I wish they’d shown Sirius’s scenes in this movie. The one where Harry, Ron and Hermione meet him in the cave and the one where he comes to Dumbledore’s office to check on Harry.
And where he says he's feeding on rats just to be able to be near Harry. Its hows so much of Sirius's character and the relationship that bloomed so quickly between them.
i dont agree. when reading the book I imagined him much more cunning, someone students would resepct and would even be afraid of. this actor does not make this impresion, yet he was a decent choice after all, considering that dumbledore actor sucks completely and vodlemort is making me laugh, nowhere close to the image of the most dangerous dark wizard of all time. I would really have liked Hugh Laurie as Moody instead
@@marianpyter5948 Yeah, Brendan Gleeson came off silly and campy to me. He needed to be more serious and intimidating. Hugh Laurie would probably be able to pull off the personality, but he is a little too handsome. They would have to do a fair amount of makeup to make him look scarred, ugly, and scary. I also hated Michael Gambon and Ralph Fiennes in their roles. Dumbledore seemed like an angry homeless person who shouts at squirrels on the street, and certainly not like the calm and subtle genius he is in the books. And Voldemort was like a ballet teacher who is a little extra.
@j-rey- I love your description of D. and V. Watching a H.P. video, so you'll know about D.'s childhood ( I have only watched F.B.a.W.t.F.T. so don't know how the D. story goes in the prequel series, not being a fan of the idea of D. vs G. being part of the story, it's a F.B. series so it should have been all about Newt. I'd have been fine with a movie of D. and G. just why interfere with the F.B. series?) becoming friends with Grindelwald and knowing who G. really was but not wanting to accept it, until the fight breaks out that hits his sister and not knowing who of the 3 fighters hit her, the trauma of that built up so much he put a Horcrux on to apologise to her? Or his parents? Yes, towards the last of V. he's dancing around, thinking he had killed Harry and gives a terrible laugh too.
yep lol I never knew about that stupid director until i watched this vid and he is so LAMO really, why did they even hire him? he didn't even see any movies or read any books. I think i would be a better director than him. This guy that made this vid has got a point.
Two questions 1. Who directs a movie based on a book without reading the book? 2. Who hires someone to direct a movie based on a book who hasn't read the book?
3. Who places in position of power a guy who hires someone to direct a movie based on a book who hasn't read the book ? 4. Who dares to engage someone who wants to place in position of power a guy who hires someone to direct a movie based on a book who hasn't read the book ?
I am absolutely shocked and appalled by what I'm hearing from this director in the behind the scenes footage. I had no idea. Makes me appreciate what a small miracle it is that the movie didn't turn out a complete disaster. Its main saving grace is the graveyard scene with Voldemort which I thought was brilliant and the scariest Voldemort ever was on screen.
He nailed the cemetery scene, and diggory's dad screaming out "MY BOY!!!" always gets me. But yeah, so much else was done so wrong. I think this movie was hard-carried by the cast moreso than any other. Although I truly hate what he made poor Michael Gambon do. The dude knew how to play Dumbledore. His performance in six was perfect. Calm, with a soothing presence, always ten steps ahead of everyone else, at once both comforting and mysterious. But under the helm of this director, he's made out like a raving lunatic.
I didn't like Newell's direction either and thought it was a disaster minus Moody's performance, Voldemort's return, Wormtail being a coward, and Mr. Diggory reacting to Cedric's death. I also felt like Rob had charm as Cedric. "Harry, take my body back. Take my body back to my father."
He was clearly reigned in as much as possible by the people around him who'd actually read the books. It is truly outrageous to direct an installment in a multi-billion dollar global franchise and not read the book over and over until you know the world inside and out. Or at mimumum be open to understanding it
the whole "i can't make a dark toned movie because the last one was dark" argument makes 0 sense. God forbid we have a consistent tone throughout the series smdh
It just boggles my mind that a director making MILLIONS of dollars acted like he didn’t have the time to read the book. That is so ridiculous. Put your ego aside for once
Another feature thrown in for no reason was Krum's glazed eyes when under the Imperius curse. That opens another plot hole: it makes it visibly obvious when someone is cursed.
Its just not corresponding to the original magic setting. And honestly krum felt like muscular brute with no brain in this movie, book krum was a bit more likable. And the quidditch scene! It would've been such a great game, the only world competition level quidditch in the book!
It doesn’t matter how anyone feels about the movie, what we can agree on is Cedric’s Father mourning the death of his son was soo damn real. It really broke me.
That was the one scene I felt was done extremely well. It really captured how his sons death completely broke him. In the books, you get so much of how proud and loving he is of Cedric and until that scene, they hadn't captured that really.
I think the weirdest part is the complete tonal shift at the end. Diggory has died and then everyone is just laughing and smiling in the next scene seeing the other schools off. And then Ron makes that comment along the lines of “can we ever have a normal year at school?” Like geez a kid DIED
Its only in a movie they didn't care of....in a book there is very decent and natural phenomena on his death and they have given a proper farewell.....the ending of book was very sad and full of agitation and mayhem that the dark lord has risen again.....read it you will find it intriguing!!!!
Honestly I think none of these movies ended well except for Sorcerer’s stone, Prisoner of Azkaban, and Deathly Hallows pt 2. Even the end of Order of Phoenix is so cringe. Like Daniel Radcliffe didn’t even believe his line and the other actors just smile awkwardly behind him. I’d rather have tension in the end than fake joy
