Taylor...NOW look what you just made me do Tell me your thoughts on #TTPD, hope you enjoy this episode of Pop Gone Wrong 😜 Please don't kill each other (or me) Swifties
As a fellow Taylor fan, I agree with everything you said. So disappointing. This was such a downgrade in my opinion. I always loved her lyricism, but some of these lyrics made me roll my eyes or laugh out loud. It's fine if other people disagree and honestly think it's a great album, but I'm tired of the Swifties who worship anything she does like she's a God who can do no wrong.
ttpd is dissapointing? wthflip 😂😂 don’t get me wrong i don’t really like some songs but its overall a really good album and it seems like she’s dominating the music industry
I like quite a bit of Taylor’s music but gosh I couldn’t get into this one either. My biggest critic is how boring it is, but also the lyrics. Every song just sounds like nothing, even the ones I sort of like. No one is going to be talking about any of these songs when they talk about her best ones.
@@ShiningStarlight-hj3fmseems she will always dominate the music industry, no matter how good or bad the album actually is. And yes I was personally not into it, but I'm glad you are. Music is subjective
@@ShiningStarlight-hj3fm "and it seems like she's dominating the music industry" so let me guess, you're the type to tell yourself music is good because it's successful since you therefore think you're "supposed" to like it?
Except for wishing death on Kim Kardashian. That one went way too far. And I do not like Kim in the slightest. I don't wish death and I sure That's how it never put it in a song. That kind of karma literally one album after she talks about karma is her boyfriend. Karma is definitely this point looking like an ex-boyfriend.
@@marryweedjane a few in the first half stand out to me. I feel like I had to struggle through to get to the second half which does definitely feel more unique. I've seen people say it's a matter of who is producing and such.
@@emmikate The song wasn't Taylor wishing death on Kim, the song is about how she thanks Kim because Kim's disparaging actions that led to a public hate train during the time have helped her become the person she is today. The "wishing death" part referenced Taylor's mom being so furious at the angst Kim caused that she furiously exclaimed she wish Kim was dead.
I really hope that this isn't a trend that she keeps going on board with for her next few albums... I am deeply worried at this point, especially considering the money she is making and all of her fans
I think I saw one of her fans warning her in a video essay that she could have another Reputation flop era in the midst of her peak, with all this hyperproductivity and success being a setback if she's not careful. I guess he was right, taytay's lyricism should have taken a backsit for a bit 😂. It's easy to get cocky during such a successful period, thinking that anything you can do now is something you should do, and that it will be genius.
Thank god, I thought I was the only one. This album did not land for me at all. Almost all the songs sound alike and most of them are filler. I would like Jack Antonoff to go away for a while. Also, don't care about her personal life, and I don't want to have to read a cheat sheet to get what she's singing about. I went back and listened to folklore today, and it's still phenomenal, but yeah, it's the beginning of the creative downward spiral.
I would also really like jck antonoff to go away! all the songs since folklore inc. re recordings sound so simailar with that soft percussion/production and take the bite out of the songs (may be aaron desners influence too) she needs a big change for the next album!
Swifties saying that it’s not a commercial, it’s a “personal” album… yeah, I’m not sure about that: It’s not meant to be commercial, eh? With all the vinyl variants? With all the TikTok campaigns? Making playlists feeding the rabid fans with their theories about a person with mental problems being a cheater (when the one who cheated emotionally was her)? With releasing the second half (with all the “limited/exclusive” edition tracks) couple of hours later, making hardcore swifties buy it AGAIN to get the full experience? It’s not a charity release, it’s made to boost sales and charts. The mental gymnastics I swear to god…
every Taylor Swift album is personal to most Swifties, let's be real ...without pushing your comment aside though, yes this album and how it was released was atrocious
I want to know if she's actually this petty, self-obsessed, immature person as presented in the lyrics here or if it's all just put on as a very smart business decision because she knows it makes her money. I don't know which option is worse.
@@emmacovey6169 I actually really liked Folklore and Evermore, and I like her early albums too for what they are as fun teen pop. But Reputation really put me off with how vindictive and "poor me" it was. I thought with Folklore that she was maturing, and she's a very good storyteller when she's not totally focused on her own drama. But now it seems she's back on that train again so I'm out
It's concerning that this is the only negative review I have found for this album online when every other review says that this is an "8/10" or "10/10", basically all of which sum up the album as "it was her most vulnerable and personal album yet"... that really worries me for some reason
This album is a manic episode, and thank you for pointing out how much she’s punching down on Joe. She spends 31 tracks complaining about fame while bullying her ex for having depression?? Crazy!
Yes! It’s about Matty mostly. It must of been longer behind the scenes supply. Otherwise it’s just psycho to put so much energy into this guy, rather than Joe. Joe’s songs were her best! I think he tried to help her down a more lyrical path. And poor Joe. So shitty to write what she did publicly. Where is the respect. Making herself sound amazing as usually (despite covert humble pretence) what was his sin ? He didn’t deserve that. Shows how shallow and uncaring she truly is.
Part of the reason I struggle to listen to post Evermore Taylor is that she drops too many versions. I get that it makes her money because her fans eat it up, but from an outsider, it’s overwhelming and a bit disturbing how she’s taking advantage of her fans, but her fanbase is like a cult, which is in itself also disturbing. Evermore and Folklore were her last good albums.
I listened to her deluxe edition of this album, the one that's over 2 hours long, and while the first half is definitely a slog to go through, the second half is MILESTONES better than the first half, and now i'm baffled as to why she didn't use the 2nd half as the main album course!!
She has always punched down and set her fans against whoever she thinks wronged her, she's too old and accomplished to be so thin skinned and insecure .
I couldn't agree more with this review! As a Swiftie, I was so disappointed in this album. It feels rushed, unoriginal, and lazy. Half the tracks on the album sound almost exactly like previous songs she's written.
Until the past year or so I never really felt one way or the other about Taylor but my god it's gotten to a point where if I never heard her name again I would be happier. The amount of meme pages etc. I've unfollowed because they insist on forcefeeding her down everyone's throats is stupidly high
The problem is that Taylor Swift isn’t an artist anymore: she’s a brand. A brand to appeal to her psycho fan base. God I’m honestly sick of how inescapable she is. I don’t even hate her music overall (this album is mid but can’t deny she’s made bangers), but she has become a brand that has been plastered fucking EVERYWHERE. Even sports now lmao She’s literally the female version of Drake: an artist that can legit release them farting on a record and their fans will somehow get it to top the charts
It might be possible that she took some inspiration from her life but then improvised on the narrative. Also rich people are allowed to be sad. The song "The Prophecy" clearly states how she was wishing for a partner.
right! i will never understand the "shes so rich i cant feel bad for her" arguement. no matter how rich i get, i cant imagine myself being happy if i dont have any human connection and love in my life. actually, you dont even have to imagine being rich to admit this is true. most people ARE happier with simpler lives and bright camraderie. also if anything, i am more scared for rich people trying to find true love. they can probably never tell if they want you for YOU or your money.
I agree with every point made about how out of touch she is, but I don't think that's a very new complaint. I consider "folklore" and "evermore" to be her best works specifically because her writing isn't so focused on herself in those records. That being said, I still think "reputation" is her worst album. That album, in my opinion, has all the same writing issues TTPD has, what with the out-of-touchness and clumsy cursing and all, but it's also musically her most baffling one. TTPD is "just" extremely boring. Lastly, I want to touch on "The Anthology". I don't get why she insisted on releasing it attached to TTPD, because it's just a far superior album. Not that it's some sort of masterpiece or anything, but Dessner absolutely clears Antonoff in terms of production, and Taylor's lyrics, while still out of touch and far from her peak, are way less offensive than on the main release.
Also i find all her music videos as a director so lackluster (other than All too well) , whereas her past MV especially the ones directed by the likes of Joseph Kahn used to be so fun.
