- Pros and Cons of Keeping Pet Parrots CAGELESS! One of the things I meant to say was, "They don't appear to be NEGATIVELY affected by the lack of 12 hours of sleep." I do see them make up for it with quiet naps during the day sometimes, and they're definitely quieting down around 7pm, and not really getting vocal until 7am, even if I see them wake around 6:45am or so.

👎🏼Lack of sleep on the bird's part (human schedule)
👎🏼High-stress for humans regarding safety/dangers
👎🏼Ability to access human food (and for people to give in!)
👎🏼Not being able to cook!
👎🏼Not having free flight trained and capable birds (accidents become more likely)
👎🏼The mess
There's always the risk of having someone leave a fan on, a toilet lid open, or a door open (even if you have friends over who don't know your household rules) so the risk for accidental escape is MUCH higher.

I had an African Grey. He was out of his cage to sleep. He loved staring at the light over the range. He stayed on his perch. He lovingly stared and then would go to sleep
My rainbow lorikeet only sleeps in his cage. during the day he’s with me all the time. It is great but just like a child you must watch them all the time, I’ll be composting and he wants to play, I’ll be hanging the washing and he’s scaling the line, I’m going to the toilet and he’s mimicking the noise of the wee lol! He just wants to be on my shoulder the entire day he’s the most energetic bird I’ve ever seen. When I am gardening he will dig in the dirt and sing he’s such a blessing. I can’t eat around him he wants to try everything I put in my mouth he is so curious. His poops are easy to clean and I just wipe it up ASAP, good to keep wipes near by. He has moments where the dogs bark may scare him and he can get really freaked out and bite but very rarely. He is so smart it’s unreal so much personality. I never knew birds could act the way he does and like the things he likes... he wants to wrestle with my hand he’s so amazing!

Trust me not having a cage is the best thing for Ringnecks as long as they have a time out stand They are obnoxiously Pig headed if they want out....no cage will stop them lol....and then comes the NOISE

My green cheek came home at the age of one and half. He was caged in a pet store whole life… I live in a studio so I thought it would be easy to have him cage free. He took my plant stand as his chill spot and had a sleeping spot that he also chose. He knows the one spot I don’t want him in and is respectful of that. He’s such a good boy.
My mom had an Indian ringneck parrot 🦜 very similar to yours- He lined 33 years!! He said ‘Hello’ & ‘Talk to me’ and he whistled charge!!
Ive been trying to let my budgie out of the cage so he can get used to being out. He was very scared at first, kept flying whenever i moved a bit. Now hes a bit more chill and i dont have to tiptoe anymore. And he can fly back to his cage when he wants. Or i can lure him to my hand and direct him.
That's very sweet! My budgie came to me clipped from a pet store. I have to force her to come out of her cage but once she does it's a whole learning experience and she grows so much. Hurray for our budgies! The cutest, tiniest of parrots! ☺

Be patient. Your budgie will one day surprise you. Mine one day just flew and landed on my shoulder. It quickly progresses if you don't break his trust. I wish you many years of joy with your feathered friend.

Glad you found us!! Just don't take that decision lightly... Birds are very high maintenance pet, they are the 3rd most popular pet and the number 1 most rehomed for a reason.

my 10 month old Ringneck is a free-range chicken. He had a big cage at first but i moved after 2 months and i found the space so awkward for his cage, so he has a beautiful big tree over an old upright piano with a few areas to explore. there's 3 border collies around who just watch him (never would touch, just herd!), and the ceiling fan never goes on, everyone is happy and no close calls. he is so clingy that if he's not on his tree, he's on my head or atop the curtains. a lot of cleanup but he he's so happy. The big cage is now at my boyfriend's parents place for when we're there, and he only ever goes in there in defiance at bedtime.

Can I say something contraversial that goes against everything you teach in relation to the Indian Ringneck?
We had all the same struggles with our IRN as what I'm hearing from other people. Once I got him target trained, knew how to step up and a few tricks, I would slowly approach but swiftly put my hand over him and my thumb under his beak.
It looks like my hands are around his neck but I'm only touching right under his beak. Then we would pet his head. He definitely didn't like it and he was freaked out at first. We would end it with a treat.
After a week or two of doing that, we progressed to slowly putting our hands over him and just petting without putting my hand under his beak. A second or two at first and then longer and longer. Always followed with a treat.
People say this is flooding but it didn't result in learned helplessness. Our bird flies to us now and seeks out our company. He's 1000% happier now than he used to me.
He's still not 100% cool with petting he allows it on occasion without any complaint.
This is what they do with Indian Ringnecks in Pakistan and India. They just hold them and pet them. It's flooding but for some God forsaken reason for IRN's it works. Indians and Pakistanis have been keeping these birds for thousands of years, so how can we say it's 100% wrong?
It's a case-by-case basis for me and we gave it 5 months of target training on trust training only.

