The magic of this song is partly the interaction between Jeff Lynne and Kelly Groucutt, the bass player and backup singer. They meshed so well together.
I remember when I was first dating my wife, my biggest pleasure was showing her movies that I loved and watching her as she watched them. I see the same thing watching you two, I know how happy Rich is watching you enjoy something, love and happiness to both of you forever.
I do the same thing. I'm a huge movie buff. True classics, film noir, mostly black and white. But written well, acted well and directed well. My wife didn't watch movies growing up. She had a real life! Haha... So now I get to experience the greats all over again and watch her reactions. Its a pure and simple pleasure.
I used to play this song with a band and we always got a great reaction doing it. Without fail, somebody would come up on break and say, "Man great choice on Telephone Line. I love that song." Her reaction is perfect. It's a gorgeous song.
I am sorry it took me 2 years to read this comment. No truer words were ever spoken. Today, over 90% of the music that is streamed is the "oldies" that you and I grew up on. The top 200 NEWEST songs on the charts only make up about 5% of streamed music. That says everything. Yes, we did grow up in the greatest era for music.
Kenny H . I went to School in the sixtes got married in the sixtes and watching and listening to the music you post brings all the the great memories of my teens and then my ongoing married life .you can,t live without music.
Kelli is Great. I love her reactions to the soundtracks of my/our lives... but Rich .. you are most enjoyable as well for your music knowledge. . Correct drum fills... guitar n keyboard highlights.... Love the Lighter. .. and joy you have watching her react as you expect she will. You all are awesome. Thanks for sharing n letting us in to your lives. Genuine, fun people.
Love ELO and the harmonies of this song. It has always reminded me of The Beatles harmonies. Congratulations on getting back to the piano Kel. Even though I wasn’t successful at piano lessons(too distracted by being a 13 year old), I have always loved hearing piano in any song.
It's interesting how Kels body language begins to change when the first strains of the cello are heard in the second verse. She's all in after that. Probably my favorite ELO song. Great selection Rich. Very enjoyable video. Thanks for sharing. RNB
1980 first time seeing ELO, the show was in the ROUND,,, the stage look lile a cover of ELO album and it opened up like a clam shell and rotated,,, so everyone got a front on view as the stage rotated,,, WHAT A GREAT SHOW,,,,,,,
Saw them on the Flying Saucer tour the year after New World Record was released, so I got to see/hear all these great songs live. We all LOVED Telephone Line.
Back in the day, long distance calls were only connected by operators (long distant operator) even though it was a phone company scam, because it costed them no more to place long distant calls than local city and state calls, but they convinced the nation that it was more costly. Point being, he was talking mainly in an imaginary conversation with the lover who never picked up the TELEPHONE LINE , and also to the long distant operator, who he hoped would "let it ring a little longer, longer, longer, as he just sat tight , through the shadows of the night, (willing to) let it ring forever more". Jeff Lynne, often considered the 'fifth BEATLE' because he wrote and sounded so much like them and Lynne also worked with George Harrison (of the Beatles) producing high quality music. He and George Harrison and several others including Tom Petty and Bob Dylan formed a mega group called The Travelling Wilburys. Jeff Lynne was the soul and center and musical genius behind Electric Light Orchestra. The Fifth BEATLE if there ever was one. My opinion of course. ELO has several excellent albums, by the way. All worthy of a listen.
Kel, I'm 53 and during the late eighties and 200s I tuned out and missed all the great music that was created then. Sometime on the late 200s I started listening to that music and was awed that there was some really cool tunes published then. So, I feel your enjoyment of discovering new(old) music. It's been fun watching your reactions. Guys, keep doing what ya doing. Love ya!
What's so sad about this song is it will never be appreciated by up coming generations just because they have no idea what it was like to have a telephone line to your house and a phone hanging on the wall as the only connection to the outside world. The concept can't really be explained to the cell phone generation.

The song was taken from the album "A New World Record" and is the sixth studio album by Electric Light Orchestra (ELO). It was released in September 1976 on United Artists Records in the U.S., and on 19 November 1976 on Jet Records in the United Kingdom.

The telephone ring was recorded and then synthesized through an electronic mistress, so it could be played through a keyboard. Also, the first lyrics of the song were recorded with Jeff Lynne singing over a telephone.
