Kay, as usual, you are an inspiration. I wanted to share something with you about myself. I am 75 and have always loved fashion. I consider my style to be feminine, classic, and now at my age, relaxed. I go in my closet and put together my outfits, including jewelry, and prepare everything for the month ahead and my activities. Sometimes I have to change a little because I live in Florida and the weather can change on a dime. But I have plenty of time to work on my closet and I really enjoy putting things together. I also love your videos for giving me new ideas and keeping me current. Thank you for all you do. ❤
I am not creative with clothing at all in the morning, I just want to have a cup of tea, some breakfast, get ready and go. To combat this problem on Sunday I check the weather for the week, I decide what color to do my nails and what color bag I am going to carry that week. Then I assemble 5-6 outfits, I put the jewelry and accessories in a bag and hang it with each outfit. This way I can pick from an assortment of outfits and pop something on easily. This way I only have to change my bag once a week, and I don’t have to make a lot of decisions in the morning. I wish I thought of this years ago.
Kay, you explained this difficult topic so well! The structure and pace of the video is exceptional. The visuals are superb and add to the effectiveness of your message. This video is one that will watch over and over again. Bravo!🎉 And, thank you!!
I love this video!!! I am finally understanding my style and it is so much easier and more fun to shop and I am not spending money on items that do not fit my style! I am 85 and have always loved clothes and always enjoyed looking stylish but at this age body has changed and this video and your others ones have been wonderful during these later years to help me continue to be stylish which also helps you not to become invisible! At the first of the year my daughter, granddaughter and I are going to view this video together, this will be fun! Thanks again…….Carole❤️
This presentation was so well-done. I am ready to go through my closet again and take out the items I don't feel fabulous in. I know exactly what you mean when you walk out that door and feel comfortable and confident in what you are wearing. Thanks, Kay.
Years ago a friend I worked with told me she admired my style. I had honestly never thought about”my style” before. I asked what she meant. She said I always looked classy and casual. The long and the short of it is, that was the start of more conscious shopping and dressing. I have added a bit of boho to my classic, casual style and really enjoy dressing and shopping now. I have always appreciated your videos and advice and you have helped me refine my look and wardrobe. Thank you.
Kay, This video really resonated with me. There's a woman at my church who has "nailed" her personal style (boho) and she never deviates from it. So, I can recognize personal style BUT I'm never sure how to define or express my own personal style (casual classic, I think?). This was really very helpful and has given me a lot to think about. Thanks so much again!
I'm so glad you found this helpful! But don’t use that word casual to define your style. Come up with something else that says what you mean. Otherwise you’ll run into problems when you’re trying to create the perfect outfit for a special occasion.
Ha, there's a woman in my church as well whose style has been boho for as long as I've known her (35-ish) years. She never deviates and totally suits her personality.
Wow, this was outstanding! I do appreciate how much work it was to get all this wisdom together. I have followed along with you for ages now. I am very grateful. Being able to look nice has made me free to be more present with others. Bless you.
Something that has seen me through decades of life, career changes, and a change in country, has been accessories that are like me. Sometimes they’re antique, or one of a kind art, or just an unusual piece of current jewelry. My basic clothing tends to be high quality classics, but colors, how I use them, and my collected accessories take them into my territory. I have clothing from the Seventies on, because I take good care of my things and don’t buy trends and extremes, but only last week I wore trousers of deep hot pink Italian wool gabardine in a classic straight leg, with an oversized fluffy angora sweater I picked up off a street vendor in palest orangey Rachel, what we used to misname “flesh”. Big hot pink earrings and a true pink snakeskin belt, and done. Trousers from 1982, sweater two weeks ago, belt 1978, earrings ages ago, I can’t even remember. Nothing ever looked as good with those trousers as that silly, slightly orange sweater. I take a lot of joy in dressing. A piece may be forty years old or found last month, it only has to be totally me.
I feel like I have a well-defined personal style that makes me feel my best and a beautiful wardrobe that reflects it. But, I always enjoy your videos and learn new things, thank you, Kay. My three style angles are classic, tailored and feminine. I like more structured styles, like blazers, and bring in the femininity with soft fabrics and colors. I wear dresses or skirt outfits nearly every day, for their superior comfort, so that makes my style more inherently feminine already. The only time I was unhappy with my style or wardrobe was when I adopted the locally-popular Boho style for a few years. It just never felt like me, I was trying to conform to what others were wearing rather than sticking to my otherwise lifelong style guidelines. I’m still resisting the constant local pressure to wear very casual clothes, like ratty jeans and sweats, everyday - again, it’s just not me! I think it’s fine for otgers
I finally defined, (found) my style. It was right in front of me for a long time, but I just couldn't figure out the 3 words. Now I have - Classic, French and Sporty. The French and classic kind of go together. To confirm my three words I went to Pinterest and looked up "sporty chic" and French girl style, and lo and behold I already most -if not all - of the clothes already in my closet. I just couldn't put the words to my style. My style icon is Grace Kelly. Her classic American girl, yet simple aesthetic is what I am going for. Finally at 59, I have figured it out. Now I also know why, that when I wear things that are more fussy, I don't feel good. Give me a classic French girl wearing white sneakers and I feel like myself. Thanks Kay
It helps me to think of what I don’t want my style to be - sloppy, revealing, girly, boring…opposites are pulled together, classic, feminine, creative. Thank you!
