So what people fail to understand is that even within the so-called 4c hair category, there is such a wide range of textures. I have 4 sisters, we're all 4c, but each of us is a different type of 4c. One of us has 4c hair that feels like a cotton cloud, and another has hair whose individual strands feel as thick as wire. In the days of the creamy crack no relaxer known to man could get her hair fully straight. She'd have that thing on for hours, her scalp would burn, and it still wouldn't lay! The remaining 3 of us fall in the middle of that spectrum. 2 of us have 4b in the very front and the rest is thick voluminous 4c. The very youngest of us 5 has 4c throughout, but with very densely packed strands. After being loose natural for so many years, 3 of us now have microlocks lol. I say all this to say - 4c hair is a very wide spectrum. The categorization "4c" only describes one characteristic of a person's hair. There are other qualities/characteristics that could then make your hair much easier to detangle or manage, or much more difficult to handle.

My way of dealing with the pain of extremely dense thick strands 4c hair was to grease my hair really good and thread up my hair in 4 large sections the minute I walked in the door. I did this EVERY, SINGLE, DAY. After a while, especially when I got to bra strap length, my hair started looking kinky straight like a blow out even at the end of a long day. I remember a classmate of mine legit came at me for saying my hair was still 100% natural. She wouldn't believe it and I was so pissed than I refused to explain why my hair had become like that 😅 Unless I actually poured water in it you couldn't see the evidence of a curl. I feel like her hair is 4c. Looks like mine, and I have 4c hair. I know a lot of people don’t subscribe to the notion that the weight of longer hair can make the curl pattern appear looser. When my hair was shorter, I had much tighter coils.

Her hair isn't 4c, at least not much of it is 4c. My hair is longer now but i don't have any significant loosening of the coil as a result. My hair is like hers in most areas. From the moment i big chopped, my front and crown had a life of its own with like an 'S' pattern different from the back of my hair . it was loose, and always till this day looks blow dried. I cut it so many times thinking it was damaged until i realised it was just a different texture to the rest.

Anyone who did a big chop, started from a TWA and progressed to armpit length or longer can attest to this. The weight of my hair definitely stretched out my curl. It would still shrink up tight if I wet it and left it to dry without stretching; but no way as tight as when it was a TWA.

@@sedsa097 I completely agree. I made a comment about this very thing somewhere else in this comment section. It's the products and the constant stretching. I like to think that hair types are like skin tones. For example, skin tones highly vary and don't just come in 'light, medium, and dark.' Same with hair textures. Type 4 hair has a lot of variation and is does not strictly fit into just three categories we call a, b, and c. Many people have multiple curl patterns and textures throughout their hair. I think putting type 4 hair into strict boxes can make it even more confusing for naturals just trying to figure out how to best care for their hair when their hair does not exactly fit in any one of the categories. Skai Jackson has beautiful, long TYPE 4 hair. Her hair may not be exactly 4c specifically in the front where we can see it, but keep in mind that 4c hair does not have one specific look. Other factors come into play besides curl pattern such as density, porosity, fine/thick strands, and texture.

I agree but we think it's easy because we grew up knowing what it takes to handle curly hair. People with straight hair think curly hair is harder to manage bc of how they grew up knowing that hair is easy and that its just hair. Natural hair can be easy for some but it takes a lot more than straight hair almost *always* . Its about perspective. Our hair is beautiful and might be easy for us but straight hair ppl are used to 25 min wash days and 10 min detangling and styling. We are also less educated about our hair from society so we all dont know a lot. We only know what we learned or were taught but straight hair ppl are taught and shown the simplicity of their hair, not the beauty and methods of natural hair. If everyone was shown everything there is to know abt natural hair nobody would struggle. Personally I found a way to take care of my hair that, in my opinion, is easy but not everyone has. And I also agree *NATURAL HAIR IS AMAZING*

To me the reason why people comment when our sisters whose hair isn't 4c but label is as is because
    1. Over the centuries we are led to believe we are ugly how much more our hair
    2. 4c hair isn't that easy to manage and not a lot of people really embrass it.
    3. To me the most important reason is because of the younger generation
Personally when I wanted to embark on a healthy natural hair journey and came on TH-cam I was specifically looking for sisters with hair like mine (4c). I was confused alot because I will see other sisters with looser curls label their hair as 4c and I sometimes felt like there is something wrong with my hair.
I just think TH-camrs shouldn't label their hair as 4c because it gets them views or whatever reason why they do that.
I think the black race we are beginning to love ourselves more, getting more representation and beginning to love our hair more especially those with very tight curls. For the sake of the upcoming generation let's not mislead them and call a spade a spade. We are not prompting our sisters who do not have 4c but label it as so because we want to start a fight or something. All natural hair is beautiful. But I just want to come on TH-cam type any video about 4c and see 4c hair. If you think your hair has different curl patterns or not sure or don't want a specific label just title the video 'type 4 hair' as @chiziduru said. I love Skai and she has very very beautiful hair but I will say it's 4a(my opinion I could be wrong). but if she says it's 4c then it is to her, the most important thing is her hair is healthy. If you don't like this hair typing study your hair, experiment and see what works best for your hair. Let's not let this divide us but help us appreciate and love our beautiful hair. ❤️