Also they cut my favourite scene of the book which is when Harry is in the hospital and Dumbledore instantly reforms the Order of the Phoenix, like, we see Sirius becoming innocent in the eyes of the Weasley, we see Snape coming together with Sirius and indirectly Harry as well, and we understand just how a threat Voldemort is just by how quick Dumbledore reacted and reformed the Order. also, long live SPEW :(
@@addie-eileenpaige6460 yes I think I remember that, but it still was my favourite scene (and since in the book he was in the hospital during the scene, it could've been totally possible to put it in the movie from his point of view)
@@addie-eileenpaige6460 hm but Harry was there and watched it all happen. The scene in the hospital wing was perfect and really important, there is no excuse to cut it.
The part in the book where they described how Harry felt when Mrs. Weasley hugged him in the hospital wing made me tear up. But nah that was completely gone
@@Xehanort10 one of my favorites moments in book5 is when Harry tells his story to Rita Skeeter and Luna's father publishes it, is SO important for Harry and for the fight against Voldemort I still can't believe it was left out because they couldn't bother to add one scene in movie4 with Hermione finding out Rita Skeeter was an animagus. I know things have to be cut, for example I understand Bagman being cut, but this was important for continuity.
Cedric Diggery’s father crying out “MY BOY” after the death of his son is one of the most gut wrenching moments of cinema that I have ever seen. It changes the stakes and the mood of the entire series from then on. Kudos to the director, actors, and everyone else involved.
Imagine how lazy Alfonso Cuaron thought this guy was and that’s why he said “watch 40mins of my film (‘cause I know yo’ lazy ass ain’t about to watch the whole film)” like come on dude! Such an embarrassment.
Ok, ok. So... You're telling me... You're telling me that you were able to reread the goblet of fire to make this small review, but the director of the literal movie couldn't read more than 20 pages of it...?
@@PetitPoneyDuVercors26 "more than 2h long movies weren't that common as now" I would have to disagree. Sure, we have had some pretty long movies recently such as Endgame and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but 150+ minute movies were much more common back in the mid-2000s and 90s. HP, LotR trilogy, Titanic, Schindler's List, Hamlet (1996 version), Gettysburg, etc. Hamlet and Gettysburg were 4+ hours long, and I could not imagine a movie that long being released in theaters today.
@@elephant35e I should've precise that I was thinking about blockbuster movies made for kids/families Most of them are between 1h30/2h30 length I got the feeling that more movies tends to be closer to 2h30 now Long movies for adults and teens always have existed But for kids that's not common that was what I was thinking about A 3h30 movie for kids isn't view as a good idea for many producers for example (And with an hour more this movie could've been better), and some of the cuts from the book were for me probably made for economic reasons (Monsters, Dobby, etc) With a money based point of view it makes sense (cuts, humor, not too long, less fear etc...)
@Digonto Zahid Yeah, he did an amazing movie... completely different from the book to the point that Stephen King himself hated it. Not letting someone who hates a book direct its movie adaptation isn't only because it increases the chances of the movie being garbage, but because it's almost inevitable that that person won't respect the source material and therefore change whatever he wants to make it "better" in his opinion, since if he didn't like the book it's because he thinks there are wrong things in it that he would have no problem changing them.
@Digonto Zahid This isn't a valid argument. Harry potter is a series of films. First of all, a good director would respect the source material; Newell worked off of his pride, disregarding the tone set by the previous film and not considering the next. The way he talks about this world is generally disappointing, it doesn't sound he even likes it. Besides, Staley Kubrick is unlike any other director, that was uncalled for.
@Digonto Zahid oh yeah because it fucking worked amazingly with Rian Johnson never seeing Star Wars while deciding to Burn everything that came before it
@@DanielGreen0 Yeah, he didn't care about how his movie would fit in the series. I mean, he still could have gone the dark route as he planned to, I see no reason as to not doing so, just because the previous one was too
What made me laugh/groan was when Dumbledore said "Barty sent him(his son) to Azkaban. It nearly destroyed him to do it" Dumbledore makes it out that Crouch really didn't want to send his son to prison, while in the books he did it without hesitation.
Think it's more realistic and inspiring in the movie, who willingly and without hesitation sends their son to prison? Barty Crouch loves his son but still knew his responsibility and did it which is a better character trait and action than in the book.
Bruno Barcelos I know right! Not to mention that in Deathly Hallows part 1 Ron and Hermione know who Dobby is despite the fact that they have never met him.
This movie had the impeccable ability to make everything that wasn't very important a massively long scene, while everything that truly mattered was rushed over or cut. This movie came across like someone had a train to catch.
Rita being a bug was really cool coz until that point, it wasnt stated animagi could be things other than animals but later it's explained your animal form is based off your personality so her being a dung beetle is fuckimg brilliant
Idk if this is just me, but I feel like Ron would write 1 page (because he has the time, but is too lazy to write more) and Harry wouldn't do anything because something important would come up (triwizard tournament clue, scar telling him something, voldemort, quidditch etc).
Um, you could also apply that to the entire Bourne series. I've read the Jason Bourne books and except for the first movie, they have NOTHING in common with the books. At least the Harry Potter films had SOME connection to the books at the very worst.
Hate that they cut out the Dobby scenes, it lessens the impact of his death later in the series as he has no screen time from movie 2 until Deathly Hallows.
