    Eric likes to cover his influences and music he loves but with his own musical voice. Many times his covers boost sales of the original. He also has a great voice!

    The original was by the Wailers before Bob went solo. Eric changed the way the opening lines were sung,I think for the better. Subsequent versions by Bob adopted Eric's changes. This was Clapton's only #1 hit and it helped bring both reggae and Bob Marley into the mainstream.🎶🏝️

    As usual, great choice. But I’m surprised that this live version wasn’t recommended over the studio version! 10x better!

    Eric, by his own admission, didn’t think he did the song justice and had to be talked into including it on the album. It wasn’t until a phone call by Bob Marley, telling him he liked his version, that Eric was relieved and then watched it go to #1.

  • @oldskool4612

    Eric is a living legend. Yes he was singing on his cover of I Shot The Sherrif. Eric did a lot of covers. He idolized one of my favorite artists JJ Cale. It would be great if you two would react to JJ Cale's original version of Cocaine off his 1976 album Troubadour. Eric made that song a classic and covered additional JJ Cale tunes. Keep on keeping on gentlemen. ✌️

    • @CuriousGeorge1111
      @CuriousGeorge1111 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think JJ Cale is a great recommendation. As genuine, sweet, and melodic as they come, with hard-won wisdom to share. Cocaine, They Call Me The Breeze (his shuffle rhythm fits the song perfectly), After Midnight, Crazy Mama, Rock And Roll Records, and many more great records.
      Here's Eric Clapton and Tom Petty playing Rock N Roll Records, a personal favorite. Check out this groove:

    Interesting (to me anyway) that Clapton purists applauded this reggae cover...

    Great song from my youth, but like Bob's version better. Just want to double @oldskool4612 Old Skool here, and see if you'd react to some JJ Cale. Clapton spent a lot of the 70's covering or emulating JJ, it'd be nice to see someone react to JJ's originals like Cocaine from Troubadour, or After Midnight (or Crazy Mama or Call Me the Breeze or You Got Me On So Bad or ...)

    As far as covers go, this was definitely honest, solid, respectful and true, but I don't see how it adds anything above the original. 100 out of 100 times, if I wanted to hear this song, I'm going with Bob Marley. Speaking of Marley, for lyrics, he is #1 for me with Dylan as a close 2nd. There is no version of a deserted island music list that doesn't have Bob Marley on it.

    Eric Clapton, was best known as a blues guitarist, but he loved reggae. When he recorded Bob Marley's "I Shot the Sheriff," it quickly zoomed to the top of the charts, becoming a #1 hit. The popularity of this cover song actually helped propel Bob Marley to international fame, introduced reggae to a wider audience (mostly white people), and ultimately became a significant point in bringing attention to amazing music and artist that might not have been known worldwide. "Babylon By Bus (Live)" [Remastered] by Bob Marley & The Wailers is a must-own masterpiece that is constantly overlooked. Hope y'all play some of Marley's music in the future.

    Guys, something I realized while listening…What we are missing in today’s music: Enunciation of Words.
    Y’all had brought-up the point in Billy Joel’s singing style, and you’ll hear it in most of the reactions your doing. It was a “proper” manner for vocalist. If your not Enunciating the Words, the lyrics are lost.
    I feel when people started storming to post music on social media and an “artist”; mentors, training, wisdom was lost thus, we are where we are today.

    This album (“461 Ocean Boulevard” - 1974) was a comeback for Clapton
    It had been three years since the release of his self titled first solo album, because of his heroin addiction.
    It was a commercial success and the beginning of his career’s resurgence.
