After much research a 2008 BMW R1200 GS Adventure suddenly appeared in my garage, since I prefer off-road riding on Colorado dirt/gravel roads, I love the lighter weight, fewer electronics, and she starts with a key. I have no wireless devices in my home, and do not have a cellphone. After renting a 2018 BMW GS the keyless issue and extra weight were not things I wanted in my life. Great video, enjoy the new bike!
So yeah I know this comes very late in the game as you posted this video already about a year ago... But. I just wanted to let you know that this particular video was what made me choose the GS over the KTM. With the keyless start/gas cap which really is a very convenient feature! :) Great videos man!

Thanks for the great review Cal Moto. The GS has the reputation as The Best all round adventure bike world wide for one simple reason. It is. Ducati may be faster but you have to sell a kidney for servicing costs. HD are great but don't try to take a turn or corner at any speed. The GS won't win a beauty contest but just ride one and find out why they are The Best all round bike any where on the planet. Definitely worth the $$$.
You would know best yourself, but it looked like you pulled the clutch in before the successful start-up? It will probably start on the side-stand without the clutch pulled in, but not with it up - to give the starter motor an easier time?
February 2023 First time ever saw your tube. I was the caretaker for a 2014 GS. It was suppose to have had a lighter crank and flywheel. it reved quicker ? maybe ? Thanks !!!!!
Currently have a 1150GS and I am looking to upgrade. Still not sure if it will be a '16 LC GS or the last '10 aircooled model. I prefer the looks and gadgets on the LC but I also enjoy the simpleness of the aircooled one. And I hate those new indicator switches. The bulky button design was way better imo.
Wow, and I thought I still ride aggressively around the cages. At 56 I ride a little more respectful now around the cages to not give all the 2 wheelers such a bad image. Food for the thought.
The BMW flat twins are akin to rear engine Porsches. A design, originally a fabulous concept, and then steadily over engineered to keep relevant in a modern world. Case in point, if you have to water cool those opposed cylinders already jutting out in the wind, there is something wrong. Same in Porsches, if you have to put monster tyres in the bulbous back to keep it from changing ends in a turn, its rethink time. Having said that, A flat twin, 600 cc per side is awesome. As is a Porsche. Wow. I would want one of each any day. Finally, Porsche with its V-10 GT and BMW with its latest in line motorcycles have proven they can build world class machines anytime. Except for the criminal traffic violation, I enjoyed the video.
Hey Calmoto I'm seriously considering buying the 2014 model. You mentioned something about stalling issues with the current model. I wonder if the problem is now solved with the heavier crankshaft in the 2015 model? And, would appreciate your comment on common problems with the gs model known to you. Thanks in advance. Like your review so much.
The heavier crankshaft was introduced solely to reduce stalling...it does exactly that. As far as common problems, I haven't seen any. Every single person I've spoken with that has a 2013, 2014, & 2015 GS is thrilled with the bike. My preference would be for a 2013 or 2014 since stalling is not an issue for me. I prefer the quicker motor. That said, a 2015 GS would not be much of a compromise.
I did notice in the first week that my 2014 model had a propensity to stall in 1st gear, but that was only after a cold start. Not once has it stalled while warm. One month later it never stalls, because you learn how the clutch and engine works. It's kind of like getting to know your bike more intimately. I had actually forgotten about the issue until I read your comment. Ride safe.

+CHASEnA's The GS now has the heavier crank shaft that the GSA has. I think the 50 lb weight advantage of the GS is why it stills responds well. The 2013 & 2014 GS were snappier.
Ease of stalling off road, not on. Wet clutch won't prevent a stall caused by hitting a log (honestly, if you used it right, you could do everything with the dry clutch that you can with the wet, it's just a packaging thing).
Yeah....just to let you know....it's a totally different bike!...I know this is a old vid, but the engine is brand new, being lower but longer, the trans is all new....the clutch is now a multi plate wet design and the the exh and drive shaft are now on different sides...so yeah they changed a few things :)
Hey CalMoto I am looking at the GS and GSA and considering the lowered suspension. Have you every ridden either of those bikes and what are the compromises on pavement. Thanks
2015's with lowered suspensions The lowered GS goes drops from 7.7 high to 6.5 high. The lowered GSA goes from 8.5 to 6.5.(Similar to the RT) I believe they use the same shorter shocks and center stand on both. My question is: Does this lowered adversely affect the bikes handling on pavement ? Which is 90% of my riding. I am tall enough inseam wise to get my feet down even on the GSA, but I ride two up quite often and throwing my wife up high (had a 2001 GS) can get dicey when you are at a standstill ( with arthritic hip joints ) Thanks
Todd Claussen I believe that most of the height reduction is achieved through a lower sub-frame so the performance of the bike should remain unchanged from the standard. You still have ESA available to you; however, the center stand is bit more difficult to use. You should definitely get one:)

