My personal motto is "Never knowingly underdressed" and I always dress for myself. I don't dress with the intention of standing out, but I'm often more dressed up than those around me, and I'm OK with that. My style words are relaxed, elevated, self-possessed. My signature items are bags and shoes.
I am a romantic body type, determined by John Kitchener. I spent my entire professional career trying to straighten out my curves so I could fit into the business community and be taken seriously. My style is now still classic and tailored but with some romantic pieces included to honor my body type. For instance, I have a lot of sweetheart necklines that I wear under both blazers and Moto jackets. I choose tactile fabrics such as velvet at every opportunity. My waist is always defined. I wear a lot more dresses. My signature color is water color from pale green/blue to deep aegean blue. My only regret is that I did not have this information years ago. It would have saved a lot of money and frustration! Thanks for all you do to help women find their way in the fashion world.
I wear modern classics and I don't like to attract attention but I have my own style with subtle original details and I like it when other women do a double take. I don't dress for men although last week a very well dressed, smart-suited African man smiled at me and said, "great outfit!" I was wearing my khaki velvet trouser suit from last season Mango. I'm 58 and he was in his 20s so I took it as a great compliment. I suffered horribly from overweight and acne most of my life until I lost the weight 4 years ago and my skin cleared after a course of antibiotics. So most of my like I looked terrible and I only started dressing up and looking good from my mid-50s. I have been treating myself to quite a few items of clothing, footwear, bags and accessories, making up for lost time. I finally feel like myself and your YT videos have really helped me improve my style and looking better than I ever have so thank you!
Thank you, Nada, this whole video is so useful and applicable! I was already doing some of it intuitively and you gave me such an insight and fuller picture, much appreciated! Natali
Feeling guilt and shame are useless emotions that we often suffer from as women, when there's absolutely nothing to feel ashamed or guilty about. Someone once said to me, "Hold your head up high" and I have done ever since!
I am 70% classic, 30% creative. I love color, embroidery and fringe. Don’t mind being in big earrings, embroidered jeans and cashmere, or dresses when friends are in blue jeans and sweatshirts. They are just used to me being me. Red is my signature color and my crazy, curly hair is my signature. Love your ideas and videos. You have helped define my style!
Good Morning Nada, I have always dressed for myself and enjoy getting ready for my day. For my personal style, I'm more of a classic dresser, but I'm always comfortable being the best dressed person in the room. I am a confident women who loves styling my outfits. I have found for myself that over accessorizing an outfit can look like I'm trying to hard, so I tend to choose one "hero piece" to take center stage in my outfit and that really works well and I feel like my look is well balanced. I do have many 'hero pieces' to choose from whether it's a statement bracelet, earrings, blazer or a killer pair of shoes, so creating a fabulous outfit is pretty easy for me. Thanks for all you do to help us stay fashionable.
I've watched quite a lot of these types of videos but yours is one of the best I've watched. I especially love your idea of only wearing what you truly love. I'm going to pick an outfit that I love every day for a week and see what I end up with. Those will be the "front and center" items in my wardrobe. 30% Creative/70% Classic and not afraid to stand out. 🌹🌹🌹
I’m about 80% classic, 20% creative. I like to blend in, but I don’t mind if I’m the best dressed in the room. I used to wear a lot of purple, but as my hair has greyed, I’ve changed to blue. I just don’t know what my signature pieces are yet, but I’m working on it. 😄
My late mother always insisted that we dressed appropriately for the occasion so I have done that my whole life. I have been to several funerals lately and I have been shocked by the casual attire of attendees as some looked like they were either just getting out of bed or changing the oil in their car. I guess I am classic, not wanting to stand out but dressed in good quality tailored attire that focuses on my best attributes. The problem is that I am a busty size 22 so finding items is hard. My favourite outfit is a pair of dark jeans, a paisley silk blouse and a plum leather collarless blazer. Since I retired, my uniform has become jeans (or denim shorts depending upon the season), a t-shirt or pullover sweater and a jacket for outerwear. I will save this video for reference as you hit some chords with me. Thank you so much!
