    Just in time Jamie, we rescued 2 love birds last week. They have spent the last 4 years cage bound, one is feather plucking and chewing, they have a vet appointment this Friday. We already started their dietary transition, we started positive association on day one and we have been expanding their comfort zone with a mosquito net set up around their cage, they have been really positively responsive.
    As you've pointed out one bird is braver, and no shocker that it's the one plucking. Up side with all the changes the naked one is already growing new feathers. I have been following you guys for a long time and everything I have learned is coming in handy. Thank you so much.

      @@bigislandchickens6747 I've got quite a similar situation to you, but I think I've got less experience. Neighbour had 2 lorikeets, died & relatives were talking about trying to get a pet shop to take them, I offered. I've got wildlife rescue experience, but none with pet or abused birds. I've had them about 3 weeks now, both were in separate little cages with a piece of rope & metal tin & that was it for years :(
      Braver boy's a plucker (but like yours, mine hasn't plucked with me, not since the second day anyway, did one feather day one & squealed in pain :( also just rocked back & forward while shivering when I first got them) girl's super hormonal & cage aggressive.
      I watched them for a few hours when I first got them & they clearly liked each other & were getting comfort from being near each other, so I put them both into a new cage together & they're still figuring that out, nothing to worry about with being hurt, but they don't know how to interact either, I've even tried playing them videos of lorikeets preening each other to try to teach them (which I think has helped, they're sharing food better now, girl certainly watched VERY intently lol was really cute).
      I also had to half cover the cage initially cause their stress & fear was so high, which obviously didn't help with the hormone situation, but they were just too freaked out & stressed otherwise, so I covered 3 sides & half the top & then gradually uncovered it all over a couple of weeks. They'll be moving into a bigger cage soon too, as soon as I've finished setting it up & think they're ready to cope with it, meanwhile I also have an opening on the cage top permanently open, cause the cage is pretty small for 2 birds & in case of fights, they're not trapped & it's on an old walker with wheels & I'm moving it into a sleep room & living room & outside for cleaning & getting them gradually used to new stuff within the safety of their cage & it's going well.
      Mine seem relatively tame BUT trying to train step up & he just will not do it! Reminds me of the bird tricks video with the bird who had been forced with the glove. I've got 1 foot onto my hand though now, so getting there, but so much more resistant than I thought he would be & 2 days & multiple sessions at the one foot up point & not even a hint of getting further, so I'm in for a long haul at getting anywhere with training I think :( just no trust at all :(
      The biting my hand everytime I put it into the cage to change food & water etc has largely stopped now, still happens if I'm not paying attention, but FAR better than it was, where I could only access the containers in the dark while they slept or while in the process of hosing out the cage & with the hose between the bird & my hand (not aggressively, just needed to hose it out anyway & they'd go to the other side of the cage as I did each side & I found that worked to get my hand in, now one of them wants to drink & play with the water from the hose as I hose it out :)) & bitty one will now lick treats off my fingers through the cage wire & is generally ok with not biting, the boy that I was told just nibbles not bites does bite on occasion now though, I think he was just too dominated & scared to bite before & now he's starting to feel a little more confident in expressing himself with me. I'm making progress, but it is a challenge & feels like 1 step forward 2 steps back sometimes :(
      I haven't done the vet yet, cause of how freaked out they are & I feel like doing it too soon might be worse than waiting till they're a little more settled, especially cause with covid, the local bird vet won't allow humans into the building, the assistant comes out & get the birds, takes them in & vet assesses them & then do a phone consult, so I'm not that comfortable with that, given how stressy they are & that I'd have to yank them out of the cage to get there, I'm really not sure at what point to do it though, I do feel like I might be putting it off too long

  • @cyn4476

    I saw an earlier video with this advice of working with the more brave bird. My cockatiel has been my baby all his life and when he was injured, he became very distrustful and scared of my hands (having meds stuffed in his face and on his injured wing was almost more traumatic than the initial injury). This video is perfect to help me get closer with him through his mate. She's in a different cage now, having rejected him and will attack him if in the same cage, but he watches everything she does and wants to be near her.
    They can play together outside of the cage, so I'm going to work on this technique to see if it works for us. Thank you!!

      @rika thanks for your opinion. I have heard that they HAVE to be in pairs. But studies have shown that that is a myth I am home 2047 I dont go to school and I will spend all day with the bird. i'm getting one bird and one bird only. I dont have the right amount of space for two. Thanks for letting me know but I think my bird will be just fine with me being its companion. So my bird will most definitely NOT be alone. And will be sharing a healthy and active life along with me. The maximum time I spent away from my house is 2 hours a WEEK so every day all day my bird will be by my side and having a very social life with me.