Jokes apart. Ringnecks are difficult. They're the most challenging parrots. If you're a calm person go for Electus, they're beautiful, almost toy like appearance and very calm.
He is so interested in what you're saying. Btw you inspire me so much. I wish I could do this. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I would add that another downside is that they're with you all the time. "you time" is limited. Sometimes I don't want a bird on me. One of my birds prefers to just chill in the same room as us but the other wants to be on us 24/7.

My cockatiel has a cage but the door is always open. He comes in and out as he pleases and he’s really happy about it. For unknown reasons, his flight feathers on his right wing stopped growing so he can’t fly well and he knows it so he doesn’t try and fly too far to get into any kind of trouble. When he wants attention or wants to move about with us, he lets us know with chirping and body language. He has a little perch that I put on an end table and he will chill with me for hours while I work too. He is 25 years old!
My Sammy is completely cageless. Birds dont see well at nite so a nite lite is a no no as shodows may make them take flight. which could be a death sentance. Quiet and dark from 10 to 5am. A garden jungle with a tree is also essential so they can learn to entertain themselves while im busy. A small plastic childs swimm pool works excellent filled with dirt and plants like basil, oregano, lettuce etc, and lots of toys. Love your channel

I have 2 amazons and they are free outside all day, i built 2 stands out of pvc pipe and a wire stand with cup holders that stands a little over 2 feet off the ground so they can't look for mischief when we step outside for a while aka climb down and bite wires, furniture, etc. They only go in a huge steel cage when we go out for the day and amazing they willingly get in the cage themselves lol they seem to understand when we are going out and it's like they know it's for protection because after a day of chilling outside they go inside the cage to sleep, then back on the stands at mornings.

Are there videos or books you can recommend to me that will help me in learning to train my new baby? Yes, I know what most ppl say about the INR's but I've thought about it over and over and always come back to this one. I'm willing to put the time in that is required, I HAVE the time & will be home daily with him & most importantly, I don't just "give up or get tired" of my animals. I would appreciate any direction you could give me to help insure this lil guy has a great life with myself & my husband 😁
Mine have many large cages, perches and toys all over the house, they are in and out all day. They even have perches in the showers. They tend to like the cage for after meals when they are feeling sleepy.
I have 30 birds that I have rescued and kept. Most were cage free at one point. My medium and large birds do great. Unfortunately I have found no matter how careful you set up a room the small birds tend to always find the oddest places to get stuck and eventually die. So my small birds are always in a huge cage for their safety.
My birds are cageless and they are so much happier having the choice to be where they want, I do currently have them limited to one room though as my budgie hasn't been recall trained yet!
I have to say my talking budgie is the best of both worlds - open door cage. He loves to chill in his cage but will come out often and the second you call him. He goes in it by himself at night and I close it for safety if I have workers over or if I want to sleep in 😬 It’s next to a window where he cheerfully eats his food and watches the outdoor birds soar.
I have 4 budgies who behave similarly.
My Alexandrine stayed out of his cage all day unless he chose to go inside... but at bed time when he wanted to go to bed, he made it clear to us he wanted the cage covered. Oh i miss that sweet bird.
Each of your entrances and your exits of your house should have a vestibule or what we call in corrections the sallyport. It would help with your cooling or your healing of your home but most of all, it also cut down on birds accidentally getting outside.
My three IRN's had a huge cage in my family room for a couple of years and would never go in it even when I encourged them to use it. So out went the big cage and my husband built them a huge play centre where the cage was and they happily play and sleep there, cageless. It's full of toys and ropes and gum branches. They really love that area but are free to use the whole kitchen family area. With cooking we wait until they settle down to their play area for the night which is just before dark, they put themselves to bed now. I'm use to chopping veggies with them having their share whilst I chop, but the stove doesn't go on until they are settled into their sleep area. Yes the mess is huge but kept in the one area of the house and there are plenty of people to help clean, it's not just one persons job. My husband has started bird proofing the outside patio for spring and summer her in Australia, so I'll see if they like it out there for short periods supervised during the day.

