ALRIGHT GUYS! After careful review, I think I stand corrected about Mr. Coils! Based on his CURL PATTERN, they do fall into the 4C category. His TEXTURE, which looks more silky, and the fact that his coils clump naturally is what can make it confusing (and what confuses me too)
But I think he is also part of 4C!
That’s the point of these vids, to learn and I’m learning as well! ❤️❤️

Super defined and tight are two different things, youre mixing up the 2.
4C hair are tight and mixed curl patterns, and does not bounce or show super defined curls unless with work or manipulation, especially not while wet!!!??!?!
His hair is super defined & bouncy, listen to him, he said he was straight out the shower, you can litterly see individual twists with his hair, remember the word mixed, 4C hair is are strands mixing together, not nappy, but if his strands are not mixing together.....it ain't 4C.

I’m 3C/4A and my curls has finally gotten to be moisture trained enough to show definition with no product. The same can be done for 4C is the necessary steps are taken. So if he washed his hair daily or close to it while he was growing out his hair it can help naturally define the coils

Here comes this pretty boy with hair that looks nothing like the majority of 4C hair on black women & the response is you black woman's hair is not moisture trained even though the majority 4C hair all look generally the same on black women...his hair is different because again your hair is not moisture trained???
That is unfair and makes no sense, because it creates a narrative of "ugly & nappy 4C hair" vs "pretty & curly 4C hair"..... hence defining different hair textures 4a, 4b and 4C.

This is what I hate about the 4c dialogue:
Hydration/moisture/water has nothing to do with texture. A silky texture is a silky texture. No amount of hydration (water) will turn a non-silky texture into a silky one.
Can a cotton texture be super smooth and weighed down? Of course, but hydration isn’t going to make it do that. A heavy product will. A coating will. For some, it would have to be extremely heavy. And for some, no amount of heaviness would affect their hair at all.
That’s why *DEFINITION IS NOT A SIGN OF MOISTURIZED HAIR.*
Y’all need to stop it with the patronizing and the insults for the sake of making a point🙄. Just because someone’s hair isn’t defined doesn’t mean they’re doing anything less to care for their hair. Think about what you’re saying and how unnecessarily hurtful that is. Most especially when you haven’t worked with a variety of textures besides your own head of hair. You are not the standard representative for an entire category.

For my gorgeous queens saying," Categorization doesn't matter", can I just correct you and say that it does. Why? because growing up, no one taught me how to deal with my super tight and tough 4c hair. In fact,I can take care of my wigs more than my hair. These 4c hair vids DO matter to us
As for the categorization part,I feel it's one of the MOST important things to be remembered by the natural hair content creators. I mean just imagine a girl with 4b/a mistakingly labels her hair as 4c. What do you think is gonna happen? Lots of us girls with ACTUAL 4c are gonna end up having unrealistic expectations for what our hair can do. Which ultimately leads to frustrations and eventually, demotivation.
This is why I think Texture is important when making a natural hair video.
    Thank you

    • @justayoutuber2573
      @justayoutuber2573 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Dream-Catcher the categorisation system is flawed. It was made by a white man who advocated for relaxers and probably knew a lot less about natural hair than you. Yet his system is sworn on by some people?
How would you define '4c' hair?
So many people say different things which just leads to confusion. If it's about curl pattern, then people with the same curl size could have course hair or silky hair, fine strands or thick strands, high porosity or low porosity etc.

  • @simplymonica6888
    @simplymonica6888 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

For those who are commenting about the first guys hair it could be his natural pattern. My hair is somewhat similar to his when out of the shower. I used to think maybe it was like that because I wasn’t detangling properly and hair was clumped together. I realized it was my curl pattern. I have multiple different patterns. The front of my hair has little to no curl. Almost a wavy straight texture. The back is a looser texture like 3c and the rest is like the first guys. It’s hard for me to wear mines out of the shower because it’s different lengths in the natural state but when I stretch it out it’s all even. Also I do not straighten my hair so it is not heat damage. My hair just has different textures for some reason. Who else have a similar issue?

My son’s hair is literally just like this guy’s. It is a very soft, very thick 4C that loves moisture & hydrating products/curl creams. With lots of water & moisture, his hair clumps into really small coils but gets puffier & less defined throughout the day as it dries. The longer the hair, the longer it will stay defined like that as it’s drying. His hair is really long so his shrinkage doesn’t effect his curl definition as much.