I am 50 percent bohemian and fifty percent classic. 5 ft tall, 5.5 shoes, hourglass, short torso, long legs... the things I learn from you!! My words are feminine, modern .classy,
Another wonderfully helpful video. I just love the idea of making a list of what you love and don't love! I'm half classic and half creative. I put a lot of thought into my outfits and don't mind standing out and being the best dressed person where ever I go. That is just who I am. My waist is tiny so my outfits always showcase this with a belt or dress / pants/ skirt cut and to balance out a slighly bigger bottom half. I love tops with details in the sleeves as I'm rather small on top. I enjoy pops of colour like wearing red modern Mary Jane's with a wide leg jean and a red and animal print handbag. My jewellery and top is then quieter using your point system. It is really fun to dress every day and you are so right; it sets the tone for the rest of your day. Your hard work is turning the 50 pluses across the world into very stylish women! Thanks!
It’s excellent superb and apex advice to assign words to pieces we DONT favor in the closet. My Number One culprit? Warm colors. I am definitively a Cool complexion person but I only learned that recently; now I am on a mission to purge, ruthlessly, all my mistake purchases.
This video is the BEST SO FAR! Thank you Nada! It gives lots of information! It ALSO SETS out fine points that are like precious jewels being strung on a beautiful necklace.
Great tips, thank you. This has helped me articulate the nature of my personal style which, after many years of expensive hits and misses, I think I've nailed. I think we have a somewhat similar aesthetic. For example, sporty, oversized, graphic print, menswear, baseball caps... no way. Creative in a classic way though. I don't blend in much in most places because I always dress more mindfully than most, complete with my signature headbands, belts, berets (in winter) and sunglasses. Smart -- but feminine and slightly edgy -- casual is me. So yes, a blazer but a fitted funky Smythe blazer. Lots of leather jackets (Mackage, Danier). Denim: jeans, jackets and dresses. Tall boots in colder weather and platform shoes and sneakers in summer. Strong or detailed shoulders to give me more of an hourglass. No high necklines. Lace, lace, lace, silk, merino wool, good cotton poplin and knits... (Nation Ltd. , Ba&sh, Sezane. I'm a huge believer in buying quality because it lasts. I have chocolate brown leather pants from the 80s. A navy alpaca wrap coat from the 80s. A denim wrap coat from the 2000s. A black leather trench from 2002. Many blazers. More denim. I don't follow trends so much as my own style and this year, with its lady jackets, boring cardis, and still! oversized, haven't meshed except that I have snagged a few pieces in army green, bordeaux, chocolate brown, where I find them and as long as they fit my style, shape and vibe. (I'm a bright spring so wishy-washy neutrals drain me.) Keep up this great work. Much appreciated.
This was really good. I live in a ski town, so my "city girl" look (as my husband calls it) is pretty out of place. I felt so obvious our first few years here and tried to blend in with the active wear crowd. I do ski hard, and trail run et al, but I don't want to dress like that all the time. It's not me. Last few years of being empty nesters, and able to spend some money on myself Banana Republic has become my go to. Easy, elegant, sometimes flowy, often tailored. It's been a great discovery for me.
I dress for myself and always stay true to my style. My style is really classic, and I like to blend in, though slightly skewed to the overdressed side. Colours: Blue and grey, with some salmon. My signature items are bags, earrings and sometimes a statement necklace.
I’m 70% classic and 30% creative. I’m an hourglass figure. I’m not afraid to overdress a bit because it’s very casual where I live, but that doesn’t reflect who I am. Today, I had a doctor appointment and my doctor (a younger woman), complimented me on style and the fact that I dressed nicely for my appointment. She said that most patients come in wearing leggings and a T-shirt. She complimented me a couple of times and compliments from other women are the best!