love your videos. don’t have parrots but i have doves and i take some of your advice in working to tame them.
It was @BirdTricks videos on clicker training to say words /phrases on command that got me to teach my conure to say two words (with hand sign cue) . He learned each one in about an hour, two days a part. Parrots are SO smart ,and catch on so fast! He is almost 5, but already knew spin and roll over from when he was under a year of age. Now he also can say two words on command.

Indian Ring Necks are one of the most adorable creatures on the planet. I've been fascinated with parrots for a long time but I always told myself I'd have to settle for living vicariously through others. My living arrangements and schedule and current overall lifestyle simply won't permit owning a bird like this, and I'm completely fine with that. However, every IRN parrot video makes me wanna buckle on that decision and go run out and try to adopt one. It's not gonna happen, but perhaps one day.
I love my IRN but I don't think they should be pet birds. My vet said my IRN is the most tame he has ever seen and I still think he is crazy and harder to handle compared to my other two parrots. The talking is cute but it's really not worth it. Videos on the internet cause problems because people think its really cute. But please know that IRNs bite, scream and fly a lot. Even my really tame and well handled one. And they turn wild very quickly if you don't handle them. You have to be ready for bites that draw blood and they really hurt. If you have never had a parrot before I strongly advise to go for an easier first bird. And do lots of research. :) Every species will have good and bad, and not all birds from the same species are the same.

We are pro cageless for our babies but we do have cages that they use when it is bed time but otherwise they are out and about as part of the family 🥰
When we bought our ringnecks we knew that they will require a lot of training and effort. So far they don't even allow us to get close to them, and forget about hands, my gosh, hands are like snakes to them. We've gotten them 2 weeks ago, so far the progress we made is that they'll allow us to get within arms reach of the cage if we walk real slow, most of the time. Eating anything off of our hands? "Better wait a while before we eat"
It can take even a year to build trust.

My rainbow lorikeet started off with just a basket as his perch and toilet but he seemed insecure when he was home alone. He hides behind sofas and TVs where all the electronic wire are. So, we got him a cage but leave the door open at all times and he is more comfortable
I have been watching you for the past 3 months I am new to TH-cam! I have learned so many great things, and with time my Sun Conure will be on the pellet system....... I have made many mistakes with her food...... Oh boy!! However I have a suggestion for you........... I never lock Sweetie in her cage she is free to come in and out as she please...... But around 6pm she comes and has a cuddle with me on the couch and when she is tired she walks to the end of the couch and flutters (after your videos I have stopped trimming her wings) I then pick her up and she has a medium box with a very soft blanket that she sleeps in!! She loves it in there. It is like her own room! When she goes in I put a towel down over the opening so if she need to she can come out!
You can educate me if I doing wrong by that........... But I am hoping it a good tip for you since I have gotten so many many valuable tips from you!!

I'd be afraid the box would stimulate egg laying. My green cheek conure is free most if the day. I have worked hard to make his cage a place he likes to be and I have trained going in to the cage as a trick for his very favorite treat. Often I don't even need to ask him to go in because he spends quite a bit of time playing in there. All I have to do is close the door if I need him to stay.
The soft fabric might invoke nesting behavior.
@@Ansonidak Thank you I did not think of that, it been our routine for quite a while now! Yes Sweetie does like her cage too, Especially when she got a new round cotton toy...... for the next 2 weeks she did not want anything but her cage and would cling to her toy all so happy!

