- Come along friends, as we begin this video on a cool July morning at Denver with Union Pacific's Big Boy, Number 4014!
The depot is buzzing with activity as the sun slowly rises onto the locomotive. Over 100 lucky passengers and Union Pacific dignitaries climb aboard for a prompt 7:10 am departure. Directly on que, the locomotive's thunderous whistle starts the magnificent adventure Northward towards the day's destination of Cheyenne, Wyoming. But before we can take to the high iron, we'll watch the steam crew thread the 525 ton locomotive and accompanying train across a vast array of trackage that wraps through the Denver skyline.
Due to circumstances unbeknownst to us at NVRRP, the train couldn't simply depart straight North out of Denver's Union Station. Instead, we will see the train proceed north to the former DRGW North Yard, West onto the Moffat Sub, and East across the Belt Line connection to the UP Greeley Sub. These moves will ad a substantial amount of time to the train's planned schedule, but it's a wonderful chance to view the massive locomotive at work, regardless. Rate. Comment. Subscribe. ENJOY!!! Im so glad they reunited 4014 and her original whistle for this run. Yes, Ed said it himself, that whistle 844 has worn simce 2012 is 4014's original she wore in service.
Technology then and now is unbelievable to me @ 65 years old. 4014 is the best show on wheells
I wish you would bring the big boy to Muskegon Michigan
👏Love seeing all the perspectives you captured‼️

Im still amazed how they were able to fit it through the catenary wires
Hello Jack . I live in the UK what are catenary wires ?
@@johndavey72 The cables that the electric trains are powered by. I’m pretty sure they have electric trains in the UK?? But I don’t know if the UK has trains since I don’t like leaving the USA.
@@jackchen7003 they do have trains just that they look different and have a different method of coupling
@@sovannanhem9709 are any of them electric?
@@jackchen7003 Hi Jack . Thankyou . We only have them in certain areas and none where l live . I think we call them overhead power lines and the arms that reach up pantographs.
I wish I could see it again this year, but the Northwest Tour was canceled. I live in California and Roseville, California was where it would be Displayed.
Hi Nick . Great camera work ! Don't know how you seem to know where "Big Boys " going before it does !!! Thanks a bunch .
Thx Nick Highball 4014
0:37 Wow, what a great guy we got here...
0:51 I just remembered something urgent, so I'm going home.
For the return trip to Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Is the shield on the side of 4015 at 2:07 supposed the be a reference to Big Boy 4015? I've never seen a shield like that before.
Yup. 4015 has been permanently assigned to the Steam Team as their road diesel, so they put a little steam tribute on it.
@@connorpack3735 That's awesome!😄 Thanks for the reply!
Is it just my imagination, or does it look like the train's consist has been "wrapped", (like the car guy's do), but in this case...to prevent oxidation of the paint ON these cars? Not a problem and I get it, (if so). Keep the livery alive!!!
Was 4014 really doing the pulling or was it in "neutral" and letting the diesel do all the work "behind the scenes"?
It was pulling, the diesels are there incase anything happens, and it can no longer pull.
The diesel 4015 is a backup / support cart, it provides clean electrical power and other essentials while "Big Boy" 4014 pulls the tonnage.
Nick, did it ever seem like the diesel was doing much of the work?
at 6:40 you can hear her bark, she is working.
Will 844 see as much service as 4014?
Don't worry, the team won't forget about it, but it will need PTC before it runs again.
@@davidng2336 thanks. Always wanted to see it. Oh I wonder will the UP take back the 3985 and 5511? Will they operate them? Sorry I have so many questions
@@texasandpacific610 they have the option, but the chances of that happening aren’t that likely. 5511 is especially not good for high speed excursion service.
To the original question in this thread, 844 has technically seen far more service then the 4014 has, it’s just that Uncle Pete’s gonna milk the publicity of the 4014 as much as they can before using the 844 more frequently again.
