A big gameplay reason for a lot of this is that they want to make sure Shepard always has two companions in combat. The ONLY time this isn't true (outside of, potentially, Pinnacle Station? I've never played that DLC.) is after Jenkins dies, but before meeting Ashley. Either Garrus *or* Wrex are mandatory - one is skippable, but you cannot skip both, as you require ONE of them to lead you to Fist. Then Tali is mandatory as well - this gives you two non-human squadmates. Virmire is the center point of all this - you lose access to both Ashley *and* Kaidan for a large portion of Virmire, thus in order to maintain two non-Shepard Squadmates, they need to make sure you leave the Citadel with at least two new Squadmates, as it is possible to visit Virmire before Therum. Thus, the two non-human squadmates you picked up (Tali and either Garrus or Wrex) become your ONLY available Squadmates if you skipped one of the two on the Citadel and haven't grabbed Liara yet. The two squadmate rule is *also* why Wrex will automatically back down under the same circumstances, without the need for any charm, intimidate, or even his sidequest. If you don't have Garrus or Liara, Wrex dying in his standoff would leave you with only Tali. The fact that this is the case may have been something of a last-minute "oh crap" realization due to the... somewhat awkward way it goes if you get this outcome. The way it's worded and even voiced, it almost sounds like Wrex is realizing mid-threat that he's contractually obligated to maintain the game mechanic of having two squadmates and grumpily and sassily backs down.
Yooo I never thought of that, but I would not understand why someone would not recruit every available companion. I suppose the option to turn them down gives the game more depth but at the end of the day, it is cooler to have more personalities on the ship.
This mechanic is also true in the Mass Effect 2 suicide mission. If you take Miranda with you during the shield escort scene, and the biotic in play is not a loyal Samara or Jack, then only the opposing crew member can die. This is because Miranda is required for the speech right after. In testing I did at one point, it's also impossible to have just 1 crew member survive the mission. I did a run where I wanted only Samara to survive the Suicide Mission, and two things happen. Either both my squadmates after the Reaper falls dies (And Shepard falls of course), or 1 person survives solo (Usually Zaeed or Jacob) in the standoff at the door. Then both meet up in the Normandy to catch you at the end. I assume it's the same reason, you can't continue the game without two squadmates. This can also be circumvented if Zaeed survives without being loyal, you can then kill him in his loyalty mission after the suicide one. Doing this actually lets you play any remaining side quests with just your 1 squadmate, so the game is designed to work with 1 or even 0 squadmates.

Nearly spit up my drink when I heard "Vas Nar Rayya". I'm like um... she's on pilgrimage, so there's no 'Vas' yet. Enjoyed listening to the rest of it though
Shepard had the right idea. Ashley is regular infantry, not SF and SF usually hate working with regular infantry. Tali isn’t in the military, much less SF trained, so again, Shepard has a good reason to not want her along. Garrus however, displayed that he had special combat training in Doctor Michele;s lab, so I’ve never rejected him. As for Wrex, initial impression is that he is a muscle for hire for the Shadow Broker. This means that either he could be bought off by buying off the Broker, or he himself could be bought off. That’s why I rejected him on the Citadel in my ruthless renegade play through. Turned out well for me, since I could trick Wreav, get the salarian stealthy dreadnought fleet and save Mordin!
I considered attempting to reject her in a new game plus since Garis had the ability to decrypt/open everything which was the only reason I used Tali, but I took her anyway. Good to see what happens if you do try rejecting her though.
There will be a lot of vids coming from many people again as soon as the remaster of the entire trilogy is released. Too bad they are changing too much in the remaster to make it worth me buying it again when I can still play the original trilogy on my xbox 360.

Udina knows that a Shepard without Tali will anger too many fans. That why he forces you to take her. What a clever politician (except when he is not)!
That's important in an RPG. There's so many possible reasons your Shepard could be reluctant or happy to take on Ashley based on their background. Like lone survivor, war hero etc.
I don't have a problem with shepherd making a sound and logical in character decision, I just wish the dialogue wheel wouldn't show up if every choice is the same. Like just let them talk I don't need be in charge of every single thing shepherd says.