This is such an informative video to wrap-up your year long series. I have used so many of your tips throughout the year to help me find and define my style. The style angle was a good place for me to start. It got my creative juices flowing while allowing myself to discover hidden facets of myself.
Hi Kay, what a concise explanation and clear summary on this topic. As I followed this blog series (which I love) my preferences in fashions, colors, combinations, fit and feel have evolved but I do think my style angles have both helped and held true; at least for now. The soul searching you explained and encouraged early on, were definitely worth the effort. I plan to do a full review of the series again next year. Thank you for such a valuable piece of work.
I live in a country with four distinct seasons. I guess I'll try that with my closet for each season and see if there is a common thread to discover my style.
Hello Kay, I am still working on defining my style and this video has been incredibly helpful. Thank you for all the great information and encouragement. You are a blessing! I hope you and yours have a very Merry CHRISTmas!
There was quite a lot of information packed into this video. It's very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to make it. It gives me food for thought on being intentional with my style instead of just being dressed without much thought.
Loved the video! It was inspiring because I just realized I love different color combinations in the outfits I would wear. Up to this point, I never realized how much I love color combinations that either have a sharp contrast or a warm flow to them. Thank you for taking the time and effort to put this information together. ❤
I need help. Lol. I really needed this video. I'm 53 and I've always dressed too old for my age.... according to my daughters and my sister. I'm conservative and I guess I'm classic. My inspiration comes from watching Murder She Wrote. I'm not joking. I love Jessica Fletcher's clothes and blazers, cardigans and coats. But how can I take that style (which I know is very 80's) and create outfits for today?? Can you possibly do a video for people like me who like fashion from decades ago?
I don't see anything wrong with the Jessica Fletcher style. I mean, these days you would wear your blouse lapels inside your collar instead of outside on top of your jacket lapels, and we don't wear shoulder pads in absolutely everything like in the 80s, but mostly her style is just as current today as it was then. I follow several stylists on youtube, one English, one French, and several American, who all pretty much use a Jessica Fletcher style.
In fact, I found an article from February about how to have the Jessica Fletcher style, with clothing examples and links to items from this last spring. And look at what Kay is wearing today; Jessica Fletcher wore a very similar outfit in one episode, but her blouse lapels were worn on the outside of her jacket instead of inside.
@@edennis8578 that's true! Her blouse lapels were worn on the outside of her jacket. Yes, that's right. I've seen something somewhere about the Jessica Fletcher "style" but I think it was on Pinterest and I got rid of Pinterest years ago.
@@americafirst9144 Agree ! The JF style is classic - quality , conservative , functional , comfortable , etc. A few updates & it still holds its own today .
Thank you Kay. I really enjoy all your videos. I can always relate to some of the things in them. I would like to ask if it's possible to make a video about hairstyles for women over 50. I feel it's important to know how to dress well but also how to do our hair. Maybe some tips on how to maintain the style would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and I wish you all the blessings for this season ❤❤
I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I could never do that topic justice, but check out Justin Hickox for just that topic. youtube.com/@justinhickox?si=qOovc9Saozdf7oag
What do you get complements on? What clothing makes you feel confident, sexy or approachable? What style would your friends say is "so you"? Which items do you find yourself gravitating to?
Me too. You would think after all these years we would know. At our age our style has changed because for me I am reduced to wearing stable shoes which really changes what you can wear and still look good. Good luck.
Good content but it would be helpful for many of us to see examples & help to compare w/ how we see ourselves vs. how we present ourselves to others . 🥰
My 3 words - Soft - soft colors, soft flowy fabrics (rayon) Playful - not too structured or too stiff but moveable, flowy Grace - well worn jeans (not worn out) with an elegant top & shoes (no heels) Small jewelry (pearls, silver or Rose Gold) I’m 73
I love the idea of guidelines and at the same time I start feeling boxed in!!!! Also have you or could you do a video with examples of why an article of clothing is say more modern than timeless or feminine than bohemian or in some instances both tailored and edgy, if that’s possible? Thanks for your consideration!
It’s all in a tab at the top of the website right now. But it will move at the end of the year and be filed under Blog Posts in the main menu, as my other style series are. But the Printables will stay in the library.
Sophisticated and ladylike. When I go to different dance venues, I will wear either a skirt or dressy dress. Other women wear similar dressy clothes, others wear jeans, casual tops or tee shirts. I get compliments on my clothes. I am retired so I got rid of the work clothes /suits, straight pencil skirts a long time ago. I have more weekend clothes.
