I’m using this comment to just shout into the void that I want a remix-remaster-re-WHATEVER of Free as a Bird and Real Love. They have the technology now, they’re good songs, and THEY CAN MAKE THEM BETTER! Alright, that’s all I got. Great video, Matt. 👍
These have been done much much better by amateurs and Johns vocals sounds so clear and normalized. Perhaps they didn’t include those since the ones floating out there are so well done.
For early George, I would have included "Do You Want to Know a Secret?" instead of "Roll Over Beethoven." It was a Lennon-McCartney composition, but George sang lead. Instead of "You Really God a Hold on Me" and "You Can't Do That," I would have selected "If I Fell" and any of the following: "You're Gonna Lose That Girl," "Think for Yourself (if you want more George), or "The Word."
Agreed re: "Do You Want to Know a Secret". I don't mind "You Can't Do That" (a GREAT song, and one of the few that John solos on), but not including "If I Fell" is criminal.
@@yes_head yep. "If I Fell" is a phenomenal composition that features some trademark vocal hamonies by John and Paul, AND a lovely chord progression! One of my all-time favorites!
@@tdunph4250 The first record I ever owned was the Help! / I'm Down 7" single when it was inititally released. I was ten years old. It was quite the thrilling purchase. Pretty much wore out the grooves on both sides with thousands of plays and I'm not exaggerating.
The original Red and Blue collections more or less gave you all the single a sides and some of the double a sides and unlike the later Past Masters threw in single a sides that had been on albums too. For an expanded Red and Blue I would want a complete single a and b side roundup to be part of it. Key EP tracks too but singles would be the main thing.
Them tacking Now And Then onto the Blue Album is so friggin' weird. It's called "1967-1970" and they're slapping on something written in 1979, worked on in 1995, and finished in 2022..... It begs the question of why they aren't just calling it "1967-2023" and also not including Free As A Bird and Real Love (both of which breached the Top 20 in the 90s).
Was definitely hoping they would remix Free as a Bird and Real Love and include them in this release. HUGE missed opportunity in light of the new tech they're using for Now and Then.
@@EricSchultz-zs8hz Not a fan of the Anthology albums because a lot of it is odd novelty stuff that brought back studio session memories for George Martin, but isn't attractive to me for repeat listenings. I'm not a fan of outtakes. Filler.
Matt, i TOTALLY agree with you about the questionable addition of the tracks "Roll Over Beethoven", "You Can't Do That", "I'm Only Sleeping", "Glass Onion" & "I Want You". If you look at this from the point of view of someone just discovering The Beatles - these songs don't represent the Beatles mainstream sound - or in the case of Roll Over Beethoven & You Can't Do That some much better choices could have been made. Also "She's A Woman" & "Rain" were an absolute must for this set.
You can't do that is one of my favourites from that period. To me it's an essential song to include, but I can see why others are preferred by people: there are so many too choose from. Another song that could have been chosen from the 1963/64 period is Soldier of Love.
My guess is Free as a bird and Real Love is probably being saved for The Anthology remix for 2025. I also think they are giving us a taste of the 2023 remixes so we can get an idea of the New technology for further album releases. I think the 2023 remixes are going to be awesome and Rubber Soul will follow next year.
Remix the anthology tracks?? Heck I was happy just to have all my bootlegs upgraded as well as they were. I had a 5 cd set called anthropology that had a lost of the anthology stuff and more but the quality on those were rough....we used to have vinyl boots that were barely listenable and you were dang glad to have them.
They went with Red & Blue now because those have the most mass appeal. People in a certain age bracket (younger than I) got into The Beatles through those particular albums. So, as you would expect, they're going for maximum gross sales figures.
Within You Without You was groundbreaking. Indian classical played such an integral part in George's life. Compilations shouldn't always have to be 'Greatest Hits'. It's not the Eagles. But 'It's All Too Much' would've been cool.
I Love Within You Without You, but I feel its out of place, a month ago on Andrew Dixon's channel, He made a track listing on what should be on the Blue Album, and he suggested the song The Inner Light, which is a lovely song, but also I dont think it fits in the Album, I remember leaving a comment that a better Harrisong would be Its All Too Much.
@@milosit Northern Song is one of my faves because it is very complicated and sophisticated in music composition terms. Listen to the weird chord structures and chord progressions. Mind boggling. Should have been on the Sgt. Pepper album!
@@continentalgin Agree, agree, agree, continentalgin! I've loved it since I was eight or nine years old. A song, singing about itself, spoke directly to my child brain and my funny way of looking at things and still does. It's George smiling at us.
I tend to agree with everything you said. I, too, would include Cry Baby Cry, and It's All Too Much, but the long version. I also would have included It's Only a Northern Song. Love that song
Totally agree. I'd also replace "I Want You (She's So Heavy) with the superlative "You Never Give Me Your Money", which I think is one of the best tracks The Beatles ever recorded. And I'd certainly place "Because" well ahead of "Oh Darling!".
Apple released 1963 bootleg series, so what’s left? Anthology series could add 27 min helter skelter and carnival of light as examples, they kept red album track numbers low to make sure we buy SDE of albums in future with full remixes
My scratchy 50 year old vinyl still sounds good. I can understand adding bonus tracks and B sides since the red album was so short. But wasn’t that what Past Masters was for?
To those who are decrying the omissions of “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love”, I have it on good authority that there are plans for a “Beatles Anthology” remix: both the CDs and the DVDs although it has never been released on Blu-Ray. Reportedly, there are additional hours of footage of Paul, George and Ringo from 1995-96 which has never been seen. And, Peter Jackson is rumored to be involved with this. Last but not least, there is possibly going to be additional outtakes on the remixed “Anthology” albums. The 30th anniversary is coming up in a couple of years.
