I purposely left some stuff out in the spoilers section 'cause I know some folks will continue watching even if they haven't played it. There's a lot to discover and I recommend experiencing it for yourself (like what uncle sticky really did) :) (Not sponsored, just like the game a lot)
thanks tbh i meant to play the full thing before this came out but never found the time still watched this bcus your content is too good (how could you) but im still gonna play and finish the game 👍
The first time I played this game, I got to the Russian Roulette scene in the game where your party members can die permanently. Since I didn't think Terry was a very good team member I put him up first. To my surprise, he survived every round and I ended up keeping my entire party. It was absolutely hilarious, and I wish I had recorded it.
When I was also playing russian roulette I noticed that at the end of every game you can just go outside and save, so everytime I won I just went outside, saved the game so whenever a member of my party ends up dead I just load my save lol I'ts not that funny knowing that but it really helped someone as unlucky as me
I hadn't played a game where there was permandeath for my characters so the Russian roulette game got me shooked! Iirc Terry has like some high luck stat or something that can make him a good pick.
The first "Joke": Brad dropping a baby. And it had me in stitches. The timing, the tension release... And when I played it again... I had to stop. Because I realised how it so perfectly encapsulated Brad and Buddy's relationship: He tries, so hard, but he still fucks up, and hurts her.
@@Null_Experis This is something a lot of bad "Dark" stories fail to recognise. We need a reason to be invested. We need to care. If Everything is shit, why bother? Even 40K, the origin of the phrase "Grimdark", has a bunch of football hooligan fungus men to lighten the mood.
*”You’ve hurt me the most.”* That is such a strong line. Brad has been drowning in pain trying to do something good, and his results is that line. His attempt to try and do something good ends up with nothing.
It’s so hart breaking after seeing everything brad has done to protect her, especially considering what awful things would have happened to her had he never been there or never went to rescue her.
The line "you hurt me the most" was like getting punched in the gut. Like all the stuff you went through to keep her safe. She really doesn't know that men would savagely rape her like they did Fardy. The world is a harsh place, and she's given the excuse of being a child. But man that hurt.
I love how all of the party members you acquire in the game aren't people who are destined for greatness or part of some prophecy. They're just random dudes that Brad happens upon throughout your journey. Some just want to hang out with Brad, but others want to get a shot at Buddy, or are even travelling with him because he is holding someone or something ransom. Just because they're in your party doesn't mean they like you.
A lot of the area 1 and some area 2 party members end up having genuine moments and alternative motivations. Terry is terry and isn’t going anywhere. Same can be said about Nern and Olan to some extent. With Rooster your holding his gold chicken as hostage to have him join. Birdie is wasted 24/7 and is just down right op. Jack is just a magician and a lot of the others I don’t feel like listing. You get the idea
There's a part during the opening where Brad throws his remaining stash of JOY off of a cliff, after he has a flashback of Marty he goes crawling back to it. That really hurt to watch because I know firsthand how addiction can take control of and destroy your life.
Why I also rejoice at this moment is because it shows how our flaws are enforsed by trauma and bad influence. One of the main factors Brad even became an addict is the PTSD of his awful childhood. And there wasn't anyone around to support him. He tries to be a better person, he genuinelly wants to, but the world made him a broken man, and it's barely even possible to get yourself out of this pit of misery without help. How can one write a character as sympathetic as simultaneously terrible like Bradley Armstrong? Austin is a genius.
@@Somespideronline It does build character, but adding too much of it to the receipt and forgetting to mix it with emotional support makes the end dish result in losing it all, be it mind, heart, or life.
Brad is what happens when a man dies trying to fight his demons. Drunk on the idea that he can fix things, he throws himself into a desperate frenzy, unknowingly hurting everyone around him, and regretting everything. The fact that this is so relatable is another reason why I love Brad Dad.
@OVAH Lord He’s a good but broken man, stuck in a world full of broken and not-so good people. He never really stood much of change and that’s the saddest part of Lisa the Painful, because in a less gut-punching story he would’ve succeeded.
I disagree. I didn't like him. He's an awful person doing horrible things in his selfish desire to atone for his past. However, I can't really say I would be different in his position. Thus, while I don't like him, I understand him.
I personally really like Brad as a character too, he was just trying to do the right thing. He just wasn't able to do it good enough. He did honestly care though, which I can whole-heartedly respect. Brad's a homie ,a drugged up homie, but a homie nonetheless.
Don't forget that Brad was also trying to kick his addiction! Brad can go through the whole game choosing not to take joy, for Buddy's sake and to better himself. Kinda sucks that urick didn't mention that.
@@RandomPerson-tn2ck I guess, I dunno if there's any confirmation from the creator whether Brad going joyless is canon or not. Also that last point is on Buzzo not Brad lol
@@AdmiralChimp Buzzo shares with Brad the blaming of Brad over Lisa. neither are really justified, but both deal with this grief in extremely destructive ways. Regardless of attempting to kick the habit, the game starts with enough times Brad took the drug to result in the mutation. He's gone over the edge, good intentions or not. Which is kinda the main point of the plot. With or without the drugs, he murdered ALOT of people for standing between him and Buddy.
I wanna add an Addendum to this: Brad's final result in the game is Also influenced by the players decisions, and even who The Player takes to the final battle. **SPOILERS** - - - - - If you take to the final battle people like Terry or Nern, or just partners who seem like "nice people" in their own way, they will be affected by a Crying Status in a fight in which they battle Brad himself, because even they thought Brad was turning into a psycopath like the people they defeated along the way. Meanwhile, if you take people who dislike Brad, or didn't care enough about who he was, these characters will not care about Brad's well being, and will just fight normally. It's just a small detail that adds to the fact you impacted even your party's thoughts of you.
Then there are the characters like Fly; "I've always hated you...Brad." Or Rage; "I've wanted her since the beginning. What did you think was going to happen, Brad?" Like I kept Fly around because of how incredibly powerful he is but God, what a douche.
I'm not entirely sure if there would have been any healthy way to raise a girl in that world. A lot of what Brad did was perfectly reasonable given the circumstances
and even rand couldnt do it well maybe because buddy was already to far gone but random intended to protect her with everything he had till she was of age and then allow only the best men to have children knowing she would of course be cursed to bear babies her whole life but he could give her the luxury of being safe and choosing partners instead fo being brutally raped and ripped apart my the thousands of desperate horny men
True. Brad was overprotective but to an understandable and _almost_ rational degree. I mean, let's see: You have a little kid who's a girl. The world needs to be repopulated and if you *dare* let her be discovered, shit will hit the fan. Consider also his memories relating to his sister. I honestly think I would do as he did, even though this may not have been the right way to go on about things. The thing that I criticized most about Brad's dad behavior was forcing Lisa to kill to learn how to fight. Ironically, that is the decision that both makes her an insensitive monster AND a powerful warrior by the end.
In the intro there's a scene where hes unconscious due to drugs and alcohol and Lisa is crying in the basement. also it's because of his drug addiction he wasn't there to protect Lisa when she got taken.
The funny thing is everyone, particularly Sticky and Rick, were preaching about saving the world and Brad not being good for Buddy, but Brad did have one point. Buddy's just a girl; she's not even reached adulthood yet. They grew impatient and rushed to a conclusion, and it's true Brad was keeping her ignorant even for her age, but there was a good chance she physically wasn't ready to 'save humanity' and it's perfectly possible Brad would've been more supportive had she grown more. All delivering her to Rando before she was ready was going to do was change parents; it didn't accelerate the process or anything. Him teaching her to fight was simply a necessary step for surviving in a destroyed world. Damaging, but she needed it and would probably have died without it.
I feel like LISA isn't given the praise it deserves, due to the darker topic's in the story but it's really not as bad as it is made out to be. It's depressing and sad but has some funny humors moments too. The best part about it is on steam the only description it get's is The miserable journey of a broken man... this doesn't spoil anything and still gives you a good idea of the story
I wish Lisa got more recognition, as well as the good fan made games based on Lisa, like Lisa the Hopeful and Lisa the Pointless (except Escape from Detroit, that game shouldn't exist)
@@D3athScythe96 The Painful does deserve recognition (I nearly cried at the end), however I can't say the same for Joyful, because it felt bland, sloppy and it made me hate Buddy more.
The most compelling about Brad is that his flaws are understandable due to his experience in life. And it's ironic how in the end he basically another side of coin of the man he hates.
@@sarafontanini7051 I gave 0 sympathy when Brad saw Marty with Buddy once again in the Island. Never even give a single f*ck when Brad literally obliterated Marty's pathetic existance. I know it's just a game but I don't condone the actions of a child r@pist(I had to censore that because YT is a spineless piece of crap)like what Marty did to Lisa, even when he was acting all "goody two shoes" towards Buddy.
