Sam will probably not see this, but the micro frame skip issue is something I came across on the Fortnite World Cup. It occurs when we did a 1080i to 1080p conversion on Aja. Where a 0.1 frame drop would cause a full frame dropped through the live feed 1080i-1080p conversion. The fix was to change the broadcast input to 1080p.

Read about the U.S. civil war. You will come across a term called "the slows". Lincoln said the about McClellan. He wanted every thing perfect before he acted. He never truly acted because he was constantly demanding more, and his needs changed because of his perception of the Confederate army. A few other Union generals had this problem, or at least were accused of it.
I find myself committing this mistake when I play strategy games like Civ, Warcraft, or Total War.

I love the idea of using miniatures as sets for virtual productions. Miniatures used to be hugely important to filmmaking, even as late as the Star Wars prequels and Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it seems like no one wants to do miniatures anymore. They just model everything on computers, but this splits the difference. You can build your environment as a practical miniature and still use that to photograph virtually.

One of the likely possibilities for why you are having issues with the Unreal Engine, is that you haven't optimized the scene you are working with. Too many assets with high poly counts in one scene (without occlusion culling etc. enabled), will result in performance related issues.

they've gotta synchronise tracking data, unreal render and live plate - without TC/genlock to all of those 3 it's quite difficult to get a live comp without tearing, juttering or floating artefacts. timed data monitor in UE is OK if everything is running at same framerate but with film camera at 24fps and vive at 90 youre going to have a bad time. if you do work out subframe offsets to fix mixed hz to get an alignment cool, except if theres variability eg. video capture memory hiccup, vive hiccup, etc. small sub frames throws it out. variability a killer without TC genlock.

I absolutely love that Sam has dove head first into learning Virtual Production. Its an extremely new thing and him being so dedicated to get a grasp on it at this early of its life is going to be huge for their production company in the future. How many other Production Companies aside from the BIG BOYS you see doing it? Next to none. Sticking a Vive tracker on a rig to control your Unreal Camera with 3D characters in an environment is something little simpler that most can get a foothold on like what he did with Avatar 2. Its a whole different beast trying to figure out how to composite keyed camera footage of real actors into the engine and have it all tracked correctly. Most Big companies probably had similar ideas but said probly said, " screw that, we have the money to build giant LED/Projector stage that tracks our cameras position and perspective to sync with Unreal's environment in order to output Unreal's camera to the whole stage while correctly lighting the actors and everything". They showed some clips of that in this video. More and more companies are either renting VP spaces with crews to help run and troubleshoot issues on the fly or they're investing in building building their own VP stages and teams to save shit tons of money in so many ways and speed up production. Sam's method is obviously not as good but its definitely a good solution for what they're doing because they don't millions of dollars for something like the Mandalorian had. Im proud of you Sam! You've made it work to your constraints and I cant wait to see the final product with all the extra post effects done on top.
