To other modders: Here are some instructions for the second half of the tutorial. If you are simply generating a worldspace LOD (Level of Detail) for testing, and do not need to move files around because you already did so, these instructions may be helpful so that you don't have to scan through the video (I've also included some timestamps in case you instead want to use this to help navigate the video). Change the following in the Creation Kit under World > World Spaces and your map specifically: HD LOD Diffuse: data\textures\landscape\mountains\mountainslab02.dds HD LOD Normal: data\textures\landscape\mountains\mountainslab02_n.dds Click "OK," then save the plugin. In the third-party program, Oscape (15:50): Select Plugin Click Fill Select Worldspace Check "feature-map" and "surface-map" Click "Browse" to choose extraction folder (doesn't really matter where) Give the file the same name as your worldspace Extract Wait... (16:39) Input Sea Level (this seems to be fixed in the current version--I didn't have to do this) Under the "Generator" tab: Select level of detail (in "Target of max. resolution"). "(1/1 of 1000 per tile)" is recommended. Ensure check boxes are correct (see 17:45 for details) Un-check PNG textures Select desired resolution (1024x1024 is recommended) Check "Colors" Ensure boxes are correct (see 18:26), select resolution, un-check "PNG" Click "Generate" Wait a long time (at least for my 4096x4096 world). Under the "Installer" tab, after generation (19:23): Click "Generate" under the "LOD Settings" heading Check all four levels of "Install" Leave all options as default (see 19:56 for details) Ensure the path at the bottom points to Skyrim Data folder Click "Install" Wait... Ta-da! Now your LOD should be complete. Load the game up to test it. If it didn't work... You should probably watch the video instead of reading my short-hand.

Thanks a ton for creating and sharing this tutorial. I've finally muddied my way through making a heightmap, eroding it with GeoControl, and converting it into an ESP file with Tesannwyn (it took me about a week to sort through tutorials and figure out a method that worked for me), but this tutorial is totally clear and straightforward. It's a lengthy process, but it's easy to follow. I appreciate it very much--this video is a great resource. Since I'm in the process of fine-tuning my worldspace, I expect I'll be going through this process several times, so I took some notes to make this a little bit quicker for myself each time (even though I expect that after a couple more run-throughs, I'll have it memorized). I figured I'd share these notes with others in case they find them useful. Feel free to put them in your description if you like. I'll post them as another comment so that they are easier to access. Thanks again for sharing this!
You are a freaking lifesaver like 5 years later! Awesome video! I can finally create functioning worldspaces and its easier than i thought. I was able to do this in fallout 4 and new vegas too! THANK YOU BRO... Congrats on 343 Industries
This needs to be updated for Skyrim SE. Anyone watching this vid please realize that you CANNOT use the same settings that are listed in this video. It took me days to figure this out.
Thank you very much for this tutorial! I have just started tooling around with the creation kit a few weeks ago, and I would have never figured this out on my own. Followed the instructions, everything worked perfectly. Great stuff.
This video did help me a lot but it also confused me quite a lot. I don't know if I missed it some where but you need to explain it if you didn't already that this video does not cover how to generate lod with any of the DLC's. If you use any resources from the DLC's you also need to get the LOD files from the High Res Texture packs 1-3 depending on what textures your using.
This was really helpful. Thank you! I'm making a spring overhaul and only want to retexture the LOD landscape. I had partial success with the creation kit but had lots of missing areas (they were black). Going to give it a try with OScape now.
! READ THIS, IT WILL HELP ! I hope this helps many people. The error with object LOD is to be easily solved. 1. Go to >Steam >Steam Apps >Common >Source. Then copy the TGAtextures file. 2. Paste it to >Steam >Steam Apps >Common >Skyrim >Data >Textures >Terrain > Your worldspace name >Objects That should do it. Rate it up so everyone can see this, and have a quick solution for the error.

hi there Alexander.. i have a small problem. when i generate LOD for objects and trees i loose my Landscape LOD, and when i generate Landscape LOD through Oscape i loose the objects and trees LOD... why is this happening?
