Many moons ago I used to have an XS 1.1 Special, and also ditched the airbox. The carbs and the air filters weight is then take up by the rubbers connecting to the engine, instead of being supported by the airbox as well. Not sure if it was the harsh climate that I lived in, but the brand new rubbers didn't last as long as I thought they would. And they weren't cheap then so I guess they still aren't. May be worth knocking up a bracket to add support?
Jish you just linked to their website, I'm having trouble finding these exact filters. I've got an xj 650 from 1982 myself, would love to get me a set of these. What should I be searching for? :)
That engine looks absolutely fantastic with those filters. That leather top goes very well with the crackle look of the carb and engine tops. Well done.
Hey brother awesome video, give the filters a firm wiggle, the black silicon is very oily and a slippery on the inside. The clamp holds it to the carb but I found one on the floor the next morning, Something I did was use some engine degreaser on that silicon flange part and also sanded the inside so it had some extra grip. No matter how tight I made the hose clamp on the filters they would easily come off, You don't want to lose one when out on a ride. :)
After I pull my carbs for a rebuild, I know what I'm doing for jetting...DNA Air Pods!! Those look absolutely glorious Jish my Friend! I hope you had an awesome Christmas! Cheers Mate! Zip~
Great channel! I just “found” you by accident (TH-cam put you on my home screen). I just watched all of the XJ650 Cafe Racer Build and subscribed (way before you were out of focus. Haha) Now get busy and release more videos! Thanks for the good informative videos.
Hey Jish, you try giving that starter a proper torture test to see if the Bendix Clutch is alright in it? That Clutch is the absolute worst design of these engines and the reason why a lot of bikes get permanently parked or owner-flipped repeatedly because the repair requires tearing down the ENTIRE engine, top half and bottom to get inside where the clutch mechanism is. It's the big circular bump area right in front of the starter towards the front of the engine. If you haven't actually properly tested the Bendix clutch with a torture test (THEY ARE NOTORIOUS FOR FAILING) I would DEFINITELY do that now that you have the engine out of the bike. If there is any easy way for you to test it while it is off the bike (Turning over the engine repeatedly using the starter for 15-20 seconds at a time and making sure it turns over properly and doesn't slip) then I would definitely do that, or just get in there and replace the rollers and springs on it anyway since it REQUIRES removing the engine from the bike to do. Wouldn't be a bad idea to change some other internals while doing that too like the timing chain tension-er and such, just general wear items for peace of mind. If you're gonna put so much time into this build might as well make sure right? Anyways, looking sick man Good Luck!
Hey Jish, awesome build! I’m basing my xj on your build. I was wondering what size filter/breather did you use for the camshaft and where can I buy it?
Love your work Jish! Question: If I have those cheap pods installed and was jetted properly for them, if I want to upgrade to better quality ones like the K&N, do you think I need to get carbs re-tuned and possibly jetted differently to match?
You do really nice work. I bought a 1981 Yamaha xj650 Maxim. It’s a complete mess and not running. I feel that I need a tetanus shot just from looking at it. I can’t wait to get started!
when changing to those high flow air filters you had to calibrate the fuel inlet or it is not necessary I did the same I have a yamaha xj 700 maxim from 1985 and now it turns off in neutral
Im just now in the middle of the strip down phase on an 1980 xs 850. We may have sharing some similar looks here. looking forward to your electronics episode.
Hi Jish, I'm working on rebuilding an XJ650 myself, and it's my first real mechanical project. Your aluminum engine parts are absolutely spotless, and I'm wondering how you got them that way! Mine are dirty and scuffed, and even after some engine degreaser they're still quite cloudy. How would you recommend cleaning them up? Thanks!
I know the filters look cool but hitachi carbs on an XJ 650 run like crap with pods. You can reject them to dump more fuel in but without the airbox there’s not sufficient vacuum to lift the carb slides as intended. I know some rejet kits also have you drill the air holes in the slides larger to help this. With the airbox in you get a nice little low end torque boost from the free supercharger effect of the valve overlap of the other cylinders. The bike is more streetable with the airbox but maybe better for full wide open power with pods and a rejet. These bikes are lean anyway from the factory and even a free flowing oem filter or 4-1 might benefit from a rejet anyway. I’ve got an XJ650RJ that came with pods and the bike would never run right. I managed to find an old set of carbs with useable oem float valves and needles which had the PERFECT oem float height already set - unobtanium - and an oem airbox off eBay and a mac 4-1 and the bike runs fantastic. With pods the bike was also super hard to start in comparison the airbox seems to make it nearly fire up instantly. Pods look cool, and run like crap. If you go that route make sure you’re not blocking the air compensation jets in the front of the airbox side of the carbs, most pod filters do.
Dynojet sells a pod filter jet kit supposedly specially made for my bike 85 XJ700 Maxim but an old man who owns a bike shop said it'll never run right without the airbox....Pods do work good on certain carbs/bike models but not on the 85 XJ700 Maxim. I was thinking of using clear polycarbonate (the super tough plexi glass) making templates and mockup and building a clear see through airbox the same dimensions as the stock box.
Saludos, después del Water blast, aplicó algún recubrimiento, alguna pintura? Estoy restaurando una 750 Maxim y me gustaría que tuviese la apariencia de su motor. Interesantes videos, gracias y saludos desde México.
Since the 750 was mentioned, the 650 and 750 use the same carbs with different jets but they also have different size air jets as well so it would not be a direct bolt on. Oem on a 650 is main 110 pilot 40. People have reported ok results on pods using a 116 main and a 42 pilot. The 750 jets are 120 main and 43 pilot, both of which are pretty big for this motor. You can also buy a numbered micro drill set and drill the jets out but it’s a pain and hard to get precise results. Just keep in mind the carbs are CV , constant velocity. The airbox means you get a uniform velocity of smooth airflow, pods replace velocity with volume and smooth airflow with turbulence. Additionally. The factory airbox boots act like velocity stacks which was part of the design. It’s crazy when you see that the whole motor is designed to breathe perfectly through an area about the size of a zippo lighter. I’ve been fighting this all for years and nothing beats the airbox on these. But that being said the pods look great
Any results with a 750 on pods? 124 main and 45 pilot? If the math from 650 makes sense, I have a 85 750 with pods, just cleaned up the carb and installed back on, got it running decent now, will hold idle, has a dead spot in low rpm throttle, have carb kit on its way, would love to hear input
Appreciate that you want/need content Jish but you're going to have to completely dismantle everything to re-jet the carbs, it'll run lean and rough as f**k until you do. Fair enough wanting to see them on but it's a bit 'one step forward to take two back's mate. Nice pods though 🙂
Indeed buddy! And i have accepted this. I still need to get the engine in place and the bike completely wired before i even consider jetting. Its all part the process though ✌️