Ahh Salim! We held a live chat on my IG a few months ago. He showed us his hair and talked about his routine. His texture looks like that without product in it. It is tightly coiled 4C hair with an extremely consistent pattern. That said, the hair typing system is limited and there are likely other factors that give his appearance such an uncharacteristically 4C look.

They guy who made the hair typing system was just trying to sell some hair product. black hair is like a finger print: it’s unique to everyone. I just call it “Afro-textured hair” or “black hair”. There are 4 factors that contribute to the diversity of Afro textured hair like :
Type (how tight or loose the coils are- the a b c typing seems to confuse people so I just refer to the type by the shape of the coil/strand. “S” C” and “Z” shapes seem to be the most prevalent amongst us)
Thickness (the size of the individual strands, there is coarse medium and fine)
Porosity: (how big/small the pores on the strand is that will determine how well moisture stays in the hair)
Density: how much follicles per square inch)
It’s hard to tell just by looking at it.
It’s amazing how the hair police divides us 😭
We can all agree our hair is unique and evolutionary and requires personalized care.
(I compare it to a cactus-they’re all different looking but they can all survive with minimal water)

The Green Beauty channel explains that each subcategory of type 4 hair has different curls/patterns within that. The hair typing system isn't just based on curl, but the behaviour of your hair. 4b is shown as a z pattern but many people who have type 4b hair don't have a z pattern. The hair chart is so silly sometimes. I'd argue porosity is more important, as long as you know the main category you're in (1, 2, 3 or 4).

I feel like the hair typing chart should be revisited because as far as I'm concerned based on the charts 4b hair is a zig zag curl and they associate that pattern with undefined hair whilst 4c hair is pencil size tiny coils. So if we going based on what the chart says he's not 4a/4b. Remember we looking at curl size not based on what our hair can and cannot do. People need to stop confusing hair texture and curl patten. People are thrown off because his hair texture is not the typical spongy or cotton like but clump uniform tiny coils. Also his hair looks fine and highly dense so it could be 4c that has been defined

  • @gabriellamarie7784

  • @zvezdoblyat

4c hair is typically attributed to have qualities that make it hard to retain moisture. That’s not the case for everyone. 4c defined curls look like the springs in a pen. That’s what his hair is. He figured out a way to retain moisture which means a lot of y’all 4c headed people can do it too. Not everyone tho obviously.
His hair is a coiled/ringlet type of curl
Type 4 hair has the ability to get s curls, z curls, and ringlet curls. Every curl pattern does, except 1-2

I think the big issue is that people think that you can get those curls from using gels when he doesn’t use gels at all. There’s this woman on Instagram (that_loulou or cicilovecurlshairstudio) who was able to get her daughters hair to curl the exact same way by doing something I think is similar to the Anthony Dickey method. 3:56 it's so weird to see someone w the same hair type/ pattern as me. At first I assumed I was 4b but I ended up coming to the conclusion that everyone's hair works differently so i was never really sure

Ok but his hair is 4c he probably just has high porosity and it’s super moisturized with a lot of gel 😂😂

@@VirgoGoddessXxo it wasn’t, my hair is 4A and my curls are larger and looser than his by like a lot

@@atmodlee sounds like you don’t know your hair type if that’s the case. There are quite a few ppl on TH-cam with 4a, also the hair chart for reference. You could be a 3c/4a mix. But yea, 4c curls do not look like that. My hair is 4b/4c mix and chizi herself is 4c. 4c does not look like that straight out the shower.

@@VirgoGoddessXxo they’re are different types of 4c it doesn’t all look the same and his hair is far to tight to be 4a

The biggest lie: 4c ≠ undefined
4c is literally a *CURL* pattern. If ur 4c hair isn’t defining there’s a chance it’s under hydrated and u lack a proper moisture retention routine. Iwis 🤷‍♂️

3:56 that's literally what my hair looks like! I'm always so confused on my hair type that I've just decided to give up (shrug)

Lols. I have curls like this guy's on some part of my hair. The upper back of my hair, very tight well defined curls. Just recently appeared. Its very smooth to the touch and feels silky. 4c hair that has received moisture overtime and fully hydrated can look like this. I wont even lie. Our hair needs and loves water and over time you would be amazed at the change.