I could never leave Garrus behind... Dunno, it was sort of a connection to the guy the the first time I saw him and rejecting him just wasn't an option after that. And in ME2, it was hunt to find him, and realizing he was Archangel was the greatest joy ever.
As much as I love Mass Effect, I can't imagine playing them so many times to find all the unique situations that could develop. Especially if that means skipping companions.
that's where youtube comes in handy ;) ...i myself once tried to just run around citadel riding elevators while switching teammates in-between just to hear those sometimes hilarious dialogs they do by themselves... still sure haven't hear them all - they do tend to develop depending on what missions you've completed...
About forced party members: When ME1 came out in Russia, it had very questionable translation. Dialog options during Ashley recruitment in Russian (re-translated back to english) looked like: - Хорошая идея = Good idea - Хорошо = Good - Хорошо, пошли с нами = Good, come with us That scene was turned into a meme "Лишний ствол" (Extra gunpower, as Kaidan said before). It was used a lot by haters to show, that ME1 is not an open-world RPG, as they hoped, but a railroad, with zero choice (a bit an exaggeration). The meme was quite popular, and even the game itself was often called "Лишний ствол" instead of the normal name.
I speak Russian and polish so I tried me2 in them just to test it. They didn't give me a voice option for Russian, only Russian texts and subtitles with English audio. I tried polish and I could not stand the polish Tali and shepherds voice they're do irritating, they choice the worst voice actors in Poland probably.
On my first playthrough I actually played most of the first game without Liara in my team. I just thought I had missed her at the Citadel (since most of the other team members were recruited there)
I still think we should've had a Batarian squad mate like Garrus did on Omega. That would've been great, especially doing a mission on their homeworld in 3. A real missed opportunity there.
I actually got that hallucination dialogue with liara because i didn't want to check all the 4 systems to look for her, and instead did the other missions, never thought it had another dialogue for that part
We all know every liara dialogue, we've all played Feros, Noveria, Virmire, Therum, in every possible order, the hallucination convo is hilarious but Normandy conversation makes most sense since only after you recruit her does the cipher become fully installed in your head
Or until you've gotten fucking exiled for the shit your father did which you had no idea about, but a cool commander from another species who didn't even care about quarians at all before meeting you just welcomes you to be a part of his team and his ship crew. Oh and to save the galaxy.
@@cjnf11 the "vas" part is reserved for the ship the Quarian is currently serving on. Serving in official capacity on board of the Normandy makes her vas Normandy, no exile or any other political stunt can take that away.

ok the thought of actually watching this seeing my beloved characters rejected hurts me so someone please just tell me what happens if we do this war crime
I've done a similar thing for ME2 and ME3. I killed off everybody but Zaeed and Kasumi in the end of ME2. In ME3, you basically get all replacement characters, which makes for interesting dialog. You can get Padok Wiks taking the place of Mordin and getting all excited thinking about Krogran ... eh, "reproduction". I wonder what the best "minimalist" play-through is, where you can get the least amount of characters to port over into the next sequel game.
actually the only way to finish me1 with only 3 squadmates is to reject garrus completely, get liara before virmire, where you can then get rid of wrex and after that sacrifice kaiden/ashley ...initially you _have to_ take at least wrex or garrus to proceed to fist

Nearly spit up my drink when I heard "Vas Nar Rayya". I'm like um... she's on pilgrimage, so there's no 'Vas' yet. Enjoyed listening to the rest of it though
guys dont worry she dont mind- bruh stop beating eachother up
I'm not even a Quarian and that offended me.
Huh. Didn't know that you couldn't reject Tali.
Thanks Udina.
The only time I like Udina 😂
The only time Udina is useful
HellGateChannel oh my god you just mass effect remixed the thanks Obama meme.
Good to know that theres someone whos still doing mass effect content nice man good job
U can keep doing it ill appreciate
Yeah will become important again with legendary edition 😁
Thanks!
Give it two months, you’ll see quite a bit of new ME content coming in from more creators.
There will be a lot of vids coming from many people again as soon as the remaster of the entire trilogy is released. Too bad they are changing too much in the remaster to make it worth me buying it again when I can still play the original trilogy on my xbox 360.
"Wrex is an optional squadmate, even though he's not optional in our hearts" true words! I can't imagine going ME1 without Wrex. Best powerhouse of a character.
So true. It's awesome having a Krogan Battlemaster as your ace in the hole
I have missed playing as commander shepherd and can't wait till may comes

