    I always thought the great stone dragon was a representation of Mulans father, so ancient it can no longer go go battle, so a younger, unproven warrior (Mushu/Mulan) needs to take its place. Nobody expects this unproven person to make it, but they have some tricks up their sleeves, and discover a lot about themselves in the process.

      I like that theory better. This one stretches it like no tomorrow.
      Mushu deserves to have "his reflection" show him who he is inside, too.
      Ancestor: "We must send the most powerful [of the 4 guardians] of all."
      Mushu: "Okay, I get the joke, I'll go."
      *Ancestors laugh*
      Mushu: "You don't think I can do it! Watch this, man!" *Blows fizzles of fire* "A-hey! Jump back, I'm pretty hot, huh?"

    • @Donika691
      @Donika691 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      +Alexander Long Well if a powerful dragon could be killed simply by breaking a statue, he wouldn't be very powerful would he? The statue is just a vessel, as we do see other depictions of most likely the same dragon.

    • @AlexanderLong
      @AlexanderLong 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      As a Chinese, ancient Chinese do believe spirits live in those Idols/statues. so when the idol broke, the spirit would no longer there.

      Darkendragon You have a point, but I still don't think the great stone dragon is dead, he's a spiritual being.

    • @DevlinBlake
      @DevlinBlake 8 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      +Alexander Long Though they refer to it as 'waking up' I think of the statues more as portals. The spirits come in take over the statues which gives them a form in this world. The stone dragon was slow to get to his portal
      because he doesn't come unless absolutely needed. Once his statue is destroyed, he can't enter this world. That doesn't mean he's dead, he just can't come. They'd need to make him a new form so he can enter this world.

  • @johnfrench1441
    @johnfrench1441 7 ปีที่แล้ว +403

    I think the Great Stone Dragon didn't waken because he/she/it was wise and knew that if he/she/it intervened it would have disrupted the outcome that he/she/it knew would come about.

      To complete the theory, The Great Stone Dragon's spirit went to Mulan. Making it completely slept even when being woke up by the gong. Because(english teacher says do not start your sentence with the word because) he/she/it knows how to restore her honor to the family, and also with the help of Mushu.

      You can just say 'They'. It was a legitimate neutral term long before the non-binary crowd came in and absorbed it as a way to identify their gender/lack of gender/genders. Lmao, it's always been grammatically correct to use it as both a singular and plural word.

    Actually dragons are classified as guardians protectors to scare away evil spirits, say the Chinese dragon/lion was worshiped and created because of the story/legend of a farmer that keeps getting his crops getting stolen by a evil spirit but one day he lied out red cloth and one day the evil spirit thought it was fire and ran away and so the farmer kept doing that but one day the evil spirit found out it wasn't fire and continued stealing crops so then the farmer created or summoned the Chinese dragon/lion that was made in different colors for different emotions and so now every year on Chinese New Year the Chinese dragon walks zigzag (the evil spirit only walks straight) and throws lettuce or cabbage at the crowd for good luck and fortune and sometimes tie up a crab lobster to say it captured the evil spirit and then he gets rewarded by ang pow which is the traditional red packet that we give with money inside.
    I hope this helped

    i always thought that the dragon could see tge future and knew that Mushu was destined to lead Mulan to be a great soldier and ultimately save China and bring great honor to her family which she and everyone else prayed hardcore for in the beginning, so he was answering their prayers.

    • @bakaichigo
      @bakaichigo 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      This is basically what I assumed myself. The Great Stone Dragon was supposed to be summoned to *_bring Mulan home and stop her from dishonoring the family._* If it had done that, she would not have saved China from the invading Huns, and the glory and honor she brings her family would never have happened - the bigger dragon would have been able to bring her home where Mushu was helpless (he was too tiny and couldn't shift sizes, remember).
      It seems to me that the guardian spirit (if this video isn't correct about its theory) likely never awoke because it was _the wrong choice for the family._ Dragons symbols of ageless wisdom, strength, intellect... And its well within the confines of the Asian mythology that they exist outside of time and are thus able to access knowledge from past, present and future alike. I don't see why it couldn't be possible for either this theory, or the one in the video, to be true.
      Hell, maybe the Great Dragon's spirit entered Mulan precisely because of that, by choice, so that Mushu could redeem himself (and play his rightful and better suited role), keep the ancestors from summon it to stop Mulan from her destiny, and help Mulan when needed. Thus it wasn't there to be awoken/was already awoken in Mulan when Mushu went to wake it.