When I played it the first time I was kinda sad near the end but then when I chose to hug at the very end, it fucking broke me. It took this game 6 words to break me down into a sobbing mess. No other game has had me so invested and emotional like Lisa had
@Cheese Legs how dare you Direct quote from the hint lord, end game spoilers "Brad... I've been a loser my whole life. Hanging around you have made me feel strong for once. Like a man... The first day we met was the best day of my life. ... Even before the world changed... Maybe you don't feel the same way... But you're my best friend dude. It's just this... Brad this is our future your messing with... I'm sorry. We can't let you do this."
The only time is when they use the fact that it’s sht to make people laugh, not actually make people feel for them, like how in cromartie highschool, they keep in all the animation bugs and cut a lot of corners to make the viewers laugh(they had really little budget so they made do and made a comedic masterpiece XD)
For all Brad's faults, for how much he's a product of his father, it's hard for me to say he did a whole lot wrong by his own hand. The apocalypse is no place to raise a child. His ultimate failure was his assumption, fueled by Joy, granted, that his Father couldn't change, that his father wasn't hurt as deeply as he was, that his father didn't also want redemption. In the end, Buddy is still a kid. Is it so selfish to want to protect her until she's an adult? Surely there will still be men for her to be with once she's well and grown, once she's able to make that decision, and not just be used and abused by the countless perverts who just want to slake their twisted desires, under the guise of protecting the future of Humanity. Brad did a lot wrong. He killed, tortured, and destroyed, all for a girl who wasn't even really his, who he was far too cruel to. But for all he did wrong, can you blame him? What else could he have done? Is it really right to just offer up an 8 year old to be raped and impregnated by the horny masses? Is that a decision anyone could make? Especially someone with a past lik Brad?
I think there is a line where when Buddy was "Kidnapped" the people who kidnapped buddy are a lot like Brad, if I'm not wrong, one of the main villian was someone who loved Brad Sister and when she killed herself he blamed Brad for her Death too. Meanwhile the group of people who kidnapped buddy are from what I've gathered, the few that are sane, they want the best of humanity and wouldn't harmed buddy, their objective wasn't to use Buddy as a sex slave but as an opportunity for humanity to survive and to maybe even give buddy a free life.
@@ALE199-ita are you talking about Buzzo or Rando's army? Buzzo didn't care for her, he also didn't want to hurt her. Rando cared though, I think that's who you are talking about? He wanted to let buddy grow under his protection, and let her experience life. Then when she was old enough he'd let her choose who to have relations with. Not like the other warlords who just wanted to use her.
@@franciscoreyes7653 Rando can't control his whole army though. Rando is an idealist and too soft for the apocalypse. His only virtue is he's strong. Brad unironically did the right things with Buddy, but he did them the wrong way. She NEEDED to be hidden until she could fend for herself, she NEEDED to be taught to fight for her life and defend herself. The problem with brad was his mental instability and lack of empathy with her, and treating her like she wasn't as ready as she wanted to be.
I wished you talked about some of Brad's backstory a bit more (like during the flashbacks). Because I think a really big moment for his character was when we see him teaching martial arts to kids. For those who don't know, spoilers. We start the scene with Brad doing painkillers, showing that he's had a drug problem for a long time and not just after the flash. We see that he shirks responsibility (or decided to bring the kids to the park to get his fix) and he dismisses the kids (I think it's important to note that he still tells them to practice their kata after homework. It shows that he still cares about martial arts and what the kids get out of it, but he still prioritizes his addiction). Then he walks off and finds a kid hiding behind a tree. The kid looks somewhat skinny and has a bad stutter. He's been watching him and Brad's class for a while now and was interested in joining. Brad says it's fine if he wants to join but the kid says he can't because he doesn't have money. And to that, Brad says he could join anyway. To me this scene shows that Brad, despite or because of his poor upbringing, is still an empathetic person. He understands that other people need help sometimes. That's probably how he got a lot of people to join him. And this also works with him turning more psychotic and focused on Buddy, because people you recruit later either force themselves into your party, or Brad forces them to help him. Because of the joy, he only focuses buddy, the one person he empathizes with the most. TL;DR, Brad has always been a decent person that struggled with his inner demons long before the story of Lisa began. The circumstances of the world and his relationship with Buddy turned him into a monster with the best intentions.
@Piss Harrison I’d argue that maybe leaving Buddy with Rando wouldn’t have ended too badly at that point, but otherwise I completely agree. Brad’s entire reasoning makes sense when you look at his life and the current state of that world. Brad is a broken man who knows how awful people can be, and was trying to save Buddy from it. That meant hiding her away, teaching her to fight and being extremely protective. There was never going to be a good option for caring for Buddy.
@Piss Harrison I'd say it's more... Brad did a lot wrong, but blamelessly. He didn't know Rando wasn't just as evil as everyone else. He didn't realise how he was hurting Buddy, and also turning her into a bit of a psycho with a god complex. He didn't mean to drop her...
It should be noted Brad's desire to save Buddy is also fueled by a selfish need to redeem himself over what happened with Lisa, and thus even his most nole goals are tinged by a darker, less noble motive. brad was always a selfish drug addict, its just that selfishness gradually overshadowed his nicer aspects, and by the end it was too late and he ended up becomonign a monster. But what did you expect in the post apocalypse of Olathe? noone's completely innocent, everyone has their demons, and many do fall to more wicked personas because of The Flash. There are no heroes in Lisa. Only fucked up men.
@@sarafontanini7051 Personally I'd argue that all humans entirely selfish, just in different ways. People donate to charity to feel good about themselves. People help others because they, personally, don't want someone they care about to suffer. I really don't think it's fair to say it's immoral to want to improve on your past mistakes, or to want to feel good for succeeding in helping someone.
@@sarafontanini7051 I’d argue that it was a need for redemption AND trying to care for a child. Brad’s reasoning makes sense when you consider that a female child is going to go through hell in a world such his, but yes he is a very broken man. A bit selfish, but that’s not his entire reasoning, and I think it’s unfair to try and boil it down to just that.
He looks kinda like kratos......which is funny, Kratos failed misserable, I only care for him because of how tragic and badass his games were. God of war 4 actually made me care LESS which shouldn't be the case and thats because God of war 4 is just filler for God of war 5.
@@raulrojas9253 Can't agree with calling GoW4 filler. Dad and Boi have both changed and grown quite a lot throughout their journey. Have none of that been interesting to you simply because the overarching world-ending plot of their setting hasn't been resolved?
@@launcherx2044 the entire problem of borderlands 3 stems from gearbox and 2ks shitty attempt at replicating a jack esque villain with an all encompassing impact instead of loosely tying the multiple planets and vaults to eachother with "substories" on every planet
@@jetaddict420 Agreed. It felt like you were playing a chain of DLCs rather than a cohesive game. "Oh, it would take an entire game to open the vault? Nah, now we're going to give you a bunch of unsatisfying vaults in a row with little effort to open them."
Dude the scene in Lisa: the joyful where she fights her image of Brad and her way of accepting him as her dad made me ugly cry. The music that plays in that fight still makes me feel like shit when I hear it.
"Buddy. Yup, buddy. That's the best I could come up with. Well, it's simple. You're my little buddy. I always called you that when you were a baby, I guess it just stuck. Brad and buddy. It sounds good to me."
Brooooooo SAME. That part is by far the saddest scene in the series. Arguably sadder than when Brad asks Buddy "Did I do the right thing?". Also the song from Joyful "Voices" really hits hard.
I liked how the first part (Mystics of Trash and Violence) deals with two people looking for stability and safety in a chaotic world. The second part of Pointless (Fools Gold) seems to ask the question “now that you’ve got your safety, what do you do with it?” And I cannot wait to see what happens.
He was just trying his hardest. Can't blame him for leavin' everyone behind. But in all seriousness, I loved this video. More LISA exposure is always appreciated by me and all of the other fans. Thank you, urick.
Just wanna let you know that your gasoline spit attack pretty much breaks the game and makes it super easy, even on pain mode. You're one of my favorite party members!
Stickie never actuality “touched” buddy. You seem to have implied that he did. In the hallucination where you fight stickie’s giant head. Everything said in the scene is just in brads head. The reason brad thinks he touched her is because of a misunderstanding between brad and buddy.
@@AdmiralChimp yea i was trying to remember where in the game it is clarified but i remember now. im pretty sure it is in one of the campfire cutscenes.
He implies cause the whole game implies it. Of course the game clears it up, however he said himself that didn't want to spoil everything, cause he knew some people who never played the game would still watch the video.
It’s still possible that stickie could have done something to buddy, she says that he never hurt her, not that he didn’t touch her. She could’ve been groomed. She’s really not in any mindset to really trust herself or others. It’s possible she sees what happened to her as an act of love because that’s what stickie told her it was. He could’ve groomed her.
