Fun fact, Mick Gordon purchased an authentic tribal artifact, a flute carved from a human leg bone just to use it in this song... but it sounded like trash so he only plays one note on it in the entire song.
Fun fact, the lyrics are in Swedish. And if you translate the lyrics, it’s literally a ritual done by a losing army attempting to summon Spinal to aid them in battle.
the cool thing is that Mick decided to sample the original Robin Beanland OST for most of the effects that he wanted to carry over instead of just trying to copy them. This OST is very much also Robin's because Mick loves the original so much. He's said before that Killer Cuts was the very first album he ever bought with his own money, so getting KI 2013 was a big deal.
The xylophone sound you pointed out was likely a callback to his original theme from the original game! Og KI was the first game i recall playing that came with an ost CD and it made my and my cousins absolutely FERAL in our energetic elementary ages 😂
I think it uses the exact same audio sample for that bone xylophone sound as the original KI's OST, Mick Gordon was given the old audio assets and layered them into a few of the new songs. I was so glad they still had Spinal's iconic laugh audio sample from the original game, and in such good quality!
@@FullMetalSnorlax Mick talked about it and said that he couldn't find the proper synth patch so he used the original one. Also kudos to Robin Beanland who provided Mick with everything he had from original recordings.
I love how you get the feeling these people were desperate, and they prayed to something they might not fully understood, but that much negative emotion and energy manifested a dead god. Awesome stuff
Man, Warlord is such a rad song! The entire idea behind this song is that vikings are chanting and summoning the spirit of Spinal to help them in battle, as that was a very old viking tradition. His stage in game is also super sick. An old creepy washed up shore, remnants of an old ship, ghosts popping up in the background and eventually in the distance you see a kraken attacking a ship. It's great. The laughing you can hear throughout the song is actually Spinal's laugh. He's always had this goofy but memorable laugh and it's a huge part of his character. The skeletal like sounds you can hear in the song are intentional and is a reference to Spinal's og theme from old KI. It's a nice callback that also fits the song so well. Sadly, no main KI theme reference in this song. I'm not entirely sure for the case of this particular song, but I think the vocals for this are actually done by some of the devs. Because he had a limited amount of time to work on songs, most of the time he would just get some of the devs to chant lyrics for him and use them for songs. When you translate some of the lyrics for Warlord they're actually pretty goofy. Always a joy to watch your KI reactions. Mick never disappoints. 🤘 Still waiting on that Inferno reaction. 👀🤣
There may not be a KI 1 reference in this song, but the melody of the bony xylophone in the breakdown and throughout is wholesale lifted from his theme in KI2/Gold.
The songs from the Season 1 of Killer Instinct do have the "OG songs" as an easter egg. But most of them require your characters to stay idle. If you do, the newer version fades out and the OG version fades in. Can confirm that for Fulgore's theme and for Glacius'.
The laughing you hear is literally Spinal cackling. It's one of his signature traits in all the games. He does it in taunts, during certain moves, in his winner outro, etc.
Some stuff might have already been stated in previous videos but as a refresher... 13 men singing in Swedish formed the 'Summoning choir.' The lyrics are about them summoning Spinal to aid them in a coming battle. There's a fellow on YT here that mashed together the full dynamic range of each theme. As the music changes depending on if you're low health, doing a shadow counter, being rushed down etc. The most interesting part of that is if both characters are idle for a while, then each theme slows down and plays a remixed version of their original KI 1/2 themes. ~"Spinal’s theme was a global effort that combined the talents of twenty people across five countries over three months."
Killer Instinct, I didn't have any experience with the soundtrack until this channel, I really like Omen's theme so I'm wondering how good this will be. I did not expect the unsettling strings, the chants sound super tribal and gives this a cool feel. It gets really brutal right after and I love the "bone" sounding percussion. The chanting and choir sound super evil. This song is perfect for banging your head to; there's quite a few dynamics here. I also like the break in between to give us a rest. This is a certified banger and I like it.
I think you would enjoy listening to the originals from the SNES Killer Instinct before listening to the Mick Gordon remakes to see the evolution and what changes he made.
Late to the party, but some fun facts about this track: 1. Mick Gordon used an actual bone flute for this song called a Kangling (I believe, someone correct me). This flute is actually a neat little novelty he whips out when he has company over and keeps it in his house. 2. He basically scoured around Europe when finding the talent to help him with this song including the Swedish person singing the lyrics that you are hearing. 3. Spinal in game is just a Conan the Barbarian skeleton, but when they were remaking Killer Instinct, Mick wanted to make the song its own thing. It sings about a village under siege who are calling to their war god "Spinal,", skeletal god of death, to rise up, slay their ranks, and skin them alive to convert their skeletons into his army of bone. There are many references to traditional vikings such as banging their weapons against their shields to ramp up tension before a battle or how Berserkers would consume mushrooms and intoxicate themselves and feel less pain or concern during a fight.
i am crazy about this song the bamboo style zylaphone and buzz bass set to war drums is an incredible combination for my ears i LOVE the chanting a comment below point it is swedish does anyone have translated lyrics??
The rule about the Music is that if the character had an older soundtrack from an older game he made updated it with his signature style while hiding parts of the original in it. If it was a original character he hid the main theme in the theme
Ahh man I wish I liked this one more tbh. I love literally everything except the chorus and the end. The buildup is amazing, I love the monotone chanting, the bone xylophone is a hilariously awesome choice, and the deep bass is so so good. But the chorus of SPI-NAL RUSH into SPINAL just doesn't have the pirate swing of the earlier sections. And then Mick always does this weird thing where instead of ending the song on a high note, he drags it on past where I think it should end. Inferno has the same problem imo, Polemos too. Still love this entire soundtrack though, Mick's work is always top-tier.
I highly recommend doing a stretch of the Killer Instinct soundtrack. I'm gonna be honest with you. That entire game's soundtrack from start to finish is just legendary. Be it Mick Gordon or Atlas and Celldweller. Hinamatoom **Thunder's theme** Inferno **Cinder's Theme** The Tiger Warrior **Jago's Theme** (Mick Gordon went to asia and learned how to throat sing for this one) Enter The Battletoad **Rash's theme** Are some really good standouts.
This was my first time ever hearing the "main theme in each character theme" thing. Based on my memory of the themes and how this is my first time hearing that since the game released in 2013, I'm gonna guess that that's not true lol. But I'm not 100% sure so hey, if anybody's got some sources or links I'd love to see them!