Exactly, a forest is a forest, the Forbidden Forest is a place in this world where plots happen before GoF *and* after GoF. Characters are introduced *and* meet their demise in this location in the series. But yeah let’s burn it down for a chase scene.
In Morgan's review about the Philosopher's stone, he said that the entire crew had to object to burning down the Forbidden Forest to talk some sense into Newell.
Totally agree with you about Dumbledore....It bothered me the most about the movie. Can't erase my memory of how gentle and perfectly cast Harris as Dumbledore on the first 2 movies - then suddenly switched to Mike who portrayed Dumbledore as aggressive
Harris wasn’t perfectly cast either. He was too heavyset and appeared to lack the intellectual sharpness as well as amped-up eccentricity that Dumbledore exhibited in the movie.
Year 1: Year of high voices Year 2: Year of voice drops Year 3: Year when things got Sirius Year 4: Year of no haircuts Year 5: Year where things were very serious but stopped being Sirius Year 6: Year of teen angst Year 7: Year of confusion
Watching goblet of fire, the depiction of Dumbledore was certainly one that bothered me the most. He looked uncharacteristically agitated in ALL the scenes. Now one of the most defining qualities of Dumbledore is that he is a very chill person and rarely let emotion slip out of him.
I think that's very true. One of the better moments in the Goblet of Fire book is when Hagrid relays that Dumbledore has been worried lately; it really communicated the uneasiness and anxiety felt through Dumbledore; that he knew Voldermort was going to return, he just didn't know when or how. Fear was a new quality in Dumbledore that we had not seen, and therefore it packs a punch in the 4th book.
I've been complaining about this for fifteen years. David Yates used Gambon a lot better, but you'd still get those Angrydore moments. When Dumbledore got angry in the books, something BIG just happened. The films kinda undermined that by making him this grumpy old curmudgeon who barked orders at everyone.
Leaving this movie’s midnight premiere, my best friend said, “remember the Spider-Man cartoons that we used to watch and an episode would say, “previously on” and then show clips from the last episode? I feel like I just watched a whole movie of that.”
Really pathetic he wanted the notoriety without wanting to put in the effort. Imagine directors who actually wanted to direct Goblet of Fire because they wanted to make a satisfying adaptation.
It always cracks me up how Cedric holds his wand as if it was a gun, complete with his other hand holding the "muzzle". I mean, its silly and it stands out, but at the same time i like it, i like how it hints that there are different "styles" of holding the wands
"HARRY DID YOU PUT YOUR NAME IN THE GOBLET FIRE?" Dumbledore asked calmly whilst giving Harry a tight hug, making him feel as though he was under a steamroller. Proffeser Snape had just invited them for candy, gave 10000 points to Gryffindor and took 10000000 of from Slytherin. Neville was successful in all his spells and had turned put even better that Hermione. Whilst Ronald Weasley had all of his hand me downs replaced by new ones.
Thats hollywood for you lol Why do you think there are so many bad remakes and takes on original source material? The golden compass, Avatar the last airbender, Ghost in the shell all ruined by directors who didn't even bother paying attention to the source material smh
as a little kid the "muggle mother" line always confused me but as i got older it seemed more in character for voldemort to just deem a mudblood as nothing more then a muggle anyway. i started seeing it as a much better line that makes more sense as u understand more about his ideology
Maureen Miaullis I know but it’s not very believable since it’s incredibly apparent that Harry did not put his name in the goblet and how clearly Harry doesn’t want to be in the tournament
Sean Kobarg Yeah, but Ron was never the most intelligent... All the boys were jealous because first, not only is there an age minimum for 7th years, then a 4th year gets to be in it. Ron even briefly showed interest in being in the tournament, and now his best friend is.
"The book is so thick, it's so long" if it's that much of a task to read it, they had audio tapes of it at the time, y'know. It's not that hard to listen to it. Heck, I've listened to it (as well as the rest of the books) several times in the last year.
Southern Style Gaming he’s a grown man it is not that hard to read if you can’t read that how would he even direct the other movies I mean read the first 3 books at least
Between Dumbledore being so hostile towards Harry that has reached meme levels, The fact Ludo Bagman, Winky and SPEW, the Quidditch world cup as well were omitted, it was my least favourite movie too. The actors however were pretty good, and the scene where Malfoy was a ferret and the scene where Voldemort came back was pretty good.
Yes. The fact that SPEW and Winky and Dobby never appear in the movies again until the very last one, it makes the final payoff of Dobby's death, Kreacher's turnaround and Ron's change of mind absolutely minimal. In the books, Dobby's death and Kreacher's actions are some of the most touching and moving storylines.
@@IAmOmniscient honestly though, cutting a Little bit of the elves story from this book was good, but they should have at least kept dobby. They should half also included him in half blood prince, cause there it would make sense. And yeah cutting elves altogether from ootp was a good call in my opinion.
To be fair, I don't think any of those subplots were fundamental to the overall saga, and the main plot of this film is already pretty convoluted as it is
Voldemort calling lily a muggle always confused me, I just assumed Voldemort saw muggle born wizard/witches as so inferior they might as well be muggles… but still thought it was a weird thing for him to say! makes more sense now knowing that it was because the director didn’t know the source material
When Cedric’s dad cries over his sons dead body, that scene still gets me every time. I also just really like this movie for the “everything has changed” aspect with Voldemort returning