If I install Akrapovic titanium headers for the R1200GS LC and instead of using the given Akrapovic exhaust for that model, i would like to customize the mount and fit in a shorty Akrapovic exhaust meant for the S1000RR. Would there be any damage to the engine? Thank you.
I think I'd like one of these ... probably the R1200GSA tbh ... but I still think it's inexcusable for these bikes that they let the cylinder heads jut out like that without proper protection. Everyone's first mod seems to be buying engine cages or some kind of protection. Amazing how detail-oriented BMW can be when they want to, and how oblivious they can be at other times.

I hear there's a growing theft problem with the keyless entry equipped vehicles. The bad guys have "black boxes" that hack the signal on your key fob, and then amplify its signal so the bike can be started with the fob far away like inside your home or workplace, and your ride just get ridden away. Anybody else hear about this ?
+natserog Yes: I rode a friend's one for a bit less distance than that (450 miles in a day, but across slower roads) and it was great. I'll be getting mine next year.
I'm ready to buy this one in 2 week more, I tryed tht 1190 R by KTM but is very aggresive bike and too truble to long travels. I also tyyed the Triumph 1200 but also very trumbling bike, finally tryed the Ducati Multistrada is a great bike but very delicated bike, what you think about it ?? I'm between the BMW R 1200 Gs 2015 and the new Ducati Multistrada. Your opinion before make a mistake in the decition
I'm not a big Ducati fan; that said, how can you go wrong with either machine? Will this be your only bike?....Go GS. Do you value comfort?.....GS. Is resale value key?...GS. Do you want a bike that will rip your head off?....Multi. Go ride them all again before you buy.
After researching both bikes, the Ducati Multistrada and the BMW R12OOGS, I decided on the Ducati. Last fall, my mind was set on the GS. Cruise Control is a 'must have' for me and I assumed at the time that the 2015 MTS would not have CC. I really liked what I saw and heard of the Duc. However, the issue of no Cruise Control was a Deal Breaker for me! So... the GS it would be. I frequented a BMW R1200GS forum and discovered that there are a plethora of mechanical issues. One of the major issues with the 2014 GS is water pump leaks. So, okay... get it fixed under warranty right??? Not! BMW has no parts available. Your baby is laid up for 3 months! I have heard of premature Final Drive failues. However, to be fair to BMW, that could be due to abuse. Still, I'm not impressed. Then, I read horror stories of BMW both at Dealership and the Motherland level. One story was of a guy who purchased a Lemon and BMW snubbed him. He took BMW to court and won his case... Overall, I had no confidence in BMW at any level. I was growing very concerned about my decision to purchase a 2015 R1200GS. I then learned that the 2015 Ducati Multistrada had factory Cruise Control. I researched the Multistrada a bit more, namely the 2015 model year... IMO the Ducati is the nicer of the two machines. Getting back to mechanical issues, I read of a guy who had an out of warranty MTS with a pin-hole in one of the heads. One phone call to Italy is all it took for the entire repair to be paid for by Ducati... 'Out-of-Warranty'!!!! Now that's what I like... a company that stands behind their product! I realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence... but the scales of justuce were tipping in Ducati's favour... Needless to say, I put a deposit down on a 2015 MTS 1200 S.
Don't believe everything you read on the interweb; talk to real owners. In addition, if you haven't read up on the new BMW S1000XR, give it a go. That said, who could complain about getting a Multi?
Cal Moto You're right my man... we have to take the Web with a grain of salt at times. It's all hear say. I wasn't intending to flame BMW, I was just telling my story and stating 'my' findings. I'm sure all bike manufacturers have their share of problems. Including Ducati... I demoed the 2014 GS and GSA last fall. Awesome bikes! Great handling and well balanced. Can't say a bad thing about the actual ride. I had it down to the GS and the MTS. When I learned of the factory Cruise Control on the '15 MTS, the deal was done. BTW, your videos are awesome! I like the fact that you're not afraid to 'give it'... ;)
