As an old age Pensioner I cannot afford to have a Teacher, so I have no alternative but to teach myself. However, in a sense it has been a blessing in disguise since I am forced to work things out for myself and that is satisfying. I learn from young pianists like yourself by watching Tutorials on TH-cam. Thanks and thanks and forever thanks, for sharing your own experience.
Interesting video! For the first 6 months of getting back to playing in 2020, I didn’t have a teacher because like you, I thought there is so much resources online and I wanted to learn at my own place by listening to my intuition. However, now I think it’s more valuable to have a teacher at the higher level - because you’d be learning trade secrets that you won’t be able to figure out on your own! I’m constantly amazed how my concert pianist / conservatory professor can perceive subtleties I wouldn't notice. Also, suppose you were practicing 14 hours a week, wouldn’t it be nice to share the experience with an experienced musician for one hour? You’d still have 13 hours of alone time 😆
Haha no I get it! I teach piano to beginners so I definitely see the advantages of having a teacher. If it was more financially feasible for me I would probably get a teacher as well but I’m still enjoying studying on my own.
Another benefit of a teacher is having (hopefully) a friend or mentor with whom you can discuss music and piano, especially at the level of completely subjective interpretation. Also, duets & two-piano works!
This is such a beautiful video. Very relaxing and informative (and inspiring!!). I can tell you worked really hard on this so thank you for this awesome video. I'm learning piano on my own from scratch and the number one thing that helps me improve is consistency. I'm not very disciplined in anything but I make sure to practice at least 45 minutes a day, and it's working great!
Thank you so much! This is definitely one of my favorite videos I've made. Yes! Consistency is so key. I'm glad to hear it's working out for you. Keep it up!!
Thank you for another great video! I have been teaching myself with no prior teachers. Just the desire to grow my brain and learn a skill- plus youtube! Its been fun doing it on my own, I have learned so much about myself during this process and I'm dedicated to becoming to best I can be at piano. I will agree with you that when I started incorporating scales and a few basic fundamentals I was able to excel much faster.
Yes! It made a huge difference to incorporate fundamentals into my practice. Sounds like we are very much on a similar journey. I’ve also learned so much about myself and want to continue to push myself and improve. Thank you so much for watching!
@@StanleyDo Yes it seems I am on a similar journey! Though without the childhood experience. I get my knowledge from people like you and others here in TH-cam. Thank you for sharing and giving us the opportunity to experience music in this way 😁
Hello Stanley, Congratulations for your videos, you are an inspiration to me! I started playing piano as a kid, like you did, and after more than 10 years I decided to start all over… it will be a beautifull journey 😌 You deserve more subscribers for the quality of your contents. All the best from Italy!
Hi Stanley, l love the content of your videos. I have a private teacher and he helps me to notice things that l can't notice by myself. Definitely having a teacher and self-taught are both a good combination to learn the piano. That's what l do! Could you make a video about arpeggio warm-ups? THANKS!
Thank you Adriana! Having someone notice things that you might not is definitely one of the biggest downsides of teaching yourself! It’s even more important when you’re learning the basics. That’s great you have a private teacher to help you with this! Thank you for the video suggestion! I’ll add it to the list.
Interesting to hear someone else’s experience. Out of interest, did you keep track of how much you have practiced? You said between 2 and 5 hours per day - but do you know in total? I managed just over 2000 hours in the past 4 years.

I’m not sure actually I haven’t kept track. I just practice everyday!
@@StanleyDo would you want to keep track? I have a practice app that you could try if you have an iPad