I saw an older woman at the UPS office this week that had on the most awesome destructed barrel jeans and she completely pulled it off ; very confident too. Brands🎉❤
Awww, my friends call all of my sunglasses my 'Jackie Os.' I've been moving away from my perpetual LBD days lately, though, and heading more toward upscale New England coastal. Nautical adjacent, if you will. It was impossible to be underdressed in a little black dress, which I appreciated, because I had a lot of surprise social engagements. Wearing a black dress at all times meant I could go anywhere at the drop of a hat. Now that I go out a lot less, I want to look like those older alums I would always see walking around my college campus, looking unbothered and casually fancy.
My style is "classic." I like to dress for the occasion. And, I don't mind dressing up at all, in fact, I feel very comfortable dressed up and in heels.
I would say 70/30 classic-creative, 60/40 blend-in-er-stand-out-er. I like to use the three-word method (although I came up with the three words on my own and didn’t use anyone’s formula). My words are tailored, feminine, and playful. I wear mostly tailored shapes, but there are many feminine and playful colors and details. I also like to wear them in playful ways.
Great advice and I never thought about picking a couple stores - I def have a creative personal style but sometimes do wonder if what I mix up works well. I’m 20% classic and I’m a stander outer
This was very helpful. I think if you're a creative dresser, you end up unintentionally standing out & getting attention ( not always positive attention) & you just kind of get used to it? Ive always gotten attention for how I looked/ dressed when it really was just me wearing what I liked or what was comfortable or affordable for me. I never stood in front of my closet & consciously thought "what can I wear to get attention today." Often I was just throwing togetner stuff I had & that I liked how it looked. And i would get compliments or snide comments depending on where I was. Don't know what it is about me that made people feel they could just give me their opinion unasked for but I learned to ignore it. When I didn't want to look approachable I wore a lot of black lol. I am more of a monochromatic/tonal dresser right down to the shoes & I don't like anything too fussy that needs constant readjustment or tucking or is restrictive. I have learned that I prefer a dress over a skirt & blouse -its all 1 thing & i can style it up or down easily. I like separates that give me the look of all 1 thing but I don't necessarily want a matching set. I like the look of a jumpsuit since it visually works like a maxi dress without the inconvenience of using the restroom 😅 Relaxed tailoring resonates with me. I can feel comfortable dressed up or down if the outfit has the right balance of comfort, color & silhouette. Shoes must be low heeled whether they're casual or dressy. I used to describe my style as Vintage- Boho- Witch 😊
You look Stunning (!) in That black pantsuit in the split screen with the denim dress….AND, can that denim dress be worn open over a slightly shorter satiny slipdress on you? Just thinking…..
"I feel fabulous, thank you for asking." But please don't be cold or you will not look comfortable and confident, also you don't want to catch a chill!
I am a dress or skirt person. My answer to those who ask questions that are none of their business is "I am uncomfortable in pants." In my case it is mostly a physical discomfort but also a style discomfort. Do those of us who wear skirts and dresses ask people why they are wearing jeans to a funeral? I doubt it.
I just felt like it🥰 I love retro looks 🥰 Dresses are so much cooler on these hot days🥰 I dress like this all the time🥰 Pants never seem to fit me right, but dresses do🥰 Dresses are so much easier, one and done! 🥰
What do you do when your husband doesn’t like the style you love.I make a lot of mistakes buying clothes I think he’ll like on me.I also buy clothes I love , to wear when I’m not with him.Such as, if I meet friends for lunch.I like very baggy clothes and I am 71 years old. I know his choices for me look better. However,I love the other clothes. It’s a real dilemma, and expensive.
Only accept his comments if they're constructive and kind, and not intended to put you down. Maybe start criticising him and ask him how he likes it. You're 71 and not a child, he should be supportive and kind, that's his job. Also, dress for yourself, not for him, since he doesn't seem to appreciate it anyway.

Feeling guilt and shame are useless emotions that we often suffer from as women, when there's absolutely nothing to feel ashamed or guilty about. Someone once said to me, "Hold your head up high" and I have done ever since!

There's no need to control it! Lean into it :) If you love blue, blue is so you. :)
Me too. Love all shades of 💙. I wear lots of different colors, but have really been in a blue mode as of late.
