I'm still floored that the whistle 844 has worn for so long is actually 4014's original whistle she wore in service. Kinda makes sense now as to why that whistle has such a roar to it like the T-Rex from jurassic Park. (The one at the end after killing the velociraptors.)
Whenever they put that whistle on 844 back in 2011 I believe, Ed made a statement saying it was a Big Boy whistle but didn’t specify which one it was. Now we know. I hope 844 gets her whistle back.
@@johnathanhardin152 If you’re talking about the whistle the 844 wore from at least the 80’s to up until the end of 2010 or 2011 where it was replaced by the 4014’s whistle, from what I’ve heard, that whistle is far to damaged and worn out beyond repair to be used again. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Heritage Crew put the whistle the 4014 wore from 2019 to 2021 on the 844, given that that whistle apparently; again, from what I’ve heard; never saw any usage in the days of steam and is merely an extra whistle that was placed on the 4014 upon donation in the 60’s. I honestly hope that’s what they do, that whistle’s got the right amount of smoothness and baritone to it that just fits the 844 wonderfully.
Alright guys, someone needs to clue me in on things lol, which whistle is which and where'd they get them from, and where's 4014s whistle from the 1940s at right now?
@@ilikeguitars3511 she is wearing her original whistle as we speak. 844 has worn it since around 2012. The whistle 4014 had on in 2019 was a new old stock whistle that had probably never seen steam until 4014 was fired up.
SO glad they put her original whistle back on her for this trip. Still cant believe Ed has just casually been having 844 wear the whistle of the 4000 UP planned to buy back.
Man Ed is always in a good mood to help someone out especially when it comes to using the big boy. And this proposal became so popular on social media. I wonder if he would let another couple propose on the big boy or the living legend during depot days
I'm glad to see that the UP decided to put locomotive 4015 in the 4014 consist. On a different channel 4015 was shown languishing on a siding out in the middle of no where, last year. It's to bad that diesel loco 4014 was renumbered. By adding a "D" to its number, it could have been in 4015's place instead. Oh well. ;-)
Intriguingly, in Nick Valdez's Union Pacific Break-in Run videos, you can see that 4015 used to have gray paint on the trucks and on the top of the nose. Here, however, 4015's trucks wear aluminum paint, while 4015's nose wears green paint.
I have been blessed to be the conductor on this and several other trips from Cheyenne to Denver and back to Cheyenne. She is absolutely beautiful and always a great ride. Thanks Nick for the excellent filming and work that you and your dad have done many times.
4014 now runs again despite COVID. Now it relies on oil for power not coal like the old days. the steamer sat there all sad at the RailGiants museum. Then Union Pacific Railroad brought her back to steam and COVID couldn't stop 4014. Roll on 4014
When and why did they modify 4014’s headlight to dual sealed beams? Not complaining. Just wondering but it’s cool because the newer sealed beam lamps are mounted within the original housing.
I wish you would bring the big boy to Michigan we have railroad tracks through Grand Haven into Muskegon we all would love to see the big boy even Grand rapids would love to see the big boy especially me
Closest she ever came was to New Orleans back in 2021, I rode that excursion. New Orleans is the farthest southeast that UP rails go. That’s the closest 4014 ever came to my home town in Florida.
I never knew they switched whistles around I always assumed they had their original whistles. Especially since the Big Boys and the 800s both used Hancock longbell 3 chimes

@@justahillbilly7777 true, plus 4014s whistle from 2019 - 2021 does actually sound very similar to 844s 80s/90s whistle.

great fopotage Nick thanks
It's nice that Cheyenne is basically a day trip.
Big Boy #4014 is the most beautiful train ever. Love it
The Steam King is a show wherever he goes. :)

Great series of videos Nick. The last part of this one catching 4014 being put to bed was a great catch. Thanks for doing and sharing.
An absolute awesome piece of machinery!
If there's a more perfect video of 4014, (and other Steam Loco's), I'd REALLY like to see 'em. This is "perfection" personified !!!
5:50 that's so romantic
6:02 AQUILA (God) BE PRAAAAAAIIISED!!
14:05 I remembered that poster on that car when 844 used it in its 2012 run
i liked the New whistle, looks more intense in big boy
That whistle used to be on UP 844. But it's the original 4014 whistle.
Thanks Nick. Great footage aalways !
3:58 Is it just me, or does 4014's whistle kinda sound like UP 844's whistle?
It does but 844's whistle pitch is slightly different and....the whistles are made by the same company.
That’s because 844’s whistle was 4014’s original service whistle. They swapped the whistles earlier this year
@@Fratt4008 wat why would they do that? The one they had on there was soooo good.

Anyone notice the whistle sounds like the one on 844
It’s 4014’s original whistle. 844 wore it from 2011 to 2019 ish from what I heard.

17:06 844 Cameo. Also, are the passenger cars in front if her the ones going with 3985 to Silvis?
Is 3985 still in the roundhouse?
@@transportationproductions1794 most likely, if it wasn't, it most likely would've been documented or shown on video for its move to Silvis by now.
@@transportationproductions1794 Yes, but it will be moving soon.
Based on what I saw, if you are referring to the cars at the end of the video, yes, those should be the ones that were donated to Silvis.
Nice footage, but you seem to have some periodic sound quality issues.
Уникальный паровоз!!!!!!😊❤
say it in engilish
why does it have 3985's whistle
Because 3985 was donated to a non profit group for display, preservation, and/or for them to use.
both 3985 and 4014 uses the same hancock 3 chime whistle
Are they going to do that every year?
Saw myself at carr 💀💀