As an avid swiftie (not a crazy cult-like one I swear lol), a fan of the album, and a fan of you, I agree with your takes on all the commercialization, vinyl variants, etc. It gets to be a bit much. I agree there are some cringey lyrics on the album as well as some repetitive lyrics and themes , but I do think there is some AMAZING lyrics as well. loml is my favorite and is possibly one of the best Taylor Swift songs I've ever heard, it's so beautiful lyrically in my opinion. One thing I think about this album that is different from her others is I think it was not entirely meant to be popular or for her fans or anything like that. I think she just had some things she wanted to get off her chest and share with the world, without caring so much about how the album performs or how well it meshes together. That's why it may be messy at parts, but there's beauty in some of the mess. Is it my favorite album of hers? No. But is it a bad album? I don't think so. But that's just my opinion and I respect yours as well!
loml? there really is a song called that. it seems to juxterpose love of my life with loss of my life. I suppose it is questionable senitment. I don't think I have said that to anyone. What would be a good declaration of love, that is the question?
It’s hard to say she realeased an album that “wasn’t meant to be popular”, when there was a literal iheartradio streaming party of the ALL of the album on ALL of their stations. That’s a very typical commercial push.
@@whatgetsonmytits Fair point. I guess I mean more of like she's still going to promote it because she's proud of her work (and probably wants to make money off it I'm sure), but cares less so about people's reaction to it.
It's dissappointing because I became a fan during the Folklore/Evermore era and idk I expected the same depth from midnights and ttdp but they just don't measure up.
people tend to hate listen this album bc it's cool to hate Taylor Swift again and I hate that people hate so hard and just dont put any effort that they miss the ACTUAL GEMS of this album. I was not a fan of a majority of this album, BUT I was going through a breakup so some songs I related to, that being fortnight. But the genuine good songs imo were so long London, loml, and the smallest man who ever lived. everything else was crucial for her to write at the time bc she was going through a lot. Like woman just got out of a 6 year relationship because her man didn't want to marry her. Only for her to get back with a man who promised her marriage and kids when they were 25, and then he ghosts her and she is now left with nothing...and she's on a world tour and has to put on a fake smile. SO I GET WHY THIS ALBUM HAD TO BE WRITTEN. But because of that t was rushed and the pop songs were uneccesary. If this album turned out like how the anthology turned out, it would have been better.
All I can say is, “Thank You Taylor Swift,” for keeping the people at the front of those RSD lines occupied while I swerve my way to what matters most to me. I’m no fan, but I sure do appreciate how she has acted as a gateway of sorts for current and new generations of physical media collectors. A lot of independent record stores are probably still alive because of her. You all better hope she doesn’t drop too far off.
The only two songs that I actually liked on this album were "Down Bad" and "Guilty as Sin?", but mainly because they both remind me of one of my best friends whom I've had a crush on for years
I feel extremely vindicated in the fact that she is the most overrated artist out right now. At her core, she is a decent hit maker who has a good ear for melodies. But ask her fans and she is a godlike deity who can do no wrong. Her fans have elevated her to a pedestal she doesnt deserve. And the fact that she is putting out such mediocrity while at her most relevant, i think that says a lot.
As a Taylor Swift enjoyer, she isn’t overrated by the general public, but she is by her fans. Most of the general public makes fun of her and her music, while a lot of her fans act like she’s God. I think her music is decent, but it’s not unique or different. Her writing style isn’t for everyone. It’s often on the nose and that can irk people. By how things are looking, no one is going to be calling her one of the best artists ever.
@@yewmon-te1od I agree. I like her music but at this point most of her "succes" is built off of people who follow her every move so that they can critisize her. People who love her and people who hate her stream her music and that's why she is doing the numbers. To me her appeal is that her music is very approachable. I like other artists too but her catalogue is so big and she delivers exactly what I expect from her over and over again. I listen to other, maybe more artistic albums once or twice but never revisit them because you have to be in a specific mood for it imo.
I totally agree with this take. Her appeal is not about her music but rather about all the lore that accompanies it. Even her big fans seem to enjoy the guessing games about her exes/current bf more than anything else.
@@danielpatternson6149 Am I wrong? She isn’t one of the greatest vocalists or performers. Doesn’t have many critically acclaimed albums. Evermore and Folklore are her closest ones. Most people would agree that her strongest talent is her songwriting, and I still wouldn’t say she’s one of the greatest in that category either. She will be known as one of the most popular and successful singers of all time, but that’s about it.
This was such a torturous listen… If this album is considered an “Artistic Masterpiece”, it really makes me wonder how serious Swifties are when they say things like they would buy an album of Taylor making random noises. When some of the AI-generated “leaks” sound better than the proper album, you know you’ve got a problem!
I think it’s clear that most Swifties are fans of the person and not her music. They mainly focus on the lyrics, which is fine but they also focus on the Easter eggs or what it’s about rather than how good it sounds. Or they might be in denial. I listened to all of Taylors albums and this is by far her most boring and least captivating.
@yewmon-te1od that's one thing I hate his how much Swifties look for easter eggs in everything, she takes a selfie they analyze the stitch of her clothes or how many fence posts are in it and what it might mean instead of just enjoying the damn music!
It really is a cult they're attacking any anymore who has any criticism on the album i never understood the appeal of Taylor Swift to be honest she's just another pop star to me
Have you ever noticed how Taylor's music gets progressively worse the more she ties it to her celebrity drama and trending news? It MAY just be a coincidence, but I wonder if there MIGHT BE a causation there. 🤔
She had to tweet her overzealous stans and tell them NOT to harass John Mayer...and some still said they would ignore her wishes and harass him anyway!
I like Taylor Swift; I adore Evermore. However, whist there are about three songs I’ve replayed from TTPD, the others sound soooooo similar to each other. They blend into each other way too much. I don’t think it’s terrible though.
hey man, i hope you can do an i got it wrong episode on this one sometime in the future. because logically speaking, this video was posted like 3 days after the album came out, which means it was recorded and edited even before. it's an album of 31 songs, and it myself took me a few weeks to a MONTH to process all the songs. with an album this long you really have to sit down and digest it instead of judging immediately.
I think if the album had a different name more related to break ups or something, it would have a different perspective. From the name Tortured poets department, people genuinely expected poetry.
You're a brave boy, Jon Both for talking about your mental health journey and reviewing this beast of an album. As a fellow autistic music lover myself, it's so satisfying to see someone like me make it big. Been watching you for nearly three years now. Keep up the great work
Did anyone understand the intro skit lol I haven't seen a single comment about it (William Bowery is Joe Alwyn's penname, and he co-wrote a bunch of songs during folklore/evermore era)
I like Taylor Swift a lot but since Lover came out, I just feel like she is soulless. She has literally become everything that I thought she was in the beginning when all my tween friends loved her and the Jonas Bros and I was just barely tolerating it. I really miss country Taylor Swiss. I don't even like country as a genre that much. I don't hate it, injust don't go searching for it. But Taylor always sounded so genuine and now I just feel like she is a machine, just constantly pumping out content. I won't even call it music anymore. It's just something to release. Redecorating her old albums was genius and I really admired the idea behind doing that but adding all those Vault tracks on was too much. I literally felt like my ears were vomiting from eating too much at once too fast. And some of those songs were great too! It's just sad to see her turn into this. Taylor, I know you won't see this, but please please please SLOW the FUCK DOWN. I am actively avoiding this new album and I know it's only a matter of time before I give in. And this is coming from a fan of Reputation. Daddy I Love Him is literally the line that makes me hate the Little Mermaid.
Hi! Huge swiftie here, I just wanna say thanks for being brave enough to talk about this. I know a lot of people get really upset when Taylor’s criticized, but I think it’s a nice change of pace to see another perspective.
I wasn't crazy about it at first. But the more I listened and sat with it the last month the more it's growing on me. I think I would like but daddy I love him better if she didn't actually say but daddy I love him. Lol
That was due to what Ariel said to her daddy when he disapproved Eric in the little mermaid