      @rika6108 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@zivacosta7780 Okay, I am sorry to hear this. I know I can‘t do anything about your decision, but just so you know: no matter how much time a human spends with their parrot, he/she will never be a partner for the bird. Parrots are flock animals and crave physical contact to other parrots, starting with grooming and kissing and ending with a life-long partnership. A human will never be able to take that place, I‘m sorry you‘ve been told this!
      I hope for you and your bird that you consider adopting a second one. No matter how little space there is, it‘s not worth the pain for either of you. At least get an older bird that might already be alone, because if you accidentally imprint a bird to think that you are his partner, they will not want to leave your side even if you just go to the bathroom or want to sleep.
      Trust me, there‘s nothing more beautiful than seeing two parrots loving each other! :)

    I’ve got four in the same cage. I’ve had one for a year and I just got the other 3 , I’m on day five with them and 2 of them will stand on my hand and eat and they all will eat out of my hand. Day 1 and 2 they would all freak out if I opened the door and they wouldn’t accept millet yet but I just sat for hours outside of the cage. Day 3 I forgot to shut the door and my older budgie snuck in. Then when I went to lure her out with millet and she ate it one of the other ones noticed it and started eating too. Then day 4 I tested it again and they all 4 were eating out of my hand. Now today they are all in the same cage and they even came out on the playstand to eat millet. It’s exciting to be going this fast. Two of them are flighted and two of them are clipped. Im ready for them to all be flighted lol. Anyways thanks so much for the content. I have been watching your channel since before you got blueberry and it’s helped me so much!

    I recently got a second lovebird and although she's not fully tamed yet, it's going very well! The taming process is going very fast since the new one just copies the behaviour of the old one. Where he goes she goes😂 for example, yesterday the old bird flew om my shoulder and the new one followed! The same with diet. It took me about a year to get the old one to eat pellets, but the new one ate it from day one, because she saw the old one was eating it too!
    It's amazing to see how she observes and copies the behaviours🙂

    I got two parrotlets (about 6 months old). they were already semi-bonded from the breeder and I always train them together. Two days after they were with me, they were sitting on my finger. They have a huge cage and were never clipped. It is definitely possible, you just need to pay attention to their body language and respect their boundaries. Smaller birds seem to be more curageous when having a buddy.

    I Definitely agree that one bird will be braver than the other. When I was taming my 2 budgies lemon, was the first one to each out of my hand, the first to come out of his cage, the first to step up, the first out of those two to start chewing on toys, and the first out of the two to be recalled trained.

    This kills me though! I feel so bad choosing one over the other. Haha 😂 but I get it. My other struggle is that my conure is SO mean to me after giving ANY attention to the tiels I'm trying to work with. Its tough because I've worked so hard with the biting with him. It's like a never ending battle 🤣
    Edit* (since I commented before the end of the video lol) that is EXACTLY how my conure's biting has improved as much as it has. When he was first given to me, no one could hold him without him biting, and now I can at least hold him and he is very sweet! (Only when he's jealous and some other triggers I'm working on catching does he bite) but it literally was the NON REACTION tactic! Which is INCREDIBLY difficult when they remove a piece of your flesh and you have to shrug it off as though you didn't actually need that part of your body so you don't reward them with a big reaction. It sucked but it was the best way. That and not putting him in the cage either because then he would know that a bite would mean he would get to go back to his room if he wanted so that was a reward. Instead I'd pretend it didn't bother me, not let him see the blood, and maybe turn away and ignore him/not give him attention for a couple of minutes. He has made stellar improvement. Proud parront 😂🥰

      The best indicator of a reputable rescue/breeder is if they put you under scrutiny and questioning as well. This indicates that they care about the quality of the home they give the bird to. For-profit sellers generally don't care as long as they get their profit.

    Yes! This is what I see in my cockatiels. The female though is faaar braver and the male will watch her to see if something is safe, he won’t do anything unless she does it first.

    I know this relates to an earlier post .. the one where sprouts were left by one of your birds. . according to Dr Gundry alfalfa sprouts are highly toxic and he doesn't recommend that his patients eat them... Unlike other micro greens which are highly nutritious. Birds like a little of the alfalfa leaves but not the sprouts.

    Hi Jamieleigh! Ok, so I'm another one of the hair likers. The intensity of the color made me think of a question. Do any of your birds ever get weird if they don't recognize you or dave because of wearing a mask or one of your hair color changes? I shaved off a beard and was wearing sunglasses I had never worn around my bird and my eckie did a bit of head cocking and was backing up a bit in his cage until I spoke. I thought he'd had a stroke or something when he didn't recognize me.