I know this is 2 years late but i recently had this problem and found a fix. (after redrawing the whole missing landscape again >. Regions 2. Right click and 'create a new region' call it something like 'MyRegion' and draw a square around your space using the little x ( make sure to get it all in e.g: [16,0. 16,0. 16,16. 16, -16] depends on the size of your space) 3. Then use the Creation Kit world> world LOD to create the LOD for your distance terrain/water. This should prevent any loss of landscape. I haven't used Oscape for this so not sure if it'll work with that too.
Thanks for the tutorial. But I have a estetical problem. All the Lod landscape look like dirt even if is a forest or a grass terrain. How do can have a colores lod with the grass and, snow and forest textures?
Kia ora Thanks for a great and very helpful video mate. May I ask what you used to do your region generation CK seems busted? Kia ora Thanks for this it was a great help. You haven't by chance done on on region generation have you, seems to be a trick to get it looking natural and random rather than neat rows which is totally unnatural.
hi alex, i recently finish to play Falskaar. it was wonderfull. excelent video tutorial. i taked note of all, a'll try to make a worldspace, and i found this problem (can't see the distant terrain). something was telling me that the way to fix is with world LOD but i didn't know how this worked it . now i do Know! thanks!!. Maybe i will have question in the process. i hope you'll can answerme.
Thanks for this great tutorial, It was very clear, organized, detailed and not too fast! Do you think it is possible to regenerate only the Object LOD from original tamriel using your method? I'd like to add LOD to my castle which uses vanilla models only. Thanks again!
Assuming you are in SSE, yeah, read this article. SSELODGen is for the trees and objects. Just read it forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5386975-lod-for-worldspace-help/
Here's an easier way on doing the batch file. You could have it loop through the whole directory and only look for the dds file like so. "for /R %%i IN (*.dds) do nconvert.exe -out tga %%i pause" "
Can you please do a Tutorial on HeightMap editing and world editing like how to edit your heightmap in the creation kit or even trying to get your custom heightmap into the creation kit please and thank you :)
Well i dont really know how to size it either, im not yet familiar with the map "blockers" that say "you cannot go that way" But 1024x1024 is quite big already, and it takes like 2 weeks to even get the outlook done (if you create it about 7h/day).
I have exactly done all things that you shown in your video in a small worldspace of skyrim special edition (about 10x10 cells) for test before create my custom world, but the landscape is still hidden at distance while the objects are visible but in the void. Have you some advice?
Not sure how often you check this, but I'm creating a similar-sized and detailed worldspace. My problem is that I've got to place a few thousand trees, and it's taking FOREVER! How did you do this?
i have encountered a problem. after i generated the lod through oscape and installed it i went in game just like you; my worldspace did not have any sea or land lod, just trees and objects. i figured the issue was with the installation, since i cannot find any of the files that were generated anywhere inside my skyrim/data folder. i wonder if i can install them manually and manage to fix it that way but i honestly don't know what exactly to do.
Great tutorial, but I've got an error which prevents me creating LOD. When I got to the stage where you are supposed to see your map in the window, I just had a black area with some grey in the background. I assumed this was because I didn't use a heightmap (The area isn't that large, so I figured it wouldn't need one). I thought nothing of it but when I was generating the LOD in Oscape I get an error saying something like "too many triangles" which makes the generation stop and not complete.
when i manually make the .LOD file at the start and then generate the static objects and tree in the CK i can see the mountains in the distance, yet the ground is a light purple/pink or just plain black. even when there is a hill/mountain it just shows flat land. then if i use oscape to generate the .lod file i can see the land just find but, the ground doesnt show any textures and my lod mounains are gone. i have two pictures to compare the differences
Thanks for the tutorial it has been a huge help! However when I regenerate the LOD for my worldspace the land LOD doesn't work. I made sure to run Oscape again and followed your steps for regenerating LOD. When I redo the entire process of the video my land LOD and everything else work but I'd rather not have to keep going over this entire process to regenerate. Any ideas?
I am completely confused right now. I followed everything in the tutorial by the book, everything works fine until i try to do the land LOD with oscape. the trees and static objects work fine, but if i try to do the land LOD, it doesnt show up. and if i do exactly the same thing you did but also check generate in the LOD settings, ingame all the LOD i previously had goes away and the land LOD just becomes random grey zig zags and lines in random spots in my world. Anyone know the problem?
