Reg, I very much appreciate the time and effort you put into making and posting your videos. Always interesting to watch, and always good information to walk away with. I mostly appreciate your very honest reviews, if it works you say so, if it doesn't you tell it like it is. Thank you sir for taking the time to share a bit of your experience. Be safe. Randy
thanks for your dedication reg. been watching your footage from day one and I learned alot. I also adapted myself to many of your techniques and made the hard work more enjoyable. I know your a busy man and appreciate your effort to share your insight on the tree work industry. keep it up!
thank you sir.. not everyone has access to these saws so its good to hear what they are really like.. I think weight matters a lot.. especially at the end of the day you start getting tired.
I have not met a man this sincere in my life for him to get down on his knees and explain to society of the every day life style of what we are doing in this industry means so much to me I don’t care what it means to anybody else but it should mean everything to everybody else I am just expressing how I feel when I see a video God bless my brother
Awesome, I agree with the finishing cut, I've been working on the same trees for a period of 10 years at the botanical park in Perth Australia Kings Park, and like you said with the quality of finishing cut is like a Silky on the MS150. Some days I had to use a Silky to prevent noise pollution if there was an event on whether it would be emergency climbing 'hanger' or scheduled tree surgery works, but over the last ten years it has been SILKY, MS200, MS193, MS201, MS150, and then MS160 electric so no more blowing out your shoulder with the Silky haha. Anyway, seeing the change has been amazing for me. Cheers Reg
Great review sir, your honesty is much appreciated! I have been pruning/trimming a lot the last 1.5 years, almost all aerial platformwork, also got my Treeworker (European) license etc, and I have been lucky to come into contact with many different saws. I think you are spot on with your view upon these two specimens. I use a T540 when I'm in heavier conditions, or when it rains, I've tried out a friends ms 201, and my groundsman also carries a 201, but I can't seem to get accustomed to them, they act a bit sluggish compared to the 540, don't rev up so nicely, seem heavier/less balanced.... In the electrical department I've tried out three saws, the Stihl MSa 160 T, the husqvarna T536 and a Pellenc c21 with a battery backpack... I found the Pellenc to be the weakest, the backpack has power enough for days of work, but weighs a ton... Next to that, that wire, sooner or later it is bound to get cut, I did, and then you have to wait for a new one to arrive from France, it'll take weeks. The Stihl was light, but had almost the same power as the Pellenc, very underpowered and slow, the battery ran out quick as well. The Husqvarna indeed has about the same battery duration as a tank of gas would last you, and if you put it into the slower battery preservation mode, it'll last you longer. In the slower mode, it will be comparable to the stihl. in the faster mode, it will get near a gas powered saw speedwise (probably around 20 or 21 mtrs per second?, stihl will give you 14 mtrs per second, probably around the same speed the pellenc will give you), although it will still be a bit weaker torque wise. All in all I favor the husqvarna saw in the electrical tophandle devision. Biggest minus on all the battery powered saws, when it rains, you can't use them, they are likely to break down in rainy conditions. I haven't had the pleasure to work with a 150 stihl yet, I hope to do so very soon, I really like the weight of it! I might have my climbing gear too loose, if I hang my 540 on my belt, it will always drag it down somewhat. Thanks for your upload! Cheers from the Netherlands! Lars
Hi Reg, I am on my 3rd ms150 because the previous 2 were stolen. But my point is the current one is the only one I've had that was not modified by Brad Snelling. Pull the limiters, advance the timing and modify the muffler is what he tells me he does. But I had to have one yesterday and today for couple of big td's, and hopefully I can meet him next week to get this one "Snellorized". Night and day the difference and the saw unmodified is disappointing at best compared to the terror it becomes. Hope all is going great Reg. Your pal Dave.
+Dave Shaw I know what you're saying Dave....but all Ill ever use it for is pruning. But Im glad you made the point because its a valid one for anybody sitting on the fence. Thanks
Does the electric husqvarna have any of the normal anti-vibe features? I have used a Kobalt electric and it was a juttery disappointment. I am very interested in an electric saw but I do not understand why they would not have anti-vibe, since that is supposed to be one of the advantages.
@@Recoates Wow that sounds great. It must have very good chain. I'm suspicious that my wrist pain is as much to blame on computer and phone usage as saw/small engine. It probably started with attempts at rock climbing, followed by with over triggering a leaf blower on a controlled burn and now it flares up every time I cut. I don't have a way of gauging what is normal irritation.
I have only worked public sector tree work for a couple of years. I run a saw most days at work but nothing like private tree care usage. Do you have any suggestions to avoid this? Maybe a topic for a video?
@@Recoates 2 questions: First, is carpal tunnel wrist pain after I run a saw normal after working as an arborist/equipment operator full time for 2 years? Second, do you have any tips on minimizing pain/injury from lots of saw use?
been using the Husqy for about a year at work for everything from pruning to removals it dose feel a little weak at times and at is a kinda heavy but low sound and no pull start is just to good imo
Hey Reg, if you just remove the 2 bolts holding the muff on the bottom of the 150, then after taking the muff out you remove the small black bolt and the screen and small housing falls off (shitcan that) then you drill or dremil out the exhaust opening...then put the muff back on (there is no gasket).... ..'this saw becomes a drastically different saw...much more power. Hope all is going well with you and you and the family have a great Christmas and Holiday and Best Ever 2017.
i wasn't happy with my 201 at first then got a couple 540s. i didn't like the response on the 540. advanced the timing on the 201s and they really rip now. im sure u can do the same on the 540 but i haven't found any vids on how to do that yet. thanks for your input reg.