    I have a question.. I have two budgies. One is pretty tame but the otherone isn't. I want them to fly around but if I let them they won't go back in the cage. Should I only let the tame budgie out untill the other is tame too? Or should I train more in the cage untill they are both tame?

    Hello,I'm a big fan from Germany and have a little problem with one of my budgies. I feed them millet from my hand to get them tame and one little lady started biting my fingers. At first it was more like trying to eat them but now she bites harder and harder... I don't wanna punish her for biting me because I don't want her to be afraid of me but I really wanna stop her from biting me. I don't know what to do.

    Do you have a video on bonding with a new bird when you already have one bird because I brought mine home and he is bonding with my other Bird, but she doesn’t want me to, and Interact with her that much. How do I bond with her do I separate them please help? I want her to bond with me first and i have had her about two weeks so i dont want to waste time?

    • @coool73
      @coool73 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi!! You’ve probably solved this by now so sorry for a late reply, but Id suggest separating them, the easiest way is probably to bring your new bird to another bird safe room just while you bond with them there. As long as your other bird can’t interfere, then it should be simpler. Good luck

    My personal Problem with this non-reaction thing is, that my two green cheek conures will confidently land on my arm when i lure them to it and then will start nipping at it and be so rough that they often times break my skin in the process. So as i understand it, they dont even intend to "bite" but rather just dont know how hard they should do it, as they are still babys. When i dont react in a big way, how can i show them, that their nipping is to rough?

  • @donew1thita11
    @donew1thita11 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks I really need to be able to move budgies from cage to another to prevent unwanted babies. But I don't want to keep on grabbing them with a towel to move them it's traumatizing for both parties. I will work on the one who is already less skiddish around me.

    Help!!!!!! I've got 2 lorikeets, just inherited, issues from abuse (accidental I think) 1 will come out of the cage, other won't but is now starting to with target training & treats BUT other bird keeps grabbing the stick!!!!!! If I try to work on just the outgoing one, then the one that won't leave the cage throws tantrums & screams & goes really hormonal about being ignored! So what do I do about this???? Any tips/ideas PLEASE?????
    More details if wanted, don't read if you don't want to, I went overboard writing,
    Worked ok to start with, could train the one out of the cage & then once he'd had enough, move on to the other one, target training to move around inside the cage, where the one out of the cage wasn't that interested, but the one out of the cage is getting more & more into training now & doesn't want to stop (will get bored, I'll move onto the other one & interest immediately perks back up & he's back into it again) & as I move the stick out of the cage with the other one, it's close enough to him to really grab his interest again.
    I'm doing step up training with the outside cage one, have managed to get one foot onto my hand, but he's REALLY resistant, despite coming close to me & being comfortable with my face & head right near him, going to take some time to get there I think & I really can't move him away or anything, he's too insecure for that. Second one will now stick her head out of the cage for the stick or treat, but that's being sabotaged by the other one! (is a tall thin cage that I have on it's side, with a side opening therefore at the top, that I leave open all the time, cause they were apart before too, so I want to let the boy escape, cause girl is really hormonal & cage territorial & throws huge tantrums, so boy climbs in & out at will, girl's just sticking head out with lots of encouragement & stick & treats).
    Anyway I'm feeling really stuck on what to do with the 2 of them, so if anyone has any tips I'd LOVE to hear them! Best I've come up with is sultanas for the boy outside the cage to try to occupy him while training the girl out, but it's working less & less, as soon as I speak, saying things like "touch" he hears & drops the sultana to come running over to get the stick & diluted golden syrup syringe & to be told "good girl". I also had to move where I store the stick & syringe, cause he found them & started touching the stick & then licking the syringe to get his reward - smart bird!

    Hi, videos are very informative. I bought a budgie , got pretty comfortable with me. But I just got a female and now the male doesn't want to interact with me. Even bites now when I reach in. We had an awesome bond and now all of a sudden the female took it all lol, is this behavior normal ? What advice would you have? Thank you!

    Hi, I've just adopted a yellow female kakariki from my neighbour. She has a habit of climbing on me and nipping at any exposed skin over and over. She seems to be enjoying the taste of skin. It really hurts and I'd like her to stop. Has anyone experienced anything like this? It's really strange behaviour.

    Hi I have two bird buddies who are housed together. One follows the other so there is one bird who is the brave one. For this reason I have always trained them together used them brave bird as the model student so to speak.
    When it comes to training can there share the same training stand or should they each have their own?
    As of now I they have their own perch and they seem to focus better when they have their own training perch.