Looks great. What brand of crackle coating did you use on your carby hats?
That motor is a work of art. You should be very proud. Totally AWESOME
Thanks Jack!

That engine looks sick!!

Thanks! came out so well!
What kit is this or the part numbers doing an xj650 myself that I'm about to start working on

Noted brother! I did notice that. I will do just that before the final fitup 👌⚡️

MADE IN MY COYNTRY GREECE ✊🇬🇷🇬🇷🇬🇷 very premium filter !!!
Come on guys.......?!!! Just 2 thumbs up? Jish deserves more!

I'm extremely new to bikes just bought my first it's an 82 yamaha xj750 but will these mess with the air fuel mixture?

Vapour blasting 😁
Engine looks smart Jish! Nice one.
Did you rejet?
Teardrop would ne the shape name you were looking for... 😀
Looking good as always.
Looks like it just came out of the crate! My Honda 185 engines got alot to live up too😬🙈
that looks amazing! Where did you buy the new carb boots?
Merry merry Christmas

What’s the part number I can’t find them I have a 1982 Yamaha xj750r seca
Hi. I really need some input. Would these fit a 2002Honda CB 750?
Is there any advantage to the k&n filters where it is a 2 in 1 sort of deal? It's an oval pod filter with 2 holes in it for each cylinder. Thanks
It's about packaging as much as anything. If you don't have space for 4* pods, that type may fit.
He is working hard

You made a beautiful job. Speak about performance and xj...🤣🤣🤣. Heu... Thé dna filters is juste for the look
Amazing engine! i wonder if there such engine in my country
Those are cool but pretty pricy. They were $70 US each. I went with K&N filters which were 170$ for all 4
Where can I get engine parts bro?
Where r u from actually
Go on eBay
