Glad you liked it, Jesse! Feeling music at that level, which you clearly did, is a very special gift. Thank you. 🙏🏼 (TS aka Atlas Plug)

Hey, very awesome for you to stop by! Been a while since I heard this, but it was a swell time.
Hope to hear more from you soon someday :D

Celldweller and Atlus Plug had such huge shoes to fill for season 3 when Mick left the project after getting hired for Doom. And they absolutely brought it! I always appreciated how they didn't try to emulate Mick and did their own thing instead. They really added to the diversity KI's OST has.
Fun fact, the vocals for the theme are a Korean folk song to represent Kim Wu's Korean heritage. The title is in reference to her literal dragon spirit. Lol
This song and Gargos's theme (shameless recommendation) are among my favorite season 3 tracks! 🤘

I've been a fan of celldweller for decades and I always thought his music would fit perfectly in videogames. Then this happened.

IIRC, his music was in Dead Rising 2 before he appeared in KI. He was banging there, as well

Haven't played this game, but was friggin' shocked and very intrigued when I heard Celldweller. One of my earliest musical obsessions - glad to see he's doing some game stuff.

I didn't even realize the KI main theme thrown in there at 4:30, I was too lost in the sauce.
I love how they do that.

You should react top The First Disciple from Destiny 2. That song hits hard

At first I also thought this sounded pretty Chinese, but when the lyrics kicked in I was like "Whoa!? It's not Chinese, It's Korean!"
The giveaway was the part starting from 3:18, where the song is a Korean folk song "Arirang", where the rap is basically saying "I'll kick your ass, make my day" in Korean.
Yeah, I should have known, cause Kim is a prominent Korean family name but I thought it was used in China as well.

Kim Wu is Korean. Which makes sense. The theme is very reminiscent of the soundtrack from KI2 as well. So good on them for staying faithful to the original.

  • @kapkant6197
    @kapkant6197 ปีที่แล้ว +8

According to the composers of the track, the lyrics of this theme are supposed to evoke South Korean nursery rhymes to represent Kim Wu mocking her opponents skill comparing them to children.

hi! KI player here. to give a very basic summary, dude on the album artwork is “Gargos”, basically an evil god who is trying to take over the world (of course). The Dragon Spirit refers to the benevolent spirit who is attached to Kim Wu when she inherited a pair of nunchucks from her… grandfather, iirc? And now she’s one of the primary “heroes” who are striving to stop Gargos. KI’s story is very basic, but I’m into a bunch of the characters, Hisako primarily. Love the reactions, as always!

He cracked open the KI OST, ya’ll know what that means!
*in the far distance slowly approaching*
    “Back to rise
    Back to grow
    Back to fly
    Back to soar
    Back to war
    Let the truth be told
I feel on fire when my passion FLOW”

    • @mago_lor

I remember suggesting this months ago. Stoked you got to it.
Kim Wu is a Korean martial artist that was introduced to the series for the sequel back in the late 90s. That’s why you’re saying it’s Chinese it’s actually Korean. There are a lot of similarities of course with the style but if you ever go back and listen to Kim Wu soundtrack from KI2, you’ll notice a lot of the themes even though it’s a lot simpler back then are still prevalent in this track here. Did a really good job of staying faithful to the original but still bringing it into the modern. Probably one of my favorite OST tracks from the series.
As far as the dragon spirit goes, I can’t remember exactly what her backstory was but I’m sure there was a dragon in there somewhere. My first thought when I heard the dragon spirit would’ve been Jago but that was the tiger spirit.

Yes, Mick didn't compose the season 3's OST because he had just landed the gig for Doom 2016 :)
The high pitched vocals always reminded me of BabyMetal, even though they're a japanese band
Also, The Dragon Spirit refers to Kim Wu's (a new character for season 3) power source, she basically summons a "dragon spirit" lol
One more thing, at 4:37 (in your video), you can hear the main KI theme like all the other tracks :)

  • @Arkl1te

A Shattered Eyedol, Enter the Battletoad, together with The Dragon Spirit, are my top tier songs from the entire Killer Instinct soundtrack.
Others of note from the duo in the soundtrack, in prioritized order: The Watchman of the Gods, The Champion of Sanghelios, Nocturne in Blood, Eagle's Theme and For The Horde.
Lastly, imo, Celldweller's remarkable work outside topic are: Switchback, Eon, Under The Feet, One Good Reason and Own Little World. All ALBUM versions, because video clip versions cut the build-ups severely.

Personally, I love Killer Instinct on SNES, but I don't own an Xbox... and considering MS bought Rare, I'm unlikely to get to experience KI any time soon, but I did keep up with the music as it came out. Kim Wu is half Korean, Half Chinese. She's also one of the younger members of the roster. Most Killer Instinct characters fulfill some sort of role with a movie genre, usually horror. Like Riptor is genetic recreation horror like Jurassic Park, Spinal is inspired by the skeletons from Jason and the Argonauts. And then you have Jago who is a Ninja, his sister Orchid (also the "main character" of the series in the same way Lui Kang is the "main character" for Mortal Kombat) who is a government agent and kind of a kunoichi. TJ Combo is a Boxer like Rocky. You got all kinds of tropish characters. Kim Wu is your "Chosen One" type character from a Martial Arts film. Also, from her trailer, you can see she's new to the whole martial artist role but has quickly accepted her role like a young adult super hero.
The high energy there really captures her invincible attitude and embrace of destiny while also playing into her heritage.

The game was released on PC later too, if I remember correctly... Originally on that Microsoft store thing, but I think they also released it on Steam later... Not sure if they put it on other services, like Epic Games... Maybe... Maybe you don't have a good PC either though, which is probably fair enough... I dunno... It's an option if you want it anyway.

I always kind of forget Killer Instinct still exists, or exists again? My main experience with it was back on the N64 and it was basically my first fighting game. Played it with my sister and dad who generally kicked our butts lol. Kim Wu was a character I used a fair bit back then! Things have certainly come a way :D.

You need to try it out. It have deep gameplay depth, very detailed tutorial and good netcode. Every character was redesigned and given unique traits ( Spinal, fox example, can now can use stacked skulls in many ways - projectiles, special enchancer and run cancel). It's hard to find mid skill players, but people still playing that in tournament or in diacord groups

If you liked this mix of metal and Chinese (or Korean, based on another comment? idk) instruments and vocals, I recommend checking out the song Gunmetal Black by Varien. No idea what the instruments used in it are, but they definitely sound similar to this, and it also mixes in a lot of metal and some light word-less vocals

For me, this was... different. Being a legally blind person, thus having to rely much more on sound all my life, I figured out immediately that this was not Mick Gordon.
This was still very enjoyable, definitely can see it being used in a lot of anime, or a Capcom game or two, but... You were right. Mick Gordon's many signatures were missing, one of them was the skillful way Mick Gordon used very noisy and out of EQ guitar sounds to make his tracks sound more POWERFUL!.
Mick gordon is GYM POWER LIFTING music.
This was much more... excited to go to a huge event and listening to something energetic on the long driver over there music.
    Very enjoyable.
But you are right, it's unfair to compare to Mick Gordon.
Now, if this is on par, ABSOLUTELY NOT. But then again, even Andrew Hulshult isn't on par with Gordon, and he is closer to him than this composer IMO.
But... is this different, and did I like it, ABSOLUTELY!
