The sizes of vehicles in the US continues to shock me. It’s crazy to think that this monstrosity is only considered ”mid-sized”!
It is midsized tho when compared to a suburban or a 3/4 ton truck
You should see an expedition max lol
We got big wide open roads you can drive whatever you want.
You probably haven't seen a GMC Yukon XL before....
You’ve probably never witnessed the biggest suv ever that Ford made called the Excursion!!! Biggest suv ever made!!! An I still own one…. THERE AMAZING LOL
Doug is the type of guy that instantly cackles like a villain whenever he uses a car microphone
Thanks for reminding me of his Maybach Review where he did exactly that but in a much more fitting Car
It was a beautiful moment to witness
I was in in San Diego yesterday and ngl I was hoping to catch a glimpse of doug driving
the amount of people who hero worship Doug is truly pathetic
@@2thebaum We're just being silly, you should try it.
My favorite thing about this car is that you just know it’s gonna last forever. No supercharger, no turbo charger, No hybrid system. Just a good old 3.5 V6 it’s gonna last for 250,000 miles.
Yeah it won't last because of their 4 cylinders shutting for gas saving
@@uium Yeah those systems always suck. Ought to just disable them with a tune or something to save your engine
@@uium My purchased new 2003 Pilot has 270K miles but I won't buy a new one with the engine that shuts down cylinders.
We bought one of these in June (Elite trim) and just got back from a 13 state, 5,000 mile road trip with three adults, two dogs, and a bunch of our stuff. It was a magnificent road trip vehicle and we are super happy with our purchase so far. I know some people bitch about the size of the touchscreen (it's 9" in our Elite, while the new Accords have 12.1") but honestly in real world driving it's totally fine. I'd enthusiastically recommend this rig for anyone considering a new 3 row. Came down to Pilot vs Telluride for us and we just preferred Honda at the end of the day. PS - I daily a Mk 7.5 GTI so that's my primary frame of driving reference.
How was your mpg on your road trip?
Screen needs to be at least 15" and it needs a 4-cylinder turbo hybrid IMO
One more quirk/feature of the cargo area, the subfloor area is sized so you can store the (easily removable) middle seat if you have the 8 seater configuration. Allowing you to have a 7 seater day to day but covert it to an 8 seater when you need it.
Not on the trailsport like this one
I always wonder why the didn’t give the MDX enough underfloor space to store the removable seat. It’s such a good feature.
they think MDX buyers dont want THAT much practicality @@icculus
@@matthewbarker8864 There are other trims that were mostly ignored in the review.
The engine bay looks clean as hell for a stock modern vehicle.
Very true, it looks accessible and that's a big deal nowadays.
Dont forget that the honda v6 engines are extremely well built and reliable..
honda for you they are one of the few companies that amazes me to this day. I’m especially fond of Lotus and Pagani, Aston Martins are great too. But Honda has made some of my favorite vehicles, they put a lot of love and care into the build
I’ve had my first Honda for 2 years now and it’s still my favorite. Simple, user friendly, easy to work on and fun! Super reliable as well, 120k miles in 2 years no issues lol
@@blueazure9658 are you comparing a budget car brand to exotic supercars lol
I can't be the only one who wonders if the 3rd row button to move the seat in front works if someone is sitting on it. I feel this is definitely something siblings would try. 😂
Yes it does and yes it's annoying lmao
same
@@dbman992will it break your legs?
Yes it does, I hate it
It does but only when the vehicle is stopped. It's truly great when you have a brother.
Historically, the “it just works” ethos of the Pilot also carries well into the ownership experience. Hondas 3.5L V6 is practically bullet proof. These cars extremely reliable and as a result have excellent resale value. There’s a reason you see so many older models still on the road.
I still see 1st and 2nd gen pilots regularly on the road, and 3rd gens are ALL over the place. Im sure this new pilot will sell just as well as the rest
We will see - the engine is pretty revamped. This is not the same 3.5
@georgesnyder5337 it's still a J35 its pretty much the same.
I like the dedicated camera button on the wiper stalk. I have one on the dash in my 2017 RAV4 and use it often for this exact reason.
Transmission not so bulletproof
I love these types of reviews. I know they aren’t the most exciting/viewed videos, but they are so helpful when looking to buy a car. Other reviewers are often so sterile when it comes to taking about features.
I get that but what came to mind was how he kept referring to the third row features, as someone who basically has lived in that row. None of those amenities ever work properly. You really think those vents running through the roof of a hot ass car are still going to be cold?