Love hearing your thoughts, even when they sometimes differ from mine! Thanks for another great video Jon! Coming from someone who enjoys a good amount of Reputation and thinks Midnights was actually a solid pop album, this one didn't land with me at all. Only exception being The Prophecy. I generally like Taylor and have been a casual fan of a lot of her music for about 10 years now. I think she is a good artist and songwriter at her core. That being said, she isn't above constructive criticism. Neither is any other artist. I just don't know why many fans have to drum up so much hype around their favorite artists, portraing them as the best thing in music history, when music is so subjective. You can enjoy someone's work and have them be the best thing in your world, without the need for them to be the best thing in the entire world, if that makes sense? Not everyone is gonna share your opinion. It's ok to love this album or any other, while being respectful towards other people's critiques and music preferences.
8:27 Yup. A lot of the swifties have tried to tear that man apart. They go on every article about him and sprew hate. But he keeps pushing forward and I'm so proud of him!
I haven't heard this record enough times to have a solid opinion, but I find myself agreeing with a lot of the points made by the negative reviews. I don't hate the album, I've been finding some enjoyable moments here and there, but it's such a drag to get through, especially the extra tracks. One thing I'm particularly disappointed about is the lack of innovation. Taylor used to try different sounds with each album, I was looking forward to hearing what TTPD would sound like. Well, it sounds like an uninspired mix of Midnights (which itself was a mix of 1989 and reputation, soundwise) and folklore/evermore. The only interesting tracks in that regard are Florida and that one rock-ish song on the second half. Back when TTPD was announced, I think I was one of the very few fans that wasn't happy about it. I'm a recent fan, I still haven't fully processed all 10 albums plus 4 vaults. Taylor's been releasing music every year since 2019, it's been mostly good music but it's too much and I'm the type of person who needs to spend time with music in order to digest it properly. I didn't need another 16 tracks to add to the pile, it's too much! Still, I thought TTPD would at least be good since Taylor's last few albums and vaults have mostly been good, but apparently that's not even the case anymore. I'm really looking forward to your Problems With TS video, I really need to vent on that comment section.
I'm a swiftie and I agree with you. I think a lot of the reddit swifties don't like this either. Of course the toxic stans will worship everything she puts out. When i say toxic i'm talking like the people who send d**th threats to 10-year-ago exes or show up at jack's wedding uninvited
The AOTY rating distribution was unreal (and still kind of is). It started off looking like the letter E thanks to bot accounts mindlessly dropping both 100's and 0's instead of sharing their honest thoughts 🥴. Rob had to delete so many bot accounts too (I don't know how he does it all by himself every single time this happens). Most of the actual reviews are around a 5/10.
I'm also surprised she titled this emphasizing poetry when it was the weakest lyrically, like folklore / evermore is much better. But then again, she probably is depressed and her creativity has decreased. I'm also disgusted how she is talking about Joe, she even had a song 'Infidelity' where she admits to cheating on him because he didn't love her enough.. like wha? I'm cheating on you and it's your fault..what a gaslighter. But she's just shooting her own foot, nobody worthy will want to get involved with someone so manipulative & spiteful.
Honestly I thought the album was alright but everyone hyping it up as this classic I don’t get it, the lyrics are laughable and most of the songs fall in line with what she usually does, I get it it’s Taylor swift but people claim she’s this game changing artist and I don’t see her changing much, I did like the synth pop in the first half and post Malone so it’s 5/10
I cant believe i waited till the last second for the album to drop.. only to be disappointed after the first track.. my friend said they all sound the same and i couldnt agree more..
Fellow Taylor fan here, this album was very mixed for me. There was a sharp, sassy midtempo pop album somewhere in all of this, but there's just so much shit to wade through I'm starting to wonder if I'm gonna get cholera.
You literally speak what’s on my mind! I’m a Taylor swift fan, bought albums and faved 100+ songs of her on Spotify. I listened to the deluxe (anthology) album TWICE, and it was a painful. The first half is a disappointing white noice, and the second half is an aromatherapy white noise. I feel like she (and her team) just wants to get more money without caring about her fans 😢 (already super sad at the 1989 Taylor Version)
I'm already not a Swiftie (never have been) and haven't even listened to the album. I don't plan to listen to it either. The way you talk about the lyrics (which I must agree with) makes her seem very immature and not willing to branch out of her comfort zone. She needs a break and time to realizee her own wrongdoings instead of blaming everybody else around her via her songs. Maybe then she may even realize that her fanbase is super cult-ish and are part of the problem for putting her on a pedestal and worshipping the ground she walks on no matter what she does.
As a longtime swiftie , I needed to say that this album is not needed. I will always listen to Taylor swift , but the Swifties need to stop acting like she’s god and everything she does is a masterpiece. I tried listening to the album but I could only tolerate forthright. Like the rest of the comments,Taylor needs to take a break and the Swifties need to stop being so overly defensive over everything. Not every one is going to agree with you about Taylor and I myself had disagreed with her. Jon you’re obviously entitled to you own opinion and also all the toxic fan bases need to chill out.
@@SummersFrost You have Melodrama in your profile pic you should know better if you're stanning one of the best albums in existence. Tortured Poets is nothing but mediocre and forgettable