@@mrcocoloco7200 "Oh hello there! My name is Nern. I'm considered the greatest historian of our time... I've gathered a wealth of knowledge about Olathe and what happened here. Many tales... Would you like to hear? Hmm... I wish you were more enthusiastic... Oh well, I'll tell you anyway. Let's see.... Oh right! It all started with what I like to call, THE FLASH. I was sitting with my wife, god rest her soul, sipping on sweet lemon tea. I believe it was homemade by my sweet wife, God rest her soul. Or wait... Maybe she bought it from the store in a bottle. You know, like a plastic bottle? Well hold on now, that would be ridiculous to buy a bottle of sweet lemon tea, then transfer the contents into a glass. Why not just drink it from the bottle? I guess maybe so she could put ice in the glass? But then again, making tea homemade would be just as time consuming, if not more! That sneaky bitch... Anyway, I'll save that story for later! So, I'm sitting on my porch drinking sweet lemon tea. From a glass of course, ho ho! When suddenly... A great strangeness fills my body... Something was wrong... I've lived many years, and I've never felt something like this before. Do you know what it was? Yup! It was my rocking chair! That wooden son of a gun stopped rocking! So I looked down and realized a little rock had gotten caught beneath my chair! A rock under my rocking chair! What a day! I decided it was time for bed, I had had a little bit too much excitement for one day! Hoho! I slid into my jammies, brushed my teeth, and said my prayers. As I was climbing into bed I noticed my wife, God rest her soul, brushing her hair in the bathroom. As I peered across the hall my body swelled up with emotion... "Why can't I be married to an attractive woman?" "Is it me?" "My bank account?" I'm a tall guy, I workout forty minutes a week... Is that not enough? Now my neighbor at the time, Tom Forknight, was very short. His wife, Karen Forknight-Plateburger... Yeah, one of THOSE women. Well, she was more attractive than my wife. I'd say she was a soft six, whereas my wife was a hard four. What's the deal? I thought women liked tall men? Why was Karen with him? Anyway my horse of a wife, God rest her soul, crawled into bed next to me. She decided to leave the bedside light on so she could read her book. It was one of her romance novels again... Give me a break... As if I don't already feel inadequate enough... Not only do I have to compete with Tom, now I have to deal with these fictional hunks! Ay yai yai! At this point I had already suppressed the urges of intimacy, I rolled over and tried to sleep. Her bedside light was only of minor annoyance. I was able to drift off... Then I woke up to a big flash of light. That's about it. I can tell by the way you're walking away that you don't want to leave... If you really want to hear another story I'll tell you. Once upon a hot summer night. Sometime in July... Was it July? My local grocery store sells really good eggs in July. I don't know why. Do chickens operate better in heat? Fireworks maybe? I don't know. I don't want to get off topic. Point is, the eggs that Summer were marvelous! Anyway, my wife and I, God rest her soul, went to a BBQ that night. It was held at Dale Spooner's house. Well, his backyard... Conny Spooner doesn't want people in her home, I think she's just an uptight bitch. So at this BBQ I see none other than... That's right, Tom Forknight... Now earlier in the day my wife, God rest her soul, had made potato salad for the BBQ. Personally I hate potato salad, I'm a mashed kind of fellow. Hoho! So I sat in the TV room avoiding her till the BBQ. Once we were at the party, I made sure to distance myself from my dumb potato bitch wife. God rest her soul, I just didn't want anyone to think I would associate with someone that would bring a potato salad! Anyway, Tom and his above mediocre wife were already there. And get this, they brought a fruit salad! With whipped cream! The nerve of those Forknights! Needless to say I gave my wife, God rest her soul, a couple choice words About whipped cream! Versus potato salad! God dammit! Son of a bitch! A real tongue lashing! Geez, you're kind of smothering me. I'll talk to you later."
Brad is incredibly easy to put yourself in the role of. Any normal person has a part of them that would risk anything to save a child, much less their *own*. And so his goal is immediately something you can sympathize with, making the realization of his wrongdoings toward the end that much more painful.
When he talks about “ denying humanity’s ability to bounce back” I started to think of Joel from last of us And his story with Ellie being the potential cure for the world but him seeing her as a daughter and himself not willing to let her die or be sacrificed for the cure.
@ボイス To be fair there was evidence in the first game that it might not have worked, and none of the doctors were wearing the correct protection to prevent infections...that and that’s not how funguses work. Granted two of those things were probably just oversight on the devs part, but I’d say there’s still enough there to plant a bit of doubt.
Brad is the best fucking character in a game i ever met, he is so damn good of a character, we ALL know Brad is not a genuine bad person, in my eyes, Brad did the only right thing he could do throught out this game, he tried he REALLY tried and cared, the world was a lost cause and so was Brad but Buddy wans't and HE cared about that, the world around her did not, i cannot get myself to hate him, and if you think about it, Buddy only got the freedom she so desired because of Brad's acts at the end of the game, but oh god a single comment like this cannot even scracth the surface of what a pack of a character Brad Armstrong is. Fucking love this character.
YES, and in the end his mistakes and his destrucción is what ends making rando a likeable character later, going from an ominous lord of apocalipse, to a weak boy, who grew in a World wicht destroyed his hopes everytime he tried to do something good, rando is my boy and he didnt deserve the bad things
@@twistergreen604 rando respected Brad as a master, father figure, and as person, until the end, THE character that saw the good and kind and selfless side of Brad the most, was Rando himself, even Buzzo in the end realized that Brad was not a BAD bad man, and he regret it what he did to him in the end, hell.... Buzzo fought THE MOST powerful joy mutant in yado's arsenal to save the person that Brad was striving to protect so much, i'm pretty sure Brad would forgive Buzzo for everything for that, and in the end, seems like Buddy will be a better paternal figure for the baby in the end than Brad ever hoped be could be, Brad is MEGA proud even as a mutant, that i can only bet.
Something incredibly bleak about LISA the painful is that the drug everyone takes is named "Joy". But that same drug just makes them numb to everything, peoples are miserable that not feeling anything at all is the closest thing to happiness they can remember
It's a shame that Joyful couldn't really be as good as Painful (in story and in gameplay), but I can appreciate it providing closure for our colorful cast of terrible people. Except Rando. Rando did nothing wrong.
dunno man I enjoyed joyful its was a good dlc and it tied an end to the story, it felt like the continuation of the first game even if you can't recruit any party members, etc. If they were just one big game I wouldn't even have noticed any changes
Terry will always live. P.S. I want to add to the fact that Terry is the best tutorial ever, due to the fact that he shows you that damage isn't everything. I'm the beginning he does less damage then the dog at the beginning, but overtime, he has so many status effects, to the point that he's the seco nd greatest support character, the first being Boe. So overall, Terry Hintz is the greatest tutorial character ever, even though he has the magicarp steryotype, which is when a very weak character that becomes very strong over time.
Unlike the others I felt genuinely so bad for Brad, even loved him in a bitter sweet way. I didn't feel irritated by him but disappointed when he failed yet acknowledged how hard he tried to redeem himself, with genuine loving intentions for his daughter... But I also kind of understood his motives and feelings... It was so powerful!
The fact that Brad was trying is what makes me see him as a misunderstood character. This game honestly made me feel so many different things. From anger to crying my eyes out to laughing my ass off. It was a well done story that I grew attached to along with some characters that team up with you. My fave boys are Terry, Garth and Birdie. Edit: I forgot to add this but by misunderstood, I mean Brad thought what he was doing was right even if it really wasn't.
Brad always remind me of my dad, I mean... in a exagerated way of course. My dad grew up without a father, an abussive mother and a scummy brother. He's always very emotional, very passionate and he had told me that he would kill if anything happens to us, that's something that never felt "good" hearing... sometimes he can get carried away with his guts to the point that he would be somewhat scary. When my sister left the house he changed, he missed her during the first months and during that time his relationship with his mother became sickening to the point that sometimes me and my mother wanted to run away because of his rampages, until that point he always swallowed his hate and everything blew up all at once. He's better now, he's a nice guy, he's not abussive nor violent, just very passionated and as time passes on I realise more and more how similar we are, he's just... louder.
Yo literally sameeeee tho. My dad doesn't usually get angry because he represses it but when he does he's terrifying. He's lashed out at my brother before and even to the point where my mom threatened to call the police on him if he hurt him again. He's always really gentle but sadly he has a darker side due to growing up with an abusive father and a mother that was helpless and didn't stand up for herself nor her children. He is starting to grow angrier like his dad though now that he's getting older, and tbh it scares me.
@@vi0let831 I know I'm late, but I second that. I would tell him that it makes you sad and feel distant when he lashes out, that you wish that you could help with things that make him that unhappy. maybe if you can show him you sympathize with his situation he will suppress the shame that usually keeps people who mean well from doing the work my mom was an addict because of her upbringing and abuse so I totally understand, but that's why I know being direct and communicative CAN work
the reason is because Lisa tries to tell a story AAA games try to sell a product and when you have a product to sell you can't tell and show sensitive topics if you don't handle appropriately and AAA studios are clumsy af when it comes to addressing sensitive things so they always end up being either just pointless shock value or mediocre torture porn
Not only is Brad living in the morally worst world ever, even before the flash he had a screwed up life, on top of practically being forced to become a drug addict, but then the game was like "Let's add the worst side effect possibly imaginable just for fun". The universe literally twisted itself to destroy Brad as much as possible. And yet he tried. And that's what made him feel so human.