His reviews arent real user reviews just general reviews that go over everything you can “see”
@@SesshomaruSama15 “still going to be cold?” YES IT WILL STILL BE COLD. what kind of third row do you have??? honda third rows have zero problems. especially with sending cold air through a tube in the roof
This car drives like a slug. I recently test drove one. I much prefer the crv hybrid…but I’ve owned 2 crvs so im biased.
These are the most entertaining
I'm just thrilled when one of Doug's reviews doesn't start out with "Big news!"
Feels like it’s been so long since a regular cars have made it on the channel. I wasn’t a Honda design fan until 2022 and 2023. Seems they finally figured out how to make things look good. This and the Palisade video are super entertaining AND super helpful!
Eh, I feel like the new civic looks like what the accord could’ve been. Prefer the look of the old civic
@@davidg9401 To me the last gen civic is hard to place. I *was* the target demographic for that car. I graduated high school in 2015; and that generation Civic came out in 2015 as a 2016 model. And yet, I just didn’t love how it looked and I think it by the end of its run, 7 years later, it only got uglier and less appealing as I matured. I like this generation Civic a lot. Just the regular car, even, is nice enough to truly be the car for everyone. The last one just wasn’t. The interior cheapness never was remedied. Honda’s infotainment system was atrocious. The NVH even in the non sporty trims was still too prominent. There was no premium sound system even offered. It was a penalty box. You got in it, and just felt “You don’t like it? Too bad- you shouldn’t have been broke.”
New civic looks great and the new accord looks even better. The new HR-V too. I'm not even a Honda fan.
@theunexplained1925 I still haven't warmed up to the new Accord, but the rest of the lineup is looking solid now, especially the big volume sellers- CR-V and HR-V. The HR-V (at least on the outside) looks way better than what it costs.
@@d33b33Love it or hate it, normal cars are what 95% of people drive. “Car guys” make up a very small portion of people, and they never make companies any profit.
I'm happy to see a return to this car's roots. My family had an old 2nd gen Pilot when I grew up. It took us wherever we needed to go, it hauled hundreds of pounds of wood and tile without complaints, and it could pull heavy trailers for hours on end. It was rear-ended four separate times (one of which totalled the other car) and it barely even needed repairs. It's still running with over 200,000 miles and 13 years of age. I have so many fond memories of that old car, and I'm glad Honda stopped trying to turn it into a pseudo-crossover minivan wannabe.
I feel you on the 2nd gen, I drove my uncles for a bit for his business, he had a '15 EX-L and it was pretty comfortable all things considered. Drove it until 157k and then traded it in for a '22 EX-L. I still miss that 2nd gen, I called it the Toaster Mobile because of the boxy shape and also the small slits on the roof. The center console and storage overall on those 2nd gens were my favorite, not so favorite was the process in changing the headlight bulbs.
@@DefineLife The toastermobile is a fantastic name. It was definitely boxy, but I feel like that's part of the charm.
I’m sorry about the car.
One thing he forgot to mention with the trailsport upgrades is the new rear differential. This SUV is actually decently capable off-road due to that major upgrade
Yet you’ve never seen one of them drive anywhere off road. Except maybe when running over a puddle at Costco. Comment on off roading when you know what you’re talking about.
Edit: I triggered the NPC crowd haha
@@miniaddict4534And how exactly do you know he doesn’t? He actually contributed some [albeit unverified] knowledge of technical equipment, which is still more than can be said for your ignorant accusation.
@@miniaddict4534of course not, car just came out tard
@@miniaddict4534, Mine ran over a curb at Starbucks once.
@@johny1ihe hides in the bushes at all the off-road areas to spot pilots, you didn't know that? he's all seeing all knowing.
The plastic trim you pointed out, while intended to look like metal, isn't a skid plate. The actual skid plates would be underneath the vehicle and may actually be stainless steel.
Yeah I found that hilarious, that’s literally just the underside of the front bumper, so yes it is plastic. Just a little further back, you can see the skid plate. You’d think he’d know better.
Dougs been doing this for so long. How come he couldn't figure that out lol
@@0R3NJ1 as much as he knows, he only knows what he knows.... not exactly an off roader kind of guy
Yeah, I only think of skid plates as under the truck, protecting oil pan etc.
It has the critical skid plates that protect things like the fuel tank and transmission/transfer case.
The steel skid plates are more under the car protecting the drivetrain components... you were just pushing on a plastic garnish.