This album was a slog and I wasn’t really a big fan of Midnights personally due to the flat production IMO and the lyrics being super corny and cringey, and TTPD feels like it doubles down on that, but I’ll give Midnights this, I was never bored. You’re right on her relying on the “Taylor Swift-ism” on this album to where it’s gotten predictable and uninspired at this point. And you compare this to like a watching a Marvel movie, but at least certain MCU movies, the best ones mainly, excite me or try to do something different and surprise me. This album felt like the success and recent critical acclaim get into Taylor’s head like she can’t miss this time but no one is there to tell her to let her ego down a bit, especially with these very “Woah is me…” lyrics. She needs to get away from Jack Antonoff and work with someone else, but it seems unlikely at this point.
I came back to this channel because I remember you praising Folklore at the time, and your reaction made me like the album! It was your take on The Last Great American Dynasty 💗 That did something major for me!!! As for TTPD, fair enough you don’t like it too much. Still glad I got to hear your take!
The sad thing is exactly what you mentioned at the start of the video, the deluxe songs are better. I like the run from but daddy I love him to Florida but that’s it from the main album for me. I honestly thought songs on the album were just remade versions of midnights tracks or that I had heard them as singles somewhere before. I hate to say it as an old bleachers fan but I think Jack is a big reason for why pop is really bland right now between Bleachers new album, Taylor’s last 2 albums, and the last 1975 album. Really hoped this would be an album about the mind of the most famous person on the planet, but only one meh song came from that concept sadly. Very disappointed to say the least
I personally really liked this album. As someone who had a short 4 month relationship with someone who was a long term friend beforehand and promised me everything and then left me by ghosting me the lyrics and storytelling in this album really resonated with me. I think the intensity of those emotions is something you can only really understand if you’ve experienced it and I related a lot to Taylor on this album. I wasn’t a massive fan of the production on the first half of the album but I could really appreciate the lyrics and storytelling (I’m choosing to ignore the title track though), and I do think the second half of the album is definitely the stronger of the two. I don’t think it’s anywhere near Taylor’s best work for me (evermore, folklore, Red) but it’s still not as jarring as some of her stuff I haven’t enjoyed (reputation, Midnights). The biggest mistake people make (Swifties and non Swifties) when listening to Taylor’s music is listening to it through the lens of trying to work out what the drama is and what the songs are about. Her music is so much more enjoyable if you listen to it just as a song and not a like a tabloid article and pick up on themes instead. I think this album is the biggest victim of this. The discussion around Taylor has also become so polarised in recent years from people on both sides so it makes it difficult to have a nuanced opinion of her music, in my opinion.
It’s definitely her most “human” album. She doesn’t really paint herself in the best light and I found it very compelling. I think that’s the point of it though, and a lot of people are missing the mark on that.
@@Ari-jm6xx I mean… sure. She’s at the height of her career with the Eras tour, got her masters back & got 2 Grammys. Anyone who’s killing it will have fans and haters. My point is, she’s putting this album out at the height of her career where she doesn’t paint herself in the best light, and it’s a very interesting parallel.
I watched her documentary on Netflix and when she was announcing Lover in the boardroom, everyone clapped and didn’t say anything when she announced that there were going to be 18 tracks on it. 18 TRACKS. No one warned her about it being too bloated or the fact that ME! wasn’t a good idea.
@@yewmon-te1odI watched an earlier documentary about her and she spent like half of it mentioning how desperate she is to have the general public believe she is a “good person”. At some point they even try to make it seem like her being openly pro-LGBT is a huge financial risk for her just because some of her fans are conservative, and she even needs to have an entire board meeting to discuss if the pros outweigh the cons. No, I’m not kidding, it’s just that insane!
Well regardless This record is probably gonna chart Number 1 on the billboards anyway for a longer time than she and Matty Healy were together in their relationship. (Somebody smelling a forest fire in the distance?)
I am a sucker for long albums and I am DISAPPOINTED in the anthology edition of this album so I agree with you on the review and I'll say it I rather listen to reputation and the deluxe edition of midnights but i like some songs on the album like the collabs with post malone and florence and the machine
Have you ever been disappointed when someone you love and admire goes down a bad path? That's how I feel about Taylor right now. I hope it's not the beginning of the end
The beginning of this video... MY GOD you're so real for this! Having said that, there are levels of ick I experienced while listening to this album. Being so cold and disrespectful to Joe, all of the wet rat songs, the lack of self-reflection and accountability, clunky lyrics... We did not need to hear any of this.
I don't think that there is a pulse, synth or otherwise, on this album. She's a talented song writer but she's trying to cash in on what Lana Del Rey and people like that are doing. It's just a miserable sounding album. She's written break up songs for most of her career but they at least had something to them. This just sounds so boring and flat. She's has a lot of talent but she needs to broaden her horizons when it comes to what to write about. I have only really heard her hits and only heard this album in full because they played it at work, but it seems to me that she write exclusively about her ex boyfriends and related dramas. A break up probably does feel like the end of the world when you're 15, but she's in her 30s now and has been through so many break ups that she must have built up some sort of tolerance by now. Add to that the fact that she's a billionaire and one of the most famous people alive today, I don't see why she is writing such miserable sounding music about the same topic that she's always written about. There are so many reasons to be miserable in the world today and if she was tackling some of those issues, then I could understand the misery, but she's not. How many times can she tell the same story?
