Why do so few Christians today understand that prophecy is not about prediction but about applying the word of God to the current situation.

Christians from the very beginning started in with the prophecy nonsense; it's nothing new.
@@Jacob-ed1bl if you read any good bible study (So exclude most modern American Christian "studies") the whole purpose of "The prophets" was to tell their contemporaries how they were failing their God, by matching "The word" to the behaviour. You are right about Christians hijscking "prophesy" often quoting verses out of context to apply to Christ which were originally meant to address issues facing the Jewish nation(s) at the time of the prophet.
This is the second theist caller I've seen in the last few weeks that actually answered the questions honestly. Maybe we're in the end times!

It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on Earth has ever produced the expression “ as pretty as an airport”. Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly.
I actually follow earthquakes on an app. The frequency of 6+ Richter scale events is quite steady. The only reason people think natural disasters have increased is due to the increase and speed of information transfer.
That and recency bias.
And more people living in places people hadn't lived before.
Like crime. Where i live the crime rate has dropped but when you listen to some people you feel like we live in a warzone compared to when they were younger. Numbers prove them wrong but every single thing is a headline now so people think it is worse than before.

There's also the simple fact of more widespread populations/settlements, greater population density within them, and the inflation of the value of human possessions.
200 years ago it would be nearly impossible for an earthquake to do over $1 million in damages even if it was in a big city, these days it would be nearly impossible for a decently powerful earthquake to do LESS damage than that. Take out a few decent sized houses and it has already eclipsed that total.
Combine that with the greater population density, and you'll have far higher costs, both in human life and financial damages even though the earthquakes themselves are staying at the same strength and frequency. A lot of people seem to forget that the world hasn't always existed as it is now, in so many ways.

The desperation for people to want the fantasy of the Bible to be true is really depressing. So many lives wasted and so many contributions missed spending time believing a god controls us and will allow us to live beyond death.

The true God does not control humans. He has provided guide lines for us to live by but does not force it on us the church does. It is not life beyond death that is a pagan idea. It is life by a resurrection from the dead. Do you know where you came from prior to conception? Our birth is proof in my world that the dead can be brought back to life. The bible is fantasy to people because they do not have God's spirit or a desire to know what it teaches.
Because of the incipient end times I have stopped paying my mortgage. My bank however does not share my faith.

No Carlton isn't, he may represent modern fundamentalists but they are a tiny minority of Christians through history. You may regard Origen, Aquinas or Bonheoffer as equally wrong but intellectually they are in a different class.

The caller actually answered Jim's questions and even listened when Jim and Matt spoke. Why can't more callers act like him, it was kinda refreshing.
How do these people function in the 21st century?
We lean on God, who has the entire world in his infinitely capable hands.
Most are older and are able to maximize benefits like social security and pensions from jobs of yesterday without having college educations. Something the later generations will not be able to do. Therefore as education becomes mandatory, critical thinking becomes more prolific, thankfully, and as a result do not "lean" as much on the idea of a skydaddy.
From modern technology that atheists and agnostics made for them and everyone else.
They depend on humans, science and technology but thank their gods for everything.
the 'end of times' has always happened since the 'beginning of times'. each time a person dies, is the 'end of times' for him/her. no need for any bible prophecy for that.
if you want to believe the bible jesus kinda suggested the end within the lifetime of his disciples... kinda missed out already by a few thousand years....

I live in coastal CA. I look out my front room window and see the Santa Cruz Mountains five miles distant. Between that mountain range and I lie the San Andreas Fault.
Why do these folks keep calling in year after year? Every time they make an argument it falls apart due to the application of logic, and no credible evidence.
Every time there is some armed conflict somewhere, some crisis or disaster somewhere you have all these people jumping up and down screeching their favorite masturbatory fantasy: "it's the End Times!"

I think "end-times" belief is a vestige from our days as nomads and the understanding that nothing lasts forever. When times are good, the ever-pertinent question is always "how does this end and what will we do when it does?"

That seems like a very accurate insight whenever a new year is coming to an end or a new event happening, death cults and end-time wingnuts often go about this.

Carlton's answer of plate tectonics as the cause of earthquakes was actually a pretty good one although not complete. The vast majority of earthquakes are attributed to the movement of the earth's crust. In the last ten years, there has been on average 4.4 earthquakes measuring greater than 5 on the Richter scale daily. If this sounds like a lot to you, you would be wrong. The number of earthquakes is actually down from the previous decade which averaged 5.2 earthquakes daily.

