I was so relieved to hear that Baby Larry is not dead. Just a teenager who is too cool to hang out with mom anymore.
They like to stay up late like human teenagers too. I have an old barn that raccoons use for their dens and around late June/early July every year I start seeing the baby boys walking back from the woods by themselves after sunrise.

IKR? These things cannot fight their nature. They are highly intelligent and dexterous omnivores who are happy to take advantage of any generosity. But they can cause havoc and you do not want them thinking your home is their home.
Not entirely the same thing. Coyotes hunt raccoons, and if that area is indeed an area in which coyotes are common, Larry is safer in an elevated house than out in the open.

That video has almost 50 Million views. His son (the main person shown in this video) has a fantastic YT channel called 'Rare Earth'. It's a travel related, documentary style channel, and worth checking out. This raccoon episode was on one of the episodes. It's at their cottage on Stag Island (St. Clair River - USA/Canada border).

They're actually pretty friendly by nature. Some started coming through my cat door about five years back and most have either just kept saying when they saw me and and two would come and find me to feed them something better than the cat food I've always left out. I'm not going to do it but raccoons seem to be a great candidate for domestication.

Years ago I use to go to a local Fire Station at night with a bag of popcorn and feed the many raccoons that lived in the woods behind it. They were amazing and so gentle. I would literally be covered in raccoons contently munching popcorn. They have such soft human like hands. Good memories.

My grandmother had a bunch of racoons around her house in Seattle. Granny treated them like cats and left out food. Good or bad they were the best fed raccoons.
There was once a lady who commented that she fed raccoons. And one day when she was like 5 minutes late, the raccoon took the food bowl and knocked it on the window, like, hello? Where's my food??

I love Raccoons. I have a few that come around and share food with the feral cats I take care of. There’s one cat named Smokey - he was born during the Napa fires - that really gets along with the Raccoons. At any rate most Raccoons at first will run away when they see you but after awhile they just hang out and become pretty friendly.

My mom has raccoon friends too. There’s three babies and a mama, then one that comes by itself, then we have a opossum family as well. They all have names. Despite my mom trying to distance herself, the babies literally love her. They stand at her window banging on it until she comes over to see them. They were stealing from our bird feeder, so we decided to make a feeder for them with raccoon friendly snacks. Occasionally they do get Fruit Loops (which we were told they particularly enjoy, by a wildlife rescue, funny enough lol). It so cute watching them do their rounds around the neighborhood, before stopping at our house to see my mom and sometimes get a little treat out of the feeder, or a drink and swim in the pond. On July 4th all of them sat in our pond eating hotdogs while watching fireworks. It was hilarious.

As a child my father ran for the Canadian army a golf/ski/curling club in Valcartier Quebec. i remember he left a window open for a raccoon to come and go as it pleased. It was a wild animal as well as this place had and still has wild domestic cats. I miss watching the raccoon eat and play and accepting us as normal to be near. They are really smart and fun to watch going about their daily lives. just expect to have holes in the walls.
So long as he's committed to long term feeding of local wildlife whilst not ideal, it shouldn't prove harmful if he sticks to unprocessed foods. Mostly it's usually best to only intervene with supplimentary feeding during times of food scarcity such as Winter or early Spring for wildlife. Long term supplimentary feeding can lead to disruption in natural foraging skills and overdependence on Human caregivers meaning that if for any reason the human caregiver/s suddenly disappear, overly human dependent wildlife can suffer.

But given that he said he was having mental health issues due to Covid related stresses I’m thinking that we should give a bit of a passes on these sort of lectures for awhile. When I lived in Bremerton Washington. There was a mama raccoon who brought her babies 4 years running to my back window and I could hand feed them cat food for 4 years running, till I moved. They have the softest little hands. And when they get riled up the mom would come over and scold them, and make him chill out 🙏💛

One late night a few weeks ago 2 baby coons came to me for help while I was on my porch. They were between 3 and 4 weeks old and small enough to hold with one hand comfortably. Damn they were cute. They warmed up to me instantly and by the first day they already started treating me like "new mom". (I gave the mother a chance to get them when I first found them, but it became apparent she was dead.) I've taken care of and raised dozens of types of animals, and dozens of those I found in the wild or it was the other way around like the coons. The coons are definately the sweetest, most trusting, and easiest babies to take care of I've ever seen, which went against the pre-conceptions I had. They're at an age where they are getting more curious now and soon they'll want to explore more. Their favorite activities include grabbing and trying to steal my hand for snuggles and naps, or climbing me and hanging on. Often times perching or lying down on my shoulders or the top of my back.
I call them "masked Tail Bears" That's exactly what they are. Their DNA is related to bears. Ironically, there's folks who still believe opossum and Raccoons are rodents. They're definitely not! Opossum are marsupials.