Thanks for the shoutout at the end bro, really appreciate everything my fans do for me. Next hint I'm makin' is dedicated straight to you *- BlueTerry Pie*
Brad whole life was a set up for a murder rampage but life is never just one tone. It has out of place humor, terror and love. Lisa's world is broken and just like people
If the creator of Lisa ever looks into the comments; please consider porting your games to consoles. This seems like the kinda game that will never age and it'd give so many people the opportunity to play it
I remember being legitimately angry as I played through the ending of Lisa. I had grown to despise Brad over the course of the story because he embodied not only the same abusive behavior his father was guilty of but the selfish parent attitude of "I will let the world burn to save my child". I hated him but at the same time I still couldn't see him as evil. He did what he thought was right and ultimately accepts that he was in fact a failure. I ended up finishing the game three times to see all three endings which is a testament to how powerful the writing is in that game. It changed the way I viewed what makes a character compelling.
@ボイス There's no point in a vaccine in Tlou world. The world's gone to shit between maniacs, cannibals and faction wars. The fact that there is no real big organization (presidency, monarchy, whatever) set on destroying infected shows how disorganized the humans are. Since they know where the spore areas are, you're more likely to die by being attacked by humans and infected folks. Plus, how can they distribute the vaccine? Since they're in post-apo (resource scarcity), they'll surely use it as leverage against other groups thus causing more fightings. It'd be like Mad Max Fury Road where the one with the resources is king. Was it a slim chance or a big chance of success? I surely don't want to lose a loved one for a "maybe". Saving another life while risking your own is rather selfless instead of selfish.
Brad's a very tragic story. By the end he became an awful, terrible man, even worse insome aspects than his father, but there was still SOME good in him even if most of it was ruined by Joy. For a character who barely says much, he is indeed an interesting, compelling character, one who does terrible things we cannot condone but one with a life so awful and a desire selfish yet noble we can't help but feel for him regardless.
Im not finished yet but I don't think i have swung from "completely disgusted" to "what the f am i laughing at" and "stop the eye water canal" so fast and hard before.
You know a game is good when it tacks something onto you that is an objective negative and then takes it from you and you damn near need therapy. Can't believe the initial hook my friend got me with was that Brad drops a baby.
Brad dropping Buddy is a perfect microcosm of their relationship. He's trying, man. He's trying so hard. But right there from the beginning, him trying to do the right thing, and failing, hurts her. And it's so fucking tragic, man.
@@The5lacker playing it the first time, that somehow, with the timing, and the tension, had me in stitches. Second time... It just hurt. For exactly the reason you described.
That part about buddy realizing brad had the best intentions hit really really close to home. I've only come to see the parallel with my own relationship with my father through this video. Awesome art btw
The creator of this game mentioned in an interview that the original Lisa game was inspired by his ex-girlfriend, she was abused by her father and she never got over it. He hated her father because of it, and he said it affected their relationship pretty badly and they didn't stay together. Knowing that, I view Brad as an analog for the creator and Buddy is his second chance to try to fix and protect her, but as we see with the end of the game, Buddy never wanted any of that. Maybe that's what happened in his relationship. It's a reflection on what his ex-girlfriend needed and how he might have failed her. Also, that part I mentioned about hating her Father? Remember what happens to Marty in the game? I might be be projecting too much of what I *think* the creator was thinking when he made this game but I think it makes it that much more personal and relatable, and thereby a more profound experience when playing the game.
Huh, never been this early before. In that case, can I just say your editing/animation/presentation is so great and unique, always what's been keeping me coming back to these videos!
Spoilers My favourite choice in this game has to be when u enter the 3rd Crossroad after u are given the choice between sacrificing your ENTIRE party and Buddy’s nipple. Most people would have choose to let Buddy lose a piece of herself for their favourite team combo but for those that chose to have their team executed for Buddy’s safety, you’re given another choice by Buzzo literally a few seconds later between losing what could potentially be your second arm or ALL your items. And the third choice “Ask why he’s doing this.” causes Buzzo to cut BOTH your arm off and take all your stuff. It feels like Austin giving the middle finger to the audience who play choice heavy games that allow u to sweet talk your way out, it feels wrong yet so right.
@@AdmiralChimp Well the interview I remember seeing that stated was actually taken down, so I might just be mixing up headcanon with reality. Sorry chief.
when buddy tells brad that he hurt her the most and he shed a tear, that shit had me bawling the first time i played. and seeing it again all these years later really hit me hard again. great video. wish this game had more appreciation.
I feel you misunderstand terribly what the problem with brad is. His over protectiveness isn't "robbing humankind the chance to repopulate". The world has already ended. Fuck that. Brad is denying Buddy her agency. That's the whole point.
He knows what these other individuals are capable of. While it is wrong what he does to protect her, the folks of this world would have no qualms with raping/molesting/etc her without Brad there to protect her. You can sit there and hate him all you like but he saved her from a terrible fate.\ Edit: Just like a father *fucking* should......
Exactly! The world is done…and forcing some poor kid to “repopulate” isn’t the kind of world I’d want to live in. Also even if Buddy did have children, would she be able to even keep them? Would fresh conflicts arise over control of more girls being born?
A great run down on how Brad, a broken man stays broken in a broken world who never becomes whole even at the end, stands at the top compared to "feel bad I'm sad" club. Urick my boy keep it up 💖 and if that Terry video is real you gotta let me in on that I love me longus lad!
Something I think would’ve helped cement the main argument for your video is (SPOILERS) Brad had the opportunity to be a good dad with Dusty. I don’t know if you’ve played Lisa the Joyful but Rando/Dusty still sees Brad as an exemplar father even after his neglect and lack of empathy (much like how Marty treated Brad). Rando understands where Brad was coming from during the events of the painful, however Buddy still sees Brad as the flawed person he was. The funny thing is, Buddy essentially becomes a Chloe or Alex type character in Lisa the Joyful. Her upbringing and major messiah complex cause her to become an extremely violent and uncaring individual, to the point of killing a tribe of pacifists just because they get in her way of being the strongest warlord in Olathe, and she justifies this by claiming how she doesn’t want to adhere to her role as the sole source of repopulation, and if she does have to repopulate she wants to rule while doing it. I don’t understand how these big budget games can have such flat uninteresting characters yet a 10 buck RPG maker game has some of the most engaging and interesting characterization I’ve ever seen.
Something I'd like to add (SPOILERS AAAYYY) Not only Dusty, but also Terry was unintentionally Brad's other form of redemption. It's heavily suggested that before meeting Brad, Terry was dealing with crippling loneliness and depression and that his hints were his method of coping, but once he met Brad he described it as being "the best day of his life", so Brad changed his life for the better. And yet it's very likely that Brad killed Terry for trying to stop him.
Panties Bandito well spoilers but Seeing as canonically all the party members from the painful are dead either by or before the events of the joyful and the fact that Brad has the choice to just straight up sacrifice members of his gang at certain parts of the game I think the people you recruit during the painful show how willing Brad is to literally just give up other people’s lives to save one
@@Grundleburger That seriously is dependent on the player's interpretation of Brad and how they choose to play him. Because for me personally, I tried to play Brad as morally good as possible. I never sacrificed anyone for example, or let anyone die during the Russian Roulette. There are also times where you can just do the right thing, like with Rooster you can blackmail him into joining you but I just let him have his prized hen, I let Bo reunite with his brother, and I didn't force Crisp into my party. There also times where your party members can get kidnapped and Brad can choose to pay a ransom to get them back safely. So for me personally, I kind of saw Brad as rather selfless for his party. It's Buddy that's a whole another story though.
Bruh the lackluster writing of Buddy in Joyful is so disappointing when you compare it to Painful. But apparently like, after Austin Jorgensen had made Painful (and the stretch goal to make Joyful had been reached) he was like *ehh fuck it I don't really wanna do this anymore but I have to because I said I would*, and it shows. There's been Buddy-centric fanfiction written that makes her a lot more complex and likable than she was in the game. Also about why big budget games can have such terrible characters and indie rpgs can be awesome, I think with indie games it's moreso a labor of love and because you aren't dealing with the bureaucracy of a big company and too many cooks in the kitchen and having to try to make a game that appeals to a broad audience, these indie rpgs can take bigger risks and it pays off in the long run.
Every single Urick video has stunning animated visuals, amazing commentary, and just oozes quality from every pore. This is how you make a good, nay, an incredible video.
I'm glad people are still talking about LISA The Painful hopefully many people will talk about Citizens Of Earth someday because it's a huge love letter for Earthbound and Earthbound fans both LISA and Citizens Of Earth are great games.