Oh yeah the mess is real. I have 4 kakarikis that are almost cageless most of the time. They don't even sleep in the cage unless they want to but sometimes i just have to have them in a cage for a while to take a day off XD. The kakarikis just love flying so much that i feel bad if they don't get the space to fly around, hopefully someday I can get a bigger house and have them free in their own room all the time.
Great video as always. I learn so much from you! I have a 1 year old Caique, Lucy. I work from home so she is cageless for a majority of the day. It can be high stress because she gets into things even though I felt like I parrot proofed them, so she has to be watched closely. The positive is we get a lot of great bonding throughout the day, the biggest negative is that when I leave the room or cage her, she gets stressed and sometimes screams until she can see me again. It isn't bad and because of your video with Widget, I learned from you and am working on the occasional screaming. Thank you for all you and Dave do to educate people with birds!
When you leave the room tell rhe bird 2here your going. I always say I'm going upstairs and wait till my bird says OK & my name. He's calm. IF I leave the room and don't tell him, he freaks like what happened? Is she OK? Did something get her. Don't worry bird will learn the names by hearing you in that room. Stopped the panic screaming. I also make sure I tell him I'm going out so he knows. He always waves and says OK bye bye. I even say I'm going night night now. He says that and bye to me.
Get a basket with foot toys. Purchase it neat you so burb can play and you watch
My burb does shake with his paw, wave with his wings, and kiss kiss, and he makes clicking sounds with his beak, and wave with his paw, and show me the wings where he spreads them out
My Green Cheek's cage door gets left open 99% of the time. I only shut it when I have guests or when he needs a time out.
I trained him to understand that he's allowed on the cage, playstand, and kitchen cabinets (and to stay in the kitchen/living room when unsupervised). There's nothing stimulating on the cabinets, he just flies up there and back again for exercise (so kitchen poop is rare).
My trick with the playstand is to buy square playstands with seed catchers, then extend the catcher's range with empty cereal boxes.

I don't think I'd be able to let my boy out without constant supervision, or he'll go and destroy literally everything he can get his beak on
Mine chewed my computer mouse wheel, watch band, and phone case. The most expensive was biting holes into the tubing for my sleep apnoea machine!

my grey has a cage to play chill and sleep shes free to fly if she wants its never locked but you know what she loves that cage so much she dont fly much only when something spooks her one day i hope to have her fly to me when asked to do so but shes happy where she is only problem is the summer my home gets hot and i cant open the windows as she may fly out of one given the chance
What aviary did you find for Blueberry? I know she's too small to go in the aviarys with wider bar spacing. We have a Prevue Hendrix for Angel but I would love a bigger aviary for her.
I’ve been working with my Conure for over a year, and he just doesn’t like any treats enough to want to do tricks or really listen. I’ve watched your channel for ideas and tips, but he is so picky. It seems like ever since I let his wings grow out and he can fly, he has no interest in training. I refuse to clip them though.
Diet? Fresh feeding system! Enough dark uninterrupted sleep? No cage in rooms, at sleeping time, with noise, tv, conversations. I know, it sounds so basic. It's true though. I saw a difference in my budgie. I can only imagine how much more important it is the larger the bird. Best of luck
I have an Indian ringneck, and lets just say it isn't easy. I trained Him to sit on top of his cage, so he's ALWAYS cageless, including at night, and when I'm not in the house.
Wouldn't mosquitoe nets for your windows be an option so they won't fly out? I don't know wether or not they are safe or if you mentioned them before but I think it could be a solution.

I would really love to see the logistics of showering with your bird. Do you spray them or splash them? Is it just the mist that gives them the bath? Not knowing how it's done and trying could be fear inducing.
My African Grey was afraid of water. He didn't like getting misted but loved water in a pan to play in and splash his feathers. My other bird takes baths with me. He starts out on cabinet door while I get bath ready. If he wants to come over then he will climb over my leg to the spigot. I check water temp and it's not full on. He usually gets drenched. I blow dry him on warm with dryer 2ft away from him. Checking temp often. He doesn't like in his face. Who would. But stretches out his wings. And on chest.
You can buy a shower perch that sticks to the wall or allow the bird to perch on your finger arm shoulders et al. Just start out with them in the room, if they seem calm, bring them into the shower. They will often just sit and allow a few splashes to get them. They will run up your arm or fly onto the shower head if uninterested. If they seem calm, happy and appreciative of the water, you can gently splash them and see how you go. @@2Ryled I would exercise caution with blow dryers as some of them have coatings that can be toxic to the bird. They don’t use blow dryers in the wild...

I found out my irn was just being a bratty teenager when he started doing the same gesture of banging his beak on the cage and saying “here”.
Which is what we do frustratingly trying to get him to come to us. Banging our finger were we would like him to be and saying “here”.
Only he was using it on us… and it worked……….
So we knew straight away he understood he just didn’t want to oblige…. Unlike us who are always awaiting the time to be approved by birb god.