About ten years ago I bought a bootleg multi dvd set called Anthology The Director's Cut. It features a lot of extra interview footage. The weird thing about it is that it only goes to the Get Back/Let It Be sessions. If they ever do an official remix with all the extra footage on Blu-Ray I'm so buying it.
The Anthology film 100% needs to be upgraded and put on streaming (I suppose Disney+), but that in no way should have kept FAAB and RL off of Blue, when they are positioning Red and Blue as career-spanning. To skip over the '90s tracks but include a 2023 track is absolutely bizarre. (Then again, they really should have simply created a new comp altogether for these remixes and kept Red and Blue as the originals and only 62-70). Anyway, lots of remixed 62-66 tracks were added to Red, and those individual albums from that era will be re-released in the coming years as well. That didn't stop Apple from adding those tracks to Red! So why should future plans to reissue the Anthology soundtracks have stopped Apple from adding FAAB and RL? Fans will re-buy Anthology for the hours of other exclusive content those discs have on them.
Agree with you 💯 about adding “It’s All Too Much,” and I wondered the same thing about this being the end of the remixes considering the additions to the Red album. As always, thanks for the videos, they are always enjoyable and highly informative.
My track listings… I agree with some of your amendments too. Strictly no covers… 62-66 CD1 1: Love Me Do 2: Please Please Me 3: I Saw Her Standing There 4: From Me To You 5: She Loves You 6: I Want To Hold Your Hand 7: This Boy 8: It Won’t Be Long 9: All My Loving 10: Can’t Buy Me Love 11: You Can’t Do That 12: A Hard Day’s Night 13: And I Love Her 14: Eight Days A Week 15: I Feel Fine 16: I’m A Loser 17: Baby’s In Black 18: Ticket To Ride 19: Yesterday CD2 1: Help! 2: You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away 3: I Need You 4: We Can Work It Out 5: Day Tripper 6: Drive My Car 7: Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) 8: Nowhere Man 8: Michelle 9: In My Life 10: If I Needed Someone 11: Girl 12: Paperback Writer 13: Rain 14: Eleanor Rigby 15: Yellow Submarine 16: Taxman 17: Got To Get You Into My Life 18: Here,There And Everywhere 19: Tomorrow Never Knows
As a younger (and poorer) person, I see these as being more for streaming. I don't think the physical releases are the main concern anymore. Most older Beatles fans probably have the songs they love on vinyl already. That said, I would definitely have picked different tracks and this definitely seems like a pandering to George songs which, honestly, don't need to be here all the time. I love the original demo of 'Now And Then' and hope the new version retains at least in part some of that lonely soulfulness John carries. To have a 'new' Beatles song released in my lifetime is definitely exciting, and if it's the same technology used as was with Get Back then I'm sure it could sound really good. I just hope it's not a Disney Star Wars situation - fanfare for emptiness.
I agree. There is no reason for vinyl albums anymore with all the songs on streaming. Maybe my ears just aren't as good as some other people's. I just can't hear all the differences that audio philes can.
@@FlamingoKicker i still get vinyl when it's cheap because i guess i like the ritual, but those people who buy every boxset and re-release just seem crazy to me
I'm an old fart with tons of physical media taking most of the wall space in my apartment, but in contrast to me, my daughters love streaming, they stream all their music and movies, and they think physical media is a huge burden. So, there you have it, will collecting physical media be reduced to a tiny percentage of music lovers in the future? The resurgence of vinyl, repackaged and re-priced for audiophiles, has helped immensely in creating new, young collectors, but most of them consider record collecting definitely a luxury habit, not a very common and very affordable thing as it was in my youth. Shelving big, heavy collections is a pain, so I can see where they're coming from. Streaming is super convenient and high quality if you have decent components for it.
Once again you nailed it Matt. I agree with you on everything. Sad thing is that all the powers that be will milk the golden cow until it’s dead. How many times can you pay for the 15:35 same songs?? And truthfully not many people can hear any difference between them when they do remix. Lol. I know I can’t.
It's difficult to be a fan of the Beatles or Paul McCartney. I'm eager to listen to "Now And Then," but I'm still saving my money for the 75th Anniversary Super Collector's Diamond Uber Platinum Edition of the 5th remix of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band. ...and that's not even including the prices for the 24 different colored vinyl variants!
I agree with the 3 songs you thought really didn't make the grade for Disc 1 of 62-66. I was thinking : Do You Want To Know A Secret, Money, No Reply and add You're Going To Lose That Girl. I'm really looking forward to binge watching your recent Beach Boys videos. Take care Matt, RNB
Great discussion regarding track listing with great graphics that clearly show the new track list inclusions. The Beatles pushed "I'm Only Sleeping" with the Revolver box even with a music video. Of course "Rain" is superior! Great push for "It's All Too Much" and the rare film version! I would push for Magical Mystery Tour as well on the "Blue" album....
Rain belongs on there. But I would add I don't think that you can have a rare version of a underappreciated track on a greatest hits. But the Beatles obviously disagree. After all, they have put Now and Then on what is essentially a best of the Beatles, or Beatles primer, when nobody has even heard it! They must really like it!
Matt, I agree with many of your comments about the Red & Blue releases. However, I strongly disagree with you about "You Can't Do That", which is a terrific song, IMO. The band's playing and singing are very strong, and John's bossy, biting attitude is priceless.
I'm very excited for the new song, although I don't really care for the Red and Blue Albums since I don't like compilations. Apple missed the mark of doing something with the Anthology series which would've been far more interesting. Some of the added songs are also very odd, there's still barely any songs from Beatles For Sale. They could've at least included No Reply or Kansas City, considering that they added cover songs.
The red and blue albums were my very 1st Beatle albums that I ever owned that I received in 1975. I don’t play them now but I have such fond memories of getting to know their music during that time period.