I hate it when people think "Oh, she's in her 30s, so she can't write songs about relationships anymore" So what? That's what she built her career on! If Nancy Cartwright and Yeardley Smith can be over 60 and still voice Bart and Lisa Simpson, why can't Taylor Swift sing about what she sings about best? smh
My MAAAAN!! Saying what We're all thinking. 20 variants to get all the songs. Lol Talk about taking advantage of your fans.. if you're going to come out with a double album, put all the songs on the album. It's a joke at this point.
I'm not a Swiftie but I've always been pretty Swiftie adjacent , I'm an avid enjoyer and have liked everything she's ever done, hell I even liked Reputation and any time she's ever come out with an album I had it on repeat for a week. But I honestly haven't enjoyed anything she's done since evermore, I honestly don't think we'll get folklore & evermore ever again. I don't really give a fuck about the re releases or the vault, midnights was mid as hell but I can pick out a few tracks that stood out that I enjoyed. TTPD I got 40 seconds into Fortnight and said "nope". So props to you for even listening to that piece of shit, because I don't have the time, energy or desire to slog through it, not even for Post Malone or Florence, who I both love. I accidentally heard "clara bow" on tiktok and I actually do like that song, but I'm not gonna sit through 2+ hours of basically white noise to find the few tracks that stand out to me. Swifties can come at me bro. She sucks ass now. not even a hater man, i'm just really disappointed because she used to be better than this. fame and money and swifties ruined her.
As a veteran Swifties, I don't think she sucks ass now, but I do think we're seeing a downward trend in the quality of her work. She needs to slow the fuck down
I feel like this album does not paint a good picture of Taylor. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like a lot of the songs make her seem unlikable and a little immature. I really wish she’d make more albums like “Speak Now,” “folklore,” and “evermore”.
I'm not a superfan or anything, but I've been an avid Swiftie for a minute and I just feel like every album she's released recently (new) hasn't been good. Midnights, in my opinion, inspired absolutely nothing special. I expect Taylor to be coming with a new sound that the genre hasn't heard before for the most part, or to so thoroughly make that sound in that genre her own that it's immediately classic the way folklore is to me. But Midnights felt like every other electropop bit, which wasn't awful but nothing standout, and TTPD the album without the anthology part all just sounds the same to me if we're being honest. The first two songs I especially can't stand. The Anthology is so much better and I wish she had released it separately because I don't want to hear a quarter of that album in my whole album listen-through. I would've much preferred a twin album. I just feel like her originality has maybe taken a hit, it's not the coolest that she's hyper obsessing over Matty Healy which was a blip in her whole timeline, and I also can't stand that occasionally she's throwing in TikTok one liner soundbites like "blah blah blah but I'm soo productive!!" on that one song. She has more in her locker, so I expect more. Would love to hear your thoughts on the Anthology part. I always really enjoy your videos, even though I don't normally agree with everything said (read: rep is my favorite album and I stand by it).
As a swiftie, I forgive you and I paritally agree- I did my part and stayed up till midnight to listen to the album. When I first listened to it, I was really taken aback because it felt like Repulaton Taylor's lyrics, which I hated, and Lover Taylor's synth and I did not enjoy it as much as Midnights. Taylor is at her best when she incorpeates her "folklore" lyrics, not when she tries to wrap heartbreak in a bow. I will say, I thought LOML, Florida!!! and So Long London were strong lyrically and felt more genuine. As a bleachers fan, I have no idea what is happening with Jack's producing because I felt like he did a weird job on his own album. When you have the time, I would check out some of the Deluxe songs, I think Taylor has an issue with picking songs, The Lakes is my favorite T.S song and its a bonus track- "Black Dog", "How did it end", are all solid. "thanK you amIEe" gives such speak now vibes. Thank you for your review :)
I only made it through the first three songs, and I haven’t even thought of listening to the rest. I don’t know, I just never bothered to finish the album because the first three songs felt like they blended and it felt the same to me.
Coming back here to say that Midnights already seemed somewhat confused in its lyrics. I excused it because, coming out of the Folklmore era, it seemed like she was really trying new things, writing with new people (Dessner, Big Red Machine in general, Lana) and I thought, “That's alright, the influences need to settle into her writing style”. But um... Is it getting worse?? Lmao 😭😭 TTPD is so incredibly inconsistent in its lyrical content. Also what the fuck is a tattooed golden retriever?? How could you look at that and be like, “Oh yeah, what a line”? It bothers me because it also has some pretty good, classically Taylor moments that are overshadowed by the bad lines. Lyrically, it's too unpredictable. Musically, it's too predictable. I'm still waiting to see the absolute brilliance that she showed with Evermore back in action
Been a swiftie since 2006, every album, every tour. This is the worst album she’s ever made, and I’m embarrassed that I spent $200 on these vinyls actually thinking she was gonna deliver on this “poetry” promise. Get over KimYe, stop playing a victim, MH is a loser, and also wtf did the swifties do that’s so bad we’re now on the hit list?
I agree as a fellow swiftie. I'm embarrassed to listen to But daddy I love him. After listening to this album I feel like I don't know taylor at all or she changed so much. I'm honestly very disappointed 😞
I just really hope whatever she does that she works with a complete new team of writers and producers for whatever she does next cos her sound on this album is so stale