    • @jocelyngipson7882
      @jocelyngipson7882 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think this may be a bit off. Both mulan and her grandmother prayed to the ancestors. It’s possible Mulan prayed and got the protection of the great stone dragon. So even if the ancestors had requested the dragon to bring her home, it wouldn’t have matter bc he was already gone.

    Something I've thought of that helps this theory, it's that Mushu was sent to awaken the stone dragon. He technically did. If Mulan became a warrior in her own it wouldn't have been likely to happen. We saw what happened when she arrived to the camp and how Mushu assisted her throughout the movie. He basically awakened the stone dragon within her. (sorry if I didn't make sense)

      I don't think so. In one of the shots of the Emperial City we see a dancing dragon costume going around indicating that it should be chinese new year, unless they use that dragon costume for other things. This tells me that the new year is the year of the dragon and if Mulan is supposed to be 16 or 18 during this movie then that puts her birth year outside of the 12 year cycle of the year of the dragon. Of course anyone can feel free to correct me on that. My knowledge of Chinese celebrations is very limited.

      actually, I think the dragon in the movie looks like a really elongated "lion dance" costume; it is obviously very long with the face of a dragon, yet is flat-faced (like the lion costume) and the costume encompasses the performers (obviously used to dramatic effect to hide the Huns, but still).

    I always thought that the Great Stone Dragon knew it wasn't his destiny to help Mulan. I mean, he's a dragon getting ordered around by dead people. Yes, I know ancestors are a big part of their religion, and correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Dragons were of a higher level than ancestors. Why would he want to get ordered around by a bunch of old, closed-mided, dead people who more than likely know nothing. I mean, this is a farmer's family.
    What the Great Stone Dragon DID do, however, was wake the grandmother. Right after the eyes flash, the grandmother wakes up and immediately goes to check on Mulan, finding her missing. She does this even before waking up Mulan's parents, lighting up the house, or doing anything else. And she's pretty fast about it as well.
    So, instead of Mulan being the Great Stone Dragon, the dragon just knows that his time has passed as the family guardian and he's passing on his mantle to Mushu.

      +aphftwb-tches This works well with what the directors and producers have said in commentary as well. So the GSD wakes the grandmother, because she's the closest to the ancestors age wise (they said it lol), and gets her to get shit done

    I thought it was possible that Mushu is, or maybe was, the Great Stone Dragon. Either it was literally his form before he screwed up, got that guy beheaded, lost his memory and was demoted to gong-ringer, or it is him in a more metaphorical sense, in that when the spirit leader sends Mushu to "wake up the Great Stone Dragon", he is actually sending him to "wake up" his own sense of determination and loyalty, and help Mulan. I think the spirit leader could just be playing dumb when he talks to the statue's head, and he knows full well that in fact Mushu is going to leave and to live up to his potential.

      +Adriel Carrasco definitly possible! But we can't be sure since the movie doesn't clarify what are the powers the ancestors posses. But it would make them way cooler in my book. Picture this: after Mushu pushes the head ancestor at the end of the movie, and he replies that 'oh all right! You can be a guardian again' with a frustrated sigh, and Mushu leaves, the ancestor smiles privately, knowing this was his plan all along.

    But if she was the Great Stone Dragon that would mean Mushu was not needed to help her. Yet obviously we see Mulan wouldn't have achieved what she did without the help of Mushu meaning the GSD *saw* that Mushu needed to be the dragon to help her, (and also help himself redeem his past mistakes,) so he chose not to wake up.