The Red Album was my first LP ever, got it X-Mas 1973 and I played it for years as it was the base of a lifelong addiction. I wish the coloured inner sleeves had not been lost. But I guess it's the same with all things if you use them as intended they get used if you keep them as collectibles you're old ;-)
I agree that Rain should have been on this. For No One would have been a great one to add. I would have put Happiness Is a Warm Gun instead of Glass Onion.
Never saw that promo sampler of the red & blue before. Waaay cool. I don't know if I stated it here, but what they should've added to the existing red and blues would be to add #1 - all the charting songs from 1963-1976 and #2 - all the "other" songs from UK & US "hit" compilations (A COLLECTION OF BEATLES' OLDIEIS to 1982s 20 GREATEST HITS). Right there, might be lengthy, but there you have it. The trailer for the single is veeeery interesting. They talk with Ringo about playing on the track, but the excerpt from a George interview (1995) is about them finding the track, or "a" track. Ringo mentions Paul contacting him to put the drum track on, etc., etc. They don't mention George participation on the track because, the old "lore" (circa 1999-2000) was that George never was on it, because he didn't want to do it and/or didn't care for the song. Then, shortly after, George passed, and the song went in to a "limbo" state. Unless they lifted a track from a band rehearsal of the song before George went back home, he's probably not on the "new" track at all. We'll see what they credit George with on this track, if anything. I've heard (maybe here) that they might "AI" some backing vocals. Also, with "Now And Then," the Jeff Lynne produced version kept on popping up here on TH-cam every two to three years, and I think most of us have had our own dub of that mix for a while. Paul was probably advised against releasing that now. What would Jeff Lynne do about it? My feeling is that perhaps Paul doesn't want to find out, and that's why the Lynne co-produced ANTHOLOGY tracks aren't part of this new collection. The new compilations aren't the answer to everything. That's not their intent, it's to get a "new" product out by Christmas. Following the Apple schedule, the actual "box set" might be out by 2040 or so.
I think you are spot on with your analysis. "Rain," "She's a Woman," "Birthday" & "It's All Too Much" would be great choices. Yes, "Within You Without You" and some of the other choices are going to turn off some fans.
I understand Within You Without you. Including one Indian song is understandable if you want to have a collection that shows what The Beatles were about. I don’t understand the inclusion of “Roll Over Beethoven” and “You Really Got a Hold on Me” on the Red album. Why covers from With The Beatles and no extra songs added from Beatles For Sale which still only has one track?
I agree with your Red/Blue analysis…I think Within You Without You could’ve been traded out for The Inner Light, but the movie edit of All Too Much is an interesting idea from a completionist perspective
Great spot, Matt...at 67, I am officially burned out on new Beatle releases...about as much as imagining crowds still paying hard-earned money for Paul and Ringo shows...but I guess I am just an old curmudgeon! Thanks again!
Personally I'm set when it comes to Beatles original mixes mono/stereo in vintage Vinyl and Digital. So too me these new mixes are just fun some are better some are worse but most are just different and it makes me appreciate the old mixes as well as the new. I would've liked to see more 23' mixes on the the added Blue tracks but overall we are getting a lot of new mixes so it is wonderful. Thanks p.s. although Rubber Soul is heavily represented on the RED I still would love a RS Deluxe version soon.
Great critique and recommendations, Matt. Those blue/red albums are the first vinyl I ever owned, but for whatever reason I never added the CDs to my collection. I might get these just to complete the collection, but yeah -- some odd choices and missed opportunities (NO "RAIN"???) And I agree the focus should be on making releases of the individual albums as special as possible. For example, as I mentioned down-thread how cool would it be to have box sets of A Hard Days Night and Help! with both the US and UK versions so that everyone has the George Martin film scores? And they could also include all the studio outtakes now available. Much more money to be made that way, I'd think. Btw, have you done a video about the Stowe School live recordings that came out recently? I just heard them and -- quality notwithstanding -- they're a revelation for any Beatles geek.
Agreed, 'Within You Without You' is an odd choice for what is essentially a best-of collection. 'It's All Too Much' would have been a better choice, more upbeat and deserving of more attention than it probably gets on the Yellow Submarine collection, plus it's in keeping with the trend of more Harrison penned songs.
I don't know. The Red and blue albums as well as 1 are going to be the defacto go to releases for casual listeners. I quite like the fact that even in a band as monumental as The Beatles there are still deep cuts that you have to look for. It rewards effort. It's all too much being ubiquitous doesn't have the same charm as when it is overlooked. I rarely play that song anymore. Everytime I do it's a treat.
@@Maytricks_Lee_VR I think there's something to what you say about having to make the effort, not making it too easy. Like singles and B-sides. I find that several of Harrison's 1967 songs have a sort of stand-alone quality. They somehow don't flow as well on the albums, this being the era when Harrison had pretty much lost interest in playing guitar and took up organ and droning instruments such as 'Within You Without You,' 'Only a Northern Song,' 'It's All Too Much,' 'Blue Jay Way,' 'Inner Light.'
Seems like they added a lot of songs from the 1976 album "Beatles Rock & Roll". Also, fans have complained for years that when the red album went to CD they could put the whole thing on one CD instead of being charged for a double album. The new version will correct that with more songs added for a true double album. I would have left off " I'm only sleeping" and "Within You Without you. They ruin the flow of the albums I feel. I might have added "PS I Love You" and "Do You Want To Know a Secret". Both songs got a lot of radio play back in the day.
I would have preferred a deluxe Rubber Soul with the outtakes, book and remixes. However will gladly take these looking forward to the new 2023 remixes on the Red Album and the Blue Album Revolution and MMT mixes. I do wish they had included I Should Have Known Better since for me that was such a perfect representation of the early exciting Beatles energy. Perfect vocals and instrumentation. I do agree, the anthology holds little excitement for me. I’d take another 5 hours of Jackson’s Get back before Anthology.