FPG Matthew I agree fully with you. Amos loves his son so much and Cedric lost his life at a very young age. He was a really great boy who showed all of the priorities of the Hufflepuff house. He was one of my fav characters because he was very kind to Harry. Amos was very proud of him for completing the other tasks. And when he cried ‘That’s my son! That’s my boy!’ it completely broke my heart. It was Cedric’s death and Amos’ reaction that triggered my sensitive side and made me bawl and cry like a baby
I understand cutting the Dursley section but damn I would've loved to see the part where the Weasley's arrive at the Dursley's by Floo Powder. The interaction between the two was hilarious.
Fred & George saying "Naw naw Dad...We're _exactly_ where we want to be!" would have been great! (Or at least it's something like that...It's been a while since I read the book).
@Please Go Away Ginny is the literal definition of a "bad bitch/witch", and they show nothing of it in the movies. You don't even know why Harry ends up liking her so much because she's so bland.
It's bad when someone makes a movie without reading the book. The director made it for money, ego, and fame though nothing else. But that's the film industry. It's impossible to include everything from the book however basic understanding is required. If Newell didn't care about the book and previous films then no wonder why this movie doesn't address key issues. Dumbledore was supposed to ask Harry calmly about the Goblet of Fire. I like the dance sequence in this movie and music. Cedric's father reaction to Cedric's body was heart breaking. I love all of these movies so it's hard for me to pick my favourite.
I honestly didn't like the Goblet of Fire from the start. Dumbledore was becoming to aggressive, Ron was a bit rude, and it seems a bit rushed when it comes to the end. Like they wanted to quickly get to the end of the movie. And everything started losing humour. It got dark, even with the lighting lol.
Plus, hearing that the director didn't even read the book is just a trashy move, ecspecialy when you need to understand what happens or happened to a certain character.
Yes. They didnt put in simple things like dumbledore believing harry the whole time like he always has done and they also didnt put in MAJOR scenes from the books, like the scene with barty crouch in the forest
Biggest let down of the Harry Potter movie series. Where is my World Cup Quidditch? They overdid the Dragons Task. The Mermaid task was meh. The Maze task was just a joke.
The mermaid scene was done well but the only thing I didn’t like was how long it was like it just took way to long. I mean I feel that way with every task but the first one was just stupidly long
wildflower That’s why this video is so awesome and why it is without a doubt one of the most entertaining videos he’s ever made on his channel. It’s also without a doubt one of the best videos he’s ever made on his channel.
I liked Michael Gambon's performance as Dumbledore in Cuarón's Prisoner of Azkaban. So, with that in mind, I think Mike Newell is to blame for Gambon's misrepresentation of Dumbledore in Newell's movie.
"A seven year old could've told you that burning down the forbidden forest is a bad idea" Thought it'd be fun to ask my seven year old brother if it was a good idea and he said "frick no"XD
I asked my 6 yr old brother he were like "but what about the animals and other movies? Wouldn't they need the forest?" I was actually so surprised how he used his brain 😂
The only books that are too long are the ones that are boring, or those that change nothing about the opinions or feelings of those who read them. Besides that, so long as one is patient enough, _no book_ is too long!
Hogwarts: Does Triwizard Tournament, Quidditch, and keeps ginormous three- headed dog in castle Also Hogwarts: No they need permission slips to go to a *village*
Gambon: Did you put your name in the Goblet of Fire? Newell: No no NO! You call that acting? Like this! *Slams Daniel Radcliffe into the wall* DID YA PUT YER NAME IN THE GOBLET OF FIYAAAAAH?! Gambon: WTF
@@iamcleaver6854 the book is thick nonetheless. So a part 1 ending after the dragon trial would be good for a climax and setting how the Triwizard tournament isnt a joke, with a part 2 for the other tasks
@@tlotpwist3417 I don't think splitting a book is a good idea. It rarely is. It was written as a single arc and splitting it would absolutely ruin the pacing. Order of the phoenix was an even thicker book and it was made into a single movie without problems
Other stuff you failed to mention - 1) The movie makes zero effort to conceal Barty Crouch Jr's secret identity. In fact, they go out of their way to place blatant hints throughout the movie to expose Moody as BCJr. I mean, wasn't the whole point of involving Ludo Bagman so much in the book was so he could act as a red herring and hence avoid suspicion towards Moody/BCJr? 2) Also, during the first task in the movie, the dragon was tied up several feet away from the golden egg. Like what, couldn't Harry just hide behind a rock and use the summoning spell to get the egg like he did with the broom? He obviously couldn't do that in the book because the golden egg was conceiled among fake dragon eggs which was being closely guarded my the dragon. The hardest challenge about the task was to separate the dragon from the eggs long enough so one can steal the golden egg. Like wtf even is the point of the competition if you chain the dragon several feet away from the reach of the egg? Did they predict the dragon to break out of it's chains? If so then that's voluntary attempt to murder. 3) Since the director decided to remove Bagman's character completely from the movie, they tried to justify having Harry, Hermione and the Weasleys at the World Cup by placing them in cheap seats. Even so, how tf would Arthur Weasley be able afford to pay for like 10 World Cup tickets?! The only reason he was able to get the tickets in the book was because he was friends with Bagman. It makes no sense whatsoever for him to be able to pay for those tickets but not buy Ron a decent suit for the Yule Ball. 4) The maze was supposed to be the size of the quidditch pitch but the maze in the movie is like several kilometers in radius. In a maze that big, you could be stuck for days going around in circles without even realizing it. Even in the smaller maze of the book, Harry had to rely on the four-point spell to navigate around the maze and yet in the movie's giant ass maze, he just stumbles onto the Triwizard cup in like 10 minutes without any help whatsoever. 5) Also, the reason Harry insisted that Cedric take the cup was because Cedric came back to help Harry fight against the gaint spider when he could've just ran straight ahead and taken the cup. And Cedric insists Harry take the cup instead because he saved Cedric's life twice before. So it's understandable why they would want to share the trophy in the book but in the movie it made absolutely no sense for Harry to share the cup with Cedric. He was about to win but he came back and saved Cedric's life, the cup was his. Why tf did he try to share it with Cedric? Makes no sense.