It's funny when Doug does that.. . . . . with all his car knowledge
Also pretty glaring that he didn’t mention the engine being all new. You can’t know scouting about every car but that’s a biggy to miss
Although this is still a 3.5 V6, it’s a new engine. It’s now DOHC and was built to comply with new emissions standards going forward. Between the engine, the new transmission, and basically SH-AWD, it’s actually quite new underneath.
And my 2002 Pilot has almost the same power and MPG. Advancement in 20 years is so good 😂
@@markwalters2287Pilot came out in late 2003 with a 240HP V6 with 4WD. 17/22 mpg but with age they get 15 in the city now. I still own my 06 Pilot and it’s a champ.
@@markwalters2287It grew in size and weight, plus it's now boxy. I bet this segment of huge SUVs won't see any generational improvements without engine (or body) downsizing
@markwalters2287 yeah but the transmissions in those sucked compared to now.
The main thing I'm glad they did is put the new 10 speed. The ZF9 in the old model was ok but can be a little rough at times. The 10 speed is very smooth and very reliable. And I appreciate they are still using a V6 instead of a 4 cylinder turbo.
Thank you for reviewing no only fancy cars but some that we can actually buy. Love your videos, and super excited with your success!!
Hey Doug. The touring and elite models have second row heated seats 😊
Apparently, so does the Canadian market TrailSport
I would hope so, considering that said feature was available at least as early as 2014 on the MDX.
For the first time in a decade I can look at a Honda lineup without cringing. Good job!
Love this color. Works well with the pilot! Like you're piloting through the blue sky
Nice pun.
Having owned 2015 EXL, this new box shape is something which was missing for quite a long time. Thank you Honda for re-introducing this flavor again.
Doug is the type of guy who sleeps with ruler to see how long he slept
Pretty much spot on though you should try the other trim levels to compare noise. The back seat has more headroom than some other similar SUV's like the Toyota Highlander and Subaru Ascent. Also it's wider than those vehicles and it feels bigger when you drive it. Trailsport version has 1mpg less than the regular versions as well. Drive modes are different on different trim levels with the LX version lacking a few modes. LX is a bit louder due to (apparently,) lack of acoustic dampening glass.
I've owned one for about a month. I take it up in the mountains in Colorado almost every weekend. It does so well! I'm honestly in love with it
So I’ve never driven the new pilot, but I have driven the most recent passport. As a rental of all things. I had the “off-road” version of it and I actually loved it. Honda SUV’s are some of my favorites coke recently and this is from someone who test drive new cars for Audi and Mercedes. It’s definitely not a raptor or trd Tacoma but it actually did phenomenal for basic overlanding and off-roading on dirt and sand dunes. I was passing trucks and SUV’s that had gotten stuck in a HONDA. I also would like to admit that with the black on black this car was rocking, I had a LOT of girls coming up to me. Mostly moms but still. Definitely one of my favorite SUV’s to date and I think you hit the nail on the head with everything but the fun factor Doug. It is a bit more fun than you’d give it credit for if you took it camping. Definitely not fast though. Fantastic video!
It looks like a throwback to the 09-15 Pilot. Boxy design and bigger.
That generation was a great design.
@@nate_23 I actually have a 2015 Pilot myself.
I like these reviews of regular, affordable vehicles!
We love our new 2023 Pilot Trailsport...I don't find it too noisy and the ride is just fine. Actually pretty fun to ride on our central Texas roads which are often very bumpy.
I have the black LX version because nobody within 70 miles had the sport yet. It's fantastic. very smooth. Got the 80% ceramic tint on all windows and 15% on front two. Looks great. plasti-dipped awd and H logo on back. for an LX, it has quite a bit standard.
Got to sit in one of these at an auto show. Very impressed with the improvements.
Doug, you should of done more research on the engine because it’s a different 3.5 engine from the last model and its still a timing belt, quad cam with no more valve adjust.
Bought a 2023 Pilot Elite. Took it on a 2500-mile two-week road trip. We love everything (except one small thing) about it. Can’t say enough about the comfort, storage (both front cabin and rear area), and driving experience on 80 MPH interstates. All great. The one drawback is the passenger seat. We knew this when we bought it, but went ahead anyway. The passenger seat does not raise up. My wife is short. We had to buy a 2-inch seat cushion so she could see better. Honda, please put that adjustment in future models (at least in the top-end Elite).
I love Hondas new interior design. Perfect ratio of screen and buttons, everything that should be a physical button is one and a decent screen size rather a whole monitor in the dash.