@@taxman676 sure i would love too, my gem was actually 2 games of which each make a half of one whole, the distraint series, distraint 1 is a psychological horror game which tells the tale about a man named Kasey price, a man that has sold his humanity for success and what it had cost him, distraint 2 is a direct continuation of distraint 1 and a somewhat of an epilogue to price's story, it's a story about finding hope in the most darkest of places, overall it's the distraint series is a story about overcoming our darkness, and with a story that doesn't fail to tug on the heartstrings, you should give em a try you can buy both for like 2.5$ on sale.
Lisa is by far the worst game I’ve played I love this game to death. Every aspect about it. But god could I never recommend this game to a friend or even a player online. This game is honestly a tribute to the horror and how absolutely disgusting human nature can be. What we do for love, redemption, and how vicious we can truly be when pushed to the edge.
It really is a meditation on the cycle of abuse, and how that toxicity can seep out and affect the entire world. Without Marty, there'd be no Lisa, with no Lisa, there'd be no Brad and Buzzo, with no Brad and Buzzo, there'd be no Rando/Dusty. The failings of one man shaped the entire world for the worse.
@@Shinigami13133 dont forget about yado. without buzzo, yado may not have ever really found a good way to spread joy, which would have changed brads life immensely as well as most of olathe
I was about to pop off for a minute, but I understand. Even though my friend recommended this game to me. I'd never recommend it to anyone that isn't super close to me personally.
I’m pogging because I’m a Lisa super fan. Lisa is literally a cult classic. As in the fans gather and worship. If there’s a Lisa video made we will know immediately.
What I love about LISA is that it very clearly shows how although Brad has a reason for his bad behavior, it never ever excuses it, he isn’t pitied, he is responsible for his own actions
spoilerino the fact that at the end brad's title become "Failure" when he saved buddy from sticky's dad, devolved into biting, crying for relief, screaming and all around throwing himself into his enemies, to finally having to fight his first adopted child that got his sawed off. And by the end becoming one of the numerous joy mutant controlled by Yado. It's so sad, Brad needs a hug.
I stopped watching this video before the spoilers section and I am so happy I did. I finished the game yesterday and it was amazing. Great video, way underrated game.
Brad isn’t an awful father, though. It’s the world that’s awful; he’s just doing the best he can. There can be no idyllic childhood in Olathe...He merely taught Buddy the law of the wasteland whilst trying to protect her. I think he’s a good father, but Buddy is too headstrong for her own good. That’s why I like Lisa the Joyful. It’s Buddy realizing that Brad did the best he could with the cards he was dealt. Buddy is the last female human on earth. I see a lot of Jesus parallels with her, complete with rebelling against god, and the responsibility of saving humanity. She simply wasn’t destined for an idyllic childhood. Not saying Brad, like god, is a good person. Like Urick said, he’s bloodthirsty, and willing to end the life of anything that gets in his way. Fuck, this is a good story. Fun game, too.
Brad is overprotective, if he just let buddy be raised by rando instead of him Buddy might have been able to have a normal life. But instead of caring about the world he only cared about doing what he wanted: to atone. Now Brad does good and when you do the Joyless run he makes it a point he's trying to improve himself for buddy. But in the end he takes it too an extreme that makes him a monster, killing the closest people to him. He strikes buddy in rage when buddy tried to protect Marty. He repeated the cycle of his father by giving into anger at the moment. But we understand why because Marty is legitimately a worse person then brad. He sexually and physically abused his only children. Brad is just so fuckin deep I could write a 10 page essay on his depth god this game is the best.
Playing through Lisa and deciding that it's Buddy's fault, actually, for running away and making it harder for Brad to be a perfect dad has got to be one of the grossest interpretations I've ever seen, especially considering the actual game resoundingly rejects it. Brad isn't a good father. It's not his fault he isn't a good father, but that doesn't make him a good father. His trauma has poisoned him, and in ways he never intended, he passed that trauma on to Buddy. And that's tragic, and maybe unavoidable in a world as traumatized as Olathe, but nevertheless Brad hurt Buddy, which is something no father should do to their child. Ever.
The5lacker I’m not blaming anything on Buddy, though. All of this was inevitable when you have someone as hellbent on redeeming himself as Brad, and someone as headstrong as Buddy. If sulfur and phosphorus come together in nature and combust, there’s no one to blame. It was only the natural consequences of the world acting out its role. Olathe is a character by itself. It’s a cruel one. It’s a character that makes horrible demands of the people that live in it. This is why I think Buddy’s character turn in Joyful is nothing short of genius. It’s her taking out her rage and trauma on everything that stands in her way. You could say that Brad was the catalyst, sure, but a more apt catalyst than Olathe you will never find. In a perfect world, a father would never hurt their child. But parents hurt their own children in ways no one can even see. You can damage a child with kindness. You can damage a child with discipline. You can damage a child with education. Children often damage themselves. It is impossible to come out of childhood unscathed, because people are born from fire and tribulation. Now take the average human existence, and drop it in Olathe? I don’t think I need to go any further. There’s no perfect parent, and Brad certainly isn’t a perfect parent. But he tried. And he went the extra mile. And he loved Buddy. To me, that is more or less the same as being a “good” dad. What an absolutely phenomenal game that allows us to have this sort of discussion, huh?
For all those who haven't played Lisa, please for the love of god play it. It's far from a masterpiece, but its ability to tell its story combined with it's awesome writing really carry the experience. Hell, look into the whole series, Lisa the Pointless' first chapter and Lisa the Hopeful are all equally, if not more impressive than the first game.
I couldn't bring myself to play Lisa. I was also broke. Lisa the Hopeful was free so I played it and was pretty sold. I still can't bring myself to play the original Lisa games because Hopeful hurt so, so much. I know Lisa: The Painful would gut me.
@@metitfour131 but isn’t that what makes it great? If you want, try Pointless, it doesn’t have a very sad ending, although be warned it’s very difficult
I'm siding with Brad on this. Buddy is just a kid. If she was older my opinion would differ. Of course, Brad was a poor father, he should've educated her about the outside world better, not just keep her in the house like that. In the end you have a kid who of course runs away that may very well end up in the hands of a bunch of perverted sickos. Sometimes you just have to tell your kid "no" when they want to do something that you know full well is stupid even if they hate you for it.
I believe the core to Brad's character is: He did a lot wrong, but none of it intentional. The best thing he could have done, was to give Buddy to Rando. But how could he have possibly known Rando was trustworthy, or powerful enough to protect her? He doted on her, and protected her, and it led to her hating his controlling nature, and by the sequel, turning her into a psychopath with a serious messiah complex. He tried to make her smile, by throwing her into the air... And he dropped her. Brad is a complete fuck-up. But... It's not really his fault.
Honestly, one of my favorite parts of this game is how it characterizes Clint Moss through his battle moves. He's got more HP than the rest of the Army and instead of getting scared of Brad, he gets *angry*. He's likely to be the very last enemy you kill before the final boss, and his determination to protect his master shines through even if he only has 2 dialogue lines in the entire game.
This is so similar to TLOU in general concept, and yet, stomps it flat. In TLOU, Joel doesn't sacrifice anything to keep wossname alive. He doesn't change. He just stays a sad dad. By contrast, Brad is constantly challenged with the "easy way out" (joy) and given trolley problems. By the end, he is guaranteed to have agonized over, and likely suffered from, sacrifices, in pursuit of doing The Right Thing. And the finale hits so much harder for that.
You should cover Lisa the Joyful. This really helps show the rebounded consequences of brads actions and how that game not only creates an unlikeable character, but a character that you can’t help but hate.
Lisa's one of my all time favorite games, and has been a huge inspiration to me as an example of a fantastic game, story, series, pretty much everything excels, and it's hard to find many flaws in any of it. I still remember the first time I played it, I flinched when Marty threw the bottle, and from there it goes from heartbreak to hilarious to fucked up in less than 5 minutes, without missing a beat or feeling unnatural. I'd say it's one of the best games of all time, and I'm being 100% genuine.
I actually first recognized Buddy from an animation I found of her fighting Chara from Undertale. Hell, I have listened to a track from this game on a Lumpy Touch video.
“People like this exist in real life” is such a terrible defense because why would someone want to be invested in a piece of media if the main characters remind them of awful people and these characters are treated like heroes?
Piss Harrison Ok but hear me out, what if you had your main character do everything you just listed, but still not be a completely unlikable dick? Oh right, you get good characters like Brad, the topic of this video.
@@bleckofbleh2295 people say the same things about like, all the characters in neon genesis evangelion, but the show still has some of the best character writing I've ever seen
@@bleckofbleh2295 it's also bojack horseman basically. why do people find that show compelling? lots of examples of bad people doing bad things in media where what makes the work compelling isn't some tangible aspect of their likability, even if it helps to have a likeable protagonist. it's just not always the case.
@@shacka95 i haven't watched Bojack myself but from what little i heard about it, i think something besides likability for a "bad" character to be good is also "reasoning", as well as other things. Someone can be a total dick but watching someone bad feel guilt or having some moments of calmness mixed in makes a character feel a little more real, even if the intention isn't for you to like that character at all. Which is something YIIK misses on as well as Stranger things (though YIIK does this worse in my opinion). Giving a character a chance to react to different things in different ways helps them feel more real. Even abusers in real live aren't mean 100% of the time and can be nice to people to get things in their favor. BoJack at points openly shows sadness, happiness, and other emotions besides hurting people that's believable and feels lively where Alex will say mean things that feel so out of place that they feel unrealistic. You can write vial characters but there's a fine line between "this character is interesting and i want to know more" and "this is getting painful to care about this character because i hate them so much and couldn't care less about this story anymore". Even though Alex from YIIK and Bojack both do some pretty bad things, the writing is so different that you get different reactions to these characters. Both can remind you of real people but that shouldn't be the "Only" thing pulling a character like that to be good writing. It can also go the other way too. Having characters that are overly nice to the point of being obnoxious or too talkative can make a player uninterested in them as well. People like that exist in real life, but if you're making a game where you need to deal with that character for hours a good writer needs to keep that in mind. Or any kind of extreme characteristic honestly. using a variety of emotions no matter what "type" of character you are writing can help you feel more attached to them and help them feel a little more real. though of course what characters you like is pretty subjective, but since so many people dislike Alex there's a large chance something is wrong with the writing or his character.
They also don't really exist. This guy is a dick all the time, therefore he is realistic, is a pretty bad argument, since nobody is a dick all the time. Even assholes have more to them than just being assholes.
In my playthrough of Lisa I made sure to save terry at every point. From the first time his life was threatened to the first time he was captured. Unfortunately the second time he was captured on area 3. I couldn't save him. I did everything right outside of savescumming. I even tried to stay off joy for most of the run. That little story my run ended up telling helped make my run feel that much more impactful.
I think a game that does the "awful person good character" thing well is I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, evil AI wipes out life on Earth but keeps the few he believes represent the worst of humanity alive to torture for the rest of eternity
They are not "the worst of humanity", they simply are randomly selected humans that AM wants to torture to release it's hatred for humanity in general. AM couldn't give a shit about morality.
@@kasym when the people you "randomly select" are [spoilers] a wife abuser, a con man, a murder cannibal, and an actual nazi, excuse more for assuming their may be a pattern in your selection, granted, the rape victim is a little out of place
@@devilord3271 It’s been a while since I’ve seen anything related to the game, but my read on it is that he selected those people because they represented the worst of humanity according to AM, a criteria that might not line up necessarily with human morality, but instead with what he sees as pathetic or disgusting about humanity. And I think he chose Ellen because she’s a very prideful person, she’s easy to torture because of her trauma, and also because she was a genius engineer and implied to be indirectly responsible for his creation, which he sees as a cursed existence.