He's going to be disappointed with Rubber Soul if he didn't like the UK mixes on 1962-1966 and 1967-1970. Rubber Soul will have the UK track listing and that to a Brit is how it's supposed to sound. I hear people use the Brian Wilson inspiration as a justification that the American version was the best but clearly, Lennon, McCartney, Harrison, Starr and George Martin didn't think that.
I think we will get box sets for the early albums. The John Lennon compilation from 2020 featured entirely new mixes for everything, and then six months later the Plastic Ono Band box came out with even newer mixes for those songs.
I think it’s pretty awesome that they’re including some counter intuitive tracks. It makes these compilations special. I don’t want a greatest hits from the Beatles. Within You Without You is an incredible track! I do agree that Rain should be on there.
Great to hear from you Matt, but I don't have much to say with these releases. I own all the original British releases,as I would suspect most big Beatle fans have as well. I did enjoy your take on the added songs and pretty much agree with you on them and those obvious omissions too.
I was looking at the track listing and no Beatles for Sale material. Only Eight Days a Week. They should have added No Reply, Im a Loser, Rock and Roll Music.
I agree with everything you said here, though I'd probably put Helter Skelter in place of Glass Onion. With the Yellow Submarine songtrack from 1999 and the Magical Mystery Tour Blu Ray and all the box sets, "The Inner Light" is the only 1966-1970 to still await a released remix. So, I'd have put that in place of Within You Without You (it's also a better song in my opinion).
Wonderful analysis! Thank you stay well stay safe! And almost forgot to mention, I would love more outtakes also! That's what is truly fascinating. When I listen to an outtake it's as though I get to be in the studio with them and as a musician that's really to hear.
I once read in a magazine that the Beatle's era between Ticket To Ride and Tomorrow Never Knows is considered the, "Electronic Era." And the 2023 releases reflect that. This includes Yesterday.
The point of this release is to provide a gateway to The Beatles, much like "1" did before. There is no doubt that hearing the catalog with the new technology left certain impressions on the Apple decision-makers. The question is why were these songs chosen? Summary below! I Saw Her Standing There (Paul's energy and familiar Paul tour staple) Twist and Shout (energy/the legend of John's vocal takes) This Boy (vocal harmonies in new technology) Roll Over Beethoven (a George song/young George energy) You Really Got a Hold on Me (vocal performance/groove/George Martin piano in new technology!) You Can't Do That (groove appeal) If I Needed Someone (George/beautiful chimey guitar clarity in new technology) Taxman (George classic) Got to Get You Into My Life (groove, horns with new technology) I'm Only Sleeping (soundscape experience) Here, There and Everywhere (pristine vocals with new technology) Tomorrow Never Knows (soundscape experience) Within Without You (George classic/legacy) Dear Prudence (John/vocals/soundscape) Glass Onion (John/energy/song texture in new technology) Blackbird (Paul classic/staple/mandatory for guitarists) Hey Bulldog (energy/Beatles' fun/just a great song overlooked for decades) Oh Darling (Paul classic/upfront vocal in new technology) I Want You (She's So Heavy) (Rock/Soundscape with new technology) Now and Then (new Beatles' song filled out to the max with new technology?/doesn't qualify as '67 to '70) I will summarize the choices like this: 1. These songs sound great with the new technology! 2. Great little rock and roll numbers representing the Red period. 3. Strong vocal harmonies from the Red period. 4. Groove possibly appealing to modern audiences from the Red period. 5. George Martin and Abbey Road's production and innovation on display in late Red period and Blue period 6. Eclecticism ranging from beautiful vocal harmonies to excellence in rock appealing to a wide range of audiences. I'll stop here, but all of these decisions represent portals into The Beatles music. Face it, the timing of these releases makes them holiday season gifts from Beatle-lovers to potential Beatle-lovers. You can view this as blatant marketing, or a list of reasons for people to discover what The Beatles were all about. And supposedly hearing The Beatles with "the best sound possible" should be somewhat of an experience for all of us.
God, couldn't agree more. Free As A Bird and Real Love is a missed opportunity. I'm just wondering if they're going to make the newly definitive stereo mix of She Loves You. Nobody is talking about the possibility of finally getting that.
Matt-thank you so much. Indulge me, as I reminisce but in the seventies when the red and blue set came out, the big albums knocked us flat. We knew the past 10 years had been a wild ride, but the boxed set absolutely stunned us. We thought of the Boys as Mozart and Beethoven. To our ears “Hide Your Love” was the cornerstone of folk rock; “I Want to Hold Your Hand” now in stereo was a revelation. The red and blue hit all the highest high points without missing a beat. The playlist on the 2023 set is fine but won’t have the impact of the 1973 issues. There are just too many “deep cut” songs that will bore, distract or confuse the casual listener. Play Within You to any millennial and they’ll be reaching for their vapes and starring out the window. What I would have done would be this: add the great songs that never made the cut: If I Fell; I Should Have Known Better; She’s a Woman; Rain; Hey Bulldog; You’re Gonna Lose That Girl; I Need You; Blackbird; Two of Us. Instead of “Within You Without You” I would have used the demo of “Sour Milk Sea”. It’s better than anything on the Yellow Submarine album.
Imaging taking the time an effort they used on Now and Then and applied it to Sour Milk Sea or All Things Must Pass. But by calling Now and Then "tha last Beatle song" or something to that effect will deny us some true gems that would be more valuable than what we've just been given. Great comment. Thanks Tosstrap!