Honestly, that genuinely would’ve been great. The last few Potter films, while not bad, felt a bit bland, not unlike many Marvel movies from the past few years. It’s hard to compare to the third film which is just radiating style
I love how you really break down the making of the movie and how it compares, and related to the books. You obviously do a ton of research, and are very much invested in your work and have a true passion for movie making. Greatly appreciate your outlook and hard work!
I dont agree, the third director wasnt as great as he put him out to be. A few examples are harry using magic outside of school and cutting out something as important and amazing as the marauders
@@tendyboiz1046 Not sure why they cut the marauders explanation either, but perhaps they wanted it to only be conveyed through hints. The movie has a lot of subtlety, after all. As for using magic outside of school, I personally prefer making the movie better to keeping in line with a book rule that doesn't even make much sense in the first place. I get it though, continuity is important.
As Fudge said that he wouldn't get expelled for blowing up his aunt, so I don't think lighting up his wand on his own under his bed covers won't get him expelled either. It's not like he hexed somebody or used a killing curse.
To the directors credit; I think this is a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging movie. That being said…the entirety of your video is correct and all it makes me is sad knowing a movie I already enjoy could’ve been SO much better.
Allowing Newell to continue as director after he made it clear he hadn't read and didn't understand the source material canon is a slap in the face to the tremendous love and effort Chris Columbus put into every detail up to that point.
It's weird how at the time, when only 3 movies were out, most HP fans hated POA, and when Cuaron was left of HP 4 they cheered. The first 2 movies were so faithful to the books, so the third got a lot of hate for stuff like changing Hagrid's cabin location, casting Michael Gambon as Dumbledore (fans hated that), removing the wizard robes & giving the students muggle clothes, casting Gary Oldman as Sirius Black (nowadays it seems like an obvious choice, but at the time it was highly controversial), and starting the trend of "pretty, beautiful hair, self-conscious, Hermione".
@@randallflagg3700 I loved the movie from the get go. Mexican pride had a lot to do with it but I thought it was an awesome adaptation. I thought it was beautiful. Tbh, it's the only movie out of the 8 that I watch in Spanish. Even the translation is awesome.
@@myoldvan119 lol you seem offended. And no. I'm pointing out my that my birth country and his birth country definitely brings out a bias that I choose to not hide unlike many might. However, my opinion is not solely based on that. The movie is beautiful. It's my favorite just like how it is many's favorite. Just because I'm Mexican doesn't discredit my opinion or make me about "tribalism". Alfonso Cuaron's work and awards speak for themselves. Example: Roma was a beautiful movie. So damn appealing to the eye. It won award based on solely that. Did I like the movie? Not so much. But there's no denial he makes movies look good regardless of the content. Americans are constantly proud of their fellow Americans succeeding in different areas, the US's culture is all about "Proud to be an American". Does that make them all about tribalism so their opinion doesn't count and is biased, stupid and therefore offends you? Because it should based on a look from your lens. 🤷🏻♀️ G O T C H A.
I think I can understand you. When I was watching GOF in the Theatre, I was soooo hyped at the Moment the Quidditch game was supposed to start… in the next Moment I was Standing and Screaming out of Anger, and I was not the only one in my row… I was pissed the whole rest of the movie.
I think they should have started splitting the films into 2 parts from GoF onwards. There just isn't enough time in one film to get a lot of the content in from such a large book.
Cutting out Dobby ultimately ruins his death (ruins might be a strong word but It's fitting in my opinion). After his first appearance in Chamber, Dobby appears in every book except prisoner. The trio talks to him. They exchange gifts with him on Christmas. You see him caring for Winky. You hear about his troubles finding a job. You find out his favourite clothes are socks and that he owns several pairs of them. You get a real sense of who he is. You get a tangible connection and emotional relationship with Harry. This is what makes his death in Deathly Hallows hit as hard as it does. Because you've grown with Dobby. You care for Dobby as Harry does. You don't get that in the movies though. Dobby was never around. He wasn't seen or even mentioned between the second movie and the seventh. Every important plot point he had is given to Neville instead (the Gillyweed, the Room of Requirement). Harry had no connection to him. He had no relationship with him. Dobby was someone he met a couple times when he was 12 and who caused him problems. That's it. There's no emotional attachment to him. His death is still sort of sad because he was a cute big-eyed CGI thing but it doesn't hit nearly as hard as it does in the books and ultimately you're left to wonder why Harry is so utterly heartbroken by his death when he has less visible reactions to the deaths of people he actually spent time with.
The last 5-6 movies (After the first 2-3 movies) really depended on the audience having read the books to fill in the blanks. This is why i love the first 2 movies. They are nearly exact replicas of the books on the big screen.