Skye definitely has 4C hair (or at least a mix of 4B/4C)
The hair typing system doesn’t do a good job of including factors other than the curl pattern/curl type that can have a huge influence on the way hair behaves.
It looks like Skye has very fine 4C hair, especially in the front. Fine 4C hair has a different look than coarse 4C hair - it’s more soft and fluffy than dense and spongy. And when it’s wet, it tends to elongate more because fine hair is usually higher porosity (so the hair absorbs water quickly rather than the water beading up on the hair).
Not to mention her hair is quite long - the weight of her hair probably elongates the curls and makes them look a little more defined (especially with a lot of gel like she had at the beginning.)

When someone’s hair is dry, crunchy and short, yall are so quick to agree that it’s 4C.
But when someone with 4C hair has grown their hair LONG, Moisturised and the curls are defined, yall DONT EVER wanna admit that it’s 4C.
Yall need to stop stereotyping 4C hair.
4C hair can be VERY long. People Moisturise their 4C hair, AND YES, WHEN 4C HAIR IS WET, YOU CAN SEE THE SHINY DEFINED CURLS.
    That doesn’t make their hair “3C” , It’s still 4C.
Yall see long, defined, moisturised 4c hair and think that it’s ‘Too Good to be 4C, definitely not 4C” no. It’s 4C. Yall just don’t wanna admit that 4C is GORGEOUS.
There are many different types of 4C, not all of them look the same. And 4C is A CURL PATTERN so stop saying it’s “not 4c” whenever a 4C person wets their hair and shows the shiny curls.
4c is the CURLIEST hair type on the top of the chart- there’s nothing that goes past it, it’s the peak of the kinks and coils, so respect it.
    Bye.

I’m glad people are saying this. I come from a line of licensed hairdressers..... this was never a thing in school, and your hair changes with age and hormones. And if you are growing it for long length, the weight/ density also changes your hair type. Stop the madness, we are just segregating coils and kinkiness. The important factors are density, absorbing/hydration some people need finer oils, some need rehydration and butters and creams, and some just need plain old grease. If your zinc is low or you have thyroid, or pcos issues the hair line, nape will be brittle or fall out. Drink lot of water.

As a 4c natural with a few 4b & 4a strands eye am realizing how important porosity is. Eye learned how to care for my hair so much more watching videos about porosity than hair type bc the length of my hair never matches the length of the person in the video. So it was hard for me to rlly master everything. But now, growing it out for the umpteenth time…eye’m better equipped.

I don't even know about hair typing, but one thing that I believe is that people identify with what is the majority on their head. I have 4c at my edges and some places where I can find 4a, but the majority of my head is 4b and I identify as 4b. Some people may dominantly have 4b at the back/middle section and 4c in the front in the crown and front section making them 4b/4c. Also, curl pattern and hair texture should not be made interchangeable because that's why people think that 4a has to be silky (even though it can be cottony/spongy) and why 4c cannot have ANY visible definition hence people thinking their hair is 4c because they may not see their curls at first. People are so used to seeing 3c/4a and 4b/4c mixtures which is why sometimes we don't know what 4c hair truly looks like or even another hair type. It's very common to have different curls on your head which can be pretty cool except when it might be time to detangling lol. That's just my opinion

The dishsoap really lathers so i usually have to cowash it a few times to get the bubbles out completely :/

I don’t understand why people are acting like charting here is a division. it’s important to know what your hair type is and how to better take care of it. In the process of knowing where am I here falls in this chart I was able to do more precise research and get more precise information that works better for my hair type. And I think it’s important for younger people or people are interested in maintaining natural hair to really needs know what hair type they have and how to better take care of that hair. At the end of the day it’s important to know that not all here are the same as important to know what works for you and Why works for you as well as better representation.
It’s not about dividing us and putting number as label label it’s really just so we can do better research more focus oriented research.