I'm happy to still see this game get some recognition. I played this when it first came out years ago, and I was absolutely awestruck by it. The story in this game was on a level I hadn't felt since the first time I played Xenogears. Genuine goosebumps at some point. The dialogue was some of the best flowing and natural sounding ever, even to this date. Quick spoiler alert too for those who haven't played this:..... The final boss was also a kid that Brad, as a younger karate instructor, took on out of pity years before, adding even further to just how well woven this story was. Even it's sequel, Lisa The Joyful, while not quite the narrative powerhouse of The Painful, is still a passable sequel that may not do Buddy the full justice she deserved, but I chalk it up to being better than nothing, and doesn't grossly insult or demean the tale.
Nice moves.
Reminds me kinda of Manlybadasshero and Nern haha. He disliked the guy and put him on the russian roulette but he just wouldn't die
When I was also playing russian roulette I noticed that at the end of every game you can just go outside and save, so everytime I won I just went outside, saved the game so whenever a member of my party ends up dead I just load my save lol
I'ts not that funny knowing that but it really helped someone as unlucky as me
I hadn't played a game where there was permandeath for my characters so the Russian roulette game got me shooked! Iirc Terry has like some high luck stat or something that can make him a good pick.
I used the chicken guy because that guy was annoying and pretty likely to leave Brad at any point.
YIIK's humor: random for random
Lisa's humor: dear god this is so sad we need to laugh
The first "Joke": Brad dropping a baby. And it had me in stitches. The timing, the tension release...

