There's a little bonus segment around 13:24 for those that watch the full video.
Character in the thumbnail is from Fire Emblem Thracia 776, which was a Nintendo Power exclusive for several months.
There's like 20 things i didn't know how to pronounce in this video 😮‍💨
FYI: Sim City was developed by Nintendo EAD under license from Maxis and published by Nintendo, so i considered it a first party title for this video

I have several of these cartridges. It's pretty interesting seeing what games people put on their different cartridges. I also have one with the Fire Emblem game on it (even has the FE sticker on the cartridge). The guy I got it from (I live in Japan) said it was his favorite and he had lots of memories with it, so even with modern methods to rewrite these carts, I will keep this one preserved.

You think Nintendo 64 not doing well in Japan was another reason for this flash cart for the SFC? A way to keep generating sales in Japan? They were trying to compete with the second hand game sales by offering lots of titles via flash cart. Genres like Horse Racing dropped to only 2 titles for the 64 but there were 35 for the SFC. Fishing had 22 titles for the SFC but only 6 for the Nintendo 64.

I remember these games confusing young me on ROM sites, thinking they were connected to the American magazine. It is interesting how forward thinking some of the service was with the Internet manuals and guides way back then.
I’m also amazed how long it lasted. The fact you could get SFC games written for real hardware after the Wii released is amazing. Same vibes as Dragon Quest X players playing together on Switch and Wii.

  • @osgeld

i mean once wii hit and they had the e-shop its basically the same concept, and they have ran a roms site ever since then. I usually dump on Nintendo when someone says they were the first at something, but they had that market nailed even back in the famicom days. It helped cut down on second hand sales and why rent when you can have RW media to play as long as you wanted. It was smart, think about it how many copies of super mario have we bought over the years lol

Great video, I remember having a R4 flash cart for the old DS, and trying to rip as many games to my 1GB microSD card as I could. I would later find out those DS games contained useless bloat data. After learning how to get rid of that bloat, I had more than twice as much space on that microSD. I bring this up because I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo was bloating their games back then, facilitating the need to delete and repurchase games due to space limitations.

It sounds like this service definitely had some issues, but I'm impressed that they got it to work reasonably well for a handful of years. The late 90s were a completely different era of technology and creating essentially a proto-eShop using physical flash carts is really cool stuff for the time. Thanks for the video, I hadn't heard of this at all and it was a really interesting watch.

The service doesn't seem so nonsensical when you consider it as a successor to the Famicom Disk System's Disk Writer service, which did very similar functions for the FDS.
The Satellaview also stored data in flash memory, although the distribution method was a bit more direct-to-consumer.

The Ring ni Kakero game is an interesting example for the Nintendo Power service, as the game was actually originally intended for a physical release in 1995, but never happened due to the incoming launch of the Saturn & PlayStation, so the NP release it got in 1998 was pretty much the only chance for the game to ever see release. Also, the NP service is how the final Super Famicom game, Metal Slader Glory: Director's Cut in 2000, ever saw release as it was also an NP-exclusive.

DX when it was released exclusively in this format in Japan. I seem to remember inserting the cartridge myself at the kiosk but not sure. 🤷🏼‍♀️ The writing of the games seemed to take forever (remember how long it took to write save files on PS1 memory cards).

Yeah, you'd insert the cart into the kiosk but then the clerk would do the writing. I actually found a few Japanese blogs where people mentioned that the writing could take longer, so I'm sure you're right. Unsure if you remember, but I did ask about an animation that you included on the Game Boy video, was of two businessmen giving two handed handshake.
This is to do with East Asian culture. If Japanese society is anything like Chinese society, it is a sign of respect to give and receive gifts, business cards, and Chinese New Year envelopes 🧧 with two hands
Even though you said that including that animation ( of the Nintendo reps shaking the Citizen reps with two hands) was a choice of convenience, rather than being strictly deliberate, I do think it was a happy accident because ion shows a cultural insight on your part.
13:06 Nice work on the slightly dirty AC unit. and the lighting!!
Your eye for showing actual spaces is so important.
Also, I like how as your channel has grown, you include previously covered subjects from those videos.

Unlike Nintendo Power, the FDS Disk Writer service didn't require bespoke media since all FDS disks were rewritable. This has resulted in some people buying used FDS disks and finding out the game on the disk wasn't the one on the label!

Mystery solved! I saw this in a random store in China Town in Toronto Canada back in the 90's but it had been modified to work with North American SNES carts. I had no idea what it was, as I'm sure they were essentially bootleggers for the games & I'd gone in to buy some Dragonball Z trading cards at the time & found it odd they didn't have actual games for sale but had this machine which clearly fit SNES carts.

I got one of these while looking for a copy of Thracia 776 in Japan last year. The game did original have a special edition retail release that came on the SF Memory Casette prior to the standalone cartridge release (which is much more rare given the late release date for a SNES game)

The fact that Nintendo ( a company ) thinks that the second hand market is " a problem " says a lot about their business model.

    • @lookitskazzy
      @lookitskazzy 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Ah yes, the business model that has them making money hand over fist. You sure got them there.
Nintendo is a for profit company. Their goal is to... Make money. People buying and selling secondhand games means they don't make money. Like it or not, that's a problem for them.
To be clear, I think once you buy it, you should be able to do whatever the hell you want with it, but this whole weird thing of "for profit company is evil because they don't like reselling of games" kind of ignores the fact that they're a for profit business. ಠ_ಠ

    • @erockbrox8484
      @erockbrox8484 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@lookitskazzy I think it is okay for a company to make a product and sell it.
However, once you buy the product then as the user you should be able to own that product.
This means you can do whatever you want with it. The original company who created the product literally has no control over such product once they initial sale of the product has transpired.
This is why now you see streaming services and software services where you cannot buy and own the product, but rather you can only rent the product.
I would argue tho, that these practices are unethical and overly greedy.
If you are a video game company, your job is just to make good games, and if you do that then people will buy your product.
But the secondary market, that is not within a video game companies jurisdiction and they should stay out of that territory.

Pretty cool such flash card fron nintendo, but it’s sad there was no N64,gbc,gba or nes cartride of it because they could,ve sold economically more games that way as well.
Eventrough there was the famicom disk system version of it the flashible disk,
So consider those services as the precursor of the eshop service.