+Niels Arnauts yeah man just check out (how to advance timing on ms201t) and on mweb1's channel he does a good break down. it's pretty easy to do. I pulled my muffler off and added a second port and did the flywheel advancing, takes bout half hour to an hour
I 100% get whatyou mean about "you'd feel fake", am over-due on launching my channel (bonsai/horticulture focused) and feel the same way, but in pondering it the past months I keep hitting a wall- if TH-cam fully beats-out TV, but the most genuine, best content-providers aren't paid.....TH-cam becomes a monolith. I have to imagine that a generic, open Patreon-or-similar account for people to donate to you if they find value, is beyond appropriate - I understand the *impression* of being fake, but a single video with you explaining things would be sufficient for anyone, nobody would have an issue if, say, you said at the start of this very video "so stihl and husqvarna always push me to videos by offering me products, I've told them the only way I'll do it is by doing comparison videos and that they either send me a saw or they don't - I said it to echo, husq and stihl, and two sent saws - this is the test", anyone who'd doubt you in such a context is not a 'real' viewer of yours, your credibility is more than established in your library dude and a certain time comes when it's fair to ask "if I'm *this* popular and generating this much traffic, how is it fair that youtube makes something and I do not?" You could even say "every cent goes directly to an annual check for XYZ cause" and just show a 2min clip annually as 'record keeping', at the end of hte day I fully get the feeling you have but I dislike the idea of youtube profiting off of you (or people like august hunicke copying aspects of your multi-sling rigging and making an overpriced speedline kit for huge mark-up - something you were almost shy in trying to say "guys, you don't gotta buy that kit, you can just assemble what you need for far less" ;) SOMEONE will capitalize on you as you're more valuable to the general audiences, if you don't direct fruits of that popularity others will :/
I would say if you drill the exhaust you will transform the little 150 also just be careful with the trigger handle as ive had that snap twice in the exact same place the plastic is real thin. Its a whole saw strip down to replace that handle also.
Good informative video as usual. I reckon that 1/4" picco chain on the Stihl 150 is pretty revolutionary in terms of how cleanly it cuts and how much less drag there is on the saw. But Stihl have a monopoly on this at the moment. From what I hear from others the newer MS201s are better than the first ones that came out... Ref advertising and keywords etc I can appreciate where you're coming from... One day you may change your mind about that. I started off just making videos and posting them just to share ideas, then it became part of my business when I started importing and selling things, and now it pretty much is all my business! You can't fight the system all the way unfortunetly....
+chainsawbars If people want to use keywords that are relative to what they are showing, then that's fair enough. I just dont like it when some people use keywords that basically have nothing to do with the content of their videos.
"Think there's some value, you may agree or disagree" LOL Reg if someone's on your channel they are - for sure - either getting value, or they accidentally stumbled-onto an arborist video by mistake!! Re fakeness, I agree with you *generally-speaking* re self-promotion and I'd have expected you're not jokeying for clicks here, BUT your modesty can actually hinder your value which would be a shame! For instance you don't use keywords, I can't understand that? That's not advertising it's simply "categorizing" the video properly- for example, your channel is (by far) the best I've found for climbing arborists, I've watched very little besides your channel since I found it, however I 'wasted' maybe 50-75 hours watching other, inferior videos before finding your channel BUT I didn't even find it via youtube I found it via August Hunicke! If he didn't give you credit for the sling-length in one of his "super sling package $300 for slings & 'biners" videos then I never would've known you existed, I think lack-of-keywords is certainly responsible for that (at least in-part!) because TH-cam's search functionality isn't the best but missing a channel that was 'so fitting' for me as yours has never happened to me and I watch a ton of youtube (it's my 'TV' when I'm able to watch stuff!) Using keywords isn't self-promotion so much as proper-procedure/technique, I see it more akin to grammar than to an advertisement! Great vid in-general by the way, agree Re the 'fan boys' who are in love with Stihl (or other brands although Stihl seems to be the only one I can recall people being fanboys of) but can't do anything rational to someone's irrational beliefs (ie that branding = quality), at any rate I'm VERY glad you made-known that they advertise like most do IE in a very deceitful/lying manner (you conjectured whether it was the rep or the company behind the dishonesty, am betting it's a bit of both as-is usually the case!) because as petty as it may sound I actually choose what brands to support based on things like that, IE if there's a husq and stihl option for me to choose from then I'd automatically fall to Husq having heard that about Stihl! (Am looking at the date of this and have to wonder just how-aggressively modded your t201 would've been at that point! Blew me away to see what mods/porting do, am so fascinated by the whole saw hotrodding stuff & trying to learn the basics on my medium-duty gear :D
I'd like to see a video on modifying a chainsaw. I bought the Stihl 193T and have had it for a year now and I hate it when this thing quits on me for no reason! Ugh....
Oh and to be clear I don't really mean "go sign up for AdSense", I dislike adsense and forced adverts (I don't see them as I use ublock & noscript), I wouldn't advocate youtube's own payment mechanisms IMO it's in the best-interest of youtube content-creators to find means of getting funding, OPEN funding, *outside* of youtube. TH-cam has to be just the platform, not the 'agent'/profiteer from the content...

Good afternoon. I was wondering if any of the early videos r in England?
sure Bill, probably the first hundred or so. last one was called 'June, crane work'. We left England shortly after.
Always great content.
In the video where you debuted your T540, I thought it sound loud and ANGRY!
great vid, honest as ever, an yer like the 150, worked at a place climbers would almost fight over it if was just prunin allday, cheers

There no noticeable vibrations on this saw. None. I guess with no piston, there is much less movement from the inside.
