Ok JB Weld but then sand it to shape it. I heard you say spray paint which is crazy because 2 part epoxy boat paint is way better and not much more than 4 or 5cans just for the bottom. Also epoxy paint seals up holes and makes the bottom super slick. You can buy a gallon of Coat It epoxy on sale for about 50 to 60 dollars. If you have any left over after a few caots. Flip boat over and use the rest on the inside bottom.....rivets and pin holes 1st.
I did a similar fix.. I used Qwik Steel and truck bed coating.. had a big leak at the back of my boat... I'll update on how long it lasted.. Great video!
DON'T use JB Weld..unless you want to do this again in a couple years. Find an aluminum rivet (non-pop rivet) and cover it in epoxy, Gluvit, and paint it!
You didn't prep the areas you wanted to fix by sanding and cleaning up with alcohol. You'd be better off using a punch or something like that and making a dimple in the metal. Then using a propane torch, heat up the spot and touch the rod to the boat where your leak is. No mixing, no fuss, and no more leak. Then...you can flex seal it if you want to, though it's not necessary. But I appreciate you taking the time to share your process. If you use the Alumaweld method, you won't have any more leaks.
This is a very dangerous way of checking for leaks. Every gallon of water you add to that increases the weight by just over 8lbs. Adding the weight of the boat itself, putting it on some plastic bins, and getting underneath it is an easy way to get seriously hurt
Ok 1st technique is just a band-aid grant it it will get a few years j/b weld does give, try aluminum brazing/welds Me for sealant it is Herculiner, my kids will be enjoying my puddle hopper after I am gone. Your technique is great no complaints it is quick once every season type deal. It does work and hold
Riveted Jon boats are very frustrating. I coated my old 1436 with steel flex. It leaked. Added jbweld to inside rivets...drip drip. Sprayed the hell out of rivets and seams with flex seal...no leaks. Many folks like me pick up an old Jon for a couple hundred for hunting and fishing. They're not worth sinking a bunch of repair money into
Great video, I would only suggest putting marks (grease pen or magic marker) where the leaks are so you dont miss any. I would hate to have to do this twice.
Wow JB weld and Flex Seal. Why not reset or replace the rivets and tig or heliarc the cracked seams. Watch some aviation repair videos on driving and bucking rivets. You can buy all the supplies at Aircraft Spruce. Seriously why post a video on a homemade temporary patch when a proper fix could have been done easily.
Regular JB Weld (not the "Quick" stuff) cures with a much higher strength. Unless you're in a real rush to fix your leaks and can't wait 24 hours it is always best to use the regular epoxy stuff rather than the faster curing stuff because you trade off tensile strength for a faster cure. Just so you know. But still a good video, thanks.
Chris Canning That will only be a temporary fix , it won't last ! Find the loose rivets , drill them out and replace them with closed end rivets sealed with water proof silicone made for marine use , it will last and you won't have to deal with the leaks again ! I have fixed many aluminum hulls this way and it is permanent ! JB weld will not hold under twisting pressure and water battering and that flex seal will peel off !
Why does everyone take out the seats in their boats ? Its there for more then just sitting on , shut if you ever ran into anything solid that boat would fold like a piece of tin foil ,,,, nice vid tho i gotta do this test myself

Their is jb weld marine that is made fir boat repair.. But gluvid is best. Also solder works great.
Worked good for use, figured it would work good for everyone else

Please do! It worked well for our John boat at the time

Great advice Angel! Everyone has their own proccess. As long as our leaks get fixed, and we are abe to get back out on the water!
@@CaptChrisCanning Yes, I agree. I'm not hating on your method, just passing on some metal workshop ideas. Be safe on the water and, "Tight Lines "..!
Be safe brother
@@CaptChrisCanning yes Sir, likewise.

Great video guys! I just purchased my fitst 14 ft. jon boat. Going to use this method to check for leaks, and repair them if needed.
Thanks again

This comment.... lmao

Taurus/Hipoint Enthusiast it works pretty well is done correctly! Thanks for the comment my man!

I fully agree with this brother! You are a smart man!
Flex seal. Lol. That might last two whole trips.
Thanks for making this video you guys are awesome. My cousin and I were stressing about how to fix some leaks in our duck boats. I'm glad I saw this.
Thank you! We appreciate the kind words
Glad we could help! :)
Really like the vid guys! Great solution. We need to go soon!

That's a great tip!
when using flex seal, is it better to use the clear version or liquid rubber sealant coating version?
Just personal preference. Thanks for the question!
Dont use it, you should check out TBN. He swears against it as well
Go Gators!!! Pleasant surprise to come to the video for a john boat fix and see that beautiful shirt you're wearing lol.
Go Gators! Thanks for watching
Jeremy Bedsole GO GATORS
Awesome video guys! This will come in handy one day i'm sure! Keep up the great videos!
Thanks Cody!
Maybe try flipping the boat and putting a bright spotlight underneath it and checking for holes at night.
That just has to much room for error, in our opinions.

Did anyone else know this was shot in FL before seeing his shirt...(nice video btw thanks for the tips!)
Thanks brother!
Jb weld don't work. Tried it. Only a temporary fix. It will crack and leak again. I know from experience.
Thanks for the video - I'll be trying it this weekend on my little 12' JB
+Jean-Marc Russ Good man! Hope it works out for you!😎
flex seal is liquid rubber it doesnt last more than a year
Daniel Rosenthal flex seal isn’t perfect but it does work. We’ve had some last for the past 4yrs.
Recommend using JB weld it’s amazing

SparkyMcBiff thanks Spanky! I’ve actually used the regular JB weld and you’re right! It does work a lot better. Thanks for the comment my man!
Does this work for the fiberglass jon boats as well?
I wouldn't do that. lmao
Jb weld ends up cracking and the leaks return. been there, done that. Best fix is to use the sa.e style rivets with sealant.
We will have to try that next time. the JB weld has held up really well, and is always our go to.
JB Kwik set doesn't crack it's flexible. But they didn't use it correctly. No prep work was done.

how long did this repair last
Paul Thurman about a year in a half and it had a small leak again
done that on my boat before I saw this. It is a TEMPORARY fix
A temporary one that last until the next year. Thats a good amount of time.
flex seal won't last
This repair lasted quite a while before any other leak appeared. Thats why we use the JB weld before hand. Thanks for the comment!

Back in the day we made removable decks for this jon boat. Where the seat was removed a huge deck went in its place.
fill the hull up with water...
Yup
Good