Looking forward to your Grand Highlander, Lexus TX, and ID Buzz longwheelbase videos!
And the all new Toyota Land Cruiser/ Lexus GX
We need more oversized water bottle compatibility in new cars. Right now my civic has the perfect spot for it and god am I going to miss it when I get my new car
Don't get a new car then
That's some impressive merging onto the highway while barely looking at traffic and looking at the your camera while memorizing your script!
You can see the progression of Honda simply making this look less like a Van/SUV to solely and SUV. They did a good job.
I think the next revision will be the one to go for.
I did see one of these today on the highway and quickly noticed it and applauded Honda (albeit in my head) for finally making this look good to almost anyone and not just a Mom who needs 3 rows.
The new Honda Pilot looks so good. I like they went for a more boxy style. As a matter of fact I love that these vehicle manufacturers are going back to more boxy designs. I always dreamed of vehicles looking more boxy but having modern technology, though I do prefer older technology because it's more simpler.
I also liked boxy SUVs, but the ones on the market currently are from brands with a bad reputation for reliability; Chevy, Kia, Ford despite looking good. Really excited to see the new Landcruiser, and hopefully be able to afford this one once it's a few years old 😄
@@tevinabeysekera6038 The new Land Cruiser looks legit. I see a bit of 70-series in the design. Blockiness is good. With the downsizing of the Land Cruiser, there are wild rumors that Toyota is going to give the 4Runner a removable top and turn it into something to take on the Wrangler and Bronco.
How does it affect the fuel economy?
It's like they finally merged the mini van into the midsized SUV. Most of the pluses Doug mentions on the interior at the beginning are things that have been standard on mid-tier mini vans since the mid-2000s.
@@QuintusAntonious I can't wait until people finally get over their hangups enough that we can get sliding doors on SUVs/crossovers. Those were so incredibly convenient.
Brilliant climate control design! Honda seems to have improved what already was a good, proven and reliable SUV. Smart move.
Doug, take a weekend some time with some people you know in the off-roading community. There are great locations to explore within a 4hr drive from SoCal. This is an enthusiast community with every bit as much enthusiasm as exists in the exotic/sport car world. I think you'll really enjoy it. And then maybe on your next review you won't push your fingers against the front bumper and call it a "skid plate".
I bought a EXL TRIM a couple months ago .. loving it so far great family car .
Doug can you do a follow up video, covering more rare cars that you wouldn’t ordinarily recognize are rare.
I loved the detail you went into in that video and you really opened my eyes and many others to some seriously cool and quirky rare gems.
You should also do a review for the Grand Highlander as well.
Thanks for keeping the reviews solo
Finally, a review I know something about. We picked up our new Pilot Trailsport about a month ago, right before taking a family vacation. It was about 600 miles each way, with large parts of it through the mountains of WV, VA, and NC, and running in Eco mode (with a heavy foot) we still averaged 22mpg. We took the trip down with our two kids (under 10 YO) and there was plenty of room for them in the second row, charging for iPads, and with the third row folded down there was plenty of storage for everything that we needed to transport for a long beach vacation. It drove like a dream, and rode like a dream. When we got to the beach house we unloaded and pulled up the third row so we could transport two additional kids and one additional adult, no problems. Everyone was comfortable and happy. Did we need to take it onto the sand at the beach? Nope. Did we anyway just because we could? Yup. Sand mode worked just fine. It's been almost 20 years since I've owned a Honda, and they still continue to impress. If only they made a sporty sedan for me...
My only criticism is the braking. It did seem like it was a bit slower to slow down or come to a stop than expected, even taking into account the vehicle size. It caught me offguard a couple of times, and nearly killed us when my wife tried to take a 90 degree turn in the wet far too fast. Fortunately the oncoming traffic was able to avoid us and we escaped without a scratch, but the braking was the one thing that needed the most "getting used to".
Doug also didn't mention that it has a system for monitoring driver attention. Several times while my wife was driving it beeped and flashed a warning about "low driver attention level". She accused the car of being "judgy", but she did try to take that corner too fast because she wasn't paying attention, so...yeah. And of course it comes with the usual complement of auto start/stop, lane departure, etc, a bundle that they call "Honda Sensing" that is now standard on all their cars (or so I am told).
Wow, this looks so much better than past years' designs.
