As a Ukrainian, I can say with absolute ceirtanty: There's absolutely no way Ukrainians will ever return under Russian sphere of influence.
We will always remember Bucha, Mariupol and what russia has done to the occupied territories.

A difficulty with Russia joining NATO is that we would be implicitly backing Russia for its conquests against China and its multi-ethnic empire. Doubtful we would want to guarantee that. Its also the reason Russia can't have democracy because it needs dictatorship to hold its empire together. Maybe if Russian empire has already collapsed the European part might be in NATO. In 2000, Russia held its first presidential election, and Putin, who pledged to "democratize Russia and double the national economy," was elected.
In 2002, Putin enthusiastically attended the NATO conference in Rome, where he requested NATO membership. However, Russia's progress in democratization had not yet met NATO's standards, so it was treated as an associate member for the time being. Seeing this, it was only natural that Ukraine would seek to join NATO. However, Putin then halted Russia's democratization and steered the country toward authoritarianism. He then began to distance himself from NATO and became its enemy.
In other words, Ukraine is not to blame for anything. Putin's selfish behavior is solely to blame.

Ukraine could absolutely win, if it survives the next year. At the end of that year Europe and the US (assuming continued support) would have scaled up their weapons industry, so Ukraine may have the advantage in artillery. Also it will have received and integrated at least 60 F-16 fighters and maybe others. Russia is meanwhile struggling with manpower and material, especially tanks. Unfortunately, Ukraine won't survive the next year, that's pretty clear from all the draft dodging, desertion, and Russia slowly gaining ground.

@stevewebb7126 well, I think letting russia redraw borders in Europe through force creates a very dangerous situation for everyone. Won't russia's smaller neighbors want nuclear weapons to defend themselves? Won't countries like China now think that they can get away with violent invasions of their neighbors? Doesn't it erode the dominance of the west of russia and China are allowed to gobble up their smaller border countries?
The rf has been at war with the west since 2014 (maybe earlier), so we're making decisions here that either weaken or strengthen a stated enemy. That's how I see it.

The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR) was a key constituent of the Soviet Union, serving as its largest and most influential republic. With Moscow as its capital, the country spanned a vast territory across both Europe and Asia, making it a geographically diverse and politically significant entity within the Soviet structure.
The economy of the RSFSR played a crucial role in supporting the broader Soviet economy, with a focus on heavy industry, manufacturing, and resource extraction.
Politically, Russia held a central position, often providing leaders for key roles within the Soviet government. The General Secretary of the Communist Party, a position of paramount importance, was frequently occupied by Russian leaders. The cultural impact of the RSFSR was also substantial, with Moscow emerging as a hub for literature, arts, and sciences, contributing significantly to the overall cultural landscape of the Soviet Union. Despite its strengths, the RSFSR faced challenges, including economic inefficiencies and periods of political unrest such as the Russian Civil War. The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 marked a transformative moment for Russia. It emerged as an independent state, ending its status as a Soviet republic and paving the way for the establishment of the Russian Federation. The legacy of the RSFSR continues to influence the political, economic, and cultural landscape of modern Russia. The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 also allowed an independent nation, to be made for each of the Republics below, because they all had been broken free from their Soviet identity and had declared sovereignty on the world stage.
Russia (Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic)
      Ukraine (Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Belarus (Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Kazakhstan (Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Uzbekistan (Uzbek Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Georgia (Georgian Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Lithuania (Lithuanian Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Moldova (Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Kyrgyzstan (Kirghiz Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Armenia (Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Tajikistan (Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Turkmenistan (Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Latvia (Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic)
      Estonia (Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic)
So, Putin has no right to insist that Ukraine is still a part of Russia, when Russia was not the only republic in the USSR, there were 15 Republics, but Putin believes they all should be brought back to one Federation, the USSR once again. So he invaded them, and the USA does not stand for any Sovereign nation to be invaded by another, and that is why we are helping to protect Ukraine.
