Yes, both Eddie Murphy breaking the 4th wall and Jamie Lee Curtis' body were epic. A really fun flick.
Fun fact: Don Ameche, who played Mortimer Duke, really didn't like to curse. So when they were about to shoot the scene where he screams "Fuck him!", he actually apologized beforehand to the entire cast and crew on the set, and did the scene in one take. A true professional.

Standard trading: buy low, sell high. Short selling: sell high, buy low. As long as everything balances out at the end of the day, it all works out. The profit comes between the two.
The shorter of the two train workers is more well known today as former Senator Al Franken of Minnesota.
They actually do the bulk of commodities trading at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, but they refused Landis filming permission on their trading floor, so they went to the World Trade Center instead.

    • @Tirath

      Not exactly.
What they did in this movie is actually insider trading and possibly fraud. Both are very real crimes. Shorting stocks isn't illegal, but very risky and ill advised. The recent crisis was entirely due to unexpected players in the form of thousands of "regular people" working together to do what hedge fund managers have done for years, artificially increasing the value of Gamestop/AMC/ect. to turn a quick profit.

A few points of interest that may have already been mentioned:
    1. One of the inmates in the jail scene is a young Giancarlo Esposito (AKA Gus Fring) from "Breaking Bad/Better Call saul"
    2. The inmate who kept threatening Eddie in Jail was Ron Taylor, AKA Bleeding Gums Murphy from the early seasons of The Simpsons
    3. The Duke's stockbroker near the end was Richard Hunt; aka Scooter from The Muppets
    4. It's OK if you didn't get the Stock Exchange scene; all that mattered was the good guys won (and also Insider Trading rules got changed because of this movie)
    5. There used to be a steakhouse in Philadelphia called "Winthorpe & Valentine's"; sadly, now closed due to COVID

Glad to see you guys are back and not popsicled. Trading Places was one of the first films I ever saw in a theater. Jamie Lee's scene especially stuck with me a long time. :p Was going over your master lists, and SO many good movies in there (along with a few...um, "interesting" choices), but there are some missing, and after having watched a dozen of your reactions, movies that I think might do really well in this reaction format:
Sci-Fi (you have a lot of them scattered about, but are missing some really fun ones) --The Matrix (just the classic first, II & III got muddled) , Serenity (a fave, you'll love the browncoats), Demolition Man (action/comedy both a hoot and too accurate). Also thought Cruise's "Oblivion' was more mind blowing than his "Edge of Tomorrow" the next year.
Westerns (you got a kick out of Blazing Saddles, and have Unforgiven on your list) -- more entertaining Eastwood with Pale Rider and The Outlaw Josie Wales, and then a fun blast The Quick and The Dead (starring just about everybody in Hollywood)
The Hunt For Red October (Crimson Tide was pretty good, but Red October is the gold standard for that genre IMHO)
Dead Calm (really good thriller at sea that introduced us to Nicole Kidman, as well as Sam Neil and Billy Zane)
Action Flicks -- you've got many great ones in the queue, but no Bourne 1&2?? (you could stop there, the series fell off after the 2nd, which was amazing). Also in action, Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Pitt, Jolie, fun), and The Peacemaker (Clooney, Kidman, great rollicking soundtrack)
Fantasy (you have a few fantasy oriented things, but seem to be missing perhaps the two best things (other than The Princess Bride) the genre has produced: the LOTR series (epic of course), and the movie that made Arnie into a star the year before Terminator: Conan the Barbarian (so testosterone pumped that Emilee may grow a beard + best soundtrack of all time I think, unless its Last of the Mohicans)
Comedy -- Mr. Right, Easy A (breakout role for Emma Stone), Ferris Bueller's Day Off

People didn't give an accurate description of the movie. It is a comedy classic movie starring Saturday Night Live comedy legends, Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd, in a movie that is partly about stocks and trading, but mainly about rich Commodity Brokers, the Duke Brothers making a bet and coming up with a scheme to switch the lifestyles of Louis Winthorpe and Billy Ray Valentine just to see how their lives would turn out. Why? Because they were crooked rich people who had nothing better to do, and thought they could get away with it. Hence the title "Trading Places".