It looks like the Izuzu Rodeo
has a good enough look to be turned into a pickup truck but maybe im dreaming too much
@@andrewk8636 - Honda already has the Ridgeline. They might be dreaming if they think they can duplicate the Ford Maverick success
@@randolfo1265 Ridgeline isn't a truck and neither is the maverick. Those are small suvs with beds
I disagree. Each new version looks worse to me.
Im surprised you didnt mention about how smooth the new non VTEC J35Y8 is along with the 10AT transmission. When you put it in sport mode the steering stiffens up quite a bit and when using the paddles the shifts are significantly faster than the ZF 9HP48 transmission but that as well is a amooth shifting trans
This. He sort of dismissed the transmission as being fairly the same b/c it has one more speed but there’s a huge difference between the old ZF 9 and this buttery smooth 10 speed. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this is the same gearbox that the 2.0T Accord has and that shifts very fast and smooth.
Def. Recommend doing a truck review of the Apocalypse 6×6 if you havent already. Saw one today and i was blown away!
I seen a couple on the road and was like ohh Doug bout to get to this😂
I hope there are people like me who hate that we are stuck with captain seats in mid row unless we buy base trims. At least give an option to choose between captain and bench seats.
With the Pilot you do. The top trims is a bench, with a removable middle seat that fits in the cubby underneath the trunk. So it gives you both 8-7 seating depending on what you as the owner want that day lol
He didn’t mention it, but the reason why the Trailsport is the only trim with 7 seating only is because that same underneath cubby in the trunk is smaller because the Trailsport actually has a full-size spare. The rest of the pilots have a donut-sized spare leaving more room for the cubby. Therefore the middle seat wouldn’t fit, hence why they just made it captain’s chairs.
I agree with you about the captains chairs on higher trim levels. It was one of the reasons I went with the new Pilot (got the Elite) over some of the competitors. I definitely need to get 5 adults in the vehicle at various times and I'd rather put three across the middle row than have one of them climb in the third row. The EX-L trim can be had as 7 or 8 seat. The Touring and Elite are 8 seat but with a removeable middle seat (to make it a 7 seater) in the second row that stows under the cargo area. The TrailSport is 7 seat only.
I really like this new Pilot especially the Trailsport! I personally like the half digital/ analog gauge cluster because it looks much cooler than that BMW looking digital gauge cluster thats gonna break at any moment, and I don't need more features than that. I also have no idea why you would compare this to an X5 and the GLE though. Like... Those are complete different cars. You gonna have to take a break from reviewing several luxury cars and review some normal cars Doug.
As someone who works at Honda building these, i would like to point out a couple of things.
1. The wheels and blue paint are exclusive to the trailsport. Also, i cant believe Doug didnt mention that the trailsport name is stamped into the rims.
2. The trailsport didnt start with this new model, it started with the previous generation.
Lastly, and i cant believe i never noticed it before but Doug mentioned a camera button at the end of the wiper stalk and i didnt know that was there😅. Best believe the next time i go to work, i will be looking for that.
What's your opinion, are these built to last or over priced?
@@ceciliaabdalla4954 yes i think they are built to last, but as for the price, i think they are priced fairly compared to other offerings in the segment.
@@kdawg8292 thank you

What a remarkably practical interior! Quite a lot of functions have been moved back to being buttons and knobs again, which is great. Hopefully it's a trend that continues!
But its so boring and honestly ugly... Interior looks almost the same as a accord I had 10 years ago...
@@tigerjonn Better than yet another case of Tesla Syndrome, at least...
@PhysicsGamer have you seen the interior of the Kia Telluride? It's leaps and bounds better than the Pilot interior. And functional too...
@@tigerjonn Haven't seen it before, but just looked up some pictures. It looks... alright, I guess. Not the best I've seen, though it does have a number of very strong points. The fact that they couldn't even be bothered to make the infotainment system a separate piece from the gauge cluster definitely loses it a lot of points, though. Makes it look like the dashboard is huddling around the driver as if afraid of the road. And really smacks of Tesla Syndrome.
Not the worst I've seen lately, not by a long shot. But it really does feel like Tesla's well-deserved disruption of the car market also somehow made everyone forget how to make car interiors overnight.
@@PhysicsGamer Its supposed to be huddled around the driver so its easy to access for the driver... Have you seen the interiors of Audis or Mercedes or BMWs or Genesis? This is how the new interior designs should be done.
Do I want the same looking interior as the Honda I had in High School.. Color scheme is exactly the same...
The interior of a Telluride looks a class or 2 above the Pilot. The Telluride interior looks like it should be in the luxury level class of cars... Pilot doesn't.