@@MusicByJBAbsolutely Not. They wrote and produced some of the worst songs of taylor swift's career such as look what you made me do bad blood Shake it off Blank space And a whole lot More that im not going to say.
I feel like she should’ve waited AT LEAST till next year to drop something. She’s had so much saturation and spotlight with her back-to-back albums and tours; it’s all too much. I don’t get how you can organically grow a new or changed sound and mindset within such a short amount of time, using the same producer and team endlessly. It seems like she didn’t get much outside artistic input or perspective or even simply time to herself to reflect on past experiences. It is what it is as the album is already out, sadly…
I remember when she announced a new album and we all thought Reputation TV. That would have been much better even though that was too sook already as she was was on tour and just released 1989 TV (which I thought she botched a lot of the songs)
She needs to work with different producer or writers. I like the idea of loyalty, but she likes to experiment and try to experiment with different producers or writers. Lots of skips in this albums 😮💨😮💨
If I cut down the album into the best 12-15 tracks (mostly deluxe songs) it’s actually pretty good. My biggest issue is there is no innovation here. I can appreciate her brutal honesty at points, but it’s still not very interesting. She desperately needs to take a break and get Jack out of the studio. The best moments by far are the cuts with Aaron.
I agree with just about everything that was said in this review... this definitely seems like the beginning of an era where Taylor Swift is creatively dry and only cares about the lifestyle and milking everyone's bank accounts. This album is a complete snoozefest and can get absolutely cringeworthy at times.
Totally agree with a lot of this. Have you checked out Lizzy McAlpine's new album yet? I know you really liked Five Seconds Flat, and I'm interested in your thoughts on Older!
Sadly pretty disappointed with Lizzy’s album 😭 fell pretty flat for me and I thought the tracklisting made it feel kinda messy, nowhere near as bad as Taylor but a disappointment imo
This album actually reminds me of Metallica’s St. Anger for some reasons: 1. Fundamentally broken production, percussion about as annoying and repetitive as the St. Anger snare drum. 2. Pretty much no hooks or choruses, the songs were made to go through emotions rather than make a cohesive pop song. It’s like when Metallica chose not to have guitar solos in St. Anger; the subject matter of the songs were unusually personal for James Hetfield. 3. The album and some tracks are way too long.
Exactly what came to my mind because when St. Anger dropped I was 17 years old and Metallica was my favorite band and I listen to that album thinking it was great simply because Metallica made it because I was a dumb 17 year old fan boy…six months later it hit me that that album was trash. Expect the same from the so called hardcore Swifties when the reality hits them in the face and all of sudden this album hits the dust bin of history. I can only dream that in ten years this is a Todd in the Shadows Trainwreckords episode and the oversaturation of Taylor comes to an end.
Also same…I’ve been here since 2006. Teardrops was the first song I’ve heard and I’ve been to all of her concerns. Don’t tell me I don’t get it the album or I’m not a real swiftie. I’m allowed to critique and have opinions and I’m so glad I found this video that just validated how I felt/am currently feeling, tbh
Honestly fact that you even had to bring up “don’t tell me I’m not a real fan if I don’t get the album” signals how unhinged a certain part of this fanbase is. They need a reality check, and honestly so does Tay Tay herself given the writing we got on this record.
I honestly rate the album 8/10. The music in the album are so heartbreaking. But my problem with the album is the length, its too long to listen and some songs have the same lyrics.
I randomly heard Florida yesterday on Amazon music as it was thrown in and I thought it was cool. Curios to listen to the rest of this train wreck thanks to you.
I hope she takes all this criticism to improve herself, 'cause I know she can do way better than this, and she has done it before. She just needs to take a break 'cause fr all of it sounds so forced and inauthentic.
there are some songs I really like on this album and I don't think the lyrics overall are quite as bad as some are making them out to be. however, I agree it's not as memorable as her other albums. to me, this reads as a catharsis album of sorts. she was going through a lot all at once and had to express her feelings the way she always does, which is though songwriting. I actually think if she took more time with it instead of releasing it in the middle of her tour, it could've been a lot better. she could've cut down the track list to just the best ones, maybe saving some of the others for bonuses, and she could've had more time to work on lyrics and production. it could've been better, but I do think people are generally being a bit dramatic about how "bad" it is
Honestly I don’t think Matty is actually a racist, just kind of an edge lord. I think people overplay the mostly minor stuff he’s done. Plus he didn’t even make the jokes a lot of people said he made.
It’s so bad it’s honestly embarrassing. Also I’m sorry for the hellfire coming upon you from the swifties after this review. I hope you survive I believe in you.
I admit I've never been a huge fan, but I didn't mind some of her early material. What really confirmed to me that this album is a dud was when my mother told me she thought it was boring, and I've never heard her say that about any of the other albums.
I didn’t hate this album, I really liked the first 2 songs, I like that kind of sad but sentimental melodic pop song. I also enjoyed Guilty as sin and can do it with a broken heart. The rest of the album is ok but not great. I don’t look into the lyrics that much tho. I do find some lines goofy but they don’t bother me that much tho.
I’m not gonna lie I was not totally into it at first but wow did this album whiplash me. I went from generally liking it to being obsessed. I think this one is a grower or maybe just works for me! It will be in my rotation
Taylor...NOW look what you just made me do
Tell me your thoughts on #TTPD, hope you enjoy this episode of Pop Gone Wrong 😜