    There are a couple points that I don't count as "evidence" but I do agree with the theory. Mulan isn't a literal dragon, obviously, but I think she inherited the spirit of a dragon (not as a sentient being but as willpower). That's why the stone dragon didn't wake up, there was nothing spiritual left in it. Growing up, I missed every single one of these details as evidence because I thought they were all symbolism. Dragons being everywhere were just there because they're cool and it's China and dragons are a thing. What other animal motif would have been used? A rooster?

    Concept - What is the great stone dragon was living in her father, which helped him survive and gain respect and honor in the war he fought in decades before, but was transferred to Mulan once she decided to go to war in her fathers place. If you look at the scene at 03:24 there is a transition from the old stone dragon engraving in the families shrine to a younger looking dragon in the Fa families bedroom where Mulan appears from shortly afterwards. Just an idea to mull over!

  • @slyviacooper
    @slyviacooper 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    My thought was that because the great stone dragon was exposed to the elements like snow and rain had caused it to not be able to wake due to the fact it was not in the temple like the other statues where they would be partly protected from the elements.

    • @Riwillion
      @Riwillion 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Pretty sure that´s not the case. The family spirits act and speak as though they personally know the Great Stone Dragon as well as Mushu, obviously. Meaning they can hardly be the same entity - there is a clear distinction between them. Also, pretty sure Mushu would know if he were that other guy he actively tries to communicate with. I always understood it the way that the Great Stone Dragon was just taking his sweet time waking up, or just wasn´t present for some reason or something, and Mushu destroyed his statue because he was impatient (and kinda stupid). Which either killed the Great Stone Dragon, or prevented him from manifesting in our world, not sure about which one.

    • @WorldWearyAngel

      They do imply that Mushu had a true form but was stricken with his current form for misdeeds. It is possible that when they struck him they removed his memories of HIs other form and he is lying when he talks about knowing his other form which would mirror mulans lie about being a man and Crickets lie about being lucky XD. However later in the 2nd movie i dont believe he has another form so perhaps when he destroyed his statue he now permanently remains in his lessened form?

    My theory is when the great stone dragons eyes were shining when Mulan left to take her father´s place her grandmother woke up in that same moment, so I think she is a psychic who can feel spirits and that stone dragon is a spirit who can only watch over mulan and not be there for her, so instead of that dagon spirit, Mushu is going to be on her side instead. And that moment when Mulan come back to her father, and in that moment we; who watch the movie, got to see it from that dragon spirit´s eyes.

    I agree with your theory but may I add something ? the great stone dragon is back in mulan 2 but this time it`s more thinner and maybe even what you call... more feminine? but nobody mentions the great stone dragon this time since it`s not really the most important thing for the plot. My theory is the dragon statue becomes whoever becomes him..but this could be that they just wanted a more feminience statue but then why change it all if it`s not important to the story? maybe if they make a new mulan movie we`ll find out that the statue is mulan or that it changed back to normal because mulan no longer is the dragon and someone new will become the dragon!!! but who knows it`s just a theory. if you like this theory please leave a like on this comment! and Jon if you read this just consider it and also give me credit for adding to your theory!

    • @kadeykoo2575

      +Michelle Ginorio Well think about this as well, Mulan's father has also been to war which is why he walks with a cane and cannot fight in the current one. My guess is that the great stone dragon, when needed most, will embody himself in the Fa warrior that needs his guidance. The statue was more gruff, wide, manly in the first movie because the one who needed him last was Mulan's father. Then Mulan goes to war, returns, and is going to be wed in the second movie. Mulan was the last one to go to war in their family, so the dragon stone took on a more feminine form after being embodied in Mulan.

    I had a theory that Mushu was the stone Dragon with his memory gone somehow. Basically The stone dragon was famous among the spirits and humans but at some point something happened making him lose his memory and end up as Mushu. But nobody knows this. And over time tales about the stone dragon get changed until he is said to be the statue that we see in the film. Which is why the stone dragon didn't wake up. He was already. But that's my theory.