Fun fact: the guy in the jailhouse scene (leaning against the bars while Eddie Murphy is acting like he's a kung fu badass) is none other than a very young Giancarlo Esposito, aka Gustavo Fring in Breaking Bad.

"Fukk him" my favorite line of the film, and quite possibly of all time. Definitely top 3-5.
It's so great to me because it's not just because it's a comedy and it was funny, but the way they are portrayed throughout the film I can truly believe he would let his brother die before he would lose money. It's absolutely in his character to say that and mean it with all his heart.

Great movie. Stock brokers loved this film. You know the Stock Change acutely made a rule named the Eddie Murphy rule probating the action see in the film. Other great Eddie Murphy film is the Golden Child. I can not believe you gave this movie a 9.7 which a light comedy and masterpieces of comedy like The Naked Gun barley a 9.

Credit cards weren't electronically processed then they used those paper imprints and would take days to clear so it makes sense to revoke his cards, he could rack up quite a lot of purchases before anyone realized the account was closed.

    What happened in the Climax:
Real Report says Normal Crop meaning low/normal prices for OJ
Fake Report Says Weak Crop meaning High price for OJ
    1. Dukes bought lots of OJ Futures Driving the price up
    2. Other Traders Saw the Dukes "knew something" and starting buying to get in on it driving the price up more
    3. Billy Ray and Lewis Start Selling Futures they don't have(Short Selling) this stabilizes the price tipping the Dukes off to what is happening
    4. Before the Dukes can reverse their position to reduce the damage the crop report comes out.
    5. everyone starts panic selling as they now have a bunch of high priced OJ they can not sell at that price.
    6. Billy Ray and Lewis wait for the price to drop significantly causing the panic to increase as there are so few buyers
    7. Billy Ray and Lewis announce they are buying everything while everyone else is selling causing the price to drop faster.
    8. Billy Ray and Lewis now have enough OJ to sell to the people who bought it at a high price earlier in the trading day.
    TLDR
Billy Ray and Lewis Sold High then Bought Low and tricked the Dukes into Buying High then Selling low.

The ending confused me for the longest time, but from what i've read, they basically sold stock at a really high price (before they had actually bought it), and then when the price started falling they bought the stock to sell. so they sold high, bough low. made a ton of money. great movie! nice reaction.

Whereas the Dukes' man bought medium to high, and sold low.

If you were confused about the ending, Louis and Billy Ray got a hold of the crop report before it was announced publicly. The report stated that the cold weather did not affect the orange crops, so that meant orange juice production would remain high. Any commodity is valuable only when it is in limited supply, and if a commodity is plentiful, it's less valuable. In stock exchange, the idea is to buy for very little and sell for a lot, generating profit. Louis and Billy Ray used all the money they had(including what they got from Ophelia and Coleman) to buy their own shares, which weren't much.
When the markets opened and people started buying OJ stocks the prices started climbing, and Louis waited until the price got just high enough, and then started selling their stocks. Once Louis and Billy Ray started selling and other stock brokers started buying their shares, the prices suddenly started dropping. When the crop report came out stating that crop production had not been affected, stock brokers and investors started panicking because now the OJ stocks wouldn't be as expensive because the production would be plentiful. That's when Louis and Billy Ray started buying, when the price was at its lowest, allowing them to buy out everyone's OJ stocks. They sold for a great deal of money and then bought the OJ stocks for very little, making them a tremendous profit, while the Dukes - who just kept buying worthless stock - ended up broke.

Another terrific movie with Don Ameche is "Cocoon." Also, "Things Change" is amazing, too. Also, also, the guy who played Clarence Beeks was the principal in "The Breakfast Club," another terrific movie from the '80s. Also, also, also, Ralph Bellamy was considered quite the heartthrob when he was younger.
You two are the perfect couple. I adore you.