Look at the Interior of the 2024 Sante Fe... Which is one of the best interiors ive seen in a non luxury vehicle...That is the future of non luxury cars... Interior is luxury level for the price of regular cars...
Pilot hasn't got that memo and is still going for mediocrity when it comes to interiors. Honestly exteriors too, honda has been not inspiring imo. Most designs has BARELY changed in the last 20 years!
I had a Pilot from like 16 years ago... looks similar to this one.
I've seen off roading reviews of this trim for the Pilot. It is surprsingly capable!!
Hi Doug, great review as always. A few comments from a 2019 Elite owner. Some of the features you seem to think are new I enjoy on my 19´ - cabin talk I have. I also have the senseless eco button and also 4 drive modes. I also have a flip-down screen for the kids to view DVD, but it rarely gets used. Pull-up sun shades are great and also on my 19´. My two girls do love the rear captains seats. Also the button for getting into the third row we enjoy as well. Apple CarPlay is great as well as voice commands with the button on the steering wheel. I can dictate texts with Siri with iMessage or WhatsApp, super convenient. All sorts of room as you note, great family car. I must say I was disillusioned a little when shopping this car though. I live in Costa Rica and the roads are not very good. Lots of bumps and potholes. I felt buying the pilot would get me an overall more robust undercarriage and running gear- it’s really not. I don’t think it’s any beefier than your standard sedan after really looking underneath it. I have about 40K on the car and am facing $2k in front end work. Also a slow leak in the transfer case and now the transmission is acting up, not looking forward to that repair. Honda only does 3yr - 36k mile warranty here witch sucks but it is what it is. Having said all that, I still love my Pilot! Oh, one other thing, the entire car industry including Honda have done a great job pushing all wheel drive. I get it if you’re driving in snow but pretty much overkill if you’re not. Heavier car, more complicated, uses more gas and eats up front tires, although it does handle better. My wife and I both have four wheel drive trucks so I would not buy another all-wheel drive for the family car, just don’t need it in 99% of driving scenarios. Hope my comments help others!
Barely even read any of it before I realized you were just going to go on and on about how precious your Pilot is. 😂
How does AWD in the pilot eat up front tires? All 2WD Pilots are FWD, and the AWD is FWD only until it predicts slippage. If anything, an AWD pilot should wear front tires less especially since the front tires would slip a lot less in a low traction situation.
This is the only other midsize SUV I'd consider beyond the telluride/palisade.
Why not the new Land Cruiser?
I wonder if there is more sound deadening in the Elite. I would think so. I really wish someone would review the Elite model. All I see online is the Trailsport.
I believe the Elite has acoustic glass in the front windows so it is a bit quieter
I'm REALLY loving the redesign
I've owned a honda pilot since 2017, 50k miles on it and have only needed oil changes and minor updates like windshield wipers and air filters. Runs so well, fun to drive, and plenty of amenities. Would love a newer version with more advanced cruise control but I'm still so happy with mine ❤
Honda is my favorite car brand. And of course, I'm really excited to see what they are going to do for the next months
I love Honda too the AC systems are junk though lol
Yep Honda is easily my favorite brand. I especially want a Legend coupe 6spd, S2000 NSX, manual element or civic hybrid or insight. My brother has a prelude and I drive a CL type S 6spd
Honda is alright, i guess. Toyota is better, in my opinion.
My favorite car brand is Mercury.
@@Tool0GT92what is junk about their AC systems? They don't stay cold or something?
I really like the new pilot. This and the new pathfinder rock creek look really cool!
I have a 2G 2014 Pilot EXL 4WD and i like how this new gen kinda goes back to mine in terms of boxy/cube styling, not to mention the comical practicality on the inside in terms of cupholder/trunk space. the engine is also finally moving away from the VTEC SOHC that honda guys seem to love, but this new DOHC motor seems to be doing the job just well too. additionally, to critique on doug's driving impressions: true, the pilot isn't really fun to drive... but in the my 2G at least, it's oddly fun to shift from 1 to 2 and into D banging off the near-7000rpm redline in true Honda fashion but maybe thats just be lol
Still driving my first gen pilot. 15 years old now... Would be really nice to upgrade to this.
Good to fit in some regular cars in your reviews. Chevy Trax, maybe?
Ooh no not the trax! It seems that their engine is pretty unreliable!
@@michellemire8462 I think he meant the all new Trax EV. Still not a great car.
@@jonlosito2004 i didnt knew that exsisted! Ty!