@@zjean3417 I agree with the first 2 movies being the best adaptations, but I can assure, that most people who hasn't read the books doesn't feel there are any blanks in the movies, because they contain the minimum elements to keep the story going, and the directors manage to manipulate the pace so the audience doesn't have enough time to think that something hasn't been explained.
As a person who never read the books, I didn't care when dobby died. And I actually think the CGI made it seem more unrealistic and stopped me caring even further. I wish he was either included more in the franchise or his death wasn't framed as so one of the most tragic deaths of the last 2 films, because it wasn't in the context of the films at all.
Since Neville showed an aptitude for Herbology, I don’t mind the “Neville giving Harry Gillyweed” scene, but Dobby and Winky should have been in the movie. They were very important characters, especially Winky because of her ties to Barty Crouch Jr.
The sixth one is my least favorite. They spent too much time on the romance when they should’ve spent more time on tom riddle’s story and also dumbledore and Harry’s relationship
They should have showed more of Voldemort. Book has a lot of stuff about his past. I was furious when the scene where Tom was trying to become teacher by convincing Dumbledore was excluded from the movie. It could have been highlight scene of the movie.
Oh my god yes. Like the 6th film was like: Just go to the theatre so the 7th movie makes sense. One thing JK Rowling did well is every character has complexity, even Voldemort, who is effectively the antichrist. That 6th book backstory deconstructs that so it isn't like he literally is...
Apparently Steve Kloves actually included every one of the Voldemort flashbacks in his original script but they were later cut.... I can't say they were cut specifically to make room for the comedy and the romance, but that's certainly what we got more of instead.... What's unfortunate is that the only absolutely "necessary" flashback was the Slughorn one, because we needed to learn about Horcruxes, so it makes you wonder what purpose the only other flashback (the orphanage one) we got was supposed to serve. What did it even do? We got to see Voldemort as a child. Okay, that's cool.... But what do Harry and Dumbledore talk about as soon as the memory ended? "Okay, Harry, now that we just watched that filler episode of 'Keeping Up with Voldy', you gotta let Slughorn 'collect' you. I know that sounds creepy and all, but trust me, it's for something really important that I won't even try to connect the memory we just saw to." What was the point of the memory in the book? To show that Voldemort, even as a child, enjoyed collecting "trophies" from his victims... you know, the very thing that he would do as an adult, but in the form of the items that we later learn about thru the Slughorn memory....
dumbledore in the books was always strangely calm. that was an important part of his character. way more calm than he should be in those situations which gave him this kind of serene aura. the dumbledore in this movie was literally the complete opposite of this lol
It's the directors job to tell his actors how to do the scene, so either Mike Newell failed to understand Dumbledore's character and instructed Micheal Gambon to act angry, OR he failed to correct Gambon when he interpreted the character incorrectly.
I think Mike Newell has to take the blame there. Gambon’s first Dumbledore performance in POA was on track to Dumbledore’s character, and he was getting the hang of it. It wasn’t perfect, but it was getting there. Then of course in the fourth movie its a disaster, but in the fifth and sixth movies, Gambon really starts understanding his character. The cave scene from HBP is unbelievable and my favourite Gambon-Dumbledore moment
@@andremeyer6596 100% Rewatched both movies and pure difference between Dumbledore in POA and in GOF is huge Dumbledore in GOF looked like angry teenager
The film is all like that - the characters are very emotional. Just look how Harry, Moody or Crouch Sr. are portrayed, they all seem angry and uneasy with what's going on. There's supposed to be conflicts, a sense of danger. I'm more unhappy with the plot of Order of the Phoenix, how Dumbledore avoids Harry, as if he was indifferent. The next film has a different tone, but Dumbledore just doesn't get adjusted, he stays eccentric. Michael Gambon wasn't particularly good as Dumbledore in any of the films, his gestures and expressions are too grand for the role. There's no subtlety with him as an actor, I don't see how it could've worked. They just didn't want a Merlin/Gandalf figure anymore.
The way the director said he couldn’t read the book cause it was too long really disgusted me. If 10 year old me could read that book then a grown ass man definitely could. Edit( Chile some of y’all be calling saying that y’all read it at like one 😭😭)
k g He didn’t want to read the book but he did it cause he was the director but his excuse for not wanting to read the book is because it was “too big” which is ridiculous and he did watch the other movies but was angry that somebody already did the dark theme before him and basically turned everything into a competition
The problem with Harry Potter movies are that you don't know why things are happening. The books explains all, but the movies are unable to reason the things that they are showing.
@@nightingale4786 Yes, absolutely, I watched all the movies without reading the books, so i was confused why people like Harry Potter! Recently I read all the books, and now I'm a big fan.
That's what happens when you make a book into a movie and in this day in age it has to be less than three hours whereas movies before used to be 3+ hours like Gone with the Wind
When you used The Dark Knight as an example of a sequel done right, I honestly started to wonder what a Harry Potter movie directed by Christopher Nolan would be like.
Probably Harry drinks a potion where he can't make any new memories so he has to magic spell himself into other people's dreams to stop Voldemort from blowing up the boats filled with prisoners and civilians
And danial wrote a simple 1 page that shows that show he is harry in real life cause harry has interest in studying but not as hermione and is not not into studying like ron