Music is subjective

so let me guess, you're the type to tell yourself music is good because it's successful since you therefore think you're "supposed" to like it?
How we came from FOLKLORE AND EVERMORE to "charlie Puth should be a bigger artist"??? I quit.
My biggest problem is that every song sounds the same like I can't think of one song that stands out.
There were a few that stood out sonically and, understandably, the only ones I enjoyed.
They all sound different to me maybe that's just me
@@marryweedjane a few in the first half stand out to me.
Read a review saying this album is the result of Swift making an album because she CAN, not because she SHOULD. Yep, couldn’t agree more with that lol
I really hope that this isn't a trend that she keeps going on board with for her next few albums... I am deeply worried at this point, especially considering the money she is making and all of her fans
@@unoriginal4294I would totally recommend the second part of this album. It’s miles better than the first half
She made this album more for herself and less for the fans. This album is about her breaking up with her boyfriend of six years (no hate)
She needs to take a break for at least a couple years when the tour/re-recordings are done. Everyone not a hardcore Swiftie is TIRED
This!
YES!!! You think she would have learned this by now!
This!
Tired? No one is forcing you to listen to her music. 🤔
You can stop listening to her anytime and let Swifties enjoy more music from her.
Yeah that’s a great point. Her music is almost too self referential now that it feels like if you’re not into the lore then her stuff isn’t as good.
Folklore and Evermore look more and more like flukes.
I would also really like jck antonoff to go away! all the songs since folklore inc. re recordings sound so simailar with that soft percussion/production and take the bite out of the songs (may be aaron desners influence too) she needs a big change for the next album!
You can tell Joe Alwyn is an excellent writer cuz he contributed in Evermore and Folkere
@@MA-yc7pz Right???!
Swifties saying that it’s not a commercial, it’s a “personal” album… yeah, I’m not sure about that:
It’s not meant to be commercial, eh? With all the vinyl variants? With all the TikTok campaigns? Making playlists feeding the rabid fans with their theories about a person with mental problems being a cheater (when the one who cheated emotionally was her)? With releasing the second half (with all the “limited/exclusive” edition tracks) couple of hours later, making hardcore swifties buy it AGAIN to get the full experience? It’s not a charity release, it’s made to boost sales and charts.

Even just the title is to narcissistic for me.
The title is meant sarcastically. The term is used to mock the pretentiousness of a former partner in the title track
@christinavanbeek I genuinely believe that Taylor views herself as a poet though.
Yeah, I agree that her song writing was at its best when she was with Joe
Part of the reason I struggle to listen to post Evermore Taylor is that she drops too many versions. I get that it makes her money because her fans eat it up, but from an outsider, it’s overwhelming and a bit disturbing how she’s taking advantage of her fans, but her fanbase is like a cult, which is in itself also disturbing.
Evermore and Folklore were her last good albums.
Hey, Midnights was pretty good
I listened to her deluxe edition of this album, the one that's over 2 hours long, and while the first half is definitely a slog to go through, the second half is MILESTONES better than the first half, and now i'm baffled as to why she didn't use the 2nd half as the main album course!!