This Pilot is also a lot more rigid and more safe than the previous version. As a result of this and the new awd system and new engine it's also surprisingly nimble to drive.
I found the same. The new AWD in particular makes it very fun to drive, even on bright sunny days.
I was chilled to the bone at 11:57 and the manical laugh... still can't sleep. LOL
Nice, looking forward to a Grand Highlander review at some point to compare all these 3 row midsize SUVs!
Looks like the latest generation Pilot took a lot of 3rd row ergonomic cues from the Kia Telluride, good for them 👍🏼
No one copies Kia
My aunt recently bought the new pilot and the brakes kept randomly going off when a shadow passed in front of the sensors. It even went off on the *highway* once
No way! So sorry for your aunt
My Insight did that stuff! Scared the f**k outta me!
She should be able to adjust how sensitive that system is. My wife's Passport can.
I'm actually surprised that this still happens. It was pretty common 6-8 years ago when these sensors were becoming ubiquitous, but most manufacturers have managed to work out the false positive kinks.
Huh. I have a Honda Fit with a camera that will tell you break and beep at ya. It has kinda saved me before. But it does beep randomly. I think going under shadows might do it.
I drove the pilot, passport and ridgeline, these Suvs are super dope!
My family has owned 2 generations of the pilots and they may not be the nicest but it gets the job done reliably and pretty comfortably.
I’m surprised the home-style electric outlet didn’t come much sooner, such a common sense idea.
EDIT: I meant cars as a whole, not just the Pilot. Cars haven’t had the actual cigarette lighter for a long time now, so I’m not sure why the cigarette lighter style outlet continued past that. Should’ve made the switch then.
Pontiac Vibe and Toyota Matrix from 2003 had a home style outlet....to my knowledge, as did Avalon XLS from 2001.
@@carbzav8017 I meant as being more mainstream. I know there were a small handful of cars that had it but it was never as common as it is today.
@@TonyWoody Honda E has it too
My wife's 2011 Pilot has one, its just inside the center console instead of behind it.
Doesn't the F150 usually have one somewhere in the cabin?
As one of Doug’s visually impaired viewers, it always impresses me how many ‘thises’ Cars and Bids manages to sell
I'll help you out, they were all Yugos
Nice review - you missed a couple quirks that I noticed.
2:19 - The new Pilot actually has a new J35Y8 DOHC V6, supposedly due to emissions. All previous J35 variants were SOHC, with intake-only VTEC, which this engine does away with.
4:18 - Pilot Second Row options vary by trim level. LX, Sport, and EX-L are standard with a 2nd row bench seat. EX-L offers Captains Chairs. Trailsport is Captains Chairs only. Elite and Touring have a removable 2nd row middle seat, that can be stowed behind the 3rd row, under the floor. This storage area means the Elite and Touring force a donut spare. The Trailsport does not offer this, likely so they could offer a full size spare instead.
6:15 - The Elite trim does indeed offer heated outboard 2nd row seats.
8:30 - The Pilot is advertised as having Engine and Fuel Tank skid plates, which is why the bumper is still plastic.
8:45 - You don't mention that the Trailsport comes with a full size spare, which is very nice offroad.
8:58 - All pilot trims have hill descent control. It also seems to be available on the HR-V, which is not at all offroad focused.
16:39 - This area is where the 2nd row seats go in the Elite and Touring.
17:37 - Objectively, it is not fun. However, compared to its competitors, I have heard the Pilot steers better and drives better than say, a Highlander or Telluride. It's only going to be so good while having room for 8 people and their stuff
19:42 - Interesting comparison. The Pilot starts at 37k, and has a usable 3 seat 3rd row with space behind the third row. The X5 starts at 65k, and has a smaller 2 seat 3rd row with less space behind it. A Honda isn't going to be competing with that. The Acura MDX is a much more fair X5 rival. However, you are still correct that Honda skips out on luxury sound deadening and suspension tuning. The ride could also have to with the suspension needed for a near 1500 pound payload capacity.
21:48 - The BOF 4runner is indeed a better offroader than the unibody pilot. However, the 4runner's 16 city / 19 highway MPG is a lot different than the 18/23 of the Trailsport (19/25 for other Pilot trims)
Otherwise, great review. I understand that after you receive the car, you only have a limited time to peruse the owner's manual and poke around and read spec sheets before you have to get a video filmed, so obviously you miss things.