I'm building an island on the Creation Kit. Is there any way to auto-generate NavMesh which actually works? I tried using recast-based generation in the worldspace, but it turned out to be a nightmare of mesh blobs everywhere. Also, how can i delete all NavMesh in my worldspace, to start with a clean slate?
LOD diffuse texture '..\Source\TGATextures\dlc02\lod\dlc2telmithryn02lod.tga' and normal texture '..\Source\TGATextures\dlc02\lod\dlc2telmithryn02lod_n.tga' are not the same size (but should be). I get this everytime i generate objects. im assuming its because i use dlc objects. so if youre using dlc content im thinking maybe we have to extract the same things for them.
Edit, same extraction process, open up the dlc's , type lod in search bar, and extract to desktop. same clean up process. will convert and let you guys know if problems are solved.
matt squires Edit, ok it all works. just make sure after you have converted to tga that those textures are placed in the TGATexures files in their own dlc02 folder. Otherwise it wont work
My land generates properly, but I can't get the objects + trees to load.. Even tho I have VTB.. Done everything right in the tutorial no errors.. This is for Skyrim SE, instead of Oscape, I'm using sseLODGEN.
aren't you the guy who made falskaar as an application to bethesda softworks? you're pretty awesome :D may i ask you a bit about that job? do you work at home or in a studio? are you paid per hour or per finished section/model/texture/etc.? im trying to make a fallout themed mod in the europe of the 23rd century AD just for fun. if i manage to do a bit of this (if i dont give up it'll for sure take me 3 years minimum), would this be worthy of an application too? sounds pretty mad, but as im doing artworks anyways i decided to try to mod it too (i have modding experience in TW games)
Hello, i have a problem with LOD landscape. I have create a test worldspace and generate LOD for object, trees and landscape. The objects and trees are good visible with them colors from the distant, the land (plain, mountains...) is yes visible from the distant BUT without colors, all black, the colors are load when i enter in the area of 5x5 cells about. Opened the file of piece of land in NIFSKOPE it hasn't color but black, instead the other objects has them color. Can you help me? Show less
Hey there! LOD diffuse texture '..\Source\TGATextures\lod\MountainTrimAlphaLOD.tga' and normal texture '..\Source\TGATextures\lod\MountainTrimAlphaLOD_n.tga' are not the same size (but should be). I found out how to deal with the problem which occurred earlier. All you have to do is move the actual plugin from the /Date folder to the root folder of the game, and then do what you have been told in the video. Hope it will help somebody. But then another 2 problems appeared: 1. Terrain LOD's are too dark. (UPDATE: they are not actually dark, they totally black, and i using just one default texture.) 2. 13:28, tree LOD's generation , when i click on "Generation" button, my Creation Kit is crashing. UPDATE: 3. When i try to create textures in Creation Kit nothing happens. "0.0000 seconds of work for each texture" and folders where that textures should be are empty. Could you please give any advices about these problems?
I have problem with bsa file. File .dds and .btr for LOD my new world space are insert in bsa correctly, but "mymod".lod isn't insert in the "normal bsa" toghether Meshes file and "mymod".Ist for tree LOD not insert in the list of CK archive. Have you some advice?
I tried to google it, but didn't find anyhting, so i hope you can answer me: it generates the LODs for objects successfully, but the only thing that's missing, is my water LOD. it's on 0 height and when i accept it in Oscape, it doesn't fill out the area like it did in your vid. any ideas why it doesn't generate an ocean LOD?
Thanks a lot for tutorial. your method is definitely better than those that i used before. But the only glitch i have still is that landscape disappears on the big distances, althought mountains and trees maintain. Could you say plz how can i fix it?
+corrion1 Just so you know, FO4 uses pretty much the exact same tools and the exact same menus. There are some new questing and AI tools, there are a few more options when creating NPCs and some things have been simplified, but most things this tutorial should work perfectly with the FO4 CK.
then what should i do with new buildings that use new meshes and textures? does this method still work? it seems that this method works only for the world that has existing buildings and structures in vanila game.
what my problem is , is that i retextured a mountian to be red like a volcano in my new world space complety new mesh and dds file and if i follow your instructions will it load a red mountian far away?