2:00 - "Good idea. / Okay. / Fine." ah yes, the BioWare choice system.
BioWare: where choices they claim matter don't matter at all....
BUT THOU MUST!
actually these are rather different reactions... the only bad thing is that they don't impact your paragon/renegade score

@@GothicElf68 I just don't know really. But when I read that I was really glad I got to Tali in time and got really angry at the dead ex-Shadow Broker.

Your BBF Garrus is optional??
Your little sister Tali is optional??

I don't know what's more weird. That everyone looks so low res, or that Shepard keeps swapping genders.
why do they even give you three dialog options on ashley, they are literally just three different degress of enthusiams about saying yes
Because that's important in an RPG. There's so many possible reasons your Shepard could be reluctant or happy to take on Ashley based on their background. Like lone survivor, war hero etc.

usually evil options in games are atleast some what fun or satisfying (like having a giant power trip or taking revenge on character you didn't like)
this is not that fun.
These videos are awesome and the fact that they are recently uploaded for a 10+ year old franchise makes it that much better
It's a shame what happened to Jenkins. Would have been interesting to see a rookie like him react to all the crazy shit that happens in the trilogy.

@@tracyfraser-bingham5823 I see what you did here
I could never leave Garrus behind...
Especially if that means skipping companions.
that's where youtube comes in handy ;)
...i myself once tried to just run around citadel riding elevators while switching teammates in-between just to hear those sometimes hilarious dialogs they do by themselves... still sure haven't hear them all - they do tend to develop depending on what missions you've completed...
I never tried this...ever..not even thought about it XD
About forced party members:
When ME1 came out in Russia, it had very questionable translation. Dialog options during Ashley recruitment in Russian (re-translated back to english) looked like:
- Хорошая идея = Good idea
- Хорошо = Good
- Хорошо, пошли с нами = Good, come with us
That scene was turned into a meme "Лишний ствол" (Extra gunpower, as Kaidan said before). It was used a lot by haters to show, that ME1 is not an open-world RPG, as they hoped, but a railroad, with zero choice (a bit an exaggeration). The meme was quite popular, and even the game itself was often called "Лишний ствол" instead of the normal name.
That's really interesting, I love hearing about how games are received in other, non English speaking countries.
Months late, but... "Нам не помешает лишний ствол!"
I speak Russian and polish so I tried me2 in them just to test it. They didn't give me a voice option for Russian, only Russian texts and subtitles with English audio. I tried polish and I could not stand the polish Tali and shepherds voice they're do irritating, they choice the worst voice actors in Poland probably.
the way i played this game:
Ashley: "hey commander can I jo..."
Shepard: "go to my ship, NOW!"
Lol
A fellow individual of taste and refinement, finally! Okay, she can be speciesist at times, but she's just a great chara.
On my first playthrough I actually played most of the first game without Liara in my team. I just thought I had missed her at the Citadel (since most of the other team members were recruited there)
I gotta go back to ME1 and recruit Liara at the end. That was hysterical!
I still think we should've had a Batarian squad mate like Garrus did on Omega. That would've been great, especially doing a mission on their homeworld in 3.
A real missed opportunity there.
Would've also been interesting to see their reaction to blowing up the relay in 2.
It was not the Shadow Broker's men waiting for Tali but Saren's.
Nice job Big Dan....this is what I've been looking for ❤️
Thanks for sharing. Always wondered what would happen but wasn't even prepared to do a playthrough to find out!
I’m glad you did this I was wondering about not teaming up with aliens cause Speciesism is big in the first one
I've never heard such a savage putdown from shepard, threatening to put liara back in the volcano after delaying recruiting her. 😂
Love you Dan! I love testing out different scenarios like these.
1:59 prime example of "but thou must" right there with it's three shades of "yes".
Man, watched this after playing legendary edition. Looked at Shepard and was like.....wow...he looks WAY worse than I remember, lol
Dan the Brave, the only one who's bold enough to make the decisions that even would make a renegade blush
I actually got that hallucination dialogue with liara because i didn't want to check all the 4 systems to look for her, and instead did the other missions, never thought it had another dialogue for that part
Thanks for discovering all this, keep up the good work.
Thanks, will do!
Shepard's Squadmates are what the game so special!
Good on you Big Dan for that closing line 😆
It was so abrupt and got a good chuckle out of me