I get it man, it’s unreal and almost inescapable
She's becoming over-saturated and people are getting Swift fatigue.
Even sports now lmao
She’s literally the female version of Drake: an artist that can legit release them farting on a record and their fans will somehow get it to top the charts
I know, I hate it when ppl think "Oh, she's rich, she can't complain about her problems" It's possible for anyone to suffer
For me Red is her best, it gets points for experimentation
Also i find all her music videos as a director so lackluster (other than All too well) , whereas her past MV especially the ones directed by the likes of Joseph Kahn used to be so fun.
I absolutely agree that the Anthology tracks are leagues better but that's bc she worked with Aaron on most of those and not Jack

Where is the woman who wrote folklore and evermore? TPPD is so meh

A lot of independent record stores are probably still alive because of her. You all better hope she doesn’t drop too far off.

There is something utterly disturbing about people having to fear fan discourse over honest criticism.
11:04 that song was far better than the entirety of the Tortured Eardrums Department Anthology.
@@yewmon-te1od "no one is going to be calling her one of the best artists ever" you're joking right?
This whole album sounds like it was produced by AI... either that or everyone who were in the process of making this album were on autopilot mode
This is a pop trend in general.
And she knows by now that her fans send death threats to people she hates, so that aspect of her songs concerns me.
Y'all are aware titles can be ironic, right?
You're a brave boy, Jon
Both for talking about your mental health journey and reviewing this beast of an album. As a fellow autistic music lover myself, it's so satisfying to see someone like me make it big. Been watching you for nearly three years now. Keep up the great work

Well, now that you explain who WB is I get the lyrical reference. Or the lack of lyrical gravitas.
I'm really looking forward to your Problems With TS video, I really need to vent on that comment section.
in before all the swifties throw a shit fit because not everyone worships every single thing their 'mother' craps out 💀
I'm a swiftie and I agree with you. I think a lot of the reddit swifties don't like this either. Of course the toxic stans will worship everything she puts out. When i say toxic i'm talking like the people who send d**th threats to 10-year-ago exes or show up at jack's wedding uninvited

@@lance_374 the Twitter discourse has been insane, they've turned the album into a full on meme a la Morbius/Madame Web 🤣
Omg I saw a swiftie say Beyoncé is behind all this
I'm also surprised she titled this emphasizing poetry when it was the weakest lyrically, like folklore / evermore is much better.
High Infidelity is about her cheating on Calvin Harris with Tom Hiddleston, not Joe
The person she cheated on was Calvin Harris with Tom Hiddleston, not Joe but I don't fully disagree with your point
T. Swift enjoyer here. Album is mid as hell.
What didn't you like about 1989 TV? Just curious
The problem for me wasn’t even having elements of her life and complaining. It was about the bad lyrics. I was expecting poetry!
It was like an 8 year old so proud of their first haiku
the fuck?!?

Hey, I get where you’re coming from. Thanks for actually taking the time to express your opinion in full without just yelling
It’s definitely her most “human” album. She doesn’t really paint herself in the best light and I found it very compelling. I think that’s the point of it though, and a lot of people are missing the mark on that.
But the public already doesn't see her in a good light. Her fans will, no matter what.
The album still sounds flat and lifeless no matter what she’s trying to achieve with it.
Taylor Swift is truly the female equivalent of Kanye- they both desperately need someone to tell them “NO”
The 2009 VMAs were really a canon event for both of their lives
I hope it never gets to the same level with her
I watched her documentary on Netflix and when she was announcing Lover in the boardroom, everyone clapped and didn’t say anything when she announced that there were going to be 18 tracks on it. 18 TRACKS. No one warned her about it being too bloated or the fact that ME! wasn’t a good idea.
@@judgesaturn507well they obviously have their differences but the parallels in their ego and cult fanbases are pretty uncanny.

There are many reasons to be miserable in the world today but that only applies to us peasants, not to a rich white girl ..
So many people have compared this album to Lana's work and I have to agree that Taylor tried and miserably failed to recreate the same vibe
I really wish she’d make more albums like “Speak Now,” “folklore,” and “evermore”.
and Red and 1989
I'm not a superfan or anything, but I've been an avid Swiftie for a minute and I just feel like every album she's released recently (new) hasn't been good.
Man..are u alright?

Honestly very much agree. Glad to see I'm not the only one
The deluxe tracks are so boring I fell asleep twice. Every deluxe song sounds the same as the last imo.
Yeah, she and Aaron make the best music together
Anger for some reasons:
Funny you say that, I’m watching Some Kind of Monster (Metallica doc about St. Anger) as I read this
Exactly what came to my mind because when St.
@@freeparking301physical copies of it will end up in used CD shops and thrift stores, for sure!

Oh most definitely. It’s horrific.
Totally respect your decision to not review the anthology. However, I‘m super curious - which songs on it do you like?
Meh production with really bad and pointless lyrics, no riffs and no good songs! Edit :- I hated this shit
Damn that is a high score ..
I actually think if she took more time with it instead of releasing it in the middle of her tour, it could've been a lot better. she could've cut down the track list to just the best ones, maybe saving some of the others for bonuses, and she could've had more time to work on lyrics and production. it could've been better, but I do think people are generally being a bit dramatic about how "bad" it is
1:20 THIS is exactly my problem with this album. It's like she had so much good material for a book, but she wrote an album instead
I would have wished for a Autobiographie - there, the Lyrics would have been somewhat okay ... but this ... O.o
It's like, she just released anti-hero
which honestly, felt like an attempt to subvert criticism about dating Matty Healy and her jet emissions.
Thank you!