Man, what a hassle. So is it best to wait until I have all my landscape and landscape objects pretty much placed before I do this? I would hate to have to do this every time I added new objects to my worldspace.
what name of the worldspace do i have to use ? The worldspace name of the editorId or the actual name ? Cuz im also getting the static object generation crash
Hi nice video but I have a probleme with the lod generation. I follow your video but at the end i get no landscape, only objects and trees, or a landscape all purple sometimes. If i chek the box to generate the lod Setting files in Oscape, then i have the distant landscape correct but no more distants objects and trees... Does anyone know what the problem could be ?
+Fredoric1001 As said in other comments here, the problem was my worldspace size, not square. Creating a square "region" solve the problem. Here a link which explain how to do it properly : forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/984374-lod-generation-problems/(scroll down to the post #10)
question lets say i wanted to create more trees around white run. how would i go on doing that consider you just said this tutorial is for costume land mass. how would i edit tameril so i can add lod to the trees.
Actually I've downloaded and installed it without problems, but when i attempt to open it an error pops up and says: "Could not find Follout3 directory. Follout's registry entry appear to be missing or incorrect.Install FOOM into fallout's base directory instead". NOW... i don't have follout on my pc. I'm trying to do this for skyrim.... any idea?? D:
Hello don't know if anyone will see this now but here it goes. does anyone know how to create your own LOD Terrain textures so as they also appear on the Objects Lod textures after Generation
Ho avuto qualche progresso. Ora, gli oggetti e gli alberi si vedono bene e con i propri colori anche dalla distanza, ma il terreno e le montagne mostrano le giuste sagome ma dalla distanza sono completamente in ombra. Qualcuno sa come risolvere questo difetto?
one quick question i have the LOD working but my ground textures only go so far then go black untill i get loser then i see the textures. i have a screenshot of what im talking about on my mod page on steam workshop. mod is called Zelda: Land of Hyrule.
Pretty cool that this tutorial was from falskaar
To other modders:
Here are some instructions for the second half of the tutorial. If you are simply generating a worldspace LOD (Level of Detail) for testing, and do not need to move files around because you already did so, these instructions may be helpful so that you don't have to scan through the video (I've also included some timestamps in case you instead want to use this to help navigate the video).
Change the following in the Creation Kit under World > World Spaces and your map specifically:
HD LOD Diffuse: data\textures\landscape\mountains\mountainslab02.dds
HD LOD Normal: data\textures\landscape\mountains\mountainslab02_n.dds
Click "OK," then save the plugin.
In the third-party program, Oscape (15:50):
Select Plugin
Click Fill
Select Worldspace
Check "feature-map" and "surface-map"
Click "Browse" to choose extraction folder (doesn't really matter where)
Give the file the same name as your worldspace
Extract
Wait...
(16:39)
Input Sea Level (this seems to be fixed in the current version--I didn't have to do this)
Under the "Generator" tab:
Select level of detail (in "Target of max. resolution"). "(1/1 of 1000 per tile)" is recommended.
Ensure check boxes are correct (see 17:45 for details)
Un-check PNG textures
Select desired resolution (1024x1024 is recommended)
Check "Colors"
Ensure boxes are correct (see 18:26), select resolution, un-check "PNG"
Click "Generate"
Wait a long time (at least for my 4096x4096 world).
Under the "Installer" tab, after generation (19:23):
Click "Generate" under the "LOD Settings" heading
Check all four levels of "Install"
Leave all options as default (see 19:56 for details)
Ensure the path at the bottom points to Skyrim Data folder
Click "Install"
Wait...
Ta-da! Now your LOD should be complete. Load the game up to test it. If it didn't work... You should probably watch the video instead of reading my short-hand.

The error with object LOD is to be easily solved.
1. Go to >Steam >Steam Apps >Common >Source. Then copy the TGAtextures file.
2. Paste it to >Steam >Steam Apps >Common >Skyrim >Data >Textures >Terrain > Your worldspace name >Objects
That should do it.

