  • Here is another "Then and Now" presentation taken from the photo archives of the Spokesman-Review. Spokane, especially the downtown area, has a long and storied history of boom and bust, notable characters and as a hub of life in the Inland Northwest. Here are some photos ranging from 1889 through 1970, each updated with a modern digital camera image.

I have very good memories of Spokane, i lived there from 1974 to 1980, went to visit my aunt and uncle in 74 and see the world's fair, and my mother decided that we should live here, many trips to the falls, many rides on the falls gondola, went to school at Grant elementary, went to junior high at Libby and Shaw, went to high school at Shadle Park, these memories i will cherish for the rest of my days

With how much has changed in the last 3 years, we definitely need an update once the construction finishes this summer. Make a video comparing 1920 with 2020

At the 1:21 mark you show Densow's Drug in 1953, however there is a 1955 Chevy convertible and on the other side of it is a 1957 Ford F-100 pickup. Also going up Riverside is either a 1955 or '56 Ford, so this is a couple of years later. Also sure were a lot of people downtown in those days, made Spokane look like a city. Today, not so much.

Yep, our sidewalks got strangled by cars and zoning. Used to be you could walk outside your apartment and be right downtown, now with residential zones you have nothing but a parking lot and a 45mph arterial outside the apartment. Some of Spokane is walkable, but a lot of it is car-only islands

      @@thefrub Better than Seattle!

@@larryhinze8658 Not even close, Seattle has functional public transportation, it's easier to get around without a car downtown than with one. If you gotta wrap yourself in 2 tons of metal to go pick up tacos, you might live in what's known as a Car Slum
