✈ One of the Strangest Sounding Aircraft? Piaggio P180 Avanti Take off Southend

  • Hello and welcome to SOUTHEND AVIATION!
The Paggio P180 Avanti is up there as one of the strangest modern day civilian aircraft today, both in its looks and sounds. The P180 is famous for having "pusher props" or backwards facing props. The engines themselves are similar to that of a King air or PC12, the highly successful PW PT6 but the prop itself is at the rear of the engine. This can be a little confusing because if you know the PT6 engine, you'll know they are reverse flow engines (the air intake starts at the back) this is why you'll notice on the Kingair the exhaust are towards the front. Essentially the engine on a Piaggio no long become reverse flow, the engine itself is turned around so the compressor sits at the front etc etc.
Another fairly unique feature on the P180 is they do not have a critical engine, meaning the props counter rotate (one turns clockwise, the other anti-clockwise). So if turning the engines around wasn't enough hard work, you could say the P180 has 2 different engines (the compressors and turbines would counter rotate too)
The P180 is one of the fastest civilian turboprops in operation, reaching cruise speeds similar to that of a light business jet. The pusher props allows for noise levels in the cabin to be relatively quiet. On the exterior it's a different story, the P180 is easily one of the loudest and most recognisable sounding turbo props out there. The loud noise from pusher props comes from the hot exhaust air interacting with the propeller blades adding an extra 9 decibels.
Some say it sounds annoying, some say it looks strange or ugly. But you got to admit that it is one pretty advanced aircraft with engines/props like those! Hope everyone enjoys!

I really don’t know what was strange about the sound it made. It’s a awesome airplane! Jet speeds for half of the fuel burn. It’s more environmentally friendly.this plane is just awesome!

Loud and relatively high pitch. One flys in my area. It's alway obvious when it goes over.

You can clearly hear these things in the cruise above you like the A400M's and AN12's... Droning along.

Just had one of these fly over me coming into Pensacola from Panama City sounds weird but cool

They are very noisy when 30,000ft high or higher, just like A400Ms, C-130H/J/Etc, Pilatus PC-12, Socata TBM, Beechcraft King Air 200/300/350 and more!!

Can’t forget the mu-2. Had one fly over me at 26,000 feet according to flightaware and the sound waves from those props made my chest and ears hurt for a split second a few seconds after it past over. Turboprop acoustics are the best

So much car traffic, really can't get true sound!
Glad i know for sure it does have VERY distinct sound on approach and after departure, unique and all its own!

At the part where the engine kicks in, it sounds like a tornado siren.

It’s certainly a very unique aircraft I wonder if they ever considered a jet powered variant🤔

Turboprops are very fuel efficient compared to their power output.

at the beginning Gates Learjet was involved in research and development work, but because they wanted an efficiant aircraft, turbines where no option

That would probably be more expensive to operate. Turboprops are efficient for the type of routes this plane would be on.

Only louder planes I've had fly above my house were:
    - C17
    - F-18
    - F22
    - Rafale
    - AlphaJet
That plane is so damn loud I FUCKING HATE IT AAAAAAA