ofc he did
Seems like something very Mick Gordon to do
Spinal's theme is my favorite from KI. The fact that it's basically a summoning ritual for Spinal is just really rad to me.
The guttural “DÖ! DÖ! DÖ!” just sets the tone so well. Just a bunch of skeletons screaming “DIE!!” in Swedish, love it
I thought they were saying "Flå!" as in "flay."
Sometimes they say "flå" and other times "dö"
Fun fact, the lyrics are in Swedish. And if you translate the lyrics, it’s literally a ritual done by a losing army attempting to summon Spinal to aid them in battle.
No matter how raw your viking chant is, I can't take a man seriously who's signature ability is called the skeleport! Nyeheheheheh!
This song is a weird combination of shamanistic chanting and black metal that somehow meshes beautifully.
My absolute favorite thing about this song is the bone percussions, it makes it sound so unique.

Spinal is the kind of thing you tell stories about to children to keep them well behaved and away from the reefs during the low tide.
I love that it sounds evil but there's also a certain festive quality to it
SPINAL!
SPINAL!
SPINAL!
SPI-NAL RISE!!!
i love this song so much i started learning the swedish lyrics and what they mean in english
I can’t wait for you to check out their music making of vids when you’re up to date on the music. They’re so amazing
It's killing me I haven't yet.
The bone flute really rattles them bones

I was so suprised when I heard this theme for the first time. Not used to hear my native language in games.

Music feels like tendons played from bones... Creepy... love it!

His cackling is TOP TIER. Once you hear it, you can't forget it

spinal used to be my favourite from the old KI game. It was a game from before my time but I still loved it

All of the tunes for this game are fire. Doesn't matter if they're by Mick or Celldweller. They both GOATed this one.
Can't forget Atlas Plug, since he and Celldweller worked together to finish the soundtrack for Season 3.
KI is 1 of the very few fighting games i'll play love this series and the guilty gear series
Ohhhhhh this is a good one to react to. I actually play it at the gym lmao
Fav theme 😌
Spinal is very good, but Fullgore and Kan Ra are absolute beasts - you REALLY should listen to those sometime ^^

You should give the soundtrack to Daemon x Machina a listen. I specifically recommend Arms of Immortal. That track hits hard! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