I'd have to go with the KTM because it's just nastier. The BMW is almost too refined for my taste; plus, I don't mind saving $3+k. That's just me, you should ride both before buying.
Eirik Børve I'm a huge fan of the 800 triple; it is a fantastic "one bike does all". If I were to seriously shop for one, I would look for a new 2014 model and get a great price. The BMW & KTM are in a different category and much more expensive, powerful, and technologically advanced. If you want the best, and $ is no object, get the GS. It's the most comfortable, and will retain the most value. If you want the best with some wasabi on top, get the 1190.
"Why is is not working?" Well, it was in 2nd gear and then 3rd? "Why can't I find neutral"? Because you need to shift it to N? The remote is too far? What does the remote have to do with being on (N)eutral? Did you notice that when you pressed the clutch it turned on immediately, even in 2nd? That how a modern bike works...will never turn on if not in (N)eutral?
@@paulaus Cal Moto passed away after a badass baller fight with cancer on 12/28/18. He outlived his death date by over two years, of course. He was a one and only.
A friend of mine works for BMW. He will not buy one and in fact swears by his Yamaha FJR. He made his point all too well by turning up on a 2014 R1200GS with about 10,000 Miles on it that sounded like somebody had left a tool kit in the rocker covers. OK, it was a demo machine and may have had a hard life. But still, It was shocking. Little things matter, and some things not so little. What the hell is with putting a horn on a 27,000 Dollar bike ( European full option bike, 22,000 Euro with GPS) that the average Pizza delivery boy would be embarrassed to use? What is with them rotting at the first sign of getting wet? Many failures that you can almost set your watch by. Major failures that simply would NOT be acceptable if it were a car. Why on earth do we accept final drive replacement costs at under 30,000 Miles? Clutches at under 30,000 Miles? Fuel gauge failures that BMW wash their hands of despite knowing it's going to happen? It would be COMPLETELY unacceptable if your BMW five series needed repairs like this at under 30,000 miles and yet BMW Motorrad get away with this. Another friend has given up on BMW. He used to ride an R1150RT. That had it's issues but he could live with them. He replaced it with a new R1200RT and it simply never stopped having issues! Final straw for him was (big surprise) a new final drive and clutch at under 30,000 Miles and a huge bill BMW were not interested in helping with. These are not haters, those jealous of people who can fork out serious money for these machines. These are people who bought them. My own recent experience was running out of fuel on a 2010 RT because of the well publicised fuel tank strip issue and when I approached BMW for some sort of help with an issue they know was caused by sub-standard parts, they were not interested. All that said, I ride BMW. A K1300GT that has a clutch like an on-off switch and a gearbox that clunks as only BMW seem to be able to manage. Numerous recalls but to BMW's credit, nothing that has caused the bike to break down and all carried out at servicing and at no cost to me. Despite it's imperfections, I love that bike's engine! Thing is, it's only done 8000 Miles. Do I trust it to not eat me out of house and home now it's 5 years old and if I pile another 20,000 Miles on it? No, I don't. What I need is a boring Pan European. :-(
Mike Breen Totally agree…BMW legendary reliability is just that….a legend! With what they charge for their bikes they should be bullet proof. How they treat people who have documented common problems out of warranty seems terrible and rubs salt into the wounds. KTM, lighter, more powerful and less expensive. I am also not a hater and have considered a BMW on occasion but always baulked at all the horror stories from real people including people who have sold them.
I can see now why so many other road users are peeved with motorcyclists. This test ride just sent the message out that bike riders can do what they want on the street and are oblivious to others. Also no test of the bike on gravel?