Maybe the reason the end times hasn't happened is because people keep predicting it. Once a day goes by where nobody predicts it, God will pop out and say "SURPRISE! IT'S APOCALYPSE TIME BITCHES!"
1000 of our years equals one day to God. The only one who knows when the end day is is the true God. Saying we are in the last days helps us stay awake. Read Daniel chapter 2 and 11.

BunnyBread: God's Word says we will not know the day nor hour but watchers will know the 'season'. I believe that applies to the Rapture, which comes before the Tribulation and we appear to be in the 'season' now. Once the covenant with many is confirmed for a 7 year period, (it will be broken at the 3 1/2 year mark), it should be pretty obvious when the final year is for all of Matt 24 to have taken place. John 3 16 invites you to know God's love, the desire of His heart and His promise to you before that time arrives. Have a good day.

Yeah, when I first started watching this show he seemed to me like a weaker co-host; but over the last few months he's proven me wrong time and time again. He can hold his own with the best of them!

The ComCat earthquake catalog contains an increasing number of earthquakes in recent years--not because there are more earthquakes, but because there are more seismic instruments and they are able to record more earthquakes.
The National Earthquake Information Center now locates about 20,000 earthquakes around the globe each year, or approximately 55 per day. As a result of the improvements in communications and the increased interest in natural disasters, the public now learns about earthquakes more quickly than ever before.
According to long-term records (since about 1900), we expect about 16 major earthquakes in any given year. That includes 15 earthquakes in the magnitude 7 range and one earthquake magnitude 8.0 or greater. In the past 40-50 years, our records show that we have exceeded the long-term average number of major earthquakes about a dozen times.
The year with the largest total was 2010, with 23 major earthquakes (greater than or equal to magnitude 7.0). In other years the total was well below the annual long-term average of 16 major earthquakes. 1989 only had 6 major earthquakes and 1988 only had 7.

I am a seismologist. there is no evidence to suggest earthquakes are increasing with time. only our ability to detect smaller and smaller earthquakes as station density & technology improve.

You guys are getting better and better. Jim's comment that plate tectonics as an explanation for all earthquakes would make scientists in that area cringe, but is somewhat OK from a layperson's viewpoint, is exactly the right way to explain things.
I was forced to read a slew of "boring" old English and Portuguese books from many different centuries to pursue one of my degrees, which was in Portuguese. Almost every book had some reference to the end times' being just around the corner.
First of all if god is love and knew all these signs will come, why needed to let humans suffer from these, he must have known humans will painfully suffer from these and foretells it!? How can this come from love?

There's a list of predicted end times on Wikipedia and it's unbelievably long and not one of them came true. Carlton should do some reading and then figure out if he still believes the end times are near.
They've been saying the end times are here every year for the last two thousand or so. it becomes particularly common every time there's a war, epidemic or natural disaster. lol
How do we know there are more earthquakes now than any other time in history? We are better at detecting them and reporting them now than ever before

I think its funny because the Bible says "know will know when it's going to happen" and also says that Jesus said it would be during the life time of his followers.....did they mean even Jesus wouldn't know either? Lol they can't seem to make up their minds lol 🤣

Reading prophetic meaning into earthquakes is identical to reading meaning into the movement of the stars. Imposing a prophetic meaning onto natural phenomena is combination of superstition, wishful thinking, and anxiety. Pour yourself a stiff drink, and call us in the morning.

There are approximately 20,000 earthquakes worldwide every year, it fluctuates obviously, but this was also the average back in 1900.
I ask my coworker:
Me: A war started in ukraine, where is the god?
CoW: The bible predicted this will happen.
Me: But many wars happen for the past 2000 years and yet he didn't return.
CoW: The god will save us.
Me: Where is he?
CoW: The god will save us if the whole world face crisis.
Me: Covid exists.
and then the very long conversation.. he always making excuse as for why the god is not appearing.

The stuff in those prophecies is always going on. I make all kinds of predictions and am ignored when I am wrong, lauded when I am right. Same. 🤔
The war machine is always evolving.
Even if i was given a choice that i could make god exist and it all be true, i would still choose to not make it true. Who wants to exist forever where a fraction of a second feels like a billion years ,all the time having to pray and worship for fear of being punished forever, no sane person would choose that and would choose to just not exist.
Christ himself said "...before this generation passes..." That was the first failed prediction.

I actually agree with the initial statement. I would expect the ground to shake a lot more in any end of the world, not just the christian one, so when he says that it's more of an observational one, that's true XD

I liked this caller. Yes, his argument was absolutely pants, but he had the honesty to realise and acknowledge it when examined.
Obviously more earthquakes will occur because god will reach down from the heavens and jiggle the tectonic plates around to make more earthquakes so the prophecy will be fulfilled.
