You should've heard the version he sung at the LA Sports Arena (on tour with Sounds Of Blackness). It was 22 mins long & I ended up with a daughter 9 months later because ol girl was fired up after we left.

I have listened to this version over & over. I went to his concert in Philly, and this brings back memories. I am much older now. I would lover to get my hands on that 85 concert in Detroit. Thank you so much for bringing such good memories back. Followed Luther from the start.

This is the closest live version I've heard to the original arrangement. The only small shortcomings (IMO) were the apparent use of a keyboard instead of a grand piano; no strings (electronics); and a little oversinging. Still, a very strong performance that's just short of perfect.

I've been privileged to see luther in concert 9 times mostly all him, and I've seen him with Anita, En Vogue, and Boys To Men, this performance is nice, but the Anaheim performance is special! th-cam.com/video/1yRYDr_Yuwg/w-d-xo.html . Peace!
No question about the Anaheim performance.... but to me, the best one I've witnessed, was at the Hollywood Bowl, when he sang Superstar for over 20 mins. The one at The LA Sports Arena, & the one in Irvine? Those stand out also, but the Hollywood Bowl version was something else. Usually, Luther kept it the versions the same, so it was easy to predict & mimic what was coming next. And the women I went with, would look at me crazy, wondering how I knew what was coming next? Hollywood Bowl? I was happily molded during that performance.

@@kevbrown341 It was recorded..... problem is, I don't know who to reach out to, to get it. Here's where it gets crazier. I worked at a Juvenile Detention Center in '05, one of the most dangerous kids there, was in my unit. Since I worked NOC shift, I would bring in music to calm them kids down, so they could sleep. One night, I brought the video I recorded from the '94 show in Anaheim. While it's damn near in the middle of the show, this kid (I won't name him because of his Juvenile record. He's grown now) walks out of his room, & said "I was at that show, Luther is my Uncle!" I look at him like he lost his damn mind. I tell him, "Boy, don't play with me. Luther is like Jesus to me, don't lie like that!" He then started telling me what was about to happen in the show... I asked him how did he know? He said he was there, that's my Uncle! I still didn't believe him, but this was the first time, that kid opened up to anybody, so that was helpful. So now, each night I clock in, he's up waiting to tell me more stories. When his mama came for visitation, I asked her how was Luther doing, she said "he's getting better, he'll be out soon, my Uncle is a fighter." Cool. The kid was released almost a month later, 2 weeks later, Luther died. In October, after my off days, I hear the kid came there to see me (my schedule had changed to afternoon shift), but I was off. He leaves an Ebony & Jet magazine at the desk for me. Mind you, I'm still not believing this kid is related to Luther. I open both books, the Jet magazine shows Luther's family... & one picture outside the funeral home.... is the kid, with his mama. Now I'm stuck on stupid, because he was telling the truth the whole time. I look in the Ebony magazine, and there he is as a smaller child at Luther's house. Stuck on stupid again. He left his number, so I called to check on him to make sure he's staying out of shit. Luther's mama was there when I called, so yep... I was a fanboy at that moment. I ask her about any concerts she may have. (Yep, I was begging) She said they were gonna release the DVD of the Radio City Music Hall Concert that was released on CD. I ask her about the Hollywood Bowl show, she said they have all of the shows, because Luther recorded his shows to critique. I knew I was getting my hands on it, but she eventually passed away too. At that point, I had no idea who took care of his estate..... and have been looking ever since. Someone has it.

I also love Luther, I have "Never Too Much" on cassette. It's extremely hard to pick favorites when it comes to Mr. Vandross, but I really appreciated your story, so here it goes. "The Night I Fell In Love" is my favorite album, and "Promise Me" & "Make Me A Believer" are my favorite songs. Thanks! Peace!
@@kevbrown341 I've been involved in the music business since 1988, but getting paid every quarter didn't cut it with 3 kids, so I had to get a 9-5. I've met Luther plenty of times, & I asked a bunch of people about that show. I've even asked folks that are connected to Vanessa Williams, if she had a copy (she opened that night), i haven't been able to get my hands on it. One day I will, but it's been decades. Since you mention "Promise Me"... I have the live version, from the same concert in Anaheim, on my YT page. I had uploaded the entire concert on YT, but that page got the boot over 10 years ago. I have clips on this account, but not the entire show. Some people even took clips from the show & claimed it as their own, until I popped up & asked for at least some credit. LOL! You'll see a bunch of entertainers from the music industry throughout my account. I'm known for recording everything I can record.
