any of that because of the designer Paul Dennon, and publisher dire wolf digital. They did this similar thing with Clank! Make one successful game, make a few expansions, then do Clank! In space, make a few expansions. Do a legacy game, do another version in Catacombs. Though the Clank! Variations felt like they made a bit more sense, it’s definitely the same format as we are seeing here. Just wait for the dune imperium legacy game that will come in a year or two.

    Spicier is definitely right. The decision space in Uprising is significantly richer with some huge combo potential with spies and increased card draw. Everything is just more cohesive and more involved. The simple change of making the Arrakis Liaison card Bene with card draw for friendship is so minor on paper but huge in practise. Likewise for making the new mentat space stronger but with Emperor friendship. Spies allow you to plan ahead and keep options open no matter what - another seemingly small change that somehow is hugely impactful. I don't feel as bad when someone jumps into a spot before me because if it was that important to me to go there, I should have planned ahead with a spy so it's my own damn fault.
    The cards too. Oh my. Even the 1 cost cards are tasty with deckbuilding being much stronger in this version.
    Yeah... could wax lyrical about this for a while!

    Many players complained that the sandworms are too swingy, since it's not impossible (or even uncommon) for one player to gain three or four points all at once using worms and end the game as early as turn seven.
    This did indeed happen in my first game, but not in any subsequent plays, because now we all know to pay attention to how much water everyone has and prepare for a big fight once the third stage conflicts show up.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

      This smacks of "i didnt take into account a new variable and got spanked". Our first game, the person who went hard on sandworms won. But as you point out, in subsequent plays we learned our lessons. Far too much "I played this once and its broken" mentality out there, both in reviewers and the general public.

      To be fair, the ENTIRE GAME is extremely swingy due to the event cards than people can hoard. Anyone who has four cards in their hand in this game basically also has a permanent mischievous smirk on their face, and for good reasons.

    • @QBG
      @QBG 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @mbrochh82 A player holding four Intrigue cards had also better be holding the Secrets space, and if they're doing that, it's blatantly obvious to the table that they're planning a big turn, and based on what resources they're holding, it's not hard to figure out what that plan is and block them.

I probably don't feel like i need to improve the game, so even if the new one is better I'm still happy enough with what I have. I owned Imperium and sold it after I got Uprising and while I personally prefer Uprising I had to rebuy the first one again as it would hit the table more often.
    Sometimes more complex and more intricate mechanics mean that the particular game is not as suitable for your player group any more. In my case Uprising was just too complex for 2 of the guys and so Iended up owning both. The fact that there are compatible helps a lot.

    Dune Imperium is one of my favorite games, and I've been loving Uprising too. Also, I played the new digital version of DI and that has gotten me back to playing the base game at the table without expansions, which has been fun to revisit and a nice way to introduce new players to the game. I'd like to try the Epic Mode from the Ix expansion more too. I'll probably still play DI a bit more than Uprising this year, but I'm guessing that balance will shift to mostly playing Uprising in the years to come.

    I feel like a Chad for pointing it out, apologies, anyone reading the rules should catch it themselves but
    :30 which looked like setup, 3 troops go in your garrison to start
    1:36 you say at step 3 & 5 but isn’t it 2 & 4 you get the vp and faction token respectively? When your cube enters the space with the yellow vp symbol you gain it so that is only the second move up a track, and only two more moves to get the faction token.
    2:14 somewhat got difficult to hear but the spy allows you to go to a occupied space as you said, but you can also recall a spy at a space you go to to draw a card, not sure if that was mentioned, apologies if so.

      Uprising is the game I wanted Dune Imperium to be, but it's not a replacement, especially if your group has varying tastes. I like the tighter, more balanced, conflict-focused design of Uprising, but some friends in my game group prefer the more open-ended "sandbox" experience of the original with expansions.
      I'm more than happy to play either, though. If you already own base Dune Imperium, Uprising isn't a necessity, but it's definitely worth it for someone else in your group to pick it up.

    I like that they didn't go down the Terraforming Mars expansion route which tried to just add to the base game expansion after expansion and never really fixed the fundamental problem of Terraforming Mars (that the play on the central map, which takes up a huge part of the play area, is not engaging and strategic uninteresting. We literally put our snacks there until we were in the last rounds where player start to lay down some tiles there).
    Revising Dune Imperium and adding new core mechanics to the "base" game was a very good decision I hope other games will do as well in the future. Now Dune is in a much better position to add new expansions and keeping the old ones compatible is especially nice for the people who already have them.

    • @3MBG
      @3MBG  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      I highly recommend you play terraforming mars with some other groups. Sounds like your group has settled into a lazy meta where everyone sits back and slowly builds big engines. If you played against a group that actively goes for the board, the game will likely end turns before your engine gets properly powered up. You're meta and your play style is just that.
      Its like hearing about games that get into double digit generations, that always makes me scratch my head. Gen 6 for 5 players and Gen 7 (8 at the latest) for 3-4 is normal for us.

    • @st0ox
      @st0ox 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@3MBG Yeah you could be right. But I really like my gaming group. So I generally try to find a game that fits them and not try to play a specific game and try to find the right gaming group for it. BUT there are engine builder games out there which give you more incentive to compete more actively for special locations like Brass Birmingham. In fact the bidding for special locations is a core mechanic in that game and in this game my gaming group plays much less lazy and everyone is checking what the others are doing. In terraforming mars you should keep up what engines the others are building if you want to win, but to check 20 cards in their play area isn't very compelling.
      So the common focus should naturally been placed on the central play area.
      What I am trying to say is that as a game Dev you cannot expect that the players will try to play ideal (to win the game as much as possible). The theme and the mechanics have to be engaging so that in the best case players will naturally develop the motivation to play as ideal as possible and develop more active and diverse play styles (and don't just focus on their own engine, for example).
      What Terraforming Mars could have done in one of their expansions is adding another core mechanic that makes the tile placing less of an adjacency point collection puzzle but more interconnected with the player's game engines. What I already like is that sometimes the requirement for a card is having to have at least 3 cities or the card will reap more benefits if you have more cities. But this is just a one way dependency and does not take into account where the cities are placed. Would be cool if you try to get points for connecting cities to an electrical grid and if other players have land tiles there you can pay them a lease to place a grid on those tiles. Stuff like this is what would my friends be more interested in doing more on the central board.
      I am not gonna lie, the last 3 rounds are getting interesting regarding the central board and everyone is starting to count their bonus points and is trying to optimize their last tile placements. But it feels like more of a point collection puzzle and less of a thematic involvement in tense real estate trading on a new planet.