“Tali vas nar Rayya”
**Tali fans didn’t notice that**
THANK YOU I was scouring the comments to see who noticed that
This Physically hurts
I noticed this too
Glad to see someone noticed.
i paused on that moment to rewind to see if i misheard and noticed that fragment is called Tali'Zorah nar Rayya, so i forgave :)
We all know every liara dialogue, we've all played Feros, Noveria, Virmire, Therum, in every possible order, the hallucination convo is hilarious but Normandy conversation makes most sense since only after you recruit her does the cipher become fully installed in your head
Tali'Zorah nar Rayya. Quarians don't earn the vas part of their names until they've completed their pilgrimage
These dialogue options break my heart
I have actually tried to do this before, but I had to stop when everyone I talked to wouldn't stop insulting me for not taking everyone.
I can’t help but notice the affection in your voice whenever you mention virmire

Hey Dan - I was watching this video when I heard you say you get Liara from Feros, when that isn't the case, You get her from Knossos in the Artemis Tau. I know its not a huge deal but thought I'd toss that in. For those possibly never seeing her before, knowing where to go, and needs to have that info, nothing more. Love your videos!
It's crazy comparing this video to the legendary edition. ME1 was a bit rough lol
The Liara section made me laugh my ass off.. I have played THOUSANDS of hours in Mass Effect. It blows my mind there's stuff I never even knew about STILL.
"This was big Dan. I should go."
Sheesh you had me rolling at the end.
Playing this series for the first time I have to say haven't been this invested into a RPG since I played FF7 way back in 97

Yo, Big Dan, cool content, thanks for posting! : ) And now I gotta ask: why are you running the PS1 texture mod?
Leaving Liara to last was actually what I did on my first playthrough: I had not realized she was a potential party member
RIP Jenkins
I've done a similar thing for ME2 and ME3. I killed off everybody but Zaeed and Kasumi in the end of ME2. In ME3, you basically get all replacement characters, which makes for interesting dialog. You can get Padok Wiks taking the place of Mordin and getting all excited thinking about Krogran ... eh, "reproduction".
I wonder what the best "minimalist" play-through is, where you can get the least amount of characters to port over into the next sequel game.
I mean the most minimalist I could see would be Thane and Morinth for sure
No point in rejecting garrus if he’s mandatory in me2 anyway
I like how the two optional companions were the ones I ended up squadding with the most my first playthrough lol
actually the only way to finish me1 with only 3 squadmates is to reject garrus completely, get liara before virmire, where you can then get rid of wrex and after that sacrifice kaiden/ashley
...initially you _have to_ take at least wrex or garrus to proceed to fist
You may not be able to do a solo Shep, but you can do a Girls Only Club. Female Shep, Liara, Ashley and Tali (I know Liara is nonbinary but still)
They're a blue alien that fucks you with her mind but everyone still sees them as female.
@@FizzySplash217 And all still see them as attractive, regardless of racial preferences. I think there was a line about that somewhere in one of the games, about how the Asari might actually be manipulating our perceptions of them somehow.
@@135Fenrir me2 there is a drink the vorcha like that takes at least part of the filter down and can see liaras "dad" as they truly appear. same map there is a krogan with an asari daughter iirc and they see the daughter as a krogan. yes there is some perception filters going on, seems automatic from the asari, not a conscious thing.
@@tracyfraser-bingham5823 Do you have a link to a video that shows this?
Technically the Asari only reproduce using their mind. They still have female anatomy because they need to birth and feed the young. They're female but reproduce semi asexually.
