    Bennett is played by Vernon "Wez" Wells, best known as the mohawk guy from Road Warrior. I ran into him at a con in Atlanta, he showed up at my table, leafed through my artwork, and in a very Aussie voice, said "You like drawing naked animal women?", I shrugged and said "It's a living.", which got a chuckle out of him.

    Cindy was played by Rae Dawn Chong, daughter of comedian Tommy Chong.
    Alyssa Milano was playing Samantha Micelli on the sitcom 'Who's The Boss?" (1984- 1992) and had just wrapped the first season when she filmed this, her second film credit.
    Vernon Wells who played Bennett, actually has played a villain that was genuinely terrifying...he was Wez in 'The Road Warrior' (or 'Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior') in 1981, a role he kinda revisited comedically in 'Weird Science' the same year 'Commando' came out. He described Bennett as "Freddy Mercury on steroids".
    If you think Sully is creepy...have you two watched 'The Warriors' yet? David Patrick Kelly (Sully) plays the super-creepy Luther in 'The Warriors' (1979) having one of the most quotable lines in that movie. It's one of my favorite performances of his. He also does a really creepy turn in 'Dreamscape' from 1984, the second film with the PG-13 rating. 'Red Dawn' was the first one.
    Oh...and the kill count...109 dead (102 killed by Ahhnold).

  • @dezzconnor8360
    @dezzconnor8360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Vernon Wells is a more convincing crazy in "the Road Warrior" (and subsequently in "Weird Science") I heartily recommend you watch and react to the original "Mad Max" (specifically the 2009 re-release with the original Aussie dialog restored, since it was awkwardly dubbed into more "American" sounding accents for its original release) and to "the Road Warrior."
    Also, while they are 90s action rather than 80s, I still recommend "the Long Kiss Good Night" with Geena Davis (1996) and "the Last Boy Scout" with Bruce Willis and Damon Wayans (1991.)
    For another gem in James Horner's movie score crown, consider "Battle Beyond the Stars" (1980.) It was his third score, and arguably the one that made his career.

    I always considered this to be one of the last pure action movies from Hollywood. There's no suspense here, this isn't an action-thriller. The first time we see Matrix, first we ar shown his muscles, then we see him carrying that huge log. His opponent has a porn mustache, and is wearing fake chain mail he probably knitted himself, which also can't entirely camouflage his belly. Was there ever any doubt who would win? And apart from Cooke, all of the other opponents died just so unceremoniously without even much of a fight. And yeah, they kidnapped his daughter, but that didn't help them one bit. Not for a moment was Matrix the underdog with the odds stacked against him. This is just pure unashamed action fanservice. And I love it!
    On paper this should have been a terrible movie, but the director and cast very well understood what they were dealing with, went all the way and made it work. Objectively there's so much wrong with this movie, but the sheer enjoyment factor more than makes up for that, and not even in a "so bad that it's good"-way. It all feels very much intentional. And that's the problem with so many modern action flicks: they take themselves way too seriously.

    I love Commando I've probably watched more times than is good for my mental health. it's the perfect 80's action movie one liners, over the top villain's and bonkers action. I sum this movie up as shut up and enjoy the explosions. Here is a unless fact for you the 4 barrelled rocket launcher was a real military weapon used during Vietnam it was nominally a flame thrower as it launched an incendiary rocket . It was one of those weapons that worked but just wasn't worth the effort.

    Cindy was VERY well used in an action movie at a time when the two things a female usually did were being in distress or being a romantic interest.
    She even had her own "action scene" with the M202. As well as being able to fly the plane to get to the island.

    Bennett was chosen as the villain to go up against Arnold because of his role in The Road Warrior as Wez. He was a badass in that and also made an appearance as the same character in Weird Science. Another thing, Rae Dawn Chong (Cindy) is the daughter of Tommy Chong from Cheech & Chong fame. You might also remember Sully from The Warriors, Warriors come out and play. Since you mention Gene Simmons you should also react to Runaway 1984 and Wanted Dead or Alive 1987. Two great movies with Gene in them.

    That 4-barrel rocket launcher was the M202 Flash. It was designed to replace the flamethrowers used extensively in Vietnam, but the rockets had a dangerous habit of spontaneously igniting when loading. They also had a tendency to leak highly volatile liquids when left stored for long periods. By the time of this movie, that weapons system was considered obsolete.

    • @scotthewitt258
      @scotthewitt258 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The problems with it were highly ironic. Considering it was designed to be a "safer" replacement for flamethrowers. Which had a tendency to "ignite" operators when the fuel tank was shot into.

    This isn't a great movie, but it's a honest movie. It promises muscles, explosions and fun, just that, not a super deep message, and that's exactly what it delivers. I wish all the movies did that.

      Yes, that's what's missing from so many current movies. Way too many movies lack a sincerity and real trust in their own stories. Don't pretend that you have a deep meaningful story, and then at the same time chicken out of taking your own work serious.
      If you want to make dumb cheesy actions movies, do that and go all in.

    It's also funny how many mistakes this movie has. Some of them are really easy to spot, too.

  • @julipan2001

    The director asked Arnold to hold Sully's character on the edge of the precipice using no effect other than Schwarzenegger's own strength. The director thought that Arnold was a superhero and he couldn't help but laugh when they explained how they wanted to do the scene. Arnold clarified that this was physically impossible to do, since lifting 80kgs is not the same as holding them with an outstretched arm at the same height for the duration of the scene. That scene had to be re-planned to include the use of the crane and could not be shot when planned. Precisely in that same sequence one of the biggest raccor errors in the history of cinema occurred. Matrix and Cindy drive away from the place in a yellow Porsche recently left the dealership, when a moment ago they had destroyed it, turning it over.

    Vernon Wells, who plays Bennett, was best known back then as the mohawk-sporting main villain Wez in "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior". He was a terrific villain in that, but had very little dialogue, and I suspect that they cast him in "Commando" on the strength of his ability to make crazy faces.