I’ve been thinking about my style words for a while. So far I have two, classic and feminine. Number three eludes me, I think because sometimes I throw in a piece I love and wear that doesn’t quite fit my norm. Like a leather dress or jacket, a sequin pencil skirt. Then there’s my love for leopard print, something nobody else in my circle of friends is wearing. I did laugh when you mentioned “washable” as a no!
sounds like you we like similar styles. I have 2 leather skirts, but would love to find a leather dress. Love my 2 sequin skirts and get a lot of compliments on those. And I have a few leapard prints....a skirt, a leopard print top and I have a leopard print belt . Love wash and wear too.
I know my style. I can’t seem to find the clothes to match it. Secondly, how do you accommodate stying different style of pants with tops without having a closet stuffed with clothes, which is over whelming for me. For example wide leg pants I wear shorter slim fit tops, but with tighter, flare, bootcut etc I wear slightly looser tops. It’s as f you need several types of wardrobe to match pant styles.
@@edennis8578 Of course ! They're in the business to make money , whether it's overpriced designer originals or the copies that eventually end up in middle class women's closets . Thinking of Amanda Priestly's lines in " The Devil Wears Prada " explaining this " trickle down " process . 😂
Never wanted to look frumpy but because I’ve been married for like ever, I do dress like a lady. I do enjoy physical activities such as pulling weeds & landscaping my own yard so I don’t do fussy. I was never one for more than one or 2 pieces of jewelry or much obvious makeup. So at 70, this will take some thought choosing 3 style types!😊
Love wash and wear , but hang dry only. Very very few clothes that I need to take to the dry cleaner.....too expensive. Maybe a long time ago when I worked, I had to take suits to the cleaners. No more of that, thank goodness.
Certainly. Me, too. I wasn’t telling you not to look for washability. Just not to use that as a style angle. 😉 But I’m with you. I don’t put much at all in the dryer.
Informative and helpful, but the inspirational pieces or mannequins or pictures I see with my” style” are always on more shapeful bodies. At 73, i have that dreaded” middle age spread “. How do I take those “ skinny” looks and morph them into “no waist line” me. Uugggg ferl defeated. Thanks for your always good advice!
Well there are classic pieces - blazer, jeans, loafers, etc. and then there’s the Classic style. They are indeed two different things. Maybe that’s a video for the future.
Whenever I showed my ex new clothes he either said “that’s hot” (he loved it) or “well, it looks comfortable” (he hated it). Telling someone their outfit looks comfortable or casual is not a compliment. Comfort is assumed these days anyway, I don’t know anyone who wants to wear uncomfortable clothes or shoes. What I hate is the remark “what are you dressed up for?”, and similar comments or questions, just because I’m wearing a casual skirt or dress. A denim skirt and a sweater or a t-shirt dress or sundress are hardly office or black tie outfits! Dresses and skirts were the usual everyday clothes for women when I was young and I never switched, I’m just not as comfy in pants, especially jeans, which I hate. I think everyone should wear what they love most. I know if I had to wear sloppy black or gray poly/Spandex gym outfits or sweats everyday I wouldn’t bother to get dressed at all, these clothes are joy-killers. They’re not even comfy. Age 64, San Francisco.
I, too, wear dressier clothing than most of my friends because they suit me. When anyone says "why are you dressed up?" I reply with a question: are you comfortable in what you are wearing? The usual answer is: of course! My reply is: so am I. That usually stops the discussion. That question to me is a criticism of my style because they choose a more casual style and want everyone to look the same as they do. I would never ask anyone "why didn't you dress up?"
Kay, as usual, you are an inspiration. I wanted to share something with you about myself. I am 75 and have always loved fashion.
Then maybe your third word could reflect that unexpected twist. Maybe just the word “unexpected” or “nuanced” or “eclectic?”
@@DressedforMyDaywithKayHarms I call mine a " wild card " ! 😅
@ Yes! I like that.I think eclectic or unexpected.
Thank you very much!😊
You are so welcome! 😊
Will you share your new style angles?
Haha! When and if I change them, yes. But we’re talking small changes in word choice, not a new direction for my style.
You aren't wrong. I wonder if designers decided that having several pants styles all fashionable at once was a good way to make us buy more clothes?
@@edennis8578 I agree!
Haha, it is a conundrum indeed. I don’t know that I have input on that. But I’ll be thinking about it. 😉
Thanks for watching! I hope you enjoy your style journey.
I'm so glad the video was helpful! I know it can be challenging to style ourselves, but I believe everyone can find their own personal style.
I’m not sure I can recognize Classic style garments.😢
For the most part, that's Kay's look.
Well there are classic pieces - blazer, jeans, loafers, etc. and then there’s the Classic style. They are indeed two different things. Maybe that’s a video for the future.

Heads up -- Midi does not accept Medicare. Bummer.
Thanks for sharing.
I can’t believe that the beautiful blazer you are wearing is over $1600.00. Love it but not many of us can afford that.
Hahaha, well I’m not selling it anyhow. It was earned. And I do love it.
I'd love for us as women to celebrate the success of other women. Business success, or relationship success, or family success, or whatever it may be.

It’s so important to wear what you love and feel good in!