I was about 6 when I dug through my parent's record collection and started listening to the Blue Album over and over again. It wasn't only an introduction to the Beatles, but an introduction to music as a whole. Due to its incredible flow and aesthetic diversity it opened me up to all genres from jazz to punk. I wish they handled this release with a little more thought and care.
Totally agree with you that Rain would have been a great fit for the Red album. I also agree that Free as a Bird and Real Love would have worked alongside Now and Then. Maybe the inevitable Anthology update will finally include Carnival of Light! I still have my Red album on vinyl.....never got a Blue copy for whatever reason. Great video once again!
Thank you for your review! I like pretty much their whole catalog and it's difficult to draw the line. Maybe have If I Fell, I Call Your Name, She's a Woman and Rain included (not Roll Over Beethoven, You Really Got a Hold on Me and I'm Only Sleeping) on the Red. I also agree with the idea of Birthday (not Glass Onion, Within You Without You, Oh Darling and I Want You (She's So Heavy) on the Blue. Glad they included Hey Bulldog for sure.
I disagree with I'm Only Sleeping, which if you remember was released as a video for the Revolver box set, and Glass Onion which is absolutely great song and fits very well. Those weren't technically "greatest hits" albums, since many of the songs originally included had never been released as singles. I do agree including Within You Without You is an odd choice, but that's fine. And there's no way they don't remix Rubber Soul, but who knows their exact plans. And I am with you that the mono versions of their albums up through Sgt. Pepper are really the definitive versions as far as I'm concerned.
I’m not surprised about the inclusion of I’m Only Sleeping, Glass Onion, and Within You Without You. They all had promotional videos for their remix releases and in the case of WYWY, a video of the mashup from Love.
Amazing, I also would have picked 'Rain' over 'I'm Only Sleeping', good call. Although I grew up with those Red and Blue albums and cherished them I never bought them on CD. The Red album could have fit on a single disc it was so short. And I can make my own CDRs if I wanted to. They definitely could have added more to that one. I like your choice of 'It's All Too Much' as well. I did not re-purchase their first 5 albums when the 2009 remasters came out. But if they could remix them with new technology to give us true stereo I'd certainly buy them. When the Anthology releases came out 'Free as a Bird' and 'Real Love' were released as CD singles with 3 extra tracks NOT on the albums. They could re-release those as singles.
Things We Said Today I'll Follow The Sun Rain Love You To For No One She's Leaving Home Blue Jay Way Baby I'm A Rich Man The Inner Light Happiness Is A Warm Gun I Will Helter Skelter Cry Baby Cary Because You Never Give Me Your Money Golden Slumbers Carry That Weight The End Free As A Bird Real Love The above listed songs would make a greater album than almost any other band's greatest hits compilation and yet none of these songs are included on the new and expanded albums. My point isn't just that it's unfortunate that none of these songs are included, but rather that The Beatles were so great and prolific that even a 75 song compilation isn't enough.
I bought the Red and Blue lps when they came out in the 70s. Afterwards I bought most of the original releases and never played the Red and Blue again. For the uninitiated the greatest hits packages are a good intro but for the real deal you've got to get the original albums.
Similar here. I bought Red and Blue (U.S.) in the 70s and added the U.K. versions in the 80s. I never play them. I'm not interested in the new ones. I did buy the new Now And Then 7 inch vinyl singles (4 variations). Back in the 90s I bought Free As A Bird and Real Love singles in various variations (vinyl/CD and U.S./U.K).
Considering that 7 of the 14 Rubber Soul tracks were remixed for the updated Red compilation… representing perhaps the best songs on Rubber Soul… they kind of shot their wad for an upcoming album remix project, if one is ever planned. Did Giles remix the whole album while he was at it… or did he stop with just those 7 tracks? Would love to know. I am looking forward to true official stereo mixes of Love Me Do and She Loves You. There have been some excellent fan efforts to demix/remix the early tracks, so I’m wondering what the official efforts will sound like in comparison. I wish they had left covers off of these compilations, as there is simply too much great original material to choose from. I don’t mind the inclusion of Twist and Shout, but the other covers were unnecessary. Why not highlight other tracks like It Won’t Be Long, Things We Said Today, If I Fell, etc. Only one Beatles For Sale track is here. Why not add No Reply or any of the other excellent original tracks from this album? On the other hand, I’m okay with not remixing Free As A Bird and Real Love at this time. I kind of like the ghostly-sounding vocals from John. He sounds like he’s singing from a faraway dimension, which works for those tracks.
I agree with the several comments regarding the omission of 'Rain.' Where is 'Yes it Is'? It's simply gorgeous, a great song with a plaintive Lennon vocal, beautifully harmonised.
Really excited for these new releases. My first 2 Beatles albums were the Red Album, on red vinyl and the Blue album on blue vinyl 😃Way back in the 1970's...
I can’t wait for the new Beatles releases especially Now And Then. Also keep up the good work Matt keep up the good videos and I can’t wait for the next beach boys part 5. Also want to thank you for introducing new music to me like The Association & The Lovin Spoonful which now I enjoy very much.
Great review, Matt I agree with your comments, particularly with song selections with the exception of "Roll Over Beethoven". I think it is one of their best covers and was released as a single in some parts of the world, including Australia where I am located. "If I Fell" and "I Should Have Known Better" were also released as singles in different parts of the world, again including Australia (A and B side of the same record), so they should have been included. As you point out, they had plenty of room so why not "add more" rather than "provide less"? As for substituting "Within You, Without You" with the unreleased "All Too Much" - an inspired choice! Well done for suggesting that one. And I agree that "Birthday" should get a place on the set ahead of "Glass Onion". My thoughts on including the 3 "Anthology" era singles differ slightly. The Blue album is titled "1967 - 70", not "1967 - 2023" or "1967 - 70 + One". Rather than add "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" to "1967 - 70", I don't think any of the 3 "Anthology" era song belong on the release. I would prefer the 3 songs to be on a separate CD single and vinyl EP as an addition to the CDs/ LPs.