What a fun bike. I took a test ride last weekend and fell in love with it. Not sure the one I rode had the shift assist you mentioned.
Shift assist is an option that is easily retro fitted if the bike doesn't have it already. Fun stuff!

The lowered GS goes drops from 7.7 high to 6.5 high. The lowered GSA goes from 8.5 to 6.5.(Similar to the RT) I believe they use the same shorter shocks and center stand on both. My question is: Does this lowered adversely affect the bikes handling on pavement ? Which is 90% of my riding.
I am tall enough inseam wise to get my feet down even on the GSA, but I ride two up quite often and throwing my wife up high (had a 2001 GS) can get dicey when you are at a standstill ( with arthritic hip joints )

I believe that most of the height reduction is achieved through a lower sub-frame so the performance of the bike should remain unchanged from the standard. You still have ESA available to you; however, the center stand is bit more difficult to use. You should definitely get one:)
Thank you for the post. I would to ask a question, it may be a stupid one as i dont know about motorcycles as you do. If I install Akrapovic titanium headers for the R1200GS LC and instead of using the given Akrapovic exhaust for that model, i would like to customize the mount and fit in a shorty Akrapovic exhaust meant for the S1000RR. Would there be any damage to the engine?

I think I'd like one of these ... probably the R1200GSA tbh ... but I still think it's inexcusable for these bikes that they let the cylinder heads jut out like that without proper protection. Everyone's first mod seems to be buying engine cages or some kind of protection. Amazing how detail-oriented BMW can be when they want to, and how oblivious they can be at other times.

I hear there's a growing theft problem with the keyless entry equipped vehicles. The bad guys have "black boxes" that hack the signal on your key fob, and then amplify its signal so the bike can be started with the fob far away like inside your home or workplace, and your ride just get ridden away. Anybody else hear about this ?

I'm ready to buy this one in 2 week more, I tryed tht 1190 R by KTM but is very aggresive bike and too truble to long travels. I also tyyed the Triumph 1200 but also very trumbling bike, finally tryed the Ducati Multistrada is a great bike but very delicated bike, what you think about it ?? I'm between the BMW R 1200 Gs 2015 and the new Ducati Multistrada. Your opinion before make a mistake in the decition
I'm not a big Ducati fan; that said, how can you go wrong with either machine? Will this be your only bike?....Go GS. Do you value comfort?.....GS. Is resale value key?...GS. Do you want a bike that will rip your head off?....Multi. Go ride them all again before you buy.

After researching both bikes, the Ducati Multistrada and the BMW R12OOGS, I decided on the Ducati. Last fall, my mind was set on the GS. Cruise Control is a 'must have' for me and I assumed at the time that the 2015 MTS would not have CC. I really liked what I saw and heard of the Duc. However, the issue of no Cruise Control was a Deal Breaker for me! So... the GS it would be. I frequented a BMW R1200GS forum and discovered that there are a plethora of mechanical issues. One of the major issues with the 2014 GS is water pump leaks. So, okay... get it fixed under warranty right??? Not! BMW has no parts available. Your baby is laid up for 3 months! I have heard of premature Final Drive failues. However, to be fair to BMW, that could be due to abuse. Still, I'm not impressed. Then, I read horror stories of BMW both at Dealership and the Motherland level. One story was of a guy who purchased a Lemon and BMW snubbed him. He took BMW to court and won his case... Overall, I had no confidence in BMW at any level. I was growing very concerned about my decision to purchase a 2015 R1200GS. I then learned that the 2015 Ducati Multistrada had factory Cruise Control. I researched the Multistrada a bit more, namely the 2015 model year... IMO the Ducati is the nicer of the two machines. Getting back to mechanical issues, I read of a guy who had an out of warranty MTS with a pin-hole in one of the heads. One phone call to Italy is all it took for the entire repair to be paid for by Ducati... 'Out-of-Warranty'!!!! Now that's what I like... a company that stands behind their product! I realize that the grass is not always greener on the other side of the fence... but the scales of justuce were tipping in Ducati's favour... Needless to say, I put a deposit down on a 2015 MTS 1200 S.
Don't believe everything you read on the interweb; talk to real owners. In addition, if you haven't read up on the new BMW S1000XR, give it a go. That said, who could complain about getting a Multi?
Cal Moto You're right my man... we have to take the Web with a grain of salt at times. It's all hear say. I wasn't intending to flame BMW, I was just telling my story and stating 'my' findings. I'm sure all bike manufacturers have their share of problems. Including Ducati... I demoed the 2014 GS and GSA last fall. Awesome bikes! Great handling and well balanced. Can't say a bad thing about the actual ride. I had it down to the GS and the MTS. When I learned of the factory Cruise Control on the '15 MTS, the deal was done. BTW, your videos are awesome! I like the fact that you're not afraid to 'give it'... ;)