I think we can all agree on one thing though: Brendan Gleeson absolutely stole the show as Mad Eye Moody. Incredible casting for that role.
i dont agree. when reading the book I imagined him much more cunning, someone students would resepct and would even be afraid of. this actor does not make this impresion, yet he was a decent choice after all, considering that dumbledore actor sucks completely and vodlemort is making me laugh, nowhere close to the image of the most dangerous dark wizard of all time.
I would really have liked Hugh Laurie as Moody instead
did you really said that the actor of dumbledore sucks? lmfao you are crazy@@marianpyter5948

I didnt like how Voldemort moved around the place.
Or at mimumum be open to understanding it
The film was a complete dumpster fire
the whole "i can't make a dark toned movie because the last one was dark" argument makes 0 sense. God forbid we have a consistent tone throughout the series smdh
Seriously, what a hack
Right? I just want to tell this edge lord to calm down and make a good fucking hp movie. No need to get in a pissing contest with Curon

It just boggles my mind that a director making MILLIONS of dollars acted like he didn’t have the time to read the book. That is so ridiculous. Put your ego aside for once

That scene will _never_ fail to give me chills.
Yup
As a young child, that scene made me feel emotions that i didn't know i could feel.
It's easily one of the best scenes in the series.
I think the weirdest part is the complete tonal shift at the end. Diggory has died and then everyone is just laughing and smiling in the next scene seeing the other schools off. And then Ron makes that comment along the lines of “can we ever have a normal year at school?” Like geez a kid DIED