Why I also rejoice at this moment is because it shows how our flaws are enforsed by trauma and bad influence. One of the main factors Brad even became an addict is the PTSD of his awful childhood. And there wasn't anyone around to support him. Don't forget that Brad was also trying to kick his addiction! Brad can go through the whole game choosing not to take joy, for Buddy's sake and to better himself. Kinda sucks that urick didn't mention that.
Panties Bandito To be fair though, that’s a choice that you as the player make, not Brad. Plus Buzzo forces you to take Joy at one point
With or without the drugs, he murdered ALOT of people for standing between him and Buddy.
yeah, he's a classic greek tragedy protagonist
I wanna add an Addendum to this: Brad's final result in the game is Also influenced by the players decisions, and even who The Player takes to the final battle.

If you take to the final battle people like Terry or Nern, or just partners who seem like "nice people" in their own way, they will be affected by a Crying Status in a fight in which they battle Brad himself, because even they thought Brad was turning into a psycopath like the people they defeated along the way. Meanwhile, if you take people who dislike Brad, or didn't care enough about who he was, these characters will not care about Brad's well being, and will just fight normally. It's just a small detail that adds to the fact you impacted even your party's thoughts of you.
My party the first time around consisted of Nern, Olan, and Terry. Suffice to say I was bawling my eyes out almost the whole way through
ThatGuyYouKnow Yeah having the original 3 fight you must be the saddest thing ever
The Stranger The worst part is that none of them even did any real damage, it was depressing as fuck
@Cheese Legs Your name is appreciated, Cheese Legs
Then there are the characters like Fly; "I've always hated you...Brad." Or Rage; "I've wanted her since the beginning. What did you think was going to happen, Brad?" Like I kept Fly around because of how incredibly powerful he is but God, what a douche.
Brad is literally the embodiment of "the road to hell is paved by good intentions"
I mean, let's see:
You have a little kid who's a girl.
Ironically, that is the decision that both makes her an insensitive monster AND a powerful warrior by the end.
the bad part is he's neglectful due to his drug addiction.
The best part about it is on steam the only description it get's is