Keyless starting is pretty much pointless IMO. You still need to get your key out to open the gas tank or getting in and out of your panniers.
I 'eally love this adventure bike but I am only 5'5" tall I am not so sure if I can put just at least my toes on the ground while sitting on it.

I'd have to go with the KTM because it's just nastier. The BMW is almost too refined for my taste; plus, I don't mind saving $3+k. That's just me, you should ride both before buying.
Cal Moto I did, but I'm still split down the middle :) if you threw the 800xc/xr into the mix? (I haven't (and won't be) tested the 800.)

I'm a huge fan of the 800 triple; it is a fantastic "one bike does all". If I were to seriously shop for one, I would look for a new 2014 model and get a great price. The BMW & KTM are in a different category and much more expensive, powerful, and technologically advanced. If you want the best, and $ is no object, get the GS. It's the most comfortable, and will retain the most value. If you want the best with some wasabi on top, get the 1190.
I think he means heavier flywheel, not crankshaft. Flywheel is 2.1 lbs heavier this year.

The remote is too far? What does the remote have to do with being on (N)eutral? Did you notice that when you pressed the clutch it turned on immediately, even in 2nd? That how a modern bike works...will never turn on if not in (N)eutral?

All of the above; you can't make a poor choice here.
A friend of mine works for BMW. He will not buy one and in fact swears by his Yamaha FJR. He made his point all too well by turning up on a 2014 R1200GS with about 10,000 Miles on it that sounded like somebody had left a tool kit in the rocker covers. OK, it was a demo machine and may have had a hard life. But still, It was shocking.
Little things matter, and some things not so little. What the hell is with putting a horn on a 27,000 Dollar bike ( European full option bike, 22,000 Euro with GPS) that the average Pizza delivery boy would be embarrassed to use? What is with them rotting at the first sign of getting wet?
Many failures that you can almost set your watch by. Major failures that simply would NOT be acceptable if it were a car. Why on earth do we accept final drive replacement costs at under 30,000 Miles? Clutches at under 30,000 Miles? Fuel gauge failures that BMW wash their hands of despite knowing it's going to happen? It would be COMPLETELY unacceptable if your BMW five series needed repairs like this at under 30,000 miles and yet BMW Motorrad get away with this.
Another friend has given up on BMW. He used to ride an R1150RT. That had it's issues but he could live with them. He replaced it with a new R1200RT and it simply never stopped having issues! Final straw for him was (big surprise) a new final drive and clutch at under 30,000 Miles and a huge bill BMW were not interested in helping with.
These are not haters, those jealous of people who can fork out serious money for these machines. These are people who bought them. My own recent experience was running out of fuel on a 2010 RT because of the well publicised fuel tank strip issue and when I approached BMW for some sort of help with an issue they know was caused by sub-standard parts, they were not interested.
All that said, I ride BMW. A K1300GT that has a clutch like an on-off switch and a gearbox that clunks as only BMW seem to be able to manage. Numerous recalls but to BMW's credit, nothing that has caused the bike to break down and all carried out at servicing and at no cost to me. Despite it's imperfections, I love that bike's engine! Thing is, it's only done 8000 Miles. Do I trust it to not eat me out of house and home now it's 5 years old and if I pile another 20,000 Miles on it?

Mike Breen Totally agree…BMW legendary reliability is just that….a legend! With what they charge for their bikes they should be bullet proof. How they treat people who have documented common problems out of warranty seems terrible and rubs salt into the wounds. KTM, lighter, more powerful and less expensive. I am also not a hater and have considered a BMW on occasion but always baulked at all the horror stories from real people including people who have sold them.