Edit: You also didn't mention or show off the giant panoramic sunroof
I practically grew up in the first generation Honda Pilot. Glad to see they've kept the line moving forward logically, with the possible exception of last generation's styling.
Cars people drive the bloody piss out of flooring it at all times because of some sort of chip on their shoulder, the first one goes without saying:
Nissan Altima
Honda CRV
Base model Honda Civic
Toyota Rav 4 any version
Subaru Forester non-XT
Base Model Ford Focus
Electric cars that arent Tesla's
Hyundai Santa Fe
Feel feel free to chime in with geographically appropriate examples also. I find this topic interesting.
genesis coupe and brz too
@eugene44569 those are good ones.too har to think of them all. Mustang GT's tend to be guilty as well as the non-Hellcat and non- Scatpack versions of the Charger and Challenger.
I am one of those people who thinks small cars and SUVs are best and just what 90% of people need :) But my dad had a 99 Izusu Trooper I think, and it was wonderful and for that reason I really like this Pilot ❤️ (Originally the Pilot and the Trooper were the same car)
Actually, it was the first Honda Passport and Isuzu Rodeo that were the same car. The Trooper was the same as the first ever Acura SUV...the SLX
I just got a Honda Fit and my family owns large body on frame suvs. Honestly I like them both. The Fit is easy to drive but driving a big car has its own satisfaction that a small car could never match.
The fact that it isn’t a small turbo but a 3.5L V6 is why I will eventually buy one.
I drive a 2018 elite and sat in a new elite and i can say they definitely improved it although the last generation is still a good vehicle.
Ideal cargo space for Doug to buy those cookies in bulk from now on
Doug is the type of guy to trade in his Carrara Gt for a pilot
One of the best vehicles ever owned was a 2012 Pilot touring. The dvd surround sound system sold us
It’s cool how practical it is
New cars need to be cheaper, less tech and just reliable. I will rather buy a 20,000 dollare car for my family than something woth a cool design and led everything and a stupid tablet attached to the dash board.
Doug's the type of guy to make you notice that he's wearing pants instead of shorts... And it feels strange...
Wow I kind of love this car. If I had a wife and kids I'd 100% want this to be my daily! Nice mixture of practicality, styling, and fun features.
for me the current honda infotainment with the dial is one of the best out there.
Doug the kind of guy who drinks Bud Lite and says stunning and brave with every sip.
You must have a list of these in the tuck 💀💀
Y'all are so fucking weird
Living rent free in your head huh?
@@checkoutmyyoutubepagePretty sure Doug's the craft beer type. Wouldn't you agree?
😂
I test drove the TrailSport and it was a nice SUV. I felt huge inside and the headroom was incredible. But it didnt change my mind on getting a 4Runner. The Pilot has a lot going for it, but it isn't a truck.
Honda and Toyota knows not to fix something that’s not broken. If it works, then it works. That’s why I love both brands
In regards to the Captains Chairs. The Touring and Elite have a removable middle seat in the middle row. This will give you that captain chairs however it does not have the folding down armrests.
I have a gen1 and its kind of a sleeper. They aren't slow. They are heavy. But they have a lot of power hidden is a pseudo-minivan body. The "TOW" and "SNOW" make sense as drive modes.
We had many pilots and the button to exit and enter the 3rd row has to be the best part. Worst part would be the climate placement- not on the roof.
Amount of cup holders, heated rear seats, rear screen with first detachable remote then fully separate remote are all super nice features. Seats were not the most comfortable.
I was waiting for this one ! I have an 06 385k !
I was hoping Doug would review something with the speak to back passengers mode, lo and behold it happened mere minutes after that thought.
Maybe seems not fun, but ivtm4 (in Pilots and Ridglines) and shawd (in Acuras) are the only AWD true vectoring systems actively overdriving faster rear wheels diagonally in turns using additional accelerating unit which is programmed more aggressively for Acuras and had been reviewed as "lots of fun" ... This Pilot version of ivtm4 supposedly have stronger clutches helping with previous overheating issues in off road use
Have this. The only thing I didn't like was that it doesn't have the bose system, cooling seats, and the full digital dash. Everything else was super.
12:44 I found the space to put a second wireless charger. Passengers (often the spouse) have phones too.
Doug I know that this may be the wrong time and video to comment about this subject but, the new land cruiser prado is the LC that will be coming to the US market and will be unveiled today at 9:20 pm ET. I also know that you won't see thissss and you probably already know, but please review the LC Prado and or the lexus gx in the coming months or years as they are also both Land Cruisers in the frame and chasis.