@@PetitPoneyDuVercors26 "more than 2h long movies weren't that common as now"
I would have to disagree.

I should've precise that I was thinking about blockbuster movies made for kids/families
Most of them are between 1h30/2h30 length
I got the feeling that more movies tends to be closer to 2h30 now
Long movies for adults and teens always have existed
But for kids that's not common that was what I was thinking about
A 3h30 movie for kids isn't view as a good idea for many producers for example (And with an hour more this movie could've been better), and some of the cuts from the book were for me probably made for economic reasons
(Monsters, Dobby, etc)
With a money based point of view it makes sense (cuts, humor, not too long, less fear etc...)
This movie sucked!!!!!!! Who the hell picked this director!!!!
I guess he never heard of audio books if he didn't want to read the book and I'm sorry it's your job as a director...
If a guy doesnt like a book, dont let him do the movie.
Exactly, the book was not hard at all to get through lol, it's really not even that long
@Digonto Zahid oh yeah because it fucking worked amazingly with Rian Johnson never seeing Star Wars while deciding to Burn everything that came before it

"Barty sent him(his son) to Azkaban. It nearly destroyed him to do it"
Dumbledore makes it out that Crouch really didn't want to send his son to prison, while in the books he did it without hesitation.
Think it's more realistic and inspiring in the movie, who willingly and without hesitation sends their son to prison? Barty Crouch loves his son but still knew his responsibility and did it which is a better character trait and action than in the book.

Watching goblet of fire, the depiction of Dumbledore was certainly one that bothered me the most. He looked uncharacteristically agitated in ALL the scenes. Now one of the most defining qualities of Dumbledore is that he is a very chill person and rarely let emotion slip out of him.
I know right
I think that's very true.

Forgot to talk about how ridiculous Ron is in this movie. He’s so nonsensically mad at Harry and it’s just plain bizarre
Ron was a little pissy in the book.
Jason Dyrkacz yeah but he forgave him sooner in the book and communicated how he was feeling a bit more
Ron was jealous since he thought Harry was holding out on him.

The actors however were pretty good, and the scene where Malfoy was a ferret and the scene where Voldemort came back was pretty good.
Definitely a highlight

@@tlotpwist3417 I don't think splitting a book is a good idea. It rarely is. It was written as a single arc and splitting it would absolutely ruin the pacing. Order of the phoenix was an even thicker book and it was made into a single movie without problems
@@iamcleaver6854 even the Order of the Phoenix had some problems.
@@merafirewing6591 True.
Other stuff you failed to mention -
1) The movie makes zero effort to conceal Barty Crouch Jr's secret identity.
Those are all very good points.
Good points. Plus (although he couldn’t have known it at the time) he got Cedric killed by sharing the cup with him
Sayan Andrews that wouldn’t have changed , it was the same way in the book
Also, how Barth crouch left Azkaban is completely ignored, and it was barely mentioned why Voldemort viewed him as his most loyal servant
Mostly good points but in the book it said moody paid for the seas in return for Auther helping him out in the ministry

Well am just glad someone else understands the pain that I borne while watching this thing
Because Dobby was Harry Potters, Jar jar Binks
Yess
They should have showed more of Voldemort. Book has a lot of stuff about his past. I was furious when the scene where Tom was trying to become teacher by convincing Dumbledore was excluded from the movie. It could have been highlight scene of the movie.
Yes!!! My favourite book but least favourite film!

Dumbledore in GOF looked like angry teenager

Sam Gallagher I think Seamus’s hair is naturally short
Before this video: I have no idea who Mike Newall is.
After this video: Mike Newall is the worst director in the world and I hate him.

You hate him? Because he mad a film that you don’t like so you hate him it makes no sense

The problem with Harry Potter movies are that you don't know why things are happening. The books explains all, but the movies are unable to reason the things that they are showing.
These movies still have a place in my heart, but if I revisit the Harry Potter world it is usually in book form.
i agree; ecept for the first and third, none of them can be watched without prior knowledge of the books
@@nightingale4786 Yes, absolutely, I watched all the movies without reading the books, so i was confused why people like Harry Potter! Recently I read all the books, and now I'm a big fan.
That's what happens when you make a book into a movie and in this day in age it has to be less than three hours whereas movies before used to be 3+ hours like Gone with the Wind
tbh the movie I like is the first.
It would be shit
Hermione would be deleted from the movie script

One thing you forgot to mention is that Emma wrote a 16-page essay, which shows that Emma is real life Hermione.
I love writing too
It was in prisoner of azkaban right? (correct me if I'm wrong)
Rupert didn’t because Ron wouldn’t have too. They all did they essay how their actual characters would have
And danial wrote a simple 1 page that shows that show he is harry in real life cause harry has interest in studying but not as hermione and is not not into studying like ron
@@katazodnem9841 Yes, Alfonso did that to get input on the actors' understanding of their characters when he took over from Chris Columbus. When he asked Rupert why he didn't write one, he said, "Ron wouldn't have done it", and he replied, "Okay, you know your character."