The most compelling about Brad is that his flaws are understandable due to his experience in life. And it's ironic how in the end he basically another side of coin of the man he hates.
it's also ironic that Brad is at his worst just as we see his father at his best

Mark Regan bro, have you even watched the show? You can’t say that when you haven’t even watched it smh.
Right???? It's like what else could he have done? You know damn well you'd do the same if you were in his shoes
@@franciscoreyes7653 was talking about rando
@Piss Harrison
I’d argue that maybe leaving Buddy with Rando wouldn’t have ended too badly at that point, but otherwise I completely agree.

Personally I'd argue that all humans entirely selfish, just in different ways.
People donate to charity to feel good about themselves.
People help others because they, personally, don't want someone they care about to suffer.
I really don't think it's fair to say it's immoral to want to improve on your past mistakes, or to want to feel good for succeeding in helping someone.
@@sarafontanini7051
I’d argue that it was a need for redemption AND trying to care for a child. Brad’s reasoning makes sense when you consider that a female child is going to go through hell in a world such his, but yes he is a very broken man. A bit selfish, but that’s not his entire reasoning, and I think it’s unfair to try and boil it down to just that.

New ending, bitches
What are the 3 endings?
"Brads selfish parent attitude of 'ill let the world burn to save my child'"
"Tis better to let 10 guilty walk free then let one innocent suffer"

Brad's a very tragic story. By the end he became an awful, terrible man, even worse insome aspects than his father, but there was still SOME good in him even if most of it was ruined by Joy.
For a character who barely says much, he is indeed an interesting, compelling character, one who does terrible things we cannot condone but one with a life so awful and a desire selfish yet noble we can't help but feel for him regardless.

Austin has actually said that out of all the characters in the game, the one that is most based on him is Buzzo
Huh, never been this early before. In that case, can I just say your editing/animation/presentation is so great and unique, always what's been keeping me coming back to these videos!

My favourite choice in this game has to be when u enter the 3rd Crossroad after u are given the choice between sacrificing your ENTIRE party and Buddy’s nipple.
"Favorite team combo" I'm not sacrificing Buddy's nipple for my "fav team combo" dude, I'm doing it so 3 people don't die FOR NO REASON lol.
unfun fact: austin's confirmed that the canon choice is Brad letting his party die to stop Buddy from getting hurt

rando did nothing wrong
Don't forget Sticky, he was a genuinely good person. Buddy confirmed in Joyful that he didn't do anything weird.
In the end, Rando's just another casualty of a fucked up world.
Rando is the best character
when buddy tells brad that he hurt her the most and he shed a tear, that shit had me bawling the first time i played. and seeing it again all these years later really hit me hard again. great video. wish this game had more appreciation.
I feel you misunderstand terribly what the problem with brad is. His over protectiveness isn't "robbing humankind the chance to repopulate". The world has already ended. Fuck that. Brad is denying Buddy her agency. That's the whole point.
A year late to this, but there´s also the hundreds of people he mowed down to get to her, many of whom didn´t deserve to die.
He knows what these other individuals are capable of. While it is wrong what he does to protect her, the folks of this world would have no qualms with raping/molesting/etc her without Brad there to protect her. You can sit there and hate him all you like but he saved her from a terrible fate.\
Edit: Just like a father *fucking* should......
Exactly! The world is done…and forcing some poor kid to “repopulate” isn’t the kind of world I’d want to live in. Also even if Buddy did have children, would she be able to even keep them? Would fresh conflicts arise over control of more girls being born?
A world with only one women is definently completely doomed with 0 chance of surviving.
@@djangogames3720 yeah.. the choice is "torture a kid for no reason, or don't do that". I think Brad went with "don't do that"
A great run down on how Brad, a broken man stays broken in a broken world who never becomes whole even at the end, stands at the top compared to "feel bad I'm sad" club. Urick my boy keep it up 💖 and if that Terry video is real you gotta let me in on that I love me longus lad!
Something I think would’ve helped cement the main argument for your video is (SPOILERS)
Brad had the opportunity to be a good dad with Dusty.
Something I'd like to add (SPOILERS AAAYYY)
Not only Dusty, but also Terry was unintentionally Brad's other form of redemption.
Panties Bandito well spoilers but
Seeing as canonically all the party members from the painful are dead either by or before the events of the joyful and the fact that Brad has the choice to just straight up sacrifice members of his gang at certain parts of the game I think the people you recruit during the painful show how willing Brad is to literally just give up other people’s lives to save one

This game is honestly a tribute to the horror and how absolutely disgusting human nature can be. What we do for love, redemption, and how vicious we can truly be when pushed to the edge.
It really is a meditation on the cycle of abuse, and how that toxicity can seep out and affect the entire world. I stopped watching this video before the spoilers section and I am so happy I did. I finished the game yesterday and it was amazing. Great video, way underrated game.
YEES LISA
Makes me so happy to see people are talking about this game!!
Brad tried to do the right thing, and did all the wrong things. I’m a sucker for any “dad wants to be a good dad” story.
Ever.
The5lacker
I’m not blaming anything on Buddy, though.
What an absolutely phenomenal game that allows us to have this sort of discussion, huh?
casual reminder that the story happens because Brad left buddy at home so he could go out into the wasteland and get high.

The trilogy is finally complete
Its not a trilogy, my pal.

Earthbound is about growing up. LISA is about growing old...

Bruh the amount of effort you put in video's is mind boggling
Excellent video, you got yourself a subscriber!
There are songs, scenes, and moments that, no matter how many times I experience them, they have the exact same effect on me time and time and time again.
Buddy hugging Brad is one of them.
“Sympathy from tragedy doesn’t equal complexity” you summed it up so well