Always love hearing your insights Matt! You break things down so well and help nitwits like me totally understand what’s going on! Ha ha! Seriously, I loved your alternative song choices! That promo EP is fantastic too! Cheers 🍻 Matt
These compilations try to show the excellence of the Beatles and the different paths they blazed (which is why there were no covers originally), these are not typical greatest hits compilations. For this reason, I do consider it logical that Within you without you appears. However, given the impact it had, it is good that Twist and Shout appears also, but the other two versions are superfluous. And if I were to take something more from Harrison 62-66, I would have included I Need You, which was quite popular in European countries like Spain. It even appeared in an advertisement a few years ago. On the blue album, I agree with the ones you indicate are left over, and I'm missing Helter Skelter (it wasn't a great success but it is very well known and influential), Golden Slumbers/The End, even Because also. And of course Free as a Bird and Real Love. Regarding future deluxe editions, the first Beatles 6 LPs can be expanded with stereo & mono versions, outtakes, alternative takes, live recordings, demos or still unreleased BBC recordings. The first two LPs can be reconstructed as an alternative versions with BBC recordings. I would add to the Luxe version of Please Please Me the DECCA recordings (15 songs), which, demixed in AI and remixed in stereo, must be spectacular. The Star Club in Hamburg could also be added with the same treatment. And for the rest of the first LPs there are some excellent live recordings, which with the same technique can be remixed with good results.
I love I’m only Sleeping. When I first heard it on Past Masters, I fell in love with song. For the first time I am not planning on buying the box set …speaking as someone who owned the original albums (Pepper through the original Red/Blue albums, Later I bought all of the original CDs, the Stereo and Mono versions, Anthology 1-3, BBC Sessions plus most of the special release (Love etc.)…makes me wonder if I really need red and Blue in a new mix?
I always seen these as their version of Hot Rocks and More Hot Rocks, or vice versa, I’m not sure which ones came out first. I loved these when I was a kid because they were greatest hits packages, and they allowed me to dig deeper when I was starting my Beatles collection…
Great video Matt . Exactly my thoughts on Free as a Bird and Real Love . Crazy missed opportunity ! I’m going to have to make up my own Beatles Singles collection. ..
Blue (on vinyl) was my gateway, way back in the day, but I haven't spun it in years. I dunno, I don't feel super-excited about this; I can make my own 'mix tapes' (ha and often have, of course) Great review, Matt
The end of Beatles remixes/reissues? Of course not. The Beatles people will see to it that there will be some Beatles-related event or release every year or two, as has been the case for a long time now.
Great preview Matt as ever. My thinking is along the same lines as yours in terms of tracks that should have been on these expanded versions - a degree of placation going on behind the scenes I suspect. One thing, that for some reason, I have never come across was the JB intro to Help - will have to track that version down! Keep up the great work on the channel. Robert
I've always loved those two albums - when I was 14 back when they came out they were my gateway into the Fabs and I built my collection back from there. Initially I was going to just pick up the Blue album - largely to get the new remixes of the songs that aren't on any of the anniversary re-releases. Plus the later period Beatles is my favourite anyway. I've since reconsidered the Red album - I have the remixed Revolver and like many, I would love a remix of Rubber Soul, but I'm not interested in remixes of the first five albums; I love the way they represent the early to mid 60s mono and were straightforward rock'n'roll and R&B. That said, I'm interested in getting the remixes of these tracks and can save my money when (if) the earlier albums get the Giles Martin treatment. I'm not sure we old-stagers are the target audience anyway. 50 years ago they were my gateway albums. Now they can be the kids' gateway albums. IMHO Free as a Bird and Real Love should have been included on an EP with Now and Then, perhaps included with the Blue album as an extra.
Very insightful preview. I've seen a couple of interviews with Giles Martin where he talks about remixing Revolver using the same technology that Peter Jackson used for the Get Back documentary and music, and which was used to separate John's vocals and piano for 'Now and Then'. Giles and Paul may very well be planning to remix all the albums, but chose Revolver to start with because of its studio complexity, so it would really benefit from the new technology. Maybe you've discussed that elsewhere, or someone else has commented more in depth on it.
I'm kinda excited for these as I've never bought the Red & Blue albums on cd before. Even though those were the first Beatles albums I had as a kid. Given to me by my Mom for Christmas in 1975 and still have them. The remixes are definitely drawing me to purchase them. I agree about Real Love & Free as a Bird, would have been a perfect way to end the Blue album.
I would've chosen Happiness Is A Warm Gun over Glass Onion. I agree that She's A Woman and Rain shoud be on the Red album. And I agree, my expectations are low for Now And Then.
Thank you Matt. I definitely agree with you re She's a Woman and Rain. Also, think I may have mentioned this once, but I recall George Martin saying back in the mid '90's (in regards to the Anthology) that they had 'scraped the bottom of the barrel' for any more Beatles music!...Also, imagine Giles Martin getting behind a refurbished 4 track machine and starting to remix Beatle recordings 1965 style!
My first surprises after seeing the track listings were: 19 "red" tracks/disc, not 20...or more? "Roll Over Beethoven"? "You Really Got A Hold On Me"? "Within You, Without You"? "Glass Onion"? But I consider "You Can't Do That" and "Hey Bulldog" no-brainers. I have pre-ordered both CD sets and will be more than happy with them.