shut up. modding is not for you then. they gave us the tool they use to make the base game. it's a perfectly fine tool if you are competent to use it.

Maybe i will have question in the process. i hope you'll can answerme.
fine lesson
Thanks for this great tutorial, It was very clear, organized, detailed and not too fast!
Do you think it is possible to regenerate only the Object LOD from original tamriel using your method? I'd like to add LOD to my castle which uses vanilla models only. Thanks again!
Hey, doing this on SSE and it always crashes when it comes to generating trees, not sure why. Any ideas?
Amazing tutorial! :D thank you ever so much!
oooh so that's how you say faalskar... I was calling it flascar... .. silly brain
Why does it crash whenever I go to World LOD and select either Static Objects or Distant Terrain/ Water and then generate either one?? 12:16
same
Assuming you are in SSE, yeah, read this article. SSELODGen is for the trees and objects. Just read it
forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5386975-lod-for-worldspace-help/
I have no idea. Its meant for SE so you could still try.
Here's an easier way on doing the batch file. You could have it loop through the whole directory and only look for the dds file like so.
"for /R %%i IN (*.dds) do nconvert.exe -out tga %%i
pause"
"
Thank you so mutch!
Can you please do a Tutorial on HeightMap editing and world editing like how to edit your heightmap in the creation kit or even trying to get your custom heightmap into the creation kit please and thank you :)
Well i dont really know how to size it either, im not yet familiar with the map "blockers" that say "you cannot go that way" But 1024x1024 is quite big already, and it takes like 2 weeks to even get the outlook done (if you create it about 7h/day).
thank you, you are awesome.
I think its because you need to pick Skyrim under game (where the toolbar file normally is)
Has anyone made a updated video for people trying this for modern day fallout?
Great tutorial. However i can't get oscape to bring up my world space in the selection area.
Otherwise it wont work
can you give me exact instructions on how to properly manage dlc lod?
My land generates properly, but I can't get the objects + trees to load.. Even tho I have VTB.. Done everything right in the tutorial no errors..
This is for Skyrim SE, instead of Oscape, I'm using sseLODGEN.
aren't you the guy who made falskaar as an application to bethesda softworks?
you're pretty awesome :D
may i ask you a bit about that job?
do you work at home or in a studio? are you paid per hour or per finished section/model/texture/etc.?
im trying to make a fallout themed mod in the europe of the 23rd century AD just for fun. if i manage to do a bit of this (if i dont give up it'll for sure take me 3 years minimum), would this be worthy of an application too?
sounds pretty mad, but as im doing artworks anyways i decided to try to mod it too (i have modding experience in TW games)
hi please help me my terrain is black when i go to a far distance even tough i folowe devery step of the tutorial

Did you fix this?
i got crash when generating LOD, i did what you said
, should i finish my world then generate lod?
But then another 2 problems appeared:
1. Terrain LOD's are too dark. (UPDATE: they are not actually dark, they totally black, and i using just one default texture.)
2. 13:28, tree LOD's generation , when i click on "Generation" button, my Creation Kit is crashing.
Thank's man!
I made a map in such a way you don't need lod, you think it's the same on fallout 4?
Thanks a lot for tutorial. your method is definitely better than those that i used before. But the only glitch i have still is that landscape disappears on the big distances, althought mountains and trees maintain. Could you say plz how can i fix it?
great video could you do one for FO4 when you have time?
I get this error Missing DDS textures for object SERuinsTempleDeck01_LOD_0
Can I do this before I complete my mod? Say I want to go back and add stuff later, do I have to generate LOD again?
What is another program that can open the "Meshes.bsa" and other files now that Nexus Mod Manager isn't available?
Actually I've downloaded and installed it without problems, but when i attempt to open it an error pops up and says: "Could not find Follout3 directory. Follout's registry entry appear to be missing or incorrect.Install FOOM into fallout's base directory instead".
NOW... i don't have follout on my pc. I'm trying to do this for skyrim.... any idea??
D:
Thanks :D
and my entire world is now under water