Good calls Matt! I totally agree that “I’m Only Sleeping” should’ve been another song. I would’ve chosen “She Said She Said”. I agree they should’ve added “Only A Northern Song” Or maybe “It’s All Too Much”. I also would’ve loved if they hand selected “Sexy Sady” or “Cry Baby Cry” instead of “Glass Onion”. I feel like they have highlighted “Glass Onion” on Anthology and Love and to have an album of such breadth as The White Album, it seems like a waste of space to use Glass Onion.
there are enough outtakes/alternate takes from Rubber Soul and earlier albums for additional box sets. See the Purple Chick collections as an example. Future: a proper release of Star Club and Beatles live stuff. You are correct on Free as a Bird and real Love but remember they were "redone" on the compilation Beatles 1+, but a treatment using the Peter Jackson technology would be interesting ...and for the future keep in mind " All you need is Cash" as the Rutles would sing....
The red and blue albims were the very first Beatles albums I ever bought as a kid and at the time I only knew a little about the Beatles but when I heard the red album, I remember saying to myself "wait, they are the same guys who did this song?" because I was just born when the Beatles came to the US but I subconsciously remembered hearing their songs on the radio. So, yes, I am buying the new ones because of those memories and the new remixes. I agree with you on most of the song choices. They should have I Should Have Known Better on there. Instead of Glass Onion maybe have Happiness is a Warm Gun. I think thats a Lennon classic.
I agree Dean! Now is the perfect timing, but what do I know....
Everybody is wanting those two demixed and remixed.
These have been done much much better by amateurs and Johns vocals sounds so clear and normalized. Perhaps they didn’t include those since the ones floating out there are so well done.
Only if they restore it to the Anthology base. I had the alternate vocal and guitar takes they added in the 2015 remixes.
I agree and it’s actually top of my list of things that need fixing.
I agree with the inclusion of "It's All Too Much", a great and innovative track that has never really gotten it's due.
Here here! Yes, It's All Too Much would have been infinitely better than Within' You Without You
It's a great song, but has never been given a great mix. That guitar needs to be cranked up more!
A huge "Missed Opportunity'!!
They dropped the Apple on this one big time!!!
@@michaelharrington75 Yeah, some of the best guitar work EVER!
Yes, I should have thought of Do You Want To Know A Secret, which went to #2 in the States.
Agreed re: "Do You Want to Know a Secret". I don't mind "You Can't Do That" (a GREAT song, and one of the few that John solos on), but not including "If I Fell" is criminal.
I Need You is another good Harrisong
@@yes_head yep. "If I Fell" is a phenomenal composition that features some trademark vocal hamonies by John and Paul, AND a lovely chord progression! One of my all-time favorites!
Matt, I agree with everything you said. How could this album not include Rain?
Why hasn't anyone bothered to mention I'm Down??? It was a concert staple and was historic with being at Shea Stadium!!
It’s crazy 😛
Them tacking Now And Then onto the Blue Album is so friggin' weird. It's called "1967-1970" and they're slapping on something written in 1979, worked on in 1995, and finished in 2022..... It begs the question of why they aren't just calling it "1967-2023" and also not including Free As A Bird and Real Love (both of which breached the Top 20 in the 90s).
Was definitely hoping they would remix Free as a Bird and Real Love and include them in this release. HUGE missed opportunity in light of the new tech they're using for Now and Then.
If they go ahead and do a remix of the Anthology albums, then you will get to hear those two songs like that.
Definitely would've been nice to have the 3 post-breakup songs on 1 record
@@EricSchultz-zs8hz Let's hope!
I would love an EP with all three newly remixed plus another compatible track (don't know what that would be, but only 3 tracks is awkward for an EP).
@@EricSchultz-zs8hz Not a fan of the Anthology albums because a lot of it is odd novelty stuff that brought back studio session memories for George Martin, but isn't attractive to me for repeat listenings. I'm not a fan of outtakes. Filler.
I’m excited to hear the new remixes. Especially Love Me Do and She Loves You in stereo!
Completely wrong. Not counting Beethoven, these are some of the best Beatles songs. Brilliant choices!
You can't do that is one of my favourites from that period. To me it's an essential song to include, but I can see why others are preferred by people: there are so many too choose from. Another song that could have been chosen from the 1963/64 period is Soldier of Love.
BOTH of those record were my "Gateway portals" to the Beatles...LOVE them both! I started with the Blue one though when I was 14, such fond memories..
I don't see the point of an Anthology remix, from Revolver onwards we've had a remixes and extra tracks on the box sets.
I'm sure they'll find their way into our purses😉
@@Martin_Siegel 100% Giles Martin admitted as much in an interview.
Within You Without You was groundbreaking. Indian classical played such an integral part in George's life. Compilations shouldn't always have to be 'Greatest Hits'. It's not the Eagles. But 'It's All Too Much' would've been cool.
I much prefer Within You Without You to Love You To and The Inner Light.
I’ve always lamented that ‘Too Much’ and ‘Northern Song’ weren’t added to MMT making a full legit LP and dispensing with Penny Lane and SFF.
Matt, I love your channel. If you could ever do one on the Small Faces ( both Decca and Immediate years) or early Fleetwood Mac that would be great.
Hello Brian. I have actually done a 2-part series on the Small Faces already. One down, one to go.
I can't believe they didn't include the Abbey Road medley!!! It's definitely a highlight of my own playlist.
I hope that project sees the light of day!
@@jeffreyroedel9804 Maybe instead of the red and blue albums, Apple should remix the Alpha to Omega sets.
Might "Carnival of Light" finally see the light of day on Anthology remix? Or does Olivia have to give her approval?
Agree with you 💯 about adding “It’s All Too Much,” and I wondered the same thing about this being the end of the remixes considering the additions to the Red album. As always, thanks for the videos, they are always enjoyable and highly informative.

'Please Please me' remixed 2023 should be fantastic. 🙏
Facts
You mean CD as well. I don’t do vinyl because of the amount of space it takes I do have over 800 CDs
Baby’s In Black She’s a Woman, and I’m Down were concert staples. They should have been on there on the Red album. Totally agree with Rain.
Finally someone has mentioned the omission of Rain 😢
Stole the blue LP from my high school library back in the early 80's. Good times.
I'm a middle aged curmudgeon! I've been getting Beatle release fatigue for several years.
I agree with your feedback on the new editions of the Red and Blue albums. They should have experts like you as an advisor to the Apple board.
Great review, Matt. Personally, having all the original albums on all formats, the only song I need now is "Now And Then".
Why only one song from Beatles For Sale? I would have wanted No Reply and I'm a Loser added to the set!
Great assessment, Matt. And thanks for this: "Rubber Soul, one of the most important rock albums of all time."
Its considered as the First in its kind in the format of the Classic Rock album.
Rain and She's a woman are great shouts
Matt this channel is so awesome, you do a great job with the material.
Thank you, Scott!
Couldn’t agree more about some those head-scratching blue album additions and the omission of “Free as a Bird” and “Real Love.”
The point of this release is to provide a gateway to The Beatles, much like "1" did before. There is no doubt that hearing the catalog with the new technology left certain impressions on the Apple decision-makers. The question is why were these songs chosen? Summary below!
I Saw Her Standing There (Paul's energy and familiar Paul tour staple)
Twist and Shout (energy/the legend of John's vocal takes)
This Boy (vocal harmonies in new technology)
Roll Over Beethoven (a George song/young George energy)
You Really Got a Hold on Me (vocal performance/groove/George Martin piano in new technology!)
You Can't Do That (groove appeal)
If I Needed Someone (George/beautiful chimey guitar clarity in new technology)
Taxman (George classic)
Got to Get You Into My Life (groove, horns with new technology)
I'm Only Sleeping (soundscape experience)
Here, There and Everywhere (pristine vocals with new technology)
Tomorrow Never Knows (soundscape experience)
Within Without You (George classic/legacy)
Dear Prudence (John/vocals/soundscape)
Glass Onion (John/energy/song texture in new technology)
Blackbird (Paul classic/staple/mandatory for guitarists)
Hey Bulldog (energy/Beatles' fun/just a great song overlooked for decades)
Oh Darling (Paul classic/upfront vocal in new technology)
I Want You (She's So Heavy) (Rock/Soundscape with new technology)
Now and Then (new Beatles' song filled out to the max with new technology?/doesn't qualify as '67 to '70)
I will summarize the choices like this:
1. These songs sound great with the new technology!
2. Great little rock and roll numbers representing the Red period.
3. Strong vocal harmonies from the Red period.
4. Groove possibly appealing to modern audiences from the Red period.
5. George Martin and Abbey Road's production and innovation on display in late Red period and Blue period
A very good overview, erestube. I appreciate it!
The irony is weren't the original Red/Blue vinyl releases timed for holiday sales as well? That's when I got them back in the 70's.
The stereo remixed Red Album is very exciting for me, can’t wait for that.
Thank you, John!
No Rain 😢 I’m struggling to wrap my head around that omission
A good report, Matt. I actually saw the listing of the songs here first. Thanks for the update.

The above listed songs would make a greater album than almost any other band's greatest hits compilation and yet none of these songs are included on the new and expanded albums.
Rain should be on there for sure
Really excited for these new releases. My first 2 Beatles albums were the Red Album, on red vinyl and the Blue album on blue vinyl 😃Way back in the 1970's...
I can’t wait for the new Beatles releases especially Now And Then. Also keep up the good work Matt keep up the good videos and I can’t wait for the next beach boys part 5. Also want to thank you for introducing new music to me like The Association & The Lovin Spoonful which now I enjoy very much.
Great review, Matt
I agree with your comments, particularly with song selections with the exception of "Roll Over Beethoven".
I think it definitely should include Rain, It's All Too Much, Free As A Bird and Real Love. But I'm gonna buy it any way. Great channel Matt.
You are wondering if an album titled More X was perhaps released first? 🤔
Agree with you entirely about 'Rain' ! Fantastic track .
Great video Matt . Exactly my thoughts on Free as a Bird and Real Love . Crazy missed opportunity ! I’m going to have to make up my own Beatles Singles collection. ..
Blue (on vinyl) was my gateway, way back in the day, but I haven't spun it in years.
I dunno, I don't feel super-excited about this; I can make my own 'mix tapes' (ha and often have, of course)
Great review, Matt
The end of Beatles remixes/reissues? Of course not. The Beatles people will see to it that there will be some Beatles-related event or release every year or two, as has been the case for a long time now.
Great preview Matt as ever. My thinking is along the same lines as yours in terms of tracks that should have been on these expanded versions - a degree of placation going on behind the scenes I suspect.
One thing, that for some reason, I have never come across was the JB intro to Help - will have to track that version down!
Keep up the great work on the channel. Robert
Dude, You are spot on.. I agree with your song choices.. She's a Woman and Rain. Yes..
Great video Matt, agree with you 100%.
You're spot on, Matt. Can't understand why people would fell for remixes, but not for great songs. Apple logic, indeed.
I love Its All Too Much. I would have preferred that to make Sgt. Pepper over the other Harrison track.
It’s all about the remixes for me. To hear the old four tracks w Demix/remix is wild. I can’t wait!
I remember the blue and red LPs from my gran’s house. I got my own in college. I wonder if the remix will be any better (louder).
Good calls Matt!
I totally agree that “I’m Only Sleeping” should’ve been another song. I would’ve chosen “She Said She Said”.
I agree they should’ve added “Only A Northern Song”
Or maybe “It’s All Too Much”.
Matt, your ideas are brilliant! Also love “It’s all too much” by George.
